12Core and Builtins
13-----------------
14
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +000015- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with
16 a unicode argument.

Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +000020- Issue #3668: Fix a memory leak with the "s*" argument parser in
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +000021 PyArg_ParseTuple and friends, which occurred when the argument for "s*"
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +000022 was correctly parsed but parsing of subsequent arguments failed.
23
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +000024- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +000025 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
26 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
27 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
28 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
29 type object.
30

43 function 'stringlib_contains_obj'.
44
Benjamin Peterson712ee922008-08-24 18:10:20 +000045- Added warnings on the use of ``__getslice__``, ``__setslice__``, or
46 ``__delslice__``.
47
Gregory P. Smith2bb25cc2008-09-02 05:29:51 +000048- Issue #3678: Correctly pass LDFLAGS and LDLAST to the linker on shared

128
Barry Warsaw07a4a382008-08-21 01:15:08 +0000129*Release date: 20-Aug-2008*
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000130
131Core and Builtins
132-----------------
133
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000134- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
135 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
136 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
137 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
138 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
139 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
140 default.
141
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000142- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
143 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
144
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000145- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
146 value again.
147
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000148- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
149 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
150 and introducing s*.
151
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000152- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
153 object was stored in the freelist.
154
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000155- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
156 ValueError consistently across platforms.
157
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000158- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
159 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
160 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
161
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000162- Apply security patches from Apple.
163
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000164- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
165 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
166
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000167- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
168 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
169
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000170- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
171 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
172 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
173
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000174- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
175 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
176 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
177 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
178 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
179 failed have been fixed.
180
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000181Library
182-------
183
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +0000184- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
185
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000186- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
187 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
188
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000189- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
190 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
191 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
192
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000193- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
194 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
195 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
196 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
197 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
198 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
199
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000200- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
201 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
202
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +0000203- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
204
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +0000205- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.
206
Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +0000207- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.
208
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +0000209- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
210 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
211
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +0000212- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
213 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
214
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +0000215- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
216 in a redirect.
217
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000218- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in
Brett Cannon721b1452008-08-16 22:00:27 +0000219 BaseHTTPServer, cgi (and rfc822), httplib.
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000220
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +0000221- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash
222 after a 302 response in the case of not going through a proxy.
223
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +0000224- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
225 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
226 regular expression.
227
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +0000228- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now
229 thread-safe.
230
Brett Cannonbf3157b2008-08-14 05:00:03 +0000231- Silence the DeprecationWarning of rfc822 when it is imported by mimetools
232 since mimetools itself is deprecated. Because modules are cached, all
233 subsequent imports of rfc822 will not raise a visible DeprecationWarning.
234
Antoine Pitrou9fcd4b32008-08-11 17:21:36 +0000235- Issue #3134: shutil referenced undefined WindowsError symbol.
236
Robert Schuppenies14646332008-08-10 11:01:53 +0000237- Issue #1342811: Fix leak in Tkinter.Menu.delete. Commands associated to
238 menu entries were not deleted.
239
Brett Cannon83e81842008-08-09 23:30:55 +0000240- Copied the implementation of reduce() to _functools.reduce() to have a
241 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
242
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +0000243- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise
244 a MemoryError rather than silently stop the iteration.
245
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +0000246- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"
247 to _sre.compile() will now be rejected. This should not affect anybody
248 since the re.compile() function never generates invalid re-bytecode.
249
Skip Montanaroa032bf42008-08-08 22:52:51 +0000250- Issue #3436: Make csv.DictReader's fieldnames attribute a property so that
251 upon first access it can be automatically initialized from the csv file if
252 it wasn't initialized during instantiation.
253
Brett Cannon3aa2a492008-08-06 22:28:09 +0000254- Issue #2338: Create imp.reload() to help with transitioning to Python 3.0 as
255 the reload() built-in has been removed.
256
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +0000257- Changed code in the following modules/packages to remove warnings raised
Brett Cannonc1b76e42008-08-09 23:06:16 +0000258 while running under the ``-3`` flag: aifc, asynchat, asyncore, bdb, bsddb,
Brett Cannon047e4a92008-08-17 04:16:04 +0000259 ConfigParser, cookielib, csv, difflib, distutils, DocXMLRPCServer, email,

263 threading, tokenize, traceback, urlparse, wsgiref, xml, xmlrpclib.
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +0000264
Lars Gustäbel727bd0b2008-08-02 11:26:39 +0000265- Issue #3039: Fix tarfile.TarFileCompat.writestr() which always
266 raised an AttributeError.
267

Antoine Pitroude781a42008-08-09 12:43:23 +0000269 asking for a specific length. This problem only affected files opened
270 using the new "io" module, not the built-in open() function.
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +0000271

294
Antoine Pitrou5fdfa3e2008-07-25 19:42:26 +0000295- Issue #3394: zipfile.writestr sets external attributes when passed a

Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +0000325Core and Builtins
326-----------------
327
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000328- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
329 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
330 an integer using operator.index().
331
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000332- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
333 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
334
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000335- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
336 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
337
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000338- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
339 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
340 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
341
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000342- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
343 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
344 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
345 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
346 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
347 level.
348
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000349- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
350 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
351 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
352 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
353 all imports from that module to fail.
354
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000355- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
356 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
357 new-style classes.
358
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000359- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
360 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
361 another file in sys.stdout.
362
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000363- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
364 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
365 another thread's dictionary.
366
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000367- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
368 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
369 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
370 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
371 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
372 10, -1).
373
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000374- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
375 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
376 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000377
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000378- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
379 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into
380 ClearFreeList apis and calls them via gc.collect().
Gregory P. Smith2fe77062008-07-06 03:35:58 +0000381
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000382Library
383-------
384
Thomas Heller57adf222008-08-14 19:10:48 +0000385- Issue #3554: ctypes.string_at and ctypes.wstring_at did call Python
386 api functions without holding the GIL, which could lead to a fatal
387 error when they failed.
388
Martin v. Löwisaabf4042008-08-02 07:20:25 +0000389- Issue #799428: Fix Tkinter.Misc._nametowidget to unwrap Tcl command objects.

396
Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +0000397- Issue #3125: Remove copy_reg in multiprocessing and replace it with
398 ForkingPickler.register() to resolve conflict with ctypes.
399
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000400- Issue #3090: Fixed ARCHFLAGS parsing on OS/X

Thomas Heller880f5292008-07-15 19:39:38 +0000402- Issue #3313: Fixed a crash when a failed dlopen() call does not set

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000414- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
415 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000416 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000417 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
418 merged into trunk.

Nick Coghlanc060b0e2008-07-02 13:09:19 +0000433- Issue #3190: Pydoc now hides the automatic module attribute __package__ (the
434 handling is now the same as that of other special attributes like __name__).
435
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000436- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for

447 redundant ":443" port number designation when the connection is using the
448 default https port (443).

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000888- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
889 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
890 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
891 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
892 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
893 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000958- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
959 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
960 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
961 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
962 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
963 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
964 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
965 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
966 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
967 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
968 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
969 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
970 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
971 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
972 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
973 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
974 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
975 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
976 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
977 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
978
979 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
980 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
981 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
982 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
983 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
984 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
985 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
986 access to the underlying socket used.
987
988 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
989 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
990 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000991
992 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000993 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,

995 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
996
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000997 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
998 suite to run in parallel without issue.

Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001274- Issue #1881: An internal parser limit has been increased. Also see
Facundo Batistafc2d0102008-02-23 12:01:13 +00001275 issue 215555 for a discussion.
1276
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001277- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1278 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1279 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1280 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1281 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1282 module is:
1283 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1284
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001285- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1286 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1287 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1288 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1289 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1290 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1291
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001292- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1293 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1294 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1295 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1296 PyObject_Format().
1297
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001298- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1299 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1300 state.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +00001301
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001302- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001309- Clear all free lists during a gc.collect() of the highest generation
1310 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
1311 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001312
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001313- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a
1314 subclass of collections.defaultdict, if its default_factory is set
1315 to a bound method.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcb01aa432008-02-08 00:56:02 +00001316
Christian Heimesf75dbef2008-02-08 00:11:31 +00001317- Fixed a minor memory leak in dictobject.c. The content of the free
1318 list was not freed on interpreter shutdown.
1319

1328 calls. Python expected the return type int but the fork familie
1329 returns pi_t.
Christian Heimes951cc0f2008-01-31 23:08:23 +00001330
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001331- Issue #1678380: Fix a bug that identifies 0j and -0j when they

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001343- Patch #1473257: generator objects gain a gi_code attribute. This is
1344 the same object as the func_code attribute of the function that
1345 produced the generator.
Georg Brandl0cdf9a32008-01-26 14:14:20 +00001346
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001347- Issue #1920: "while 0" statements were completely removed by the
1348 compiler, even in the presence of an "else" clause, which is
1349 supposed to be run when the condition is false. Now the compiler
1350 correctly emits bytecode for the "else" suite.
