10*Release date: XX-XXX-2008*
11
12Core and Builtins
13-----------------
14
Martin v. Löwis9fa5a282008-09-11 06:53:30 +000015- Issue #3642: Suppress warning in obmalloc when size_t is larger than uint.
16
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc05e34492008-09-10 22:04:45 +000017- Issue #3743: In a few places, PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T was incorrectly used with
18 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro
19 PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T is designed to select the correct format for the OS
20 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent
21 implementation and uses "%zd" on all platforms for size_t values.
22 This makes a difference on win64, where ``printf`` needs "%Id" to display
23 64bit values.
24
Benjamin Peterson97179b02008-09-09 20:55:01 +000025- Issue #3634: _weakref.ref(Exception).__init__() gave invalid return value on
26 error.
27
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcd3ffb892008-09-09 07:24:30 +000028- Issue #3777: long() applied to a float object now always return a long
29 object; previously an int would be returned for small values. the __long__
30 method is allowed to return either an int or a long, but the behaviour of
31 float objects should not change to respect backward compatibility.
32
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +000033- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with
34 a unicode argument.
35
Benjamin Peterson17f03ca2008-09-01 14:18:30 +000036- Issue #3683: Fix compilation when --without-threads is given.
37
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +000038- Issue #3668: Fix a memory leak with the "s*" argument parser in
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +000039 PyArg_ParseTuple and friends, which occurred when the argument for "s*"
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +000040 was correctly parsed but parsing of subsequent arguments failed.
41
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +000042- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +000043 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
44 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
45 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
46 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
47 type object.
48
Neal Norwitz18aa3882008-08-24 05:04:52 +000049- Fix crashes on memory allocation failure found with failmalloc.
50
51- Fix memory leaks found with valgrind and update suppressions file.
52
53- Fix compiler warnings in opt mode which would lead to invalid memory reads.
54
55- Fix problem using wrong name in decimal module reported by pychecker.
56
Christian Heimes7d4c3172008-08-22 19:47:25 +000057- Silenced another compiler warning about a used but not defined
58 function 'stringlib_contains_obj'.
59
Benjamin Peterson712ee922008-08-24 18:10:20 +000060- Added warnings on the use of ``__getslice__``, ``__setslice__``, or
61 ``__delslice__``.
62
Gregory P. Smith2bb25cc2008-09-02 05:29:51 +000063- Issue #3678: Correctly pass LDFLAGS and LDLAST to the linker on shared
64 library targets in the Makefile.
65
Gregory P. Smith980b99b2008-09-07 05:15:18 +000066- Issue #1204: The configure script now tests for additional libraries
67 that may be required when linking against readline. This fixes issues
68 with x86_64 builds on some platforms (a few Linux flavors and OpenBSD).
69
Benjamin Peterson14cb6bc2008-08-26 17:08:40 +000070C-API

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc24cb3822008-09-11 20:56:13 +000078- Issue #3640: Pickling a list or a dict uses less local variables, to reduce
79 stack usage in the case of deeply nested objects.
80
Guido van Rossume3c4fd92008-09-10 14:27:00 +000081- Issue #3629: Fix sre "bytecode" validator for an end case.

84
Nick Coghland2e09382008-09-11 12:11:06 +000085- Issue #3781: Further warnings.catch_warnings() cleanup to prevent
86 silent misbehaviour when a single instance is nested in multiple
87 with statements, or when the methods are invoked in the wrong order.
88
Vinay Sajip844f7412008-09-09 13:42:08 +000089- Issue #3809: Fixed spurious 'test.blah' file left behind by test_logging.

118 warnings.catch_warnings() along with some API cleanup. Expanding the tests
119 for catch_warnings() also led to an improvement in the raising of a
120 DeprecationWarning related to warnings.warn_explicit().
121
Benjamin Peterson973e6c22008-09-01 23:12:58 +0000122- The deprecation warnings for the old camelCase threading API were removed.

Barry Warsaw07a4a382008-08-21 01:15:08 +0000180*Release date: 20-Aug-2008*
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000181
182Core and Builtins
183-----------------
184
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000185- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
186 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
187 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
188 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
189 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
190 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
191 default.
192
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000193- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
194 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
195
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000196- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
197 value again.
198
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000199- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
200 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
201 and introducing s*.
202
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000203- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
204 object was stored in the freelist.
205
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000206- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
207 ValueError consistently across platforms.
208
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000209- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
210 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
211 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
212
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000213- Apply security patches from Apple.
214
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000215- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
216 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
217
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000218- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
219 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
220
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000221- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
222 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
223 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
224
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000225- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
226 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
227 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
228 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
229 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
230 failed have been fixed.
231
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000232Library
233-------
234
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +0000235- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
236
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000237- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
238 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
239
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000240- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
241 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
242 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
243
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000244- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
245 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
246 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
247 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
248 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
249 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
250
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000251- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
252 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
253
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +0000254- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
255
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +0000256- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.
257
Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +0000258- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.
259
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +0000260- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
261 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
262
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +0000263- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
264 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
265
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +0000266- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
267 in a redirect.
268
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000269- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in
Brett Cannon721b1452008-08-16 22:00:27 +0000270 BaseHTTPServer, cgi (and rfc822), httplib.
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000271
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +0000272- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash
273 after a 302 response in the case of not going through a proxy.
274
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +0000275- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
276 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
277 regular expression.
278
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +0000279- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now
280 thread-safe.
281
Brett Cannonbf3157b2008-08-14 05:00:03 +0000282- Silence the DeprecationWarning of rfc822 when it is imported by mimetools
283 since mimetools itself is deprecated. Because modules are cached, all
284 subsequent imports of rfc822 will not raise a visible DeprecationWarning.
285
Antoine Pitrou9fcd4b32008-08-11 17:21:36 +0000286- Issue #3134: shutil referenced undefined WindowsError symbol.
287
Robert Schuppenies14646332008-08-10 11:01:53 +0000288- Issue #1342811: Fix leak in Tkinter.Menu.delete. Commands associated to
289 menu entries were not deleted.
290
Brett Cannon83e81842008-08-09 23:30:55 +0000291- Copied the implementation of reduce() to _functools.reduce() to have a
292 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
293
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +0000294- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise
295 a MemoryError rather than silently stop the iteration.
296
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +0000297- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"
298 to _sre.compile() will now be rejected. This should not affect anybody
299 since the re.compile() function never generates invalid re-bytecode.
300
Skip Montanaroa032bf42008-08-08 22:52:51 +0000301- Issue #3436: Make csv.DictReader's fieldnames attribute a property so that
302 upon first access it can be automatically initialized from the csv file if
303 it wasn't initialized during instantiation.
304
Brett Cannon3aa2a492008-08-06 22:28:09 +0000305- Issue #2338: Create imp.reload() to help with transitioning to Python 3.0 as
306 the reload() built-in has been removed.

Antoine Pitrou5fdfa3e2008-07-25 19:42:26 +0000346- Issue #3394: zipfile.writestr sets external attributes when passed a
347 file name rather than a ZipInfo instance, so files are extracted with
348 mode 0600 rather than 000 under Unix.

377-----------------
378
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000379- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
380 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
381 an integer using operator.index().
382
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000383- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
384 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
385
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000386- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
387 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
388
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000389- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
390 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
391 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
392
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000393- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
394 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
395 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
396 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
397 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
398 level.
399
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000400- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
401 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
402 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
403 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
404 all imports from that module to fail.
405
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000406- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
407 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
408 new-style classes.
409
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000410- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
411 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
412 another file in sys.stdout.
413
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000414- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
415 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
416 another thread's dictionary.
417
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000418- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
419 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
420 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
421 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
422 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
423 10, -1).
424
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000425- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
426 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
427 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000428
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000429- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
430 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into

438 error when they failed.
439
Martin v. Löwisaabf4042008-08-02 07:20:25 +0000440- Issue #799428: Fix Tkinter.Misc._nametowidget to unwrap Tcl command objects.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000465- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
466 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000467 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000468 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never

486
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000487- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000939- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
940 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
941 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
942 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
943 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
944 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
945 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support
946 for the ``line`` argument will raise a DeprecationWarning.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001009- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1010 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1011 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1012 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1013 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1014 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1015 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1016 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1017 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1018 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1019 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1020 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1021 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1022 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1023 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1024 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1025 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1026 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1027 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1028 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1029
1030 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1031 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1032 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1033 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1034 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1035 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1036 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1037 access to the underlying socket used.
1038
1039 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1040 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1041 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001042
1043 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001044 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001045 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
1046 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
1047
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001048 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
1049 suite to run in parallel without issue.

Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001328- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1329 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be

1333 module is:
1334 from future_builtins import hex, oct

1338 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1339 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1340 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1341 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1342
