8================================
9
10*Release date: XX-Aug-2008*
11
12Core and Builtins
13-----------------
14
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +000015- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
16 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
17 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
18
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +000019- Apply security patches from Apple.
20
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +000021- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
22 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
23
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +000024- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
25 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
26
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +000027- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
28 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
29 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
30
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +000031- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
32 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
33 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
34 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
35 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
36 failed have been fixed.
37

39-------
40
Lars Gustäbel727bd0b2008-08-02 11:26:39 +000041- Issue #3039: Fix tarfile.TarFileCompat.writestr() which always
42 raised an AttributeError.
43
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +000044- Issue #2523: Fix quadratic behaviour when read()ing a binary file without
45 asking for a specific length.
46
Mark Dickinsonfe84cce2008-07-27 06:39:07 +000047- Issue #3449: Update decimal module to use most recent specification
48 (v. 1.68) and tests (v. 2.58) from IBM.
49
Skip Montanarof9ac43f2008-07-27 00:50:41 +000050- Issue 3437: Bug fix in robotparser parsing of Allow: lines.
51
Raymond Hettinger8c664e82008-07-25 18:43:33 +000052- Issue 1592: Improve error reporting when operations are attempted
53 on a closed shelf.
54
Georg Brandlf9efabb2008-07-23 15:16:45 +000055- Deprecate the "ast" parser function aliases.
56
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +000057- Issue #3120: On 64-bit Windows the subprocess module was truncating handles.
58
59- Issue #3303: Fix a crash in locale.strcoll() when calling it with
60 invalid arguments.
61
62- Issue #3302: Fix several crashes when calling locale's gettext functions
63 with None arguments.
64
65- Issue #3389: Allow resolving dotted names for handlers in logging
66 configuration files.
67
68- Deprecate the sunaudio module for removal in Python 3.0.
69
Antoine Pitrou5fdfa3e2008-07-25 19:42:26 +000070- Issue #3394: zipfile.writestr sets external attributes when passed a
71 file name rather than a ZipInfo instance, so files are extracted with
72 mode 0600 rather than 000 under Unix.
73
Martin v. Löwis8dbf3642008-08-01 14:10:26 +000074Build
75-----
76
77- Generate the PatternGrammar pickle during "make install".

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +000083*Release date: 17-Jul-2008*
84
Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +000085Core and Builtins
86-----------------
87
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +000088- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
89 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
90 an integer using operator.index().
91
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +000092- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
93 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
94
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +000095- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
96 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
97
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +000098- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
99 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
100 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
101
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000102- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
103 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
104 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
105 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
106 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
107 level.
108
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000109- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
110 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
111 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
112 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
113 all imports from that module to fail.
114
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000115- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
116 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
117 new-style classes.
118
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000119- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
120 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
121 another file in sys.stdout.
122
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000123- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
124 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
125 another thread's dictionary.
126
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000127- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
128 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
129 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
130 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
131 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
132 10, -1).
133
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000134- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
135 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
136 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000137
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000138- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
139 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into
140 ClearFreeList apis and calls them via gc.collect().
Gregory P. Smith2fe77062008-07-06 03:35:58 +0000141
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000142Library
143-------

146
Jesse Noller7fb96402008-07-17 21:01:05 +0000147- Issue #3395: fix reference in test_multiprocessing to old debugInfo method
148

Thomas Heller880f5292008-07-15 19:39:38 +0000158- Issue #3313: Fixed a crash when a failed dlopen() call does not set
159 a valid dlerror() message.
160
Thomas Heller2bad6572008-07-15 17:19:50 +0000161- Issue #3258: Fixed a crash when a ctypes POINTER type to an

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000170- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
171 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000172 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000173 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
174 merged into trunk.
175
Georg Brandle78fbcc2008-07-05 10:13:36 +0000176- Issue #2663: add filtering capability to shutil.copytree().

181
182- Issue #1746: Correct handling of zipfile archive comments (previously
183 archives with comments over 4k were flagged as invalid). Allow writing
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000184 Zip files with archives by setting the 'comment' attribute of a ZipFile.

Nick Coghlanc060b0e2008-07-02 13:09:19 +0000189- Issue #3190: Pydoc now hides the automatic module attribute __package__ (the
190 handling is now the same as that of other special attributes like __name__).
191
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000192- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for
193 removal in Python 3.0 in favor of urllib2.urlopen().

Gregory P. Smith3b1e6b22008-07-07 04:31:58 +0000199 properly when raising an exception due to the bz2file being closed.
200 Prevents a deadlock.

203 redundant ":443" port number designation when the connection is using the
204 default https port (443).
205
Gregory P. Smithdb3409c2008-07-17 03:13:05 +0000206- Issue #874900: after an os.fork() call the threading module state is cleaned
207 up in the child process to prevent deadlock and report proper thread counts
208 if the new process uses the threading module.
209
Nick Coghlan38469e22008-07-13 12:23:47 +0000210Tests

247 argument being anything other than a dict or None. Also fixed a bug in error
248 handling when 'message' and 'category' were both set to None, triggering a
249 bus error.
250
Amaury Forgeot d'Arca8919fe2008-06-16 19:12:42 +0000251- Issue #3100: Corrected a crash on deallocation of a subclassed weakref which

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000641- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
642 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
643 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
644 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
645 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
646 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
647 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support
648 for the ``line`` argument will raise a DeprecationWarning.

Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000710
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000711- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
712 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
713 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
714 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
715 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
716 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
717 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
718 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
719 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
720 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
721 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
722 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
723 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
724 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
725 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
726 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
727 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
728 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
729 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
730 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
731
732 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
733 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
734 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
735 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
736 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
737 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
738 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
739 access to the underlying socket used.
740
741 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
742 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
743 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000744
745 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000746 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000747 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
748 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
749
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000750 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
751 suite to run in parallel without issue.

Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001030- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1031 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be

1035 module is:
1036 from future_builtins import hex, oct

1040 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1041 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1042 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1043 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).

Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +00001284- Bug #1683368: The object.__init__() and object.__new__() methods are
1285 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when
1286 either allows excess arguments is when it is not overridden and the

Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +00001289 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
