24- Issue #3850: recursion tests in Misc/find_recursion_limit.py can raise
25 AttributeError instead of RuntimeError, depending in which C API call
26 exactly the recursion limit is exceeded. Consequently, both exception types
27 are caught and silenced.

41Core and Builtins
42-----------------
43
Martin v. Löwis9fa5a282008-09-11 06:53:30 +000044- Issue #3642: Suppress warning in obmalloc when size_t is larger than uint.
45
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc05e34492008-09-10 22:04:45 +000046- Issue #3743: In a few places, PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T was incorrectly used with
47 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro
48 PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T is designed to select the correct format for the OS
49 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent
50 implementation and uses "%zd" on all platforms for size_t values.
51 This makes a difference on win64, where ``printf`` needs "%Id" to display
52 64bit values.
53
Benjamin Peterson97179b02008-09-09 20:55:01 +000054- Issue #3634: _weakref.ref(Exception).__init__() gave invalid return value on
55 error.
56
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcd3ffb892008-09-09 07:24:30 +000057- Issue #3777: long() applied to a float object now always return a long
58 object; previously an int would be returned for small values. the __long__
59 method is allowed to return either an int or a long, but the behaviour of
60 float objects should not change to respect backward compatibility.
61
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +000062- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with
63 a unicode argument.
64
Benjamin Peterson17f03ca2008-09-01 14:18:30 +000065- Issue #3683: Fix compilation when --without-threads is given.
66
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +000067- Issue #3668: Fix a memory leak with the "s*" argument parser in
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +000068 PyArg_ParseTuple and friends, which occurred when the argument for "s*"
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +000069 was correctly parsed but parsing of subsequent arguments failed.
70
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +000071- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +000072 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
73 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
74 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
75 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
76 type object.
77
Neal Norwitz18aa3882008-08-24 05:04:52 +000078- Fix crashes on memory allocation failure found with failmalloc.
79
80- Fix memory leaks found with valgrind and update suppressions file.
81
82- Fix compiler warnings in opt mode which would lead to invalid memory reads.
83
84- Fix problem using wrong name in decimal module reported by pychecker.
85
Christian Heimes7d4c3172008-08-22 19:47:25 +000086- Silenced another compiler warning about a used but not defined
87 function 'stringlib_contains_obj'.
88
Benjamin Peterson712ee922008-08-24 18:10:20 +000089- Added warnings on the use of ``__getslice__``, ``__setslice__``, or
90 ``__delslice__``.
91
Gregory P. Smith2bb25cc2008-09-02 05:29:51 +000092- Issue #3678: Correctly pass LDFLAGS and LDLAST to the linker on shared
93 library targets in the Makefile.
94
Gregory P. Smith980b99b2008-09-07 05:15:18 +000095- Issue #1204: The configure script now tests for additional libraries
96 that may be required when linking against readline. This fixes issues
97 with x86_64 builds on some platforms (a few Linux flavors and OpenBSD).
98

108 stack usage in the case of deeply nested objects.
109
Guido van Rossume3c4fd92008-09-10 14:27:00 +0000110- Issue #3629: Fix sre "bytecode" validator for an end case.

113
Nick Coghland2e09382008-09-11 12:11:06 +0000114- Issue #3781: Further warnings.catch_warnings() cleanup to prevent
115 silent misbehaviour when a single instance is nested in multiple
116 with statements, or when the methods are invoked in the wrong order.
117
Vinay Sajip844f7412008-09-09 13:42:08 +0000118- Issue #3809: Fixed spurious 'test.blah' file left behind by test_logging.

147 warnings.catch_warnings() along with some API cleanup. Expanding the tests
148 for catch_warnings() also led to an improvement in the raising of a
149 DeprecationWarning related to warnings.warn_explicit().
150
Benjamin Peterson973e6c22008-09-01 23:12:58 +0000151- The deprecation warnings for the old camelCase threading API were removed.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000212What's New in Python 2.6 beta 3?
213================================
214
Barry Warsaw07a4a382008-08-21 01:15:08 +0000215*Release date: 20-Aug-2008*
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000216
217Core and Builtins
218-----------------
219
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000220- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
221 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
222 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
223 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
224 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
225 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
226 default.
227
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000228- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
229 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
230
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000231- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
232 value again.
233
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000234- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
235 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
236 and introducing s*.
237
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000238- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
239 object was stored in the freelist.
240
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000241- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
242 ValueError consistently across platforms.
243
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000244- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
245 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
246 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
247
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000248- Apply security patches from Apple.
249
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000250- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
251 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
252
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000253- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
254 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
255
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000256- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
257 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
258 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
259
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000260- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
261 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
262 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
263 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
264 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
265 failed have been fixed.
266
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000267Library
268-------
269
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +0000270- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
271
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000272- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
273 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
274
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000275- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
276 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
277 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
278
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000279- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
280 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
281 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
282 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
283 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
284 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
285
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000286- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
287 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
288
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +0000289- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
290
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +0000291- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.
292
Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +0000293- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.
294
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +0000295- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
296 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
297
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +0000298- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
299 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
300
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +0000301- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
302 in a redirect.
303
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000304- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in
Brett Cannon721b1452008-08-16 22:00:27 +0000305 BaseHTTPServer, cgi (and rfc822), httplib.
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000306
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +0000307- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash
308 after a 302 response in the case of not going through a proxy.
309
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +0000310- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
311 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
312 regular expression.

413
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000414- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
415 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
416 an integer using operator.index().
417
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000418- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
419 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
420
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000421- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
422 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
423
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000424- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
425 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
426 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
427
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000428- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
429 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
430 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
431 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
432 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
433 level.
434
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000435- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
436 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
437 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
438 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
439 all imports from that module to fail.
440
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000441- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
442 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
443 new-style classes.
444
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000445- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is

447 another file in sys.stdout.
448
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000449- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from

451 another thread's dictionary.
452
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000453- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
454 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
455 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
456 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
457 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
458 10, -1).
459
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000460- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
461 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
462 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000500- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
501 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000502 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000503 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000974- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
975 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
976 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
977 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
978 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
979 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
980 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support

1042-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001043
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001044- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1045 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1046 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1047 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1048 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1049 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1050 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1051 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1052 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1053 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1054 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1055 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1056 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1057 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1058 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1059 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1060 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1061 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1062 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1063 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1064
1065 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1066 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1067 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1068 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1069 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1070 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1071 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1072 access to the underlying socket used.
1073
1074 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1075 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1076 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001077
1078 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001079 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,

1081 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
1082
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001083 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
1084 suite to run in parallel without issue.

1362
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001363- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1364 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1365 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1366 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1367 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1368 module is:
1369 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1370
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001371- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1372 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1373 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1374 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1375 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1376 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1377
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001378- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1379 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1380 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and

1382 PyObject_Format().
1383
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001384- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1385 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1386 state.

1396 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
1397 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001398
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001399- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a

1415 returns pi_t.
Christian Heimes951cc0f2008-01-31 23:08:23 +00001416

Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +00001617- Bug #1683368: The object.__init__() and object.__new__() methods are
1618 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when
1619 either allows excess arguments is when it is not overridden and the
1620 other one is. For backwards compatibility, when both are
1621 overridden, it is a deprecation warning (for now; maybe a Py3k
Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +00001622 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
1623 as supported by type.__new__().
Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +00001624
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001625- Patch #1675423: PyComplex_AsCComplex() now tries to convert an
1626 object to complex using its __complex__() method before falling back
1627 to the __float__() method. Therefore, the functions in the cmath
1628 module now can operate on objects that define a __complex__()
1629 method.

Collin Wintere38051d2007-03-09 20:33:07 +00001664
Georg Brandlaa2321b2007-03-07 00:40:28 +00001665- Patch #703779: unset __file__ in __main__ after running a file. This
