10*Release date: XX-XXX-2008*
11
12Core and Builtins
13-----------------
14
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +000015- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with
16 a unicode argument.
17
Benjamin Peterson17f03ca2008-09-01 14:18:30 +000018- Issue #3683: Fix compilation when --without-threads is given.
19
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +000020- Issue #3668: Fix a memory leak with the "s*" argument parser in
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +000021 PyArg_ParseTuple and friends, which occurred when the argument for "s*"
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +000022 was correctly parsed but parsing of subsequent arguments failed.
23
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +000024- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +000025 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
26 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
27 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
28 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
29 type object.
30
Neal Norwitz18aa3882008-08-24 05:04:52 +000031- Fix crashes on memory allocation failure found with failmalloc.

43 function 'stringlib_contains_obj'.
44
Benjamin Peterson712ee922008-08-24 18:10:20 +000045- Added warnings on the use of ``__getslice__``, ``__setslice__``, or
46 ``__delslice__``.
47
Gregory P. Smith2bb25cc2008-09-02 05:29:51 +000048- Issue #3678: Correctly pass LDFLAGS and LDLAST to the linker on shared
49 library targets in the Makefile.
50
Gregory P. Smith980b99b2008-09-07 05:15:18 +000051- Issue #1204: The configure script now tests for additional libraries
52 that may be required when linking against readline. This fixes issues
53 with x86_64 builds on some platforms (a few Linux flavors and OpenBSD).
54
Benjamin Peterson14cb6bc2008-08-26 17:08:40 +000055C-API
56-----
57

66
67- Issue #3776: Deprecate the bsddb package for removal in 3.0.
Brett Cannon32476fc2008-09-05 18:33:51 +000068
Hirokazu Yamamoto42e459e2008-09-04 14:25:30 +000069- Issue #3762: platform.architecture() fails if python is lanched via
70 its symbolic link.

87 warnings.catch_warnings() along with some API cleanup. Expanding the tests
88 for catch_warnings() also led to an improvement in the raising of a
89 DeprecationWarning related to warnings.warn_explicit().
90
Benjamin Peterson973e6c22008-09-01 23:12:58 +000091- The deprecation warnings for the old camelCase threading API were removed.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000138
139Core and Builtins
140-----------------
141
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000142- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
143 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
144 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
145 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
146 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
147 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
148 default.
149
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000150- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
151 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
152
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000153- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
154 value again.
155
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000156- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
157 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
158 and introducing s*.
159
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000160- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
161 object was stored in the freelist.
162
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000163- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
164 ValueError consistently across platforms.
165
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000166- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
167 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
168 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
169
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000170- Apply security patches from Apple.
171
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000172- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
173 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
174
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000175- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
176 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
177
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000178- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
179 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
180 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
181
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000182- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
183 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
184 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
185 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
186 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
187 failed have been fixed.
188
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000189Library
190-------
191
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +0000192- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
193
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000194- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
195 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
196
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000197- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
198 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
199 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
200
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000201- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
202 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
203 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
204 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
205 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
206 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
207
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000208- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
209 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
210
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +0000211- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
212
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +0000213- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.
214
Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +0000215- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.
216
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +0000217- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
218 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
219
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +0000220- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
221 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
222
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +0000223- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
224 in a redirect.
225
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000226- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in
Brett Cannon721b1452008-08-16 22:00:27 +0000227 BaseHTTPServer, cgi (and rfc822), httplib.
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000228
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +0000229- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash
230 after a 302 response in the case of not going through a proxy.
231
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +0000232- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
233 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
234 regular expression.
235
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +0000236- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now
237 thread-safe.
238
Brett Cannonbf3157b2008-08-14 05:00:03 +0000239- Silence the DeprecationWarning of rfc822 when it is imported by mimetools
240 since mimetools itself is deprecated. Because modules are cached, all
241 subsequent imports of rfc822 will not raise a visible DeprecationWarning.
242
Antoine Pitrou9fcd4b32008-08-11 17:21:36 +0000243- Issue #3134: shutil referenced undefined WindowsError symbol.
244
Robert Schuppenies14646332008-08-10 11:01:53 +0000245- Issue #1342811: Fix leak in Tkinter.Menu.delete. Commands associated to
246 menu entries were not deleted.
247
Brett Cannon83e81842008-08-09 23:30:55 +0000248- Copied the implementation of reduce() to _functools.reduce() to have a
249 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
250
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +0000251- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise
252 a MemoryError rather than silently stop the iteration.
253
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +0000254- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"
255 to _sre.compile() will now be rejected. This should not affect anybody
256 since the re.compile() function never generates invalid re-bytecode.
257
Skip Montanaroa032bf42008-08-08 22:52:51 +0000258- Issue #3436: Make csv.DictReader's fieldnames attribute a property so that
259 upon first access it can be automatically initialized from the csv file if
260 it wasn't initialized during instantiation.
261
Brett Cannon3aa2a492008-08-06 22:28:09 +0000262- Issue #2338: Create imp.reload() to help with transitioning to Python 3.0 as
263 the reload() built-in has been removed.
264

Brett Cannonc1b76e42008-08-09 23:06:16 +0000266 while running under the ``-3`` flag: aifc, asynchat, asyncore, bdb, bsddb,
Brett Cannon047e4a92008-08-17 04:16:04 +0000267 ConfigParser, cookielib, csv, difflib, distutils, DocXMLRPCServer, email,
268 filecmp, fileinput, inspect, logging, modulefinder, pdb, pickle, profile,

270 subprocess, sqlite3, tarfile, Tkinter, test.test_support, textwrap,
271 threading, tokenize, traceback, urlparse, wsgiref, xml, xmlrpclib.
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +0000272
Lars Gustäbel727bd0b2008-08-02 11:26:39 +0000273- Issue #3039: Fix tarfile.TarFileCompat.writestr() which always
274 raised an AttributeError.
275

Antoine Pitroude781a42008-08-09 12:43:23 +0000277 asking for a specific length. This problem only affected files opened
278 using the new "io" module, not the built-in open() function.
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +0000279

321
Nick Coghlan2a0c2b12008-08-04 12:47:17 +0000322- Issue #643841: The language reference now provides more detailed
323 coverage of the lookup process for special methods. The disclaimers
324 regarding lack of coverage of new-style classes have also been
325 removed, since the coverage is now fairly reasonable.

Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +0000333Core and Builtins
334-----------------
335
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000336- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
337 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
338 an integer using operator.index().
339
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000340- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
341 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
342
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000343- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
344 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
345
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000346- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
347 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
348 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
349
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000350- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
351 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
352 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
353 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
354 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
355 level.
356
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000357- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
358 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
359 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
360 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
361 all imports from that module to fail.
362
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000363- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
364 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
365 new-style classes.
366
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000367- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
368 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
369 another file in sys.stdout.
370
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000371- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
372 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
373 another thread's dictionary.
374
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000375- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
376 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
377 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
378 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
379 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
380 10, -1).
381
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000382- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
383 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
384 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000385
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000386- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
387 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into
388 ClearFreeList apis and calls them via gc.collect().

395 error when they failed.
396

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000422- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
423 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000424 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000425 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never

443
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000444- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000896- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
897 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
898 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
899 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
900 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
901 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
902 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support
903 for the ``line`` argument will raise a DeprecationWarning.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000966- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
967 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
968 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
969 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
970 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
971 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
972 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
973 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
974 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
975 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
976 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
977 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
978 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
979 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
980 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
981 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
982 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
983 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
984 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
985 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
986
987 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
988 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
989 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
990 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
991 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
992 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
993 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
994 access to the underlying socket used.
995
996 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
997 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
998 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000999
1000 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:

Christian Heimes5224d282008-02-23 15:01:05 +00001281
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001282- Issue #1881: An internal parser limit has been increased. Also see
Facundo Batistafc2d0102008-02-23 12:01:13 +00001283 issue 215555 for a discussion.
1284
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001285- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1286 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1287 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1288 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1289 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1290 module is:
1291 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1292
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001293- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1294 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1295 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1296 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1297 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1298 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1299
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001300- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1301 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1302 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1303 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1304 PyObject_Format().
1305
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001306- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1307 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1308 state.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +00001309
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001310- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001311 prevent a possible crash: an Abstract Base Class would try to access
1312 a slot on a registered virtual subclass.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001317- Clear all free lists during a gc.collect() of the highest generation
1318 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
1319 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001320
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001321- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a
1322 subclass of collections.defaultdict, if its default_factory is set
1323 to a bound method.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcb01aa432008-02-08 00:56:02 +00001324
Christian Heimesf75dbef2008-02-08 00:11:31 +00001325- Fixed a minor memory leak in dictobject.c. The content of the free
1326 list was not freed on interpreter shutdown.
1327
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001328- Limit free list of method and builtin function objects to 256

1336 calls. Python expected the return type int but the fork familie
1337 returns pi_t.
Christian Heimes951cc0f2008-01-31 23:08:23 +00001338
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001339- Issue #1678380: Fix a bug that identifies 0j and -0j when they

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001351- Patch #1473257: generator objects gain a gi_code attribute. This is
1352 the same object as the func_code attribute of the function that
1353 produced the generator.
Georg Brandl0cdf9a32008-01-26 14:14:20 +00001354
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001355- Issue #1920: "while 0" statements were completely removed by the
1356 compiler, even in the presence of an "else" clause, which is
1357 supposed to be run when the condition is false. Now the compiler
1358 correctly emits bytecode for the "else" suite.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00002625 time so that opening a database previously created with the DB_DUP
2626 or DB_DUPSORT flag set will keep the proper behavior on subsequent
2627 opens. Specifically: dictionary assignment to a DB object will
2628 replace all values for a given key when the database allows
2629 duplicate values. DB users should use DB.put(k, v) when they want
2630 to store duplicates; not DB[k] = v.
