8================================
9
10Core and Builtins
11-----------------
12
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +000013- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
14 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
15 an integer using operator.index().
16
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +000017- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
18 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
19
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +000020- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
21 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
22
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +000023- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
24 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
25 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
26
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +000027- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
28 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
29 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
30 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
31 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
32 level.
33
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +000034- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
35 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
36 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
37 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
38 all imports from that module to fail.
39
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +000040- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
41 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
42 new-style classes.
43
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +000044- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
45 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
46 another file in sys.stdout.
47
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +000048- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
49 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
50 another thread's dictionary.
51
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +000052- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
53 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
54 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
55 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
56 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
57 10, -1).
58
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +000059- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments, f(a=2, a=23),
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +000060 would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression from 2.4 caused by the
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +000061 switch to the new compiler.
62
Gregory P. Smith2fe77062008-07-06 03:35:58 +000063- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with other
64 freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into ClearFreeList apis and
65 calls them via gc.collect().
66
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +000067Library
68-------
69
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +000070- Issue #3389: Allow resolving dotted names for handlers in logging
71 configuration files.
72
Brett Cannon1e8fba72008-07-18 19:30:22 +000073- Deprecate the sunaudio module for removal in Python 3.0.
74

82 ForkingPickler.register() to resolve conflict with ctypes.
83

Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +000085
Thomas Heller880f5292008-07-15 19:39:38 +000086- Issue #3313: Fixed a crash when a failed dlopen() call does not set
87 a valid dlerror() message.
88

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +000098- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
99 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000100 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000101 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
102 merged into trunk.

109
110- Issue #1746: Correct handling of zipfile archive comments (previously

118 handling is now the same as that of other special attributes like __name__).
119
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000120- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for

Gregory P. Smith3b1e6b22008-07-07 04:31:58 +0000127 properly when raising an exception due to the bz2file being closed.
128 Prevents a deadlock.

131 redundant ":443" port number designation when the connection is using the
132 default https port (443).
133

135 up in the child process to prevent deadlock and report proper thread counts
136 if the new process uses the threading module.
137

174
Brett Cannondea1b562008-06-27 00:31:13 +0000175- Issue #3211: warnings.warn_explicit() did not guard against its 'registry'
176 argument being anything other than a dict or None. Also fixed a bug in error
177 handling when 'message' and 'category' were both set to None, triggering a
178 bus error.
179
Amaury Forgeot d'Arca8919fe2008-06-16 19:12:42 +0000180- Issue #3100: Corrected a crash on deallocation of a subclassed weakref which

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000570- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
571 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
572 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
573 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
574 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
575 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
576 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support
577 for the ``line`` argument will raise a DeprecationWarning.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000640- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
641 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
642 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
643 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
644 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
645 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
646 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
647 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
648 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
649 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
650 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
651 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
652 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
653 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
654 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
655 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
656 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
657 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
658 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
659 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
660
661 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
662 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
663 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
664 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
665 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
666 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
667 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
668 access to the underlying socket used.
669
670 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
671 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
672 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000673
674 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000675 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000676 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
677 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
678
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000679 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
680 suite to run in parallel without issue.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc9a0d3462008-03-23 09:55:29 +0000734- Issue #1477: With narrow Unicode builds, the unicode escape sequence
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000735 \Uxxxxxxxx did not accept values outside the Basic Multilingual
736 Plane. This affected raw unicode literals and the
737 'raw-unicode-escape' codec. Now UTF-16 surrogates are generated in
738 this case, like normal unicode literals and the 'unicode-escape'
739 codec.

958
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +0000959- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
960 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
961 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
962 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
963 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
964 module is:
965 from future_builtins import hex, oct
966
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +0000967- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
968 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
969 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
970 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
971 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
972 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
973
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +0000974- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
975 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
976 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
977 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
978 PyObject_Format().
979
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000980- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
981 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
982 state.

993 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +0000994
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000995- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a
