10*Release date: XX-XXX-2008*
11
12Core and Builtins
13-----------------
14
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +000015- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with
16 a unicode argument.
17
Benjamin Peterson17f03ca2008-09-01 14:18:30 +000018- Issue #3683: Fix compilation when --without-threads is given.
19
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +000020- Issue #3668: Fix a memory leak with the "s*" argument parser in
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +000021 PyArg_ParseTuple and friends, which occurred when the argument for "s*"
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +000022 was correctly parsed but parsing of subsequent arguments failed.
23
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +000024- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +000025 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
26 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
27 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
28 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
29 type object.
30
Neal Norwitz18aa3882008-08-24 05:04:52 +000031- Fix crashes on memory allocation failure found with failmalloc.
32
33- Fix memory leaks found with valgrind and update suppressions file.
34
35- Fix compiler warnings in opt mode which would lead to invalid memory reads.
36
37- Fix problem using wrong name in decimal module reported by pychecker.
38
Christian Heimesfb1813c2008-08-22 19:34:15 +000039- Issue #3642: Changed type of numarenas from uint to size_t
40 in order to silence a compilier warning on 64bit OSes.
41
Christian Heimes7d4c3172008-08-22 19:47:25 +000042- Silenced another compiler warning about a used but not defined
43 function 'stringlib_contains_obj'.
44
Benjamin Peterson712ee922008-08-24 18:10:20 +000045- Added warnings on the use of ``__getslice__``, ``__setslice__``, or
46 ``__delslice__``.
47
Gregory P. Smith2bb25cc2008-09-02 05:29:51 +000048- Issue #3678: Correctly pass LDFLAGS and LDLAST to the linker on shared
49 library targets in the Makefile.
50
Benjamin Peterson14cb6bc2008-08-26 17:08:40 +000051C-API
52-----
53
54- Aliased PyObject_Bytes to PyObject_Str.
55
Barry Warsaw6a0b5592008-08-21 02:12:56 +000056Library
57-------
58

60
Facundo Batistac585df92008-09-03 22:35:50 +000061- Issue 600362: Relocated parse_qs() and parse_qsl(), from the cgi module
62 to the urlparse one. Added a PendingDeprecationWarning in the old
63 module, it will be deprecated in the future.
64

66 non-ascii characters and Unicode in setup.py meta-data.
67
68- Issue #3726: Allow spaces in separators in logging configuration files.
Vinay Sajip6a2fd812008-09-03 09:20:05 +000069
Marc-André Lemburg31a0a142008-09-02 12:11:19 +000070- Issue #3719: platform.architecture() fails if there are spaces in the
71 path to the Python binary.
72
Brett Cannon1eaf0742008-09-02 01:25:16 +000073- Issue 3602: Moved test.test_support.catch_warning() to
74 warnings.catch_warnings() along with some API cleanup. Expanding the tests
75 for catch_warnings() also led to an improvement in the raising of a

Benjamin Petersonf22c26e2008-09-01 14:13:43 +000088
Gregory P. Smithd7122032008-09-02 05:36:11 +000089- Issue #3708: os.urandom no longer goes into an infinite loop when passed a
90 non-integer floating point number.

113
Barry Warsaw07a4a382008-08-21 01:15:08 +0000114*Release date: 20-Aug-2008*
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000115
116Core and Builtins
117-----------------
118
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000119- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
120 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
121 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
122 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
123 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
124 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
125 default.
126
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000127- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
128 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
129
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000130- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
131 value again.
132
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000133- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
134 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
135 and introducing s*.
136
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000137- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
138 object was stored in the freelist.
139
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000140- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
141 ValueError consistently across platforms.
142
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000143- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
144 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
145 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
146
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000147- Apply security patches from Apple.
148
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000149- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
150 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
151
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000152- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
153 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
154
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000155- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
156 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
157 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
158
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000159- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
160 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
161 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
162 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
163 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
164 failed have been fixed.
165
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000166Library
167-------
168
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +0000169- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
170
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000171- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
172 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
173
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000174- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
175 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
176 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
177
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000178- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
179 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
180 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
181 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
182 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
183 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
184
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000185- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
186 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
187
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +0000188- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
189
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +0000190- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.
191
Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +0000192- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.
193
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +0000194- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
195 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
196
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +0000197- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
198 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
199
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +0000200- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
201 in a redirect.
202
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000203- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in
Brett Cannon721b1452008-08-16 22:00:27 +0000204 BaseHTTPServer, cgi (and rfc822), httplib.
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000205
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +0000206- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash
207 after a 302 response in the case of not going through a proxy.
208
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +0000209- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
210 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
211 regular expression.
212
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +0000213- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now
214 thread-safe.
215
Brett Cannonbf3157b2008-08-14 05:00:03 +0000216- Silence the DeprecationWarning of rfc822 when it is imported by mimetools
217 since mimetools itself is deprecated. Because modules are cached, all
218 subsequent imports of rfc822 will not raise a visible DeprecationWarning.
219
Antoine Pitrou9fcd4b32008-08-11 17:21:36 +0000220- Issue #3134: shutil referenced undefined WindowsError symbol.
221
Robert Schuppenies14646332008-08-10 11:01:53 +0000222- Issue #1342811: Fix leak in Tkinter.Menu.delete. Commands associated to
223 menu entries were not deleted.
224
Brett Cannon83e81842008-08-09 23:30:55 +0000225- Copied the implementation of reduce() to _functools.reduce() to have a
226 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
227
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +0000228- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise
229 a MemoryError rather than silently stop the iteration.
230
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +0000231- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"
232 to _sre.compile() will now be rejected. This should not affect anybody
233 since the re.compile() function never generates invalid re-bytecode.
234
Skip Montanaroa032bf42008-08-08 22:52:51 +0000235- Issue #3436: Make csv.DictReader's fieldnames attribute a property so that
236 upon first access it can be automatically initialized from the csv file if
237 it wasn't initialized during instantiation.
238
Brett Cannon3aa2a492008-08-06 22:28:09 +0000239- Issue #2338: Create imp.reload() to help with transitioning to Python 3.0 as
240 the reload() built-in has been removed.
241
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +0000242- Changed code in the following modules/packages to remove warnings raised
Brett Cannonc1b76e42008-08-09 23:06:16 +0000243 while running under the ``-3`` flag: aifc, asynchat, asyncore, bdb, bsddb,
Brett Cannon047e4a92008-08-17 04:16:04 +0000244 ConfigParser, cookielib, csv, difflib, distutils, DocXMLRPCServer, email,

248 threading, tokenize, traceback, urlparse, wsgiref, xml, xmlrpclib.
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +0000249
Lars Gustäbel727bd0b2008-08-02 11:26:39 +0000250- Issue #3039: Fix tarfile.TarFileCompat.writestr() which always
251 raised an AttributeError.
252

Antoine Pitroude781a42008-08-09 12:43:23 +0000254 asking for a specific length. This problem only affected files opened
255 using the new "io" module, not the built-in open() function.
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +0000256

279
Antoine Pitrou5fdfa3e2008-07-25 19:42:26 +0000280- Issue #3394: zipfile.writestr sets external attributes when passed a

312
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000313- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
314 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
315 an integer using operator.index().

322
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000323- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
324 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
325 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
326
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000327- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
328 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
329 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
330 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
331 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
332 level.
333
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000334- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
335 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
336 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
337 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
338 all imports from that module to fail.
339
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000340- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly

350 another thread's dictionary.
351
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000352- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
353 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
354 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
355 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
356 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
357 10, -1).

400 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000401 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000873- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
874 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
875 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
876 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
877 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
878 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
879 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000943- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
944 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
945 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
946 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
947 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
948 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
949 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
950 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
951 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
952 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
953 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
954 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
955 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
956 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
957 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
958 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
959 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
960 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
961 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
962 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
963
964 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
965 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
966 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
967 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
968 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
969 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
970 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
971 access to the underlying socket used.
972
973 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
974 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
975 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000976
977 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000978 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000979 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
980 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
981
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000982 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
983 suite to run in parallel without issue.

Christian Heimes5224d282008-02-23 15:01:05 +00001258
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001259- Issue #1881: An internal parser limit has been increased. Also see
Facundo Batistafc2d0102008-02-23 12:01:13 +00001260 issue 215555 for a discussion.
1261
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001262- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1263 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1264 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1265 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1266 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1267 module is:
1268 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1269
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001270- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1271 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1272 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1273 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1274 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1275 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1276
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001277- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1278 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1279 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1280 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1281 PyObject_Format().
1282
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001283- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1284 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1285 state.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +00001286
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001287- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also

1296 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001297
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001298- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a
1299 subclass of collections.defaultdict, if its default_factory is set
1300 to a bound method.

1314 returns pi_t.
Christian Heimes951cc0f2008-01-31 23:08:23 +00001315

1330 produced the generator.
Georg Brandl0cdf9a32008-01-26 14:14:20 +00001331
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001332- Issue #1920: "while 0" statements were completely removed by the
1333 compiler, even in the presence of an "else" clause, which is
1334 supposed to be run when the condition is false. Now the compiler
1335 correctly emits bytecode for the "else" suite.
