Georg Brandl6425a2f2008-12-28 11:54:53 +000015- Issue #4759: None is now allowed as the first argument of

19 fail.
20
Antoine Pitrou73c0e652008-12-17 22:46:54 +000021- Issue #2467: gc.DEBUG_STATS reported invalid elapsed times. Also, always
22 print elapsed times, not only when some objects are uncollectable /

37 "offsetof(PyStringObject, ob_sval) + 1" when allocating memory for
38 str instances. On a typical machine this saves 3 bytes of memory
39 (on average) per string allocation.
40
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcdc619012008-11-22 20:01:18 +000041- Issue #3996: On Windows, the PyOS_CheckStack function would cause the
42 interpreter to abort ("Fatal Python error: Could not reset the stack!")
43 instead of throwing a MemoryError.

50
Vinay Sajip213faca2008-12-03 23:22:58 +000051- Issue #4233: Changed semantic of ``_fileio.FileIO``'s ``close()``
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc32265652008-11-20 23:34:31 +000052 method on file objects with closefd=False. The file descriptor is still
53 kept open but the file object behaves like a closed file. The ``FileIO``
54 object also got a new readonly attribute ``closefd``.
55
Benjamin Peterson46cc6d12008-11-19 21:49:09 +000056- Issue #4348: Some bytearray methods returned that didn't cause any change to

69 method does not return iterators for the 4th and 5th items.
70
Benjamin Petersonbdca9422008-10-26 20:21:13 +000071- Issue #4209: Enabling unicode_literals and the print_function in the same
72 __future__ import didn't work.
73
Benjamin Peterson399b1fe2008-10-25 02:53:28 +000074- Using ``nonlocal`` as a variable name will now raise a Py3k SyntaxWarning
Georg Brandl7fb00ad2008-10-25 07:00:52 +000075 because it is a reserved word in 3.x.
Benjamin Peterson399b1fe2008-10-25 02:53:28 +000076
Hirokazu Yamamoto10a018c2008-10-09 10:00:30 +000077- On windows, os.chdir given unicode was not working if GetCurrentDirectoryW
78 returned a path longer than MAX_PATH. (But It's doubtful this code path is
79 really executed because I cannot move to such directory on win2k)

82 is temporarily replaced with an equivalent frozenset. But the eventual
83 KeyError would always report the empty frozenset([]) as the missing key. Now
84 it correctly refers to the initial element.
85
Antoine Pitrouae5bece2008-12-06 21:29:24 +000086- Issue #4509: Various issues surrounding resize of bytearray objects to
87 which there are buffer exports.

316- Issue #3850: recursion tests in Misc/find_recursion_limit.py can raise
317 AttributeError instead of RuntimeError, depending in which C API call
318 exactly the recursion limit is exceeded. Consequently, both exception types
319 are caught and silenced.

333Core and Builtins
334-----------------
335
Martin v. Löwis9fa5a282008-09-11 06:53:30 +0000336- Issue #3642: Suppress warning in obmalloc when size_t is larger than uint.
337
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc05e34492008-09-10 22:04:45 +0000338- Issue #3743: In a few places, PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T was incorrectly used with
339 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro
340 PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T is designed to select the correct format for the OS
341 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent
342 implementation and uses "%zd" on all platforms for size_t values.
343 This makes a difference on win64, where ``printf`` needs "%Id" to display
344 64bit values.
345
Benjamin Peterson97179b02008-09-09 20:55:01 +0000346- Issue #3634: _weakref.ref(Exception).__init__() gave invalid return value on
347 error.
348
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcd3ffb892008-09-09 07:24:30 +0000349- Issue #3777: long() applied to a float object now always return a long
350 object; previously an int would be returned for small values. the __long__
351 method is allowed to return either an int or a long, but the behaviour of
352 float objects should not change to respect backward compatibility.
353
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +0000354- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with
355 a unicode argument.
356
Benjamin Peterson17f03ca2008-09-01 14:18:30 +0000357- Issue #3683: Fix compilation when --without-threads is given.
358
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +0000359- Issue #3668: Fix a memory leak with the "s*" argument parser in
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000360 PyArg_ParseTuple and friends, which occurred when the argument for "s*"
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +0000361 was correctly parsed but parsing of subsequent arguments failed.
362
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000363- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +0000364 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
365 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
366 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
367 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
368 type object.
369
Neal Norwitz18aa3882008-08-24 05:04:52 +0000370- Fix crashes on memory allocation failure found with failmalloc.
371
372- Fix memory leaks found with valgrind and update suppressions file.
373
374- Fix compiler warnings in opt mode which would lead to invalid memory reads.
375
376- Fix problem using wrong name in decimal module reported by pychecker.
377
Christian Heimes7d4c3172008-08-22 19:47:25 +0000378- Silenced another compiler warning about a used but not defined
379 function 'stringlib_contains_obj'.
380
Benjamin Peterson712ee922008-08-24 18:10:20 +0000381- Added warnings on the use of ``__getslice__``, ``__setslice__``, or
382 ``__delslice__``.
383
Gregory P. Smith2bb25cc2008-09-02 05:29:51 +0000384- Issue #3678: Correctly pass LDFLAGS and LDLAST to the linker on shared
385 library targets in the Makefile.
386
Gregory P. Smith980b99b2008-09-07 05:15:18 +0000387- Issue #1204: The configure script now tests for additional libraries
388 that may be required when linking against readline. This fixes issues
389 with x86_64 builds on some platforms (a few Linux flavors and OpenBSD).

405
Nick Coghland2e09382008-09-11 12:11:06 +0000406- Issue #3781: Further warnings.catch_warnings() cleanup to prevent
407 silent misbehaviour when a single instance is nested in multiple
408 with statements, or when the methods are invoked in the wrong order.
409

439 warnings.catch_warnings() along with some API cleanup. Expanding the tests
440 for catch_warnings() also led to an improvement in the raising of a
441 DeprecationWarning related to warnings.warn_explicit().
442
Benjamin Peterson973e6c22008-09-01 23:12:58 +0000443- The deprecation warnings for the old camelCase threading API were removed.

506
Barry Warsaw07a4a382008-08-21 01:15:08 +0000507*Release date: 20-Aug-2008*
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000508
509Core and Builtins
510-----------------
511
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000512- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
513 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
514 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
515 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
516 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
517 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
518 default.
519
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000520- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
521 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
522
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000523- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
524 value again.
525
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000526- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
527 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
528 and introducing s*.
529
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000530- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
531 object was stored in the freelist.
532
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000533- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
534 ValueError consistently across platforms.
535
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000536- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
537 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
538 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
539
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000540- Apply security patches from Apple.
541
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000542- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
543 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
544
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000545- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
546 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
547
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000548- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
549 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
550 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
551
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000552- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
553 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
554 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
555 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
556 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
557 failed have been fixed.
558
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000559Library
560-------
561
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +0000562- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
563
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000564- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
565 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
566
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000567- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
568 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
569 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
570
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000571- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
572 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
573 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
574 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
575 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
576 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
577
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000578- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
579 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
580
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +0000581- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
582
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +0000583- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.
584
Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +0000585- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.
586
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +0000587- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
588 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
589
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +0000590- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
591 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
592
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +0000593- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
594 in a redirect.
595
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000596- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in
Brett Cannon721b1452008-08-16 22:00:27 +0000597 BaseHTTPServer, cgi (and rfc822), httplib.
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000598
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +0000599- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash
600 after a 302 response in the case of not going through a proxy.
601
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +0000602- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
603 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
604 regular expression.
605
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +0000606- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now
607 thread-safe.
608
Brett Cannonbf3157b2008-08-14 05:00:03 +0000609- Silence the DeprecationWarning of rfc822 when it is imported by mimetools
610 since mimetools itself is deprecated. Because modules are cached, all
611 subsequent imports of rfc822 will not raise a visible DeprecationWarning.
612
Antoine Pitrou9fcd4b32008-08-11 17:21:36 +0000613- Issue #3134: shutil referenced undefined WindowsError symbol.

Robert Schuppenies14646332008-08-10 11:01:53 +0000615- Issue #1342811: Fix leak in Tkinter.Menu.delete. Commands associated to
616 menu entries were not deleted.
617
Brett Cannon83e81842008-08-09 23:30:55 +0000618- Copied the implementation of reduce() to _functools.reduce() to have a
619 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
620
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +0000621- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise

Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +0000703Core and Builtins
704-----------------
705
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000706- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
707 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
708 an integer using operator.index().
709
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000710- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
711 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
712
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000713- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
714 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
715
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000716- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
717 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
718 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
719
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000720- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
721 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
722 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
723 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
724 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
725 level.
726
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000727- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
728 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
729 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
730 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
731 all imports from that module to fail.
732
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000733- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
734 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
735 new-style classes.
736
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000737- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
738 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
739 another file in sys.stdout.
740
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000741- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
742 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
743 another thread's dictionary.
744
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000745- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
746 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
747 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
748 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
749 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
750 10, -1).
751
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000752- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
753 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
754 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000755
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000756- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
757 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000792- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
793 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000794 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000795 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
796 merged into trunk.

813

Georg Brandl5cc774e2008-06-11 20:28:06 +00001204 PPC64 and x86_64 support in one binary).
Ronald Oussoren5640ce22008-06-05 12:58:24 +00001205
1206 This is controlled by the configure argument ``--with-universal-archs``:
1207
1208 - ``--with-universal-archs=all``: install 4-way universal
1209
1210 - ``--with-universal-archs=32-bit``: install 2-way universal, 32-bit (the default)
1211
1212 - ``--with-universal-archs=64-bit``: install 2-way universal, 64-bit
1213
1214 This option should be used in combination with ``--enable-universalsdk=``.
1215
1216 NOTE: 64-bit and 4-way builds are only suppported on Mac OS X 10.5 (or later).

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001266- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
1267 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
1268 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
1269 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``

1271 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
1272 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support

1334-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001335
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001336- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1337 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1338 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1339 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1340 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1341 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1342 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1343 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1344 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1345 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1346 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1347 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1348 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1349 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1350 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1351 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1352 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1353 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1354 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1355 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1356
1357 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1358 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1359 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1360 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1361 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1362 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1363 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1364 access to the underlying socket used.
1365
1366 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1367 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1368 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001369
1370 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001371 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,

1373 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
1374
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001375 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
1376 suite to run in parallel without issue.

1654
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001655- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1656 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1657 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1658 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1659 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1660 module is:
1661 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1662
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001663- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1664 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1665 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1666 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1667 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1668 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1669
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001670- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1671 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1672 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and

1674 PyObject_Format().
1675
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001676- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1677 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1678 state.

1689 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001690
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001691- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a
