Amaury Forgeot d'Arc05e34492008-09-10 22:04:45 +0000428- Issue #3743: In a few places, PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T was incorrectly used with
429 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro
430 PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T is designed to select the correct format for the OS
431 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent
432 implementation and uses "%zd" on all platforms for size_t values.
433 This makes a difference on win64, where ``printf`` needs "%Id" to display
434 64bit values.

Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +0000454 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__

599Core and Builtins
600-----------------
601
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000602- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
603 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
604 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
605 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
606 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
607 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
608 default.
609
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000610- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
611 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
612
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000613- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
614 value again.
615
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000616- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
617 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
618 and introducing s*.
619
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000620- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
621 object was stored in the freelist.
622
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000623- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
624 ValueError consistently across platforms.
625
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000626- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
627 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
628 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
629
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000630- Apply security patches from Apple.
631
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000632- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that

637
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000638- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
639 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
640 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
641
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000642- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
643 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
644 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
645 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
646 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
647 failed have been fixed.

656
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000657- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
658 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
659 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
660
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000661- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
662 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
663 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
664 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in

792
Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +0000793Core and Builtins
794-----------------
795
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000796- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
797 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
798 an integer using operator.index().
799
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000800- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
801 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
802
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000803- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
804 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
805
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000806- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
807 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
808 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
809
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000810- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
811 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
812 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
813 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
814 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
815 level.
816
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000817- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
818 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
819 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
820 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
821 all imports from that module to fail.
822
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000823- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
824 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
825 new-style classes.
826
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000827- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
828 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
829 another file in sys.stdout.
830
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000831- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
832 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
833 another thread's dictionary.
834
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000835- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
836 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
837 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
838 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
839 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
840 10, -1).
841
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000842- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
843 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
844 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000845
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000846- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
847 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into
848 ClearFreeList apis and calls them via gc.collect().

855 error when they failed.
856
Martin v. Löwisaabf4042008-08-02 07:20:25 +0000857- Issue #799428: Fix Tkinter.Misc._nametowidget to unwrap Tcl command objects.

867
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000868- Issue #3090: Fixed ARCHFLAGS parsing on OS/X

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000882- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
883 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000884 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000885 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
886 merged into trunk.
887
Georg Brandle78fbcc2008-07-05 10:13:36 +0000888- Issue #2663: add filtering capability to shutil.copytree().

Nick Coghlanc060b0e2008-07-02 13:09:19 +0000901- Issue #3190: Pydoc now hides the automatic module attribute __package__ (the
902 handling is now the same as that of other special attributes like __name__).
903
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000904- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001426- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1427 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1428 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1429 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1430 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1431 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1432 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1433 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1434 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1435 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1436 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1437 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1438 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1439 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1440 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1441 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1442 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1443 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1444 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1445 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1446
1447 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1448 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1449 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1450 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1451 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1452 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1453 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1454 access to the underlying socket used.
1455
1456 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1457 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1458 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001459
1460 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:

1744
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001745- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1746 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1747 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1748 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1749 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1750 module is:
1751 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1752
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001753- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1754 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1755 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1756 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1757 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1758 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1759
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001760- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1761 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1762 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1763 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1764 PyObject_Format().
1765

Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +00001999- Bug #1683368: The object.__init__() and object.__new__() methods are
2000 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when
2001 either allows excess arguments is when it is not overridden and the
2002 other one is. For backwards compatibility, when both are
2003 overridden, it is a deprecation warning (for now; maybe a Py3k
Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +00002004 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
2005 as supported by type.__new__().

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00002007- Patch #1675423: PyComplex_AsCComplex() now tries to convert an
2008 object to complex using its __complex__() method before falling back
2009 to the __float__() method. Therefore, the functions in the cmath
2010 module now can operate on objects that define a __complex__()
2011 method.
