8=============================================
9
10*Release date: XX-XXX-2008*
11
12Core and Builtins
13-----------------
14
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +000015- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with
16 a unicode argument.
17
Benjamin Peterson17f03ca2008-09-01 14:18:30 +000018- Issue #3683: Fix compilation when --without-threads is given.
19
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +000020- Issue #3668: Fix a memory leak with the "s*" argument parser in
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +000021 PyArg_ParseTuple and friends, which occurred when the argument for "s*"
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +000022 was correctly parsed but parsing of subsequent arguments failed.
23
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +000024- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +000025 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
26 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
27 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
28 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
29 type object.
30
Neal Norwitz18aa3882008-08-24 05:04:52 +000031- Fix crashes on memory allocation failure found with failmalloc.
32
33- Fix memory leaks found with valgrind and update suppressions file.
34
35- Fix compiler warnings in opt mode which would lead to invalid memory reads.
36
37- Fix problem using wrong name in decimal module reported by pychecker.

43 function 'stringlib_contains_obj'.
44
Benjamin Peterson712ee922008-08-24 18:10:20 +000045- Added warnings on the use of ``__getslice__``, ``__setslice__``, or
46 ``__delslice__``.
47
Gregory P. Smith2bb25cc2008-09-02 05:29:51 +000048- Issue #3678: Correctly pass LDFLAGS and LDLAST to the linker on shared
49 library targets in the Makefile.
50
Gregory P. Smith980b99b2008-09-07 05:15:18 +000051- Issue #1204: The configure script now tests for additional libraries
52 that may be required when linking against readline. This fixes issues
53 with x86_64 builds on some platforms (a few Linux flavors and OpenBSD).
54
Benjamin Peterson14cb6bc2008-08-26 17:08:40 +000055C-API

69
70- Issue #3776: Deprecate the bsddb package for removal in 3.0.
Brett Cannon32476fc2008-09-05 18:33:51 +000071
Hirokazu Yamamoto42e459e2008-09-04 14:25:30 +000072- Issue #3762: platform.architecture() fails if python is lanched via
73 its symbolic link.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000140What's New in Python 2.6 beta 3?
141================================
142
Barry Warsaw07a4a382008-08-21 01:15:08 +0000143*Release date: 20-Aug-2008*
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000144
145Core and Builtins
146-----------------
147
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000148- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
149 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
150 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
151 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
152 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
153 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
154 default.
155
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000156- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
157 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
158
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000159- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
160 value again.
161
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000162- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
163 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
164 and introducing s*.
165
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000166- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
167 object was stored in the freelist.
168
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000169- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
170 ValueError consistently across platforms.
171
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000172- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
173 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
174 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
175
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000176- Apply security patches from Apple.
177
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000178- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
179 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
180
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000181- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
182 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
183
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000184- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
185 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
186 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
187
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000188- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
189 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
190 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
191 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
192 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
193 failed have been fixed.
194
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000195Library
196-------
197
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +0000198- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
199
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000200- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
201 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
202
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000203- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
204 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
205 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
206
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000207- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
208 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
209 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
210 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
211 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
212 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
213
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000214- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
215 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
216
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +0000217- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
218
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +0000219- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.
220
Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +0000221- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.
222
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +0000223- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
224 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
225
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +0000226- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
227 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
228
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +0000229- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
230 in a redirect.
231
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000232- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in
Brett Cannon721b1452008-08-16 22:00:27 +0000233 BaseHTTPServer, cgi (and rfc822), httplib.
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000234
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +0000235- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash
236 after a 302 response in the case of not going through a proxy.
237
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +0000238- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
239 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
240 regular expression.
241
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +0000242- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now
243 thread-safe.
244
Brett Cannonbf3157b2008-08-14 05:00:03 +0000245- Silence the DeprecationWarning of rfc822 when it is imported by mimetools
246 since mimetools itself is deprecated. Because modules are cached, all
247 subsequent imports of rfc822 will not raise a visible DeprecationWarning.
248
Antoine Pitrou9fcd4b32008-08-11 17:21:36 +0000249- Issue #3134: shutil referenced undefined WindowsError symbol.
250
Robert Schuppenies14646332008-08-10 11:01:53 +0000251- Issue #1342811: Fix leak in Tkinter.Menu.delete. Commands associated to
252 menu entries were not deleted.
253
Brett Cannon83e81842008-08-09 23:30:55 +0000254- Copied the implementation of reduce() to _functools.reduce() to have a
255 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
256
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +0000257- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise
258 a MemoryError rather than silently stop the iteration.
259
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +0000260- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"
261 to _sre.compile() will now be rejected. This should not affect anybody
262 since the re.compile() function never generates invalid re-bytecode.
263
Skip Montanaroa032bf42008-08-08 22:52:51 +0000264- Issue #3436: Make csv.DictReader's fieldnames attribute a property so that
265 upon first access it can be automatically initialized from the csv file if
266 it wasn't initialized during instantiation.
267
Brett Cannon3aa2a492008-08-06 22:28:09 +0000268- Issue #2338: Create imp.reload() to help with transitioning to Python 3.0 as
269 the reload() built-in has been removed.
270
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +0000271- Changed code in the following modules/packages to remove warnings raised
Brett Cannonc1b76e42008-08-09 23:06:16 +0000272 while running under the ``-3`` flag: aifc, asynchat, asyncore, bdb, bsddb,
Brett Cannon047e4a92008-08-17 04:16:04 +0000273 ConfigParser, cookielib, csv, difflib, distutils, DocXMLRPCServer, email,

Antoine Pitroude781a42008-08-09 12:43:23 +0000283 asking for a specific length. This problem only affected files opened
284 using the new "io" module, not the built-in open() function.
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +0000285

340-----------------
341
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000342- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
343 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
344 an integer using operator.index().
345
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000346- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
347 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
348
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000349- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
350 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
351
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000352- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
353 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
354 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
355
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000356- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
357 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
358 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
359 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
360 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
361 level.
362
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000363- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
364 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
365 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
366 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
367 all imports from that module to fail.
368
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000369- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
370 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
371 new-style classes.
372
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000373- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is

375 another file in sys.stdout.
376
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000377- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
378 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
379 another thread's dictionary.
380
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000381- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
382 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
383 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
384 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
385 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
386 10, -1).
387
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000388- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
389 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
390 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.

429 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000430 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000431 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000902- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
903 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
904 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
905 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
906 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
907 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
908 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support
909 for the ``line`` argument will raise a DeprecationWarning.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000972- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
973 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
974 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
975 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
976 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
977 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
978 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
979 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
980 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
981 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
982 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
983 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
984 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
985 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
986 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
987 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
988 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
989 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
990 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
991 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
992
993 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
994 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
995 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
996 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
997 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
998 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
999 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1000 access to the underlying socket used.
1001
1002 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1003 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1004 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001005
1006 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001007 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001008 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
1009 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
1010
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001011 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
1012 suite to run in parallel without issue.

1290
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001291- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1292 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1293 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1294 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1295 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1296 module is:
1297 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1298
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001299- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1300 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1301 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1302 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1303 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1304 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1305
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001306- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1307 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1308 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1309 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1310 PyObject_Format().
1311
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001312- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1313 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1314 state.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +00001315
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001316- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also

1324 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
1325 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001326
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001327- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a

1343 returns pi_t.
Christian Heimes951cc0f2008-01-31 23:08:23 +00001344
