Barry Warsawba437742008-04-04 01:34:41 +000027
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc96865852008-04-22 21:14:41 +000028- Issue #2670: Fix a failure in urllib2.build_opener(), when passed two
29 handlers that derive the same default base class.
30
Christian Heimese74c8f22008-04-19 02:23:57 +000031- Added kill, terminate and send_signal(sig) to subprocess.Popen.

34 module.
35
36- Four new methods were added to the math and cmath modules:
37 acosh, asinh, atanh and log1p.
38
Gregory P. Smith671c5d92008-04-09 18:18:43 +000039- zlib.decompressobj().flush(value) no longer crashes the interpreter when
40 passed a value less than or equal to zero.
41
Brett Cannone9746892008-04-12 23:44:07 +000042- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the original Python
43 code has been kept as backup). This will allow for using the 'warning's
44 machinery in such places as the parser where use of pure Python code is not
Brett Cannonb457dda2008-05-02 02:25:09 +000045 possible. Both the ``showarning()`` and ``formatwarning()`` gain an
46 optional 'line' argument which is not called by default for
Brett Cannon8a232cc2008-05-05 05:32:07 +000047 backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting ``warnings.showwarning()`` to
48 an implementation that lacks support for the ``line`` argument will raise a
49 DeprecationWarning.
Brett Cannone9746892008-04-12 23:44:07 +000050

72
Gregory P. Smithd59fefb2008-04-22 08:11:33 +000073- The getpass module has been improved on Unix. It now uses /dev/tty
74 by default and uses stderr instead of stdout. A GetPassWarning is
75 issued when input echo cannot be controlled.
Gregory P. Smith41e30182008-04-21 21:31:08 +000076
Skip Montanarob131f042008-04-18 20:35:46 +000077- Issue #2014: Allow XML-RPC datetime objects to have dates before

91 extension modules between 32 and 64 bit platforms. See the distutls
92 build documentation for more information.
93
Gregory P. Smithaa63d0d2008-04-06 23:11:17 +000094- Issue #815646: Individual file objects may now be used from multiple
95 threads at once without fear of crashing the Python interpreter. If
96 file.close() is called while an object is in use by another thread
97 an IOError exception will be raised and the file will not be closed.
98
Thomas Hellerf7906482008-04-04 19:43:25 +000099- The bundled libffi copy is now in sync with the recently released
100 libffi3.0.5 version, apart from some small changes to
101 Modules/_ctypes/libffi/configure.ac.
102
Fred Drake46c58c12008-04-04 05:41:30 +0000103- Issue #2385: distutils.core.run_script() makes __file__ available, so the
104 controlled environment will more closely mirror the typical script
105 environment. This supports setup.py scripts that refer to data files.
106
Barry Warsawba437742008-04-04 01:34:41 +0000107Tests
108-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000109- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining ports
110 to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an effort to
111 facilitate running multiple instances of the entire regression test suite
112 in parallel without issue. test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such
113 that it will always return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case
114 with the previous implementation, especially if socket options had been
115 set that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
116 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception if it
117 is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the SO_REUSEADDR or
118 SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if available, bind_port()
119 will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on the socket it's been passed.
120 This currently only applies to Windows. This option prevents any other
121 sockets from binding to the host/port we've bound to, thus removing the
122 possibility of the 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it,
123 that occurs when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a
124 host/port that's already been bound by another socket. The optional
125 preferred port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
126 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
127
128 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will pass
129 a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an unused port.
130 The temporary socket object is then closed and deleted, and the port is
131 returned. This method should only be used for obtaining an unused port
132 in order to pass to an external program (i.e. the -accept [port] argument
133 to openssl's s_server mode) or as a parameter to a server-oriented class
134 that doesn't give you direct access to the underlying socket used.
135
136 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used for
137 the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and connect).
138
139 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
140 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
141 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
142 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
143
144 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test suite to
145 run in parallel without issue.

153 gcc is used as compiler.
154
Ronald Oussoren580c7fe2008-05-02 19:45:11 +0000155- Issue #2573: On MacOS X it is now possible to install the framework
156 with a different name using --with-framework-name=NAME.

163 platforms which provide the functions through their libm. The
164 files also contains several helpers and constants for math.
165
Benjamin Petersona692c4d2008-04-27 02:28:02 +0000166- Added a new convenience function, PyErr_WarnPy3k, for issuing Py3k

Barry Warsaw52973612008-03-01 02:23:38 +0000400 644. The mode is now inherited from the py file.
Christian Heimes40346852008-02-23 17:52:07 +0000401
Georg Brandlad61bc82008-02-23 15:11:18 +0000402- Issue #2067: file.__exit__() now calls subclasses' close() method.
403
404- Patch #1759: Backport of PEP 3129 class decorators.
Christian Heimes5224d282008-02-23 15:01:05 +0000405

Facundo Batistafc2d0102008-02-23 12:01:13 +0000407 issue 215555 for a discussion.
408
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +0000409- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
410 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
411 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
412 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
413 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
414 module is:
415 from future_builtins import hex, oct
416
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +0000417- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
418 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
419 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
420 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
421 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
422 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
423
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +0000424- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
425 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
426 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
427 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
428 PyObject_Format().
429

439
Andrew M. Kuchlingc6511a82008-03-04 01:48:26 +0000440- Clear all free lists during a gc.collect() of the highest generation in order
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +0000441 to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back memory to the
442 OS earlier.

446
Christian Heimesf75dbef2008-02-08 00:11:31 +0000447- Fixed a minor memory leak in dictobject.c. The content of the free
448 list was not freed on interpreter shutdown.
449
Christian Heimes6075a822008-02-06 12:44:34 +0000450- Limit free list of method and builtin function objects to 256 entries

471
Georg Brandl0cdf9a32008-01-26 14:14:20 +0000472- Patch #1473257: generator objects gain a gi_code attribute. This is the
473 same object as the func_code attribute of the function that produced the
474 generator.
475
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc31eaafe2008-01-24 22:59:25 +0000476- Issue #1920: "while 0" statements were completely removed by the compiler,
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000477 even in the presence of an "else" clause, which is supposed to be run when
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc31eaafe2008-01-24 22:59:25 +0000478 the condition is false. Now the compiler correctly emits bytecode for the

2008-----
2009
Christian Heimes5b970ad2008-02-06 13:33:44 +00002010- Unified naming convention for free lists and their limits. All free lists
2011 in Object/ are named ``free_list``, the counter ``numfree`` and the upper
2012 limit is a macro ``PyName_MAXFREELIST`` inside an #ifndef block.
2013
Amaury Forgeot d'Arccab3d982008-02-03 22:51:43 +00002014- ``PySet_Add()`` can now modify a newly created frozenset. Similarly to
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00002015 ``PyTuple_SetItem``, it can be used to populate a brand new frozenset; but
Amaury Forgeot d'Arccab3d982008-02-03 22:51:43 +00002016 it does not steal a reference to the added item.
2017
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00002018- Added ``PySet_Check()`` and ``PyFrozenSet_Check()`` to the set API.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arccab3d982008-02-03 22:51:43 +00002019
Georg Brandl6caad7d2008-01-26 14:19:22 +00002020- Backport of PyUnicode_FromString(), _FromStringAndSize(), _Format and
2021 _FormatV from Python 3.0. Made PyLong_AsSsize_t and PyLong_FromSsize_t
2022 public functions.
2023
2024- Patch #1720595: add T_BOOL to the range of structmember types.
2025
2026- Issue #1534: Added ``PyFloat_GetMax()``, ``PyFloat_GetMin()`` and
2027 ``PyFloat_GetInfo()`` to the float API.
2028
2029- Issue #1521: On 64bit platforms, using PyArgs_ParseTuple with the t# of w#
2030 format code incorrectly truncated the length to an int, even when
2031 PY_SSIZE_T_CLEAN is set. The str.decode method used to return incorrect
2032 results with huge strings.
2033
2034- Issue #1629: Renamed Py_Size, Py_Type and Py_Refcnt to Py_SIZE, Py_TYPE
2035 and Py_REFCNT.
2036
2037- PEP 3123: Provide forward compatibility with Python 3.0, while keeping
2038 backwards compatibility. Add Py_Refcnt, Py_Type, Py_Size, and
2039 PyVarObject_HEAD_INIT.
2040
2041- Py_ssize_t fields work in structmember when HAVE_LONG_LONG is not defined.
2042
2043- Patch #1733960: Allow T_LONGLONG to accept ints.
2044
2045- T_PYSSIZET can now be used in PyMemberDef lists for Py_ssize_t members.
2046

2050
2051- Fix some leftovers from the conversion from int to Py_ssize_t
2052 (relevant to strings and sequences of more than 2**31 items).
2053
2054- Make _PyGILState_NoteThreadState() static, it was not used anywhere
2055 outside of pystate.c and should not be necessary.
2056
Christian Heimes000a0742008-01-03 22:16:32 +00002057- ``PyImport_Import`` and ``PyImport_ImportModule`` now always do absolute
2058 imports. In earlier versions they might have used relative imports under
2059 some conditions.
2060
Andrew M. Kuchlingadc60ab2008-01-04 02:26:00 +00002061- Added case insensitive comparison methods ``PyOS_stricmp(char*, char*)``
Christian Heimes000a0742008-01-03 22:16:32 +00002062 and ``PyOS_strnicmp(char*, char*, Py_ssize_t)``.

2087
Brett Cannon5e263512007-05-20 23:17:38 +00002088- Removed the macfs module. It had been deprecated since Python 2.5. This
2089 lead to the deprecation of macostools.touched() as it relied solely on macfs
2090 and was a no-op under OS X.
