8================================
9
10Core and Builtins
11-----------------
12
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +000013- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
14 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
15 an integer using operator.index().
16
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +000017- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
18 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
19
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +000020- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
21 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
22
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +000023- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
24 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
25 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
26
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +000027- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
28 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
29 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
30 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
31 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
32 level.
33
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +000034- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
35 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
36 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
37 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
38 all imports from that module to fail.
39
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +000040- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
41 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
42 new-style classes.
43
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +000044- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
45 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
46 another file in sys.stdout.
47
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +000048- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
49 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
50 another thread's dictionary.
51
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +000052- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
53 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
54 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
55 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
56 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
57 10, -1).
58
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +000059- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments, f(a=2, a=23),
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +000060 would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression from 2.4 caused by the
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +000061 switch to the new compiler.
62
Gregory P. Smith2fe77062008-07-06 03:35:58 +000063- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with other
64 freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into ClearFreeList apis and
65 calls them via gc.collect().
66
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +000067Library
68-------
69
Georg Brandl6b41a8e2008-07-19 12:39:10 +000070- Issue #3302: Fix several crashes when calling locale's gettext functions
71 with None arguments.
72
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +000073- Issue #3389: Allow resolving dotted names for handlers in logging
74 configuration files.
75
Brett Cannon1e8fba72008-07-18 19:30:22 +000076- Deprecate the sunaudio module for removal in Python 3.0.
77

83
Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +000084- Issue #3125: Remove copy_reg in multiprocessing and replace it with
85 ForkingPickler.register() to resolve conflict with ctypes.
86
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +000087- Issue #3090: Fixed ARCHFLAGS parsing on OS/X

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000101- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
102 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000103 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000104 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
105 merged into trunk.

Nick Coghlanc060b0e2008-07-02 13:09:19 +0000120- Issue #3190: Pydoc now hides the automatic module attribute __package__ (the
121 handling is now the same as that of other special attributes like __name__).
122
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000123- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for

134 redundant ":443" port number designation when the connection is using the
135 default https port (443).
136
Gregory P. Smithdb3409c2008-07-17 03:13:05 +0000137- Issue #874900: after an os.fork() call the threading module state is cleaned
138 up in the child process to prevent deadlock and report proper thread counts
139 if the new process uses the threading module.

179 argument being anything other than a dict or None. Also fixed a bug in error
180 handling when 'message' and 'category' were both set to None, triggering a
181 bus error.
182

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000573- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
574 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
575 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
576 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
577 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
578 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
579 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000643- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
644 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
645 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
646 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
647 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
648 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
649 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
650 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
651 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
652 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
653 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
654 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
655 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
656 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
657 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
658 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
659 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
660 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
661 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
662 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
663
664 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
665 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
666 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
667 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
668 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
669 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
670 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
671 access to the underlying socket used.
672
673 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
674 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
675 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000676
677 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000678 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000679 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
680 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
681
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000682 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
683 suite to run in parallel without issue.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc9a0d3462008-03-23 09:55:29 +0000737- Issue #1477: With narrow Unicode builds, the unicode escape sequence
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000738 \Uxxxxxxxx did not accept values outside the Basic Multilingual
739 Plane. This affected raw unicode literals and the
740 'raw-unicode-escape' codec. Now UTF-16 surrogates are generated in
741 this case, like normal unicode literals and the 'unicode-escape'

961
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +0000962- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
963 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
964 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
965 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
966 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
967 module is:
968 from future_builtins import hex, oct
969
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +0000970- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
971 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
972 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
973 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
974 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
975 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
976
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +0000977- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
978 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
979 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
980 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
981 PyObject_Format().
982
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000983- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
984 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
985 state.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +0000986
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000987- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also

995 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
996 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +0000997
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000998- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a
999 subclass of collections.defaultdict, if its default_factory is set
1000 to a bound method.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcb01aa432008-02-08 00:56:02 +00001001
Christian Heimesf75dbef2008-02-08 00:11:31 +00001002- Fixed a minor memory leak in dictobject.c. The content of the free
1003 list was not freed on interpreter shutdown.
1004
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001005- Limit free list of method and builtin function objects to 256

1013 calls. Python expected the return type int but the fork familie
1014 returns pi_t.
Christian Heimes951cc0f2008-01-31 23:08:23 +00001015
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001016- Issue #1678380: Fix a bug that identifies 0j and -0j when they
