22 method on file objects with closefd=False. The file descriptor is still
23 kept open but the file object behaves like a closed file. The ``FileIO``
24 object also got a new readonly attribute ``closefd``.
25
Georg Brandlfa71a902008-12-05 09:08:28 +000026- Issue #3689: The list reversed iterator now supports __length_hint__

47-----------------
48
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc74b458c2008-11-22 20:06:51 +000049- Issue #3996: On Windows, the PyOS_CheckStack function would cause the
50 interpreter to abort ("Fatal Python error: Could not reset the stack!")
51 instead of throwing a MemoryError.
52
Benjamin Peterson71ce9e72008-11-21 22:52:21 +000053- Issue #4367: Python would segfault during compiling when the unicodedata
54 module couldn't be imported and \N escapes were present.
55
Benjamin Peterson866eba92008-11-19 22:05:53 +000056- Issue #4348: Some bytearray methods returned that didn't cause any change to
57 the bytearray, returned the same bytearray instead of a copy.
58
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc83be3d22008-11-18 22:27:00 +000059- Issue #4317: Fixed a crash in the imageop.rgb2rgb8() function.

72 __future__ import didn't work.
73
Hirokazu Yamamoto2c66b7c2008-10-09 18:06:58 +000074- On windows, os.chdir given unicode was not working if GetCurrentDirectoryW
75 returned a path longer than MAX_PATH. (But It's doubtful this code path is
76 really executed because I cannot move to such directory on win2k)
77
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc00c94ed2008-10-07 20:40:09 +000078- Issue #4069: When set.remove(element) is used with a set element, the element
79 is temporarily replaced with an equivalent frozenset. But the eventual
80 KeyError would always report the empty frozenset([]) as the missing key. Now
81 it correctly refers to the initial element.
82
Christian Heimes4d8a6f42008-10-02 19:49:47 +000083- Fixed C99 style comments in several files. Python is now C89 compatible

246-----------------
247
Martin v. Löwis9fa5a282008-09-11 06:53:30 +0000248- Issue #3642: Suppress warning in obmalloc when size_t is larger than uint.
249
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc05e34492008-09-10 22:04:45 +0000250- Issue #3743: In a few places, PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T was incorrectly used with
251 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro
252 PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T is designed to select the correct format for the OS
253 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent
254 implementation and uses "%zd" on all platforms for size_t values.
255 This makes a difference on win64, where ``printf`` needs "%Id" to display
256 64bit values.
257
Benjamin Peterson97179b02008-09-09 20:55:01 +0000258- Issue #3634: _weakref.ref(Exception).__init__() gave invalid return value on
259 error.
260
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcd3ffb892008-09-09 07:24:30 +0000261- Issue #3777: long() applied to a float object now always return a long
262 object; previously an int would be returned for small values. the __long__
263 method is allowed to return either an int or a long, but the behaviour of
264 float objects should not change to respect backward compatibility.
265
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +0000266- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with
267 a unicode argument.
268
Benjamin Peterson17f03ca2008-09-01 14:18:30 +0000269- Issue #3683: Fix compilation when --without-threads is given.

Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000272 PyArg_ParseTuple and friends, which occurred when the argument for "s*"
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +0000273 was correctly parsed but parsing of subsequent arguments failed.
274
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000275- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +0000276 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
277 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
278 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
279 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
280 type object.
281
Neal Norwitz18aa3882008-08-24 05:04:52 +0000282- Fix crashes on memory allocation failure found with failmalloc.
283
284- Fix memory leaks found with valgrind and update suppressions file.
285
286- Fix compiler warnings in opt mode which would lead to invalid memory reads.
287
288- Fix problem using wrong name in decimal module reported by pychecker.
289
Christian Heimes7d4c3172008-08-22 19:47:25 +0000290- Silenced another compiler warning about a used but not defined
291 function 'stringlib_contains_obj'.
292
Benjamin Peterson712ee922008-08-24 18:10:20 +0000293- Added warnings on the use of ``__getslice__``, ``__setslice__``, or
294 ``__delslice__``.
295
Gregory P. Smith2bb25cc2008-09-02 05:29:51 +0000296- Issue #3678: Correctly pass LDFLAGS and LDLAST to the linker on shared

301 with x86_64 builds on some platforms (a few Linux flavors and OpenBSD).

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000420
421Core and Builtins
422-----------------
423
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000424- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
425 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
426 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
427 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
428 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
429 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
430 default.
431
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000432- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
433 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
434
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000435- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
436 value again.
437
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000438- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
439 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
440 and introducing s*.
441
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000442- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
443 object was stored in the freelist.
444
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000445- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
446 ValueError consistently across platforms.
447
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000448- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
449 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
450 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
451
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000452- Apply security patches from Apple.
453
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000454- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
455 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
456
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000457- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
458 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
459
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000460- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
461 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
462 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
463
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000464- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
465 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
466 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
467 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
468 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
469 failed have been fixed.
470
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000471Library
472-------
473
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +0000474- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
475
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000476- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
477 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
478
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000479- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
480 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
481 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
482
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000483- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
484 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
485 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
486 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
487 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
488 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
489
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000490- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
491 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
492
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +0000493- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
494
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +0000495- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.
496
Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +0000497- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.
498
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +0000499- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
500 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
501
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +0000502- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
503 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
504
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +0000505- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
506 in a redirect.
507
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000508- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in
Brett Cannon721b1452008-08-16 22:00:27 +0000509 BaseHTTPServer, cgi (and rfc822), httplib.
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000510
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +0000511- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash
512 after a 302 response in the case of not going through a proxy.
513
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +0000514- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
515 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
516 regular expression.
517
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +0000518- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now
519 thread-safe.
520
Brett Cannonbf3157b2008-08-14 05:00:03 +0000521- Silence the DeprecationWarning of rfc822 when it is imported by mimetools
522 since mimetools itself is deprecated. Because modules are cached, all
523 subsequent imports of rfc822 will not raise a visible DeprecationWarning.
524
Antoine Pitrou9fcd4b32008-08-11 17:21:36 +0000525- Issue #3134: shutil referenced undefined WindowsError symbol.
526
Robert Schuppenies14646332008-08-10 11:01:53 +0000527- Issue #1342811: Fix leak in Tkinter.Menu.delete. Commands associated to
528 menu entries were not deleted.
529
Brett Cannon83e81842008-08-09 23:30:55 +0000530- Copied the implementation of reduce() to _functools.reduce() to have a
531 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
532
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +0000533- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise
534 a MemoryError rather than silently stop the iteration.
535
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +0000536- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"
537 to _sre.compile() will now be rejected. This should not affect anybody
538 since the re.compile() function never generates invalid re-bytecode.
539
Skip Montanaroa032bf42008-08-08 22:52:51 +0000540- Issue #3436: Make csv.DictReader's fieldnames attribute a property so that
541 upon first access it can be automatically initialized from the csv file if
542 it wasn't initialized during instantiation.
543
Brett Cannon3aa2a492008-08-06 22:28:09 +0000544- Issue #2338: Create imp.reload() to help with transitioning to Python 3.0 as
545 the reload() built-in has been removed.
546

Lars Gustäbel727bd0b2008-08-02 11:26:39 +0000555- Issue #3039: Fix tarfile.TarFileCompat.writestr() which always
556 raised an AttributeError.
557

Antoine Pitroude781a42008-08-09 12:43:23 +0000559 asking for a specific length. This problem only affected files opened
560 using the new "io" module, not the built-in open() function.
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +0000561

584
Antoine Pitrou5fdfa3e2008-07-25 19:42:26 +0000585- Issue #3394: zipfile.writestr sets external attributes when passed a
586 file name rather than a ZipInfo instance, so files are extracted with
587 mode 0600 rather than 000 under Unix.
588
Gregory P. Smitha36f8fe2008-08-04 00:13:29 +0000589- Issue #1857: subprocess.Popen.poll gained an additional _deadstate keyword

Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000618- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
619 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
620 an integer using operator.index().
621
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000622- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which

624
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000625- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output

Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000628- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
629 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
630 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
631
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000632- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
633 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
634 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
635 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
636 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
637 level.
638
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000639- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
640 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
641 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
642 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
643 all imports from that module to fail.
644
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000645- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly

655 another thread's dictionary.
656
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000657- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
658 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
659 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
660 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
661 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
662 10, -1).

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001178- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
1179 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
1180 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
1181 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
1182 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
1183 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
1184 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support
1185 for the ``line`` argument will raise a DeprecationWarning.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001248- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1249 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1250 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1251 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1252 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1253 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1254 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1255 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1256 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1257 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1258 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1259 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1260 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1261 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1262 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1263 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1264 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1265 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1266 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1267 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1268
1269 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1270 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1271 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1272 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1273 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1274 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1275 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1276 access to the underlying socket used.
1277
1278 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1279 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1280 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001281
1282 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001283 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001284 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
1285 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
1286
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001287 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
1288 suite to run in parallel without issue.

1566
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001567- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1568 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1569 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1570 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1571 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1572 module is:
1573 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1574
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001575- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1576 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1577 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1578 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1579 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1580 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1581
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001582- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1583 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1584 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1585 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1586 PyObject_Format().
1587
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001588- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1589 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1590 state.

1601 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001602
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001603- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a

1619 returns pi_t.
Christian Heimes951cc0f2008-01-31 23:08:23 +00001620

1635 produced the generator.
Georg Brandl0cdf9a32008-01-26 14:14:20 +00001636
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001637- Issue #1920: "while 0" statements were completely removed by the
1638 compiler, even in the presence of an "else" clause, which is
1639 supposed to be run when the condition is false. Now the compiler
1640 correctly emits bytecode for the "else" suite.
