16
Christian Heimes288e89a2008-01-18 18:24:07 +000017- Issue #1865: Bytes as an alias for str and b"" as an alias "" were
18 added.
19
Christian Heimesc94e2b52008-01-14 04:13:37 +000020- sys.float_info / PyFloat_GetInfo: The floating point information
21 object was converted from a dict to a specialized structseq object.
22
Christian Heimesf31b69f2008-01-14 03:42:48 +000023- Patch #1816: Added sys.flags structseq. It exposes the status of most
24 command line arguments and PYTHON* environment variables.
25
26- Object/structseq.c: Implemented new structseq representation. The patch
27 makes structseqs (e.g. the return value of os.stat) more readable.
Christian Heimes9c201962008-01-14 03:33:52 +000028

38 and sys.dont_write_bytecode attribute. All these can be set to forbid Python
39 to attempt to write compiled bytecode files.
40
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce0b76952008-01-04 02:04:15 +000041- Improve some exception messages when Windows fails to load an extension
42 module. Now we get for example '%1 is not a valid Win32 application' instead
43 of 'error code 193'.
44
Christian Heimes8267d1d2008-01-04 00:37:34 +000045- Bug #1481296: Fixed long(float('nan'))!=0L.
46

51 and INF. float("nan"), float("inf") and float("-inf") now work on every
52 platform with IEEE 754 semantics.
53
Raymond Hettingerfd7ed402007-12-18 21:24:09 +000054- Compiler now generates simpler and faster code for dictionary literals.
55 The oparg for BUILD_MAP now indicates an estimated dictionary size.
56 There is a new opcode, STORE_MAP, for adding entries to the dictionary.
57
Christian Heimesdb3d6cb2007-12-16 21:39:43 +000058- Issue #1638: %zd configure test fails on Linux
59
Christian Heimes90e10e72007-12-14 02:35:23 +000060- Issue #1620: New property decorator syntax was modifying the decorator
61 in place instead of creating a new decorator object.
62
Christian Heimes284d9272007-12-10 22:28:56 +000063- Issue #1580: New free format floating point representation based on
64 "Floating-Point Printer Sample Code", by Robert G. Burger. For example
65 repr(11./5) now returns '2.2' instead of '2.2000000000000002'.

74 inside packages with the -m switch via a new module level
75 __package__ attribute.
76
Christian Heimesdfdfaab2007-12-01 11:20:10 +000077- Issue #1534: Added ``PyFloat_GetMax()``, ``PyFloat_GetMin()`` and
78 ``PyFloat_GetInfo()`` to the float API.
79
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcdafd32b2007-11-30 20:51:40 +000080- Issue #1521: On 64bit platforms, using PyArgs_ParseTuple with the t# of w#
81 format code incorrectly truncated the length to an int, even when
82 PY_SSIZE_T_CLEAN is set. The str.decode method used to return incorrect
83 results with huge strings.
84
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbe49a902007-11-30 20:37:22 +000085- Issue #1402: Fix a crash on exit, when another thread is still running, and

96
Nick Coghlan327a39b2007-11-18 11:56:28 +000097- Patch #1739468: Directories and zipfiles containing a __main__.py file can
98 now be directly executed by passing their name to the interpreter. The
99 directory/zipfile is automatically inserted as the first entry in sys.path.
100
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0d75f092007-11-13 21:54:28 +0000101- Issue #1265: Fix a problem with sys.settrace, if the tracing function uses a
102 generator expression when at the same time the executed code is closing a
103 paused generator.
104
Raymond Hettinger1760c8a2007-11-08 02:52:43 +0000105- sets and frozensets now have an isdisjoint() method.

Raymond Hettinger8f669372007-10-03 21:18:11 +0000111- The enumerate() builtin function is no longer bounded to sequences smaller
112 than LONG_MAX. Formerly, it raised an OverflowError. Now, automatically
113 shifts from ints to longs.
114
Brett Cannon0b14f242007-09-30 19:45:10 +0000115- Issue #1686386: Tuple's tp_repr did not take into account the possibility of
116 having a self-referential tuple, which is possible from C code. Nor did
117 object's tp_str consider that a type's tp_str could do something that could
118 lead to an inifinite recursion. Py_ReprEnter() and Py_EnterRecursiveCall(),
119 respectively, fixed the issues.
120
Brett Cannon01531592007-09-17 03:28:34 +0000121- Issue #1164: It was possible to trigger deadlock when using the 'print'
122 statement to write to a file since the GIL was not released as needed. Now
123 PyObject_Print() does the right thing along with various tp_print
124 implementations of the built-in types and those in the collections module.
125
Brett Cannon4c20bc42007-09-11 21:02:28 +0000126- Issue #1147: Exceptions were directly allowing string exceptions in their
127 throw() method even though string exceptions no longer allowed.
128
Brett Cannona0c05512007-09-10 21:38:27 +0000129- Issue #1096: Prevent a segfault from getting the repr of a very deeply nested
130 list by using the recursion counter.
131
Brett Cannon1e534b52007-09-07 04:18:30 +0000132- Issue #1202533: Fix infinite recursion calls triggered by calls to
133 PyObject_Call() never calling back out to Python code to trigger recursion
134 depth updates/checks. Required the creation of a static RuntimeError
135 instance in case normalizing an exception put the recursion check value past
136 its limit. Fixes crashers infinite_rec_(1|2|4|5).py.
137
Martin v. Löwisa5136192007-09-04 14:19:28 +0000138- Patch #1031213: Decode source line in SyntaxErrors back to its original source

162 __*__ attributes. (Some already existed, e.g., __doc__ and __name__.)
163
Neal Norwitz8b2bfbc2007-05-23 06:35:32 +0000164- Add -3 option to the interpreter to warn about features that are
165 deprecated and will be changed/removed in Python 3.0.
166
Georg Brandl2134e752007-05-21 20:34:16 +0000167- Patch #1686487: you can now pass any mapping after '**' in function
168 calls.
169
Collin Winter62903052007-05-18 23:11:24 +0000170- except clauses may now be spelled either "except E, target:" or

Neal Norwitzcbd9ee62007-04-14 05:25:50 +0000180 setting a plain string, ie don't expand to single letter identifiers.
181
Raymond Hettinger13936692007-04-11 18:40:58 +0000182- Request #1191699: Slices can now be pickled.

187
Georg Brandl5cb76c12007-03-21 09:00:39 +0000188- Patch #1682205: a TypeError while unpacking an iterable is no longer
189 masked by a generic one with the message "unpack non-sequence".
190
Neal Norwitzaa754b72007-03-21 06:39:48 +0000191- Remove unused file Python/fmod.c.
192
Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +0000193- Bug #1683368: The object.__init__() and object.__new__() methods are
194 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when
195 either allows excess arguments is when it is not overridden and the
196 other one is. For backwards compatibility, when both are
197 overridden, it is a deprecation warning (for now; maybe a Py3k
Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +0000198 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
199 as supported by type.__new__().
Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +0000200
Georg Brandl2b869942007-03-17 16:08:45 +0000201- Patch #1675423: PyComplex_AsCComplex() now tries to convert an object
202 to complex using its __complex__() method before falling back to the
203 __float__() method. Therefore, the functions in the cmath module now
204 can operate on objects that define a __complex__() method.
205
Žiga Seilnacht6f2d09c2007-03-16 11:59:38 +0000206- Patch #1623563: allow __class__ assignment for classes with __slots__.

216 name.
217
Georg Brandl5240d742007-03-13 20:46:32 +0000218- Patch #1444529: the builtin compile() now accepts keyword arguments.
219

221 case, even when converting the value to a string failed.
222
Georg Brandl871f1bc2007-03-12 13:17:36 +0000223- The dir() function has been extended to call the __dir__() method on
224 its argument, if it exists. If not, it will work like before. This allows
225 customizing the output of dir() in the presence of a __getattr__().
226
Collin Winter276887b2007-03-12 16:11:39 +0000227- Patch #922167: Python no longer segfaults when faced with infinitely
228 self-recursive reload() calls (as reported by bug #742342).
229
Žiga Seilnacht89032082007-03-11 15:54:54 +0000230- Patch #1675981: remove unreachable code from ``type.__new__()`` method.
231
Collin Wintere38051d2007-03-09 20:33:07 +0000232- Patch #1491866: change the complex() constructor to allow parthensized
233 forms. This means complex(repr(x)) now works instead of raising a
234 ValueError.
235
Georg Brandlaa2321b2007-03-07 00:40:28 +0000236- Patch #703779: unset __file__ in __main__ after running a file. This
237 makes the filenames the warning module prints much more sensible when
238 a PYTHONSTARTUP file is used.
239
Georg Brandl49aafc92007-03-07 00:34:46 +0000240- Variant of patch #697613: don't exit the interpreter on a SystemExit
241 exception if the -i command line option or PYTHONINSPECT environment
242 variable is given, but break into the interactive interpreter just like
243 on other exceptions or normal program exit.

246
Georg Brandl098cd692007-03-06 12:17:50 +0000247- Bug #1674503: close the file opened by execfile() in an error condition.
248
Georg Brandl0fca97a2007-03-05 22:28:08 +0000249- Patch #1674228: when assigning a slice (old-style), check for the
250 sq_ass_slice instead of the sq_slice slot.
251
Neal Norwitz88516a62007-02-26 22:41:45 +0000252- When printing an unraisable error, don't print exceptions. before the name.
253 This duplicates the behavior whening normally printing exceptions.

256
Brett Cannon129bd522007-01-30 21:34:36 +0000257- PEP 352: Raising a string exception now triggers a TypeError. Attempting to
258 catch a string exception raises DeprecationWarning.

1441Core and builtins
1442-----------------
1443
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +00001444- Unicode objects will no longer raise an exception when being
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001445 compared equal or unequal to a string and a UnicodeDecodeError
1446 exception occurs, e.g. as result of a decoding failure.
Neal Norwitz56423e52006-08-13 18:11:08 +00001447
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +00001448 Instead, the equal (==) and unequal (!=) comparison operators will
1449 now issue a UnicodeWarning and interpret the two objects as
1450 unequal. The UnicodeWarning can be filtered as desired using
1451 the warning framework, e.g. silenced completely, turned into an
1452 exception, logged, etc.
1453
1454 Note that compare operators other than equal and unequal will still
1455 raise UnicodeDecodeError exceptions as they've always done.
Neal Norwitz8a87f5d2006-08-12 17:03:09 +00001456
Marc-André Lemburg757ea272006-08-14 11:44:34 +00001457- Fix segfault when doing string formatting on subclasses of long.
1458
1459- Fix bug related to __len__ functions using values > 2**32 on 64-bit machines
1460 with new-style classes.
1461
1462- Fix bug related to __len__ functions returning negative values with
1463 classic classes.
1464
1465- Patch #1538606, Fix __index__() clipping. There were some problems
1466 discovered with the API and how integers that didn't fit into Py_ssize_t
1467 were handled. This patch attempts to provide enough alternatives
1468 to effectively use __index__.
1469
Martin v. Löwisab2f8f72006-08-09 07:57:39 +00001470- Bug #1536021: __hash__ may now return long int; the final hash
1471 value is obtained by invoking hash on the long int.
1472
Thomas Hellerab1049c2006-08-08 17:37:00 +00001473- Bug #1536786: buffer comparison could emit a RuntimeWarning.
1474
Georg Brandl7e3ba2a2006-08-06 08:23:54 +00001475- Bug #1535165: fixed a segfault in input() and raw_input() when
1476 sys.stdin is closed.
1477
Thomas Heller74d36f02006-08-04 18:17:40 +00001478- On Windows, the PyErr_Warn function is now exported from
1479 the Python dll again.
1480
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +00001481- Bug #1191458: tracing over for loops now produces a line event
1482 on each iteration. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc
1483 magic number. This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5c1
1484 will be regenerated.
1485
Neal Norwitz0cbd8052006-08-04 05:09:28 +00001486- Bug #1333982: string/number constants were inappropriately stored
1487 in the byte code and co_consts even if they were not used, ie
1488 immediately popped off the stack.
1489
Georg Brandle9462c72006-08-04 18:03:37 +00001490- Fixed a reference-counting problem in property().
1491
Neal Norwitzff4b63b2006-08-04 04:50:21 +00001492
1493Library
1494-------
1495
Neil Schemenauer4c6b0d52006-08-16 23:38:05 +00001496- Fix a bug in the ``compiler`` package that caused invalid code to be
1497 generated for generator expressions.
1498
Marc-André Lemburg574cfea2006-08-16 16:11:01 +00001499- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0. The change to
1500 keep it programmatically in sync with the Python version running
1501 the code (introduced in 2.5b3) has been reverted. It will continue
1502 to be maintained manually as static string literal.
1503
Andrew M. Kuchlingc13324e2006-08-16 17:11:18 +00001504- If the Python part of a ctypes callback function returns None,
Thomas Hellerb4a0cf12006-08-16 15:10:12 +00001505 and this cannot be converted to the required C type, an exception is
1506 printed with PyErr_WriteUnraisable. Before this change, the C
Andrew M. Kuchlingc13324e2006-08-16 17:11:18 +00001507 callback returned arbitrary values to the calling code.
Thomas Hellerb4a0cf12006-08-16 15:10:12 +00001508
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001509- The __repr__ method of a NULL ctypes.py_object() no longer raises
Thomas Hellerb0aa98f2006-08-16 14:07:44 +00001510 an exception.
1511
Tim Petersc10c9d02006-09-05 02:18:09 +00001512- uuid.UUID now has a bytes_le attribute. This returns the UUID in
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001513 little-endian byte order for Windows. In addition, uuid.py gained some
Anthony Baxter58179592006-08-16 13:08:25 +00001514 workarounds for clocks with low resolution, to stop the code yielding
1515 duplicate UUIDs.
1516
Kurt B. Kaiserd112bc72006-08-16 05:01:42 +00001517- Patch #1540892: site.py Quitter() class attempts to close sys.stdin
1518 before raising SystemExit, allowing IDLE to honor quit() and exit().
1519
Neal Norwitzbf8c1952006-08-15 04:14:57 +00001520- Bug #1224621: make tabnanny recognize IndentationErrors raised by tokenize.
1521
Georg Brandl7a1af772006-08-14 21:55:28 +00001522- Patch #1536071: trace.py should now find the full module name of a
1523 file correctly even on Windows.
1524
Georg Brandl0a7d1bb2006-08-11 07:26:10 +00001525- logging's atexit hook now runs even if the rest of the module has
1526 already been cleaned up.
1527
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001528- Bug #1112549, fix DoS attack on cgi.FieldStorage.
Guido van Rossum133f4e42006-08-10 17:42:50 +00001529
Neal Norwitzff4b63b2006-08-04 04:50:21 +00001530- Bug #1531405, format_exception no longer raises an exception if
1531 str(exception) raised an exception.
1532
Neil Schemenauer06ded092006-08-04 16:20:30 +00001533- Fix a bug in the ``compiler`` package that caused invalid code to be
1534 generated for nested functions.
1535
Neal Norwitzff4b63b2006-08-04 04:50:21 +00001536

Georg Brandl3335a7a2006-08-14 21:42:55 +00001542- Patch #1535500: fix segfault in BZ2File.writelines and make sure it
1543 raises the correct exceptions.
1544
Thomas Heller1ce433e2006-08-14 16:20:04 +00001545- Patch # 1536908: enable building ctypes on OpenBSD/AMD64. The
1546 '-no-stack-protector' compiler flag for OpenBSD has been removed.
1547
Thomas Heller86720042006-08-14 11:17:48 +00001548- Patch #1532975 was applied, which fixes Bug #1533481: ctypes now
1549 uses the _as_parameter_ attribute when objects are passed to foreign
1550 function calls. The ctypes version number was changed to 1.0.1.
1551
Bob Ippolitoe6c9f982006-08-04 23:59:21 +00001552- Bug #1530559, struct.pack raises TypeError where it used to convert.
1553 Passing float arguments to struct.pack when integers are expected
1554 now triggers a DeprecationWarning.
1555

1604Core and builtins
1605-----------------
1606
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001607- _PyWeakref_GetWeakrefCount() now returns a Py_ssize_t; it previously
Neal Norwitzc5e060d2006-08-02 06:14:22 +00001608 returned a long (see PEP 353).
1609
Neal Norwitzf71ec5a2006-07-30 06:57:04 +00001610- Bug #1515471: string.replace() accepts character buffers again.
1611
Neal Norwitz07aadb12006-07-30 06:55:48 +00001612- Add PyErr_WarnEx() so C code can pass the stacklevel to warnings.warn().
1613 This provides the proper warning for struct.pack().
1614 PyErr_Warn() is now deprecated in favor of PyErr_WarnEx().
1615
Neal Norwitz0d62a062006-07-30 06:53:31 +00001616- Patch #1531113: Fix augmented assignment with yield expressions.
1617 Also fix a SystemError when trying to assign to yield expressions.
1618
Phillip J. Ebyf7575d02006-07-28 21:12:07 +00001619- Bug #1529871: The speed enhancement patch #921466 broke Python's compliance
1620 with PEP 302. This was fixed by adding an ``imp.NullImporter`` type that is
1621 used in ``sys.path_importer_cache`` to cache non-directory paths and avoid
1622 excessive filesystem operations during imports.
1623
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +00001624- Bug #1521947: When checking for overflow, ``PyOS_strtol()`` used some
1625 operations on signed longs that are formally undefined by C.
1626 Unfortunately, at least one compiler now cares about that, so complicated
1627 the code to make that compiler happy again.
1628
Martin v. Löwis982e9fe2006-07-24 12:54:17 +00001629- Bug #1524310: Properly report errors from FindNextFile in os.listdir.

1639 had more than 255 blank lines.
1640
Georg Brandl9dceedb2006-07-12 15:31:17 +00001641- Patch #1521179: Python now accepts the standard options ``--help`` and
1642 ``--version`` as well as ``/?`` on Windows.
1643
Andrew M. Kuchling93c928e2006-07-26 17:19:39 +00001644- Bug #1520864: unpacking singleton tuples in a 'for' loop (for x, in) works
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +00001645 again. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc magic number.
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +00001646 This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5b3 will be regenerated.
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +00001647
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +00001648- Bug #1524317: Compiling Python ``--without-threads`` failed.
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001649 The Python core compiles again, and, in a build without threads, the
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +00001650 new ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dictionary with one entry,
1651 mapping the faux "thread id" 0 to the current frame.
1652
Ronald Oussoren3075e162006-07-25 20:28:55 +00001653- Bug #1525447: build on MacOS X on a case-sensitive filesystem.

1658
Facundo Batista6e22be72008-01-19 18:45:46 +00001659- Fix #1693149. Now you can pass several modules separated by
1660 comma to trace.py in the same --ignore-module option.
1661
Martin v. Löwis961b91b2006-08-02 13:53:55 +00001662- Correction of patch #1455898: In the mbcs decoder, set final=False
1663 for stream decoder, but final=True for the decode function.
1664
Georg Brandl07fec3a2006-08-01 18:49:24 +00001665- os.urandom no longer masks unrelated exceptions like SystemExit or
1666 KeyboardInterrupt.
1667
Tim Peters4643c2f2006-08-10 22:45:34 +00001668- Bug #1525866: Don't copy directory stat times in
Martin v. Löwis4e678382006-07-30 13:00:31 +00001669 shutil.copytree on Windows
1670
Georg Brandle34ac7c2006-07-30 11:07:23 +00001671- Bug #1002398: The documentation for os.path.sameopenfile now correctly
1672 refers to file descriptors, not file objects.
1673
Tim Petersc10c9d02006-09-05 02:18:09 +00001674- The renaming of the xml package to xmlcore, and the import hackery done
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001675 to make it appear at both names, has been removed. Bug #1511497,
Fred Drakefbdeaad2006-07-29 16:56:15 +00001676 #1513611, and probably others.
1677
Georg Brandledd9b0d2006-07-29 09:33:26 +00001678- Bug #1441397: The compiler module now recognizes module and function
1679 docstrings correctly as it did in Python 2.4.
1680
Tim Peters6f681472006-07-27 23:44:37 +00001681- Bug #1529297: The rewrite of doctest for Python 2.4 unintentionally
1682 lost that tests are sorted by name before being run. This rarely
1683 matters for well-written tests, but can create baffling symptoms if
1684 side effects from one test to the next affect outcomes. ``DocTestFinder``
1685 has been changed to sort the list of tests it returns.
1686
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001687- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0, and is now kept
Martin v. Löwis1f30c372006-07-30 13:14:05 +00001688 in sync with sys.version_info[:3].
Martin v. Löwis997ceff2006-07-27 06:38:16 +00001689
Martin v. Löwis9298eff2006-07-26 12:12:56 +00001690- Bug #978833: Really close underlying socket in _socketobject.close.
1691
Georg Brandl8c036cc2006-08-20 13:15:39 +00001692- Bug #1459963: urllib and urllib2 now normalize HTTP header names with
1693 title().
Georg Brandl0619a322006-07-26 07:40:17 +00001694
Georg Brandlcf0c1722006-07-26 07:23:32 +00001695- Patch #1525766: In pkgutil.walk_packages, correctly pass the onerror callback
1696 to recursive calls and call it with the failing package name.
1697
Martin v. Löwis0b483032006-07-25 09:53:12 +00001698- Bug #1525817: Don't truncate short lines in IDLE's tool tips.
1699
Georg Brandlc13c34c2006-07-24 14:09:56 +00001700- Patch #1515343: Fix printing of deprecated string exceptions with a
1701 value in the traceback module.
1702
Greg Ward48fae7a2006-07-23 16:05:51 +00001703- Resync optparse with Optik 1.5.3: minor tweaks for/to tests.
1704
Martin v. Löwis426f4a12006-07-18 17:46:31 +00001705- Patch #1524429: Use repr() instead of backticks in Tkinter again.
1706
Brett Cannoncaebe222006-07-18 04:41:36 +00001707- Bug #1520914: Change time.strftime() to accept a zero for any position in its
1708 argument tuple. For arguments where zero is illegal, the value is forced to
1709 the minimum value that is correct. This is to support an undocumented but
1710 common way people used to fill in inconsequential information in the time
1711 tuple pre-2.4.
1712
Bob Ippolito5ea4bf12006-07-15 16:53:15 +00001713- Patch #1220874: Update the binhex module for Mach-O.
1714
Barry Warsawb110bad2006-07-21 14:51:07 +00001715- The email package has improved RFC 2231 support, specifically for
1716 recognizing the difference between encoded (name*0*=<blah>) and non-encoded
1717 (name*0=<blah>) parameter continuations. This may change the types of
1718 values returned from email.message.Message.get_param() and friends.
1719 Specifically in some cases where non-encoded continuations were used,
1720 get_param() used to return a 3-tuple of (None, None, string) whereas now it
1721 will just return the string (since non-encoded continuations don't have
1722 charset and language parts).
1723
1724 Also, whereas % values were decoded in all parameter continuations, they are
1725 now only decoded in encoded parameter parts.
1726

Barry Warsaw00decd72006-07-27 23:43:15 +00001732- Patch #1520294: Support for getset and member descriptors in types.py,
1733 inspect.py, and pydoc.py. Specifically, this allows for querying the type
1734 of an object against these built-in types and more importantly, for getting
1735 their docstrings printed in the interactive interpreter's help() function.

1783
Georg Brandl4793aa32006-07-28 18:31:39 +00001784- Patch #1529686: The standard tests ``test_defaultdict``, ``test_iterlen``,

Neal Norwitz28746ab2006-07-09 22:14:42 +00001831- On 64 bit systems, int literals that use less than 64 bits are
1832 now ints rather than longs.
1833
Neal Norwitzed657552006-07-10 00:04:44 +00001834- Bug #1512814, Fix incorrect lineno's when code at module scope
1835 started after line 256.
1836
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +00001837- New function ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dict mapping thread
1838 id to topmost thread stack frame. This is for expert use, and is
1839 especially useful for debugging application deadlocks. The functionality
1840 was previously available in Fazal Majid's ``threadframe`` extension
1841 module, but it wasn't possible to do this in a wholly threadsafe way from
1842 an extension.

1859
Thomas Woutersadd19112006-07-05 11:03:49 +00001860- string.Template() now correctly handles tuple-values. Previously,

1889
Brett Cannon53ab5b72006-06-22 16:49:14 +00001890- Bug #1510580: The 'warnings' module improperly required that a Warning
1891 category be either a types.ClassType and a subclass of Warning. The proper
1892 check is just that it is a subclass with Warning as the documentation states.
1893
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +00001894- The compiler module now correctly compiles the new try-except-finally

Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +00001909- #1494314: Fix a regression with high-numbered sockets in 2.4.3. This
1910 means that select() on sockets > FD_SETSIZE (typically 1024) work again.
1911 The patch makes sockets use poll() internally where available.
Anthony Baxter93ab5fa2006-07-11 02:04:09 +00001912
Thomas Hellerb9cb84f2006-07-10 11:17:37 +00001913- Assigning None to pointer type fields in ctypes structures possible

Thomas Woutersfc34f6c2006-07-06 10:48:28 +00001946 Previously, the slight difference could cause compilation errors of the
1947 'zlib' module on systems with more than one version of zlib.
1948
Martin v. Löwis4cbd05c2006-07-06 07:05:21 +00001949- The MSI compileall step was fixed to also support a TARGETDIR

1981-----------------
1982
Georg Brandla56b9152006-06-19 06:35:54 +00001983- Patch #1507676: Error messages returned by invalid abstract object operations
1984 (such as iterating over an integer) have been improved and now include the
1985 type of the offending object to help with debugging.
1986
Brett Cannonea3912b2006-06-13 21:46:41 +00001987- Bug #992017: A classic class that defined a __coerce__() method that returned
1988 its arguments swapped would infinitely recurse and segfault the interpreter.
1989
Neal Norwitz909eb122006-06-12 02:13:21 +00001990- Fix the socket tests so they can be run concurrently.
1991
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +00001992- Removed 5 integers from C frame objects (PyFrameObject).
Vinay Sajip28e57612006-07-01 10:45:20 +00001993 f_nlocals, f_ncells, f_nfreevars, f_stack_size, f_restricted.
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +00001994
Brett Cannon22565aa2006-06-09 22:31:23 +00001995- Bug #532646: object.__call__() will continue looking for the __call__
1996 attribute on objects until one without one is found. This leads to recursion
1997 when you take a class and set its __call__ attribute to an instance of the
1998 class. Originally fixed for classic classes, but this fix is for new-style.
1999 Removes the infinite_rec_3 crasher.
2000
Georg Brandl24250812006-06-09 18:45:48 +00002001- The string and unicode methods startswith() and endswith() now accept
2002 a tuple of prefixes/suffixes to look for. Implements RFE #1491485.
2003
Brett Cannonde3b0522006-06-08 17:00:45 +00002004- Buffer objects, at the C level, never used the char buffer
2005 implementation even when the char buffer for the wrapped object was
2006 explicitly requested (originally returned the read or write buffer).
2007 Now a TypeError is raised if the char buffer is not present but is
2008 requested.
2009
Georg Brandlddbaa662006-06-04 21:56:52 +00002010- Patch #1346214: Statements like "if 0: suite" are now again optimized
2011 away like they were in Python 2.4.
2012
Georg Brandlb7c8f542006-05-27 12:30:25 +00002013- Builtin exceptions are now full-blown new-style classes instead of
2014 instances pretending to be classes, which speeds up exception handling
2015 by about 80% in comparison to 2.5a2.
2016
Martin v. Löwisd004fc82006-05-27 08:36:52 +00002017- Patch #1494554: Update unicodedata.numeric and unicode.isnumeric to
2018 Unicode 4.1.
2019
Georg Brandlf4ef1162006-05-26 18:03:31 +00002020- Patch #921466: sys.path_importer_cache is now used to cache valid and
2021 invalid file paths for the built-in import machinery which leads to
2022 fewer open calls on startup.
2023
Tim Peters696cf432006-05-24 21:10:40 +00002024- Patch #1442927: ``long(str, base)`` is now up to 6x faster for non-power-
2025 of-2 bases. The largest speedup is for inputs with about 1000 decimal
2026 digits. Conversion from non-power-of-2 bases remains quadratic-time in
2027 the number of input digits (it was and remains linear-time for bases
2028 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32).
2029
Tim Petersb713ec22006-05-23 18:45:30 +00002030- Bug #1334662: ``int(string, base)`` could deliver a wrong answer
2031 when ``base`` was not 2, 4, 8, 10, 16 or 32, and ``string`` represented
2032 an integer close to ``sys.maxint``. This was repaired by patch
2033 #1335972, which also gives a nice speedup.
2034
Richard Jonescebbefc2006-05-23 18:28:17 +00002035- Patch #1337051: reduced size of frame objects.
2036
2037- PyErr_NewException now accepts a tuple of base classes as its
2038 "base" parameter.
2039
Richard Jones7c88dcc2006-05-23 10:37:38 +00002040- Patch #876206: function call speedup by retaining allocated frame
2041 objects.
2042
Georg Brandl7b90e162006-05-18 07:01:27 +00002043- Bug #1462152: file() now checks more thoroughly for invalid mode
2044 strings and removes a possible "U" before passing the mode to the
2045 C library function.
2046
Neal Norwitz1004a532006-05-15 07:17:23 +00002047- Patch #1488312, Fix memory alignment problem on SPARC in unicode
2048
Neal Norwitz373f0a72006-05-15 07:04:36 +00002049- Bug #1487966: Fix SystemError with conditional expression in assignment
2050
Martin v. Löwis879768d2006-05-11 13:28:43 +00002051- WindowsError now has two error code attributes: errno, which carries
2052 the error values from errno.h, and winerror, which carries the error
2053 values from winerror.h. Previous versions put the winerror.h values
2054 (from GetLastError()) into the errno attribute.
2055
Martin v. Löwis77736712006-05-04 05:51:03 +00002056- Patch #1475845: Raise IndentationError for unexpected indent.
2057
Neal Norwitzc4edb0e2006-05-02 04:43:14 +00002058- Patch #1479181: split open() and file() from being aliases for each other.
2059
Tim Peters44bd9862006-06-01 13:49:23 +00002060- Patch #1497053 & bug #1275608: Exceptions occurring in ``__eq__()``
2061 methods were always silently ignored by dictionaries when comparing keys.
2062 They are now passed through (except when using the C API function
2063 ``PyDict_GetItem()``, whose semantics did not change).
2064
2065- Bug #1456209: In some obscure cases it was possible for a class with a
2066 custom ``__eq__()`` method to confuse dict internals when class instances
2067 were used as a dict's keys and the ``__eq__()`` method mutated the dict.
2068 No, you don't have any code that did this ;-)

2076
Brett Cannon6ee7d012006-06-08 16:23:04 +00002077- Change binascii.hexlify to accept a read-only buffer instead of only a char
2078 buffer and actually follow its documentation.
2079

2081
Nick Coghlanc649ec52006-05-29 12:43:05 +00002082- Patch #1478788 (modified version): The functional extension module has
2083 been renamed to _functools and a functools Python wrapper module added.
2084 This provides a home for additional function related utilities that are
2085 not specifically about functional programming. See PEP 309.
2086

Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +00002097- On Win32, os.listdir now supports arbitrarily-long Unicode path names
2098 (up to the system limit of 32K characters).
2099
2100- Use Win32 API to implement os.{access,chdir,chmod,mkdir,remove,rename,rmdir,utime}.
2101 As a result, these functions now raise WindowsError instead of OSError.
2102
Tim Peters7a822da2006-05-25 21:50:17 +00002103- ``time.clock()`` on Win64 should use the high-performance Windows
2104 ``QueryPerformanceCounter()`` now (as was already the case on 32-bit
2105 Windows platforms).
2106
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +00002107- Calling Tk_Init twice is refused if the first call failed as that
2108 may deadlock.

2111 accept it without potentially using an uninitialized pointer.
2112
2113- bsddb: added support for the DBEnv.log_stat() and DBEnv.lsn_reset() methods
2114 assuming BerkeleyDB >= 4.0 and 4.4 respectively. [pybsddb project SF

2124 results. It could previously incorrectly return 0 in some cases.
2125 Fixes SF bug 1493322 (pybsddb bug 1184012).
2126
Gregory P. Smithff7d9912006-06-08 05:17:08 +00002127- bsddb: the bsddb.dbtables Modify method now raises the proper error and
2128 aborts the db transaction safely when a modifier callback fails.
2129 Fixes SF python patch/bug #1408584.
2130
Gregory P. Smith506f7b52006-06-15 08:52:32 +00002131- bsddb: multithreaded DB access using the simple bsddb module interface
Vinay Sajip28e57612006-07-01 10:45:20 +00002132 now works reliably. It has been updated to use automatic BerkeleyDB

2164 double-byte encodings.
2165
Tim Peters43898b42006-06-14 04:09:25 +00002166- ``difflib``'s ``SequenceMatcher.get_matching_blocks()`` was changed to
2167 guarantee that adjacent triples in the return list always describe
2168 non-adjacent blocks. Previously, a pair of matching blocks could end
2169 up being described by multiple adjacent triples that formed a partition
2170 of the matching pair.
2171
Greg Ward0e0c9f42006-06-11 16:24:11 +00002172- Bug #1498146: fix optparse to handle Unicode strings in option help,

2181
Nick Coghlan676725d2006-06-08 13:54:49 +00002182- The functions update_wrapper() and wraps() have been added to the functools
2183 module. These make it easier to copy relevant metadata from the original
2184 function when writing wrapper functions.
2185

2187 ``doctest.is_private()`` function, both deprecated in 2.4, were removed.
Tim Petersbf0400a2006-06-05 01:43:03 +00002188
Martin v. Löwis3f767792006-06-04 19:36:28 +00002189- Patch #1359618: Speed up charmap encoder by using a trie structure
2190 for lookup.
2191
Tim Petersd609b1a2006-06-02 23:22:51 +00002192- The functions in the ``pprint`` module now sort dictionaries by key
2193 before computing the display. Before 2.5, ``pprint`` sorted a dictionary
2194 if and only if its display required more than one line, although that
2195 wasn't documented. The new behavior increases predictability; e.g.,
2196 using ``pprint.pprint(a_dict)`` in a doctest is now reliable.
2197
Georg Brandlfd9a4b12006-05-29 20:57:01 +00002198- Patch #1497027: try HTTP digest auth before basic auth in urllib2

2216 tarfiles.
2217
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +00002218- Patch #721464: pdb.Pdb instances can now be given explicit stdin and

2275
Thomas Heller1b046642006-04-18 18:51:06 +00002276- Bug #1465834: 'bdist_wininst preinstall script support' was fixed
2277 by converting these apis from macros into exported functions again:
2278
2279 PyParser_SimpleParseFile PyParser_SimpleParseString PyRun_AnyFile

2284
Martin v. Löwis45294a92006-04-18 06:24:08 +00002285- Under COUNT_ALLOCS, types are not necessarily immortal anymore.
2286
Martin v. Löwis19ab6c92006-04-16 18:55:50 +00002287- All uses of PyStructSequence_InitType have been changed to initialize
2288 the type objects only once, even if the interpreter is initialized
2289 multiple times.
2290
Neal Norwitz61546162006-04-14 05:20:28 +00002291- Bug #1454485, array.array('u') could crash the interpreter. This was
2292 due to PyArgs_ParseTuple(args, 'u#', ...) trying to convert buffers (strings)
2293 to unicode when it didn't make sense. 'u#' now requires a unicode string.
2294
2295- Py_UNICODE is unsigned. It was always documented as unsigned, but
2296 due to a bug had a signed value in previous versions.
2297
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00002298- Patch #837242: ``id()`` of any Python object always gives a positive
2299 number now, which might be a long integer. ``PyLong_FromVoidPtr`` and
2300 ``PyLong_AsVoidPtr`` have been changed accordingly. Note that it has
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00002301 never been correct to implement a ``__hash()__`` method that returns the
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00002302 ``id()`` of an object:
Martin v. Löwis0bc2ab92006-04-10 20:28:17 +00002303
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00002304 def __hash__(self):
2305 return id(self) # WRONG
2306
2307 because a hash result must be a (short) Python int but it was always
2308 possible for ``id()`` to return a Python long. However, because ``id()``
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00002309 could return negative values before, on a 32-bit box an ``id()`` result
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00002310 was always usable as a hash value before this patch. That's no longer
2311 necessarily so.
2312
2313- Python on OS X 10.3 and above now uses dlopen() (via dynload_shlib.c)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00002314 to load extension modules and now provides the dl module. As a result,
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00002315 sys.setdlopenflags() now works correctly on these systems. (SF patch
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00002316 #1454844)
2317
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00002318- Patch #1463867: enhanced garbage collection to allow cleanup of cycles
2319 involving generators that have paused outside of any ``try`` or ``with``
2320 blocks. (In 2.5a1, a paused generator that was part of a reference
2321 cycle could not be garbage collected, regardless of whether it was
2322 paused in a ``try`` or ``with`` block.)

2437
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00002438- The test_contextlib test in 2.5a1 wasn't actually run unless you ran
2439 it separately and by hand. It also wasn't cleaning up its changes to
2440 the current Decimal context.
2441
Thomas Woutersabd08882006-04-26 15:53:30 +00002442- regrtest.py now has a -M option to run tests that test the new limits of
2443 containers, on 64-bit architectures. Running these tests is only sensible
2444 on 64-bit machines with more than two gigabytes of memory. The argument
2445 passed is the maximum amount of memory for the tests to use.

2472-----------------
2473
Nick Coghlan43832302006-04-23 17:04:07 +00002474- PEP 338: -m command line switch now delegates to runpy.run_module
2475 allowing it to support modules in packages and zipfiles
2476
Martin v. Löwisc661b882006-04-20 04:54:23 +00002477- On Windows, .DLL is not an accepted file name extension for
2478 extension modules anymore; extensions are only found if they
2479 end in .PYD.
2480
Martin v. Löwisea62d252006-04-03 10:56:49 +00002481- Bug #1421664: sys.stderr.encoding is now set to the same value as
2482 sys.stdout.encoding.
2483
Neal Norwitz92e212f2006-04-03 04:48:37 +00002484- __import__ accepts keyword arguments.
2485
Georg Brandlccadf842006-03-31 18:54:53 +00002486- Patch #1460496: round() now accepts keyword arguments.
2487
Anthony Baxter262c00a2006-03-30 10:53:17 +00002488- Fixed bug #1459029 - unicode reprs were double-escaped.
2489
Hye-Shik Changd478f342006-03-23 12:32:36 +00002490- Patch #1396919: The system scope threads are reenabled on FreeBSD
2491 5.4 and later versions.
2492
Neal Norwitze98ccf62006-03-23 05:39:47 +00002493- Bug #1115379: Compiling a Unicode string with an encoding declaration
2494 now gives a SyntaxError.
2495
Georg Brandlabd1ff82006-03-18 07:59:59 +00002496- Previously, Python code had no easy way to access the contents of a
2497 cell object. Now, a ``cell_contents`` attribute has been added
2498 (closes patch #1170323).
2499
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00002500- Patch #1123430: Python's small-object allocator now returns an arena to
2501 the system ``free()`` when all memory within an arena becomes unused
2502 again. Prior to Python 2.5, arenas (256KB chunks of memory) were never
2503 freed. Some applications will see a drop in virtual memory size now,
2504 especially long-running applications that, from time to time, temporarily
2505 use a large number of small objects. Note that when Python returns an
2506 arena to the platform C's ``free()``, there's no guarantee that the
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00002507 platform C library will in turn return that memory to the operating system.
2508 The effect of the patch is to stop making that impossible, and in tests it
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00002509 appears to be effective at least on Microsoft C and gcc-based systems.
2510 Thanks to Evan Jones for hard work and patience.
2511
Georg Brandl533ff6f2006-03-08 18:09:27 +00002512- Patch #1434038: property() now uses the getter's docstring if there is
2513 no "doc" argument given. This makes it possible to legitimately use
2514 property() as a decorator to produce a read-only property.
2515
Guido van Rossum9aa37ab2006-03-07 18:54:08 +00002516- PEP 357, patch 1436368: add an __index__ method to int/long and a matching
2517 nb_index slot to the PyNumberMethods struct. The slot is consulted instead
2518 of requiring an int or long in slicing and a few other contexts, enabling
2519 other objects (e.g. Numeric Python's integers) to be used as slice indices.
2520
Neal Norwitz995acdf2006-03-07 05:01:00 +00002521- Fixed various bugs reported by Coverity's Prevent tool.
2522
Brett Cannonbf364092006-03-01 04:25:17 +00002523- PEP 352, patch #1104669: Make exceptions new-style objects. Introduced the
2524 new exception base class, BaseException, which has a new message attribute.
2525 KeyboardInterrupt and SystemExit to directly inherit from BaseException now.
2526 Raising a string exception now raises a DeprecationWarning.
2527
Thomas Woutersfb609f42006-02-28 16:37:25 +00002528- Patch #1438387, PEP 328: relative and absolute imports. Imports can now be
2529 explicitly relative, using 'from .module import name' to mean 'from the same
2530 package as this module is in. Imports without dots still default to the
2531 old relative-then-absolute, unless 'from __future__ import
2532 absolute_import' is used.
2533
Brett Cannona7446e32006-02-27 23:39:10 +00002534- Properly check if 'warnings' raises an exception (usually when a filter set
2535 to "error" is triggered) when raising a warning for raising string
2536 exceptions.
2537
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002538- CO_GENERATOR_ALLOWED is no longer defined. This behavior is the default.
Neal Norwitz0023a2f2006-02-27 23:24:48 +00002539 The name was removed from Include/code.h.
2540
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002541- PEP 308: conditional expressions were added: (x if cond else y).
Neal Norwitzeb651252006-02-27 16:47:12 +00002542
Guido van Rossum1968ad32006-02-25 22:38:04 +00002543- Patch 1433928:
2544 - The copy module now "copies" function objects (as atomic objects).
2545 - dict.__getitem__ now looks for a __missing__ hook before raising
2546 KeyError.
2547
Tim Peters84ef21c2006-02-28 20:39:06 +00002548- PEP 343: with statement implemented. Needs ``from __future__ import
2549 with_statement``. Use of 'with' as a variable will generate a warning.
2550 Use of 'as' as a variable will also generate a warning (unless it's
Neal Norwitz055ec242006-02-28 20:06:49 +00002551 part of an import statement).
Guido van Rossum1a5e21e2006-02-28 21:57:43 +00002552 The following objects have __context__ methods:
2553 - The built-in file type.
2554 - The thread.LockType type.
2555 - The following types defined by the threading module:
2556 Lock, RLock, Condition, Semaphore, BoundedSemaphore.
2557 - The decimal.Context class.
Guido van Rossumc2e20742006-02-27 22:32:47 +00002558
Marc-André Lemburgfe4b34c2006-02-19 15:22:22 +00002559- Fix the encodings package codec search function to only search
2560 inside its own package. Fixes problem reported in patch #1433198.
2561
2562 Note: Codec packages should implement and register their own
2563 codec search function. PEP 100 has the details.
2564
Tim Peters9ea89d22006-06-04 03:26:02 +00002565- PEP 353: Using ``Py_ssize_t`` as the index type.
2566
2567- ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` builds now add ``4*sizeof(size_t)`` bytes of debugging
2568 info to each allocated block, since the ``Py_ssize_t`` changes (PEP 353)
2569 now allow Python to make use of memory blocks exceeding 2**32 bytes for
2570 some purposes on 64-bit boxes. A ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` build was limited
2571 to 4-byte allocations before.
Martin v. Löwis18e16552006-02-15 17:27:45 +00002572
Neal Norwitzfc76d632006-01-10 06:03:13 +00002573- Patch #1400181, fix unicode string formatting to not use the locale.
2574 This is how string objects work. u'%f' could use , instead of .
2575 for the decimal point. Now both strings and unicode always use periods.
2576
Neal Norwitz671b9e32006-01-09 07:07:12 +00002577- Bug #1244610, #1392915, fix build problem on OpenBSD 3.7 and 3.8.
2578 configure would break checking curses.h.
2579
Georg Brandlcd4d1e82005-12-27 17:37:07 +00002580- Bug #959576: The pwd module is now builtin. This allows Python to be
2581 built on UNIX platforms without $HOME set.
2582
Neal Norwitzc10978f2005-12-19 06:07:16 +00002583- Bug #1072182, fix some potential problems if characters are signed.
2584
Neal Norwitz5d0ad502005-12-19 04:27:42 +00002585- Bug #889500, fix line number on SyntaxWarning for global declarations.
2586
Neal Norwitzdb83eb32005-12-18 05:29:30 +00002587- Bug #1378022, UTF-8 files with a leading BOM crashed the interpreter.
2588
Neal Norwitze7214a12005-12-18 05:03:17 +00002589- Support for converting hex strings to floats no longer works.
2590 This was not portable. float('0x3') now raises a ValueError.
2591
Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00002592- Patch #1382163: Expose Subversion revision number to Python. New C API

Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00002594 is now displayed in interactive prompt banner.
2595
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00002596- Implementation of PEP 341 - Unification of try/except and try/finally.
2597 "except" clauses can now be written together with a "finally" clause in
Neal Norwitz11ca77e2005-12-17 22:24:12 +00002598 one try statement instead of two nested ones. Patch #1355913.

Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00002611
Marc-André Lemburga5bafc42005-10-23 13:43:40 +00002612- Replaced most Unicode charmap codecs with new ones using the
2613 new Unicode translate string feature in the builtin charmap
2614 codec; the codecs were created from the mapping tables available
2615 at ftp.unicode.org and contain a few updates (e.g. the Mac OS
2616 encodings now include a mapping for the Apple logo)
2617
Tim Peterse3547fd2005-12-16 23:13:57 +00002618- Added a few more codecs for Mac OS encodings

2637
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002638- All iterators now have a Boolean value of True. Formerly, some iterators
Raymond Hettinger6b27cda2005-09-24 21:23:05 +00002639 supported a __len__() method which evaluated to False when the iterator

2665
Raymond Hettinger9f1a6792005-07-31 01:16:36 +00002666- The implementation of set() and frozenset() was revised to use its
2667 own internal data structure. Memory consumption is reduced by 1/3
2668 and there are modest speed-ups as well. The API is unchanged.
2669
Tim Petersde7990b2005-07-17 23:45:23 +00002670- SF bug #1238681: freed pointer is used in longobject.c:long_pow().

2674
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002675- SF bug #1185883: Python's small-object memory allocator took over
2676 a block managed by the platform C library whenever a realloc specified
2677 a small new size. However, there's no portable way to know then how
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002678 much of the address space following the pointer is valid, so there's no
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002679 portable way to copy data from the C-managed block into Python's
2680 small-object space without risking a memory fault. Python's small-object
2681 realloc now leaves such blocks under the control of the platform C
2682 realloc.
2683
Michael W. Hudsonb8963812005-07-05 15:21:58 +00002684- SF bug #1232517: An overflow error was not detected properly when

2686
Raymond Hettinger3296e692005-06-29 23:29:56 +00002687- SF bug #1224347: hex longs now print with lowercase letters just
2688 like their int counterparts.
2689
Michael W. Hudson188d4362005-06-20 16:52:57 +00002690- SF bug #1163563: the original fix for bug #1010677 ("thread Module
2691 Breaks PyGILState_Ensure()") broke badly in the case of multiple
2692 interpreter states; back out that fix and do a better job (see

2695
Michael W. Hudsondf888462005-06-03 14:41:55 +00002696- SF patch #1180995: marshal now uses a binary format by default when
2697 serializing floats.
2698
Michael W. Hudsonda85a902005-06-01 11:34:22 +00002699- SF patch #1181301: on platforms that appear to use IEEE 754 floats,
2700 the routines that promise to produce IEEE 754 binary representations
2701 of floats now simply copy bytes around.
2702
Skip Montanarobbf12ba2005-05-20 03:07:06 +00002703- bug #967182: disallow opening files with 'wU' or 'aU' as specified by PEP
2704 278.
2705
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00002706- patch #1109424: int, long, float, complex, and unicode now check for the
2707 proper magic slot for type conversions when subclassed. Previously the
2708 magic slot was ignored during conversion. Semantics now match the way
2709 subclasses of str always behaved. int/long/float, conversion of an instance
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00002710 to the base class has been moved to the proper nb_* magic slot and out of
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00002711 PyNumber_*().
Neal Norwitzcfba5f82006-04-25 05:05:03 +00002712 Thanks Walter Drwald.
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00002713
Barry Warsawc8d907c2005-04-19 23:43:40 +00002714- Descriptors defined in C with a PyGetSetDef structure, where the setter is
2715 NULL, now raise an AttributeError when attempting to set or delete the
2716 attribute. Previously a TypeError was raised, but this was inconsistent
2717 with the equivalent pure-Python implementation.
2718
Michael W. Hudson774479c2005-04-18 08:46:17 +00002719- It is now safe to call PyGILState_Release() before
2720 PyEval_InitThreads() (note that if there is reason to believe there
2721 are multiple threads around you still must call PyEval_InitThreads()
2722 before using the Python API; this fix is for extension modules that
2723 have no way of knowing if Python is multi-threaded yet).
2724
Michael W. Hudsone3afc592005-04-07 10:11:19 +00002725- Typing Ctrl-C whilst raw_input() was waiting in a build with threads
2726 disabled caused a crash.
2727
Michael W. Hudsonb330adf2005-03-31 09:35:44 +00002728- Bug #1165306: instancemethod_new allowed the creation of a method
2729 with im_class == im_self == NULL, which caused a crash when called.
2730
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002731- Move exception finalisation later in the shutdown process - this

2735
Brett Cannon409d8f22005-03-05 06:47:57 +00002736- Defining a class with empty parentheses is now allowed
Brett Cannonf4189912005-04-09 02:30:16 +00002737 (e.g., ``class C(): pass`` is no longer a syntax error).
2738 Patch #1176012 added support to the 'parser' module and 'compiler' package
2739 (thanks to logistix for that added support).

2753
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002754- Bug #1074011: closing sys.std{out,err} now causes a flush() and
Martin v. Löwis8e3ca8a2005-01-23 09:41:49 +00002755 an ferror() call.
2756
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00002757- min() and max() now support key= arguments with the same meaning as in

2770 statement occurs after anything other than a doc string.
2771
Neil Schemenauercf52c072005-08-12 17:34:58 +00002772- Change the %s format specifier for str objects so that it returns a

2774 calling __str__ on the argument returns a unicode instance.
2775
Tim Petersf4e69282006-02-27 17:15:31 +00002776- Patch #1413181: changed ``PyThreadState_Delete()`` to forget about the
2777 current thread state when the auto-GIL-state machinery knows about
2778 it (since the thread state is being deleted, continuing to remember it
2779 can't help, but can hurt if another thread happens to get created with
2780 the same thread id).

Georg Brandl828fdef2006-04-01 08:59:03 +00002991 a DB-API interface in the standard library. You'll need sqlite 3.0.8 or
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00002992 later to build this - if you have an earlier version, the C extension
Anthony Baxterc51ee692006-04-01 00:57:31 +00002993 module will not be built.

3018
Barry Warsaw4d90bbd2006-03-22 02:45:50 +00003019- email 4.0 package now integrated. This is largely the same as the email 3.0
3020 package that was included in Python 2.3, except that PEP 8 module names are
3021 now used (e.g. mail.message instead of email.Message). The MIME classes
3022 have been moved to a subpackage (e.g. email.mime.text instead of
3023 email.MIMEText). The old names are still supported for now. Several
3024 deprecated Message methods have been removed and lots of bugs have been
3025 fixed. More details can be found in the email package documentation.

3299
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00003300- Enhancements to the csv module:
3301
3302 + Dialects are now validated by the underlying C code, better
Georg Brandl7eb4b7d2005-07-22 21:49:32 +00003303 reflecting its capabilities, and improving its compliance with
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00003304 PEP 305.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00003305 + Dialect parameter parsing has been re-implemented to improve error
3306 reporting.
3307 + quotechar=None and quoting=QUOTE_NONE now work the way PEP 305
3308 dictates.
3309 + the parser now removes the escapechar prefix from escaped characters.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00003310 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the writer now tests for numeric
Andrew M. Kuchling6db67822006-04-18 14:04:57 +00003311 types, rather than any object that can be represented as a numeric.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00003312 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the reader now casts unquoted fields
3313 to floats.
Andrew McNamaraf69d94f2005-01-13 11:30:54 +00003314 + reader now allows \r characters to be quoted (previously it only allowed
3315 \n to be quoted).
Andrew McNamarac89f2842005-01-12 07:44:42 +00003316 + writer doublequote handling improved.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00003317 + Dialect classes passed to the module are no longer instantiated by
3318 the module before being parsed (the former validation scheme required
3319 this, but the mechanism was unreliable).
3320 + The dialect registry now contains instances of the internal
3321 C-coded dialect type, rather than references to python objects.
3322 + the internal c-coded dialect type is now immutable.
3323 + register_dialect now accepts the same keyword dialect specifications
3324 as the reader and writer, allowing the user to register dialects
3325 without first creating a dialect class.
3326 + a configurable limit to the size of parsed fields has been added -
3327 previously, an unmatched quote character could result in the entire
3328 file being read into the field buffer before an error was reported.
Andrew McNamara31d88962005-01-12 03:45:10 +00003329 + A new module method csv.field_size_limit() has been added that sets
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00003330 the parser field size limit (returning the former limit). The initial
3331 limit is 128kB.
Andrew McNamara7f2053e2005-01-12 11:17:16 +00003332 + A line_num attribute has been added to the reader object, which tracks
3333 the number of lines read from the source iterator. This is not
3334 the same as the number of records returned, as records can span
3335 multiple lines.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00003336 + reader and writer objects were not being registered with the cyclic-GC.
3337 This has been fixed.
3338
Brett Cannone6539c42005-01-08 02:43:53 +00003339- _DummyThread objects in the threading module now delete self.__block that is
3340 inherited from _Thread since it uses up a lock allocated by 'thread'. The
3341 lock primitives tend to be limited in number and thus should not be wasted on
3342 a _DummyThread object. Fixes bug #1089632.
3343
Raymond Hettinger97db05d2005-01-07 08:15:41 +00003344- The imghdr module now detects Exif files.
3345

3347 (Bug #951915).
3348
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00003349- locale.py now uses an updated locale alias table (built using
3350 Tools/i18n/makelocalealias.py, a tool to parse the X11 locale
3351 alias file); the encoding lookup was enhanced to use Python's
Andrew M. Kuchling88b85822005-08-23 00:57:07 +00003352 encoding alias table.
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00003353
Raymond Hettinger3557f422004-12-07 12:02:02 +00003354- moved deprecated modules to Lib/lib-old: whrandom, tzparse, statcache.
3355
Raymond Hettingera6b45cc2004-12-07 07:05:57 +00003356- the pickle module no longer accepts the deprecated None option in the

3358
Brett Cannon84667c02004-12-07 03:25:18 +00003359- optparse now optionally imports gettext. This allows its use in setup.py.

3366
Raymond Hettingerf3fa9462004-12-05 01:58:09 +00003367- the filecmp module no longer uses the deprecated use_statcache argument.
3368
Raymond Hettinger664347b2004-12-04 21:21:53 +00003369- unittest.TestCase.run() and unittest.TestSuite.run() can now be successfully
3370 extended or overridden by subclasses. Formerly, the subclassed method would
3371 be ignored by the rest of the module. (Bug #1078905).
3372
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00003373- heapq.nsmallest() and heapq.nlargest() now support key= arguments with
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00003374 the same meaning as in list.sort().
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00003375
Walter Dörwald36733692004-12-22 12:50:50 +00003376- Bug #1076985: ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` now calls ``read()`` only
3377 once when a size argument is given. This prevents a buffer overflow in the
3378 tokenizer with very long source lines.
3379
Barry Warsaw538561e2006-01-01 21:48:54 +00003380- Bug #1083110: ``zlib.decompress.flush()`` would segfault if called
3381 immediately after creating the object, without any intervening
3382 ``.decompress()`` calls.
Andrew M. Kuchling3b585b32004-12-28 20:10:48 +00003383
Skip Montanaro05885812005-01-16 20:48:27 +00003384- The reconvert.quote function can now emit triple-quoted strings. The

Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00003386
Walter Dörwaldaf3b39a2005-02-18 13:22:43 +00003387- ``UserString.MutableString`` now supports negative indices in
3388 ``__setitem__`` and ``__delitem__``
3389
Greg Ward40407942005-03-05 02:53:17 +00003390- Bug #1149508: ``textwrap`` now handles hyphenated numbers (eg. "2004-03-05")

Walter Dörwaldbc8e6422005-04-21 21:32:03 +00003393- Partial fixes for SF bugs #1163244 and #1175396: If a chunk read by
3394 ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` has a trailing "\r", read one more
3395 character even if the user has passed a size parameter to get a proper
3396 line ending. Remove the special handling of a "\r\n" that has been split
3397 between two lines.

3401 handlers.
3402
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00003403- Bug #1235646: ``codecs.StreamRecoder.next()`` now reencodes the data it reads
Walter Dörwaldc5238b82005-09-01 11:56:53 +00003404 from the input stream, so that the output is a byte string in the correct
3405 encoding instead of a unicode string.

Walter Dörwald48d5e502006-04-01 07:57:00 +00003420 called as a script (e.g. via ``python -mcalendar``). Localized month and
3421 weekday names can be ouput (even if an exotic encoding is used) using
3422 special classes that use unicode.

3462
Brett Cannon516592f2004-12-07 00:42:59 +00003463- setup.py now uses the directories specified in LDFLAGS using the -L option
3464 and in CPPFLAGS using the -I option for adding library and include
3465 directories, respectively, for compiling extension modules against. This has
3466 led to the core being compiled using the values in CPPFLAGS. It also removes
3467 the need for the special-casing of both DarwinPorts and Fink for darwin since
3468 the proper directories can be specified in LDFLAGS (``-L/sw/lib`` for Fink,
3469 ``-L/opt/local/lib`` for DarwinPorts) and CPPFLAGS (``-I/sw/include`` for
3470 Fink, ``-I/opt/local/include`` for DarwinPorts).

3478-----
3479
Tim Petersc9d78aa2006-03-26 23:27:58 +00003480- ``PyMem_{Del, DEL}`` and ``PyMem_{Free, FREE}`` no longer map to
3481 ``PyObject_{Free, FREE}``. They map to the system ``free()`` now. If memory
3482 is obtained via the ``PyObject_`` family, it must be released via the
3483 ``PyObject_`` family, and likewise for the ``PyMem_`` family. This has
3484 always been officially true, but when Python's small-object allocator was
3485 introduced, an attempt was made to cater to a few extension modules
3486 discovered at the time that obtained memory via ``PyObject_New`` but
3487 released it via ``PyMem_DEL``. It's years later, and if such code still
3488 exists it will fail now (probably with segfaults, but calling wrong
3489 low-level memory management functions can yield many symptoms).
