34 "offsetof(PyStringObject, ob_sval) + 1" when allocating memory for
35 str instances. On a typical machine this saves 3 bytes of memory
36 (on average) per string allocation.
37
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcdc619012008-11-22 20:01:18 +000038- Issue #3996: On Windows, the PyOS_CheckStack function would cause the

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc32265652008-11-20 23:34:31 +000049 method on file objects with closefd=False. The file descriptor is still
50 kept open but the file object behaves like a closed file. The ``FileIO``
51 object also got a new readonly attribute ``closefd``.
52
Benjamin Peterson46cc6d12008-11-19 21:49:09 +000053- Issue #4348: Some bytearray methods returned that didn't cause any change to

69 __future__ import didn't work.
70
Benjamin Peterson399b1fe2008-10-25 02:53:28 +000071- Using ``nonlocal`` as a variable name will now raise a Py3k SyntaxWarning
Georg Brandl7fb00ad2008-10-25 07:00:52 +000072 because it is a reserved word in 3.x.
Benjamin Peterson399b1fe2008-10-25 02:53:28 +000073

79 is temporarily replaced with an equivalent frozenset. But the eventual
80 KeyError would always report the empty frozenset([]) as the missing key. Now
81 it correctly refers to the initial element.
82
Antoine Pitrouae5bece2008-12-06 21:29:24 +000083- Issue #4509: Various issues surrounding resize of bytearray objects to

319 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent
320 implementation and uses "%zd" on all platforms for size_t values.
321 This makes a difference on win64, where ``printf`` needs "%Id" to display
322 64bit values.
323
Benjamin Peterson97179b02008-09-09 20:55:01 +0000324- Issue #3634: _weakref.ref(Exception).__init__() gave invalid return value on

326
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcd3ffb892008-09-09 07:24:30 +0000327- Issue #3777: long() applied to a float object now always return a long
328 object; previously an int would be returned for small values. the __long__
329 method is allowed to return either an int or a long, but the behaviour of
330 float objects should not change to respect backward compatibility.
331
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +0000332- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with

340
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000341- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +0000342 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
343 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
344 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
345 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
346 type object.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000486
487Core and Builtins
488-----------------
489
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000490- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
491 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
492 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
493 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
494 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
495 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
496 default.
497
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000498- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
499 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
500
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000501- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
502 value again.
503
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000504- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
505 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
506 and introducing s*.
507
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000508- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
509 object was stored in the freelist.
510
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000511- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
512 ValueError consistently across platforms.
513
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000514- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
515 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
516 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
517
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000518- Apply security patches from Apple.
519
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000520- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
521 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
522
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000523- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
524 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
525
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000526- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
527 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
528 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
529
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000530- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
531 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
532 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
533 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
534 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
535 failed have been fixed.
536
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000537Library
538-------
539
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +0000540- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
541
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000542- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
543 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
544
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000545- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
546 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
547 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
548
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000549- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
550 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
551 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
552 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
553 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
554 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
555
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000556- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
557 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
558
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +0000559- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
560
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +0000561- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.
562
Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +0000563- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.
564
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +0000565- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
566 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
567
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +0000568- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
569 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
570
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +0000571- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
572 in a redirect.
573
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000574- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in
Brett Cannon721b1452008-08-16 22:00:27 +0000575 BaseHTTPServer, cgi (and rfc822), httplib.
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000576
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +0000577- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash
578 after a 302 response in the case of not going through a proxy.
579
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +0000580- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
581 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
582 regular expression.
583
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +0000584- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now
585 thread-safe.
586
Brett Cannonbf3157b2008-08-14 05:00:03 +0000587- Silence the DeprecationWarning of rfc822 when it is imported by mimetools
588 since mimetools itself is deprecated. Because modules are cached, all
589 subsequent imports of rfc822 will not raise a visible DeprecationWarning.
590
Antoine Pitrou9fcd4b32008-08-11 17:21:36 +0000591- Issue #3134: shutil referenced undefined WindowsError symbol.
592
Robert Schuppenies14646332008-08-10 11:01:53 +0000593- Issue #1342811: Fix leak in Tkinter.Menu.delete. Commands associated to
594 menu entries were not deleted.
595
Brett Cannon83e81842008-08-09 23:30:55 +0000596- Copied the implementation of reduce() to _functools.reduce() to have a
597 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
598
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +0000599- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise
600 a MemoryError rather than silently stop the iteration.
601
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +0000602- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"
603 to _sre.compile() will now be rejected. This should not affect anybody
604 since the re.compile() function never generates invalid re-bytecode.
605
Skip Montanaroa032bf42008-08-08 22:52:51 +0000606- Issue #3436: Make csv.DictReader's fieldnames attribute a property so that
607 upon first access it can be automatically initialized from the csv file if
608 it wasn't initialized during instantiation.
609
Brett Cannon3aa2a492008-08-06 22:28:09 +0000610- Issue #2338: Create imp.reload() to help with transitioning to Python 3.0 as
611 the reload() built-in has been removed.
612
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +0000613- Changed code in the following modules/packages to remove warnings raised
Brett Cannonc1b76e42008-08-09 23:06:16 +0000614 while running under the ``-3`` flag: aifc, asynchat, asyncore, bdb, bsddb,

682-----------------
683
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000684- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
685 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
686 an integer using operator.index().
687
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000688- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
689 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
690
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000691- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
692 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
693
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000694- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
695 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
696 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
697
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000698- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
699 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
700 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
701 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
702 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
703 level.
704
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000705- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
706 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
707 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
708 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
709 all imports from that module to fail.
710
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000711- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
712 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
713 new-style classes.
714
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000715- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is

717 another file in sys.stdout.
718
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000719- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from

721 another thread's dictionary.
722
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000723- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
724 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
725 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
726 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
727 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
728 10, -1).
729
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000730- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
731 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
732 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000770- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
771 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000772 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000773 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001244- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
1245 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
1246 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
1247 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
1248 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
1249 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
1250 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support
1251 for the ``line`` argument will raise a DeprecationWarning.

1312-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001313
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001314- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1315 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1316 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1317 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1318 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1319 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1320 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1321 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1322 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1323 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1324 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1325 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1326 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1327 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1328 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1329 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1330 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1331 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1332 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1333 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1334
1335 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1336 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1337 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1338 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1339 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1340 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1341 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1342 access to the underlying socket used.
1343
1344 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1345 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1346 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001347
1348 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001349 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,

1351 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
1352
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001353 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
1354 suite to run in parallel without issue.

1632
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001633- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1634 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1635 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1636 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1637 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1638 module is:
1639 from future_builtins import hex, oct

Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001641- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1642 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1643 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1644 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1645 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1646 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1647
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001648- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001654- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1655 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1656 state.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +00001657

1666 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
1667 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001668
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001669- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a

Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +00001892 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
