391
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc05e34492008-09-10 22:04:45 +0000392- Issue #3743: In a few places, PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T was incorrectly used with
393 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro
394 PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T is designed to select the correct format for the OS
395 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent
396 implementation and uses "%zd" on all platforms for size_t values.
397 This makes a difference on win64, where ``printf`` needs "%Id" to display
398 64bit values.
399
Benjamin Peterson97179b02008-09-09 20:55:01 +0000400- Issue #3634: _weakref.ref(Exception).__init__() gave invalid return value on

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000562
563Core and Builtins
564-----------------
565
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000566- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
567 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
568 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
569 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
570 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
571 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
572 default.
573
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000574- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
575 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
576
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000577- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
578 value again.
579
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000580- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
581 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
582 and introducing s*.
583
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000584- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
585 object was stored in the freelist.
586
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000587- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
588 ValueError consistently across platforms.
589
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000590- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
591 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
592 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
593
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000594- Apply security patches from Apple.
595
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000596- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
597 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
598
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000599- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
600 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
601
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000602- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
603 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
604 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
605
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000606- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
607 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
608 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
609 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
610 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
611 failed have been fixed.

614-------
615
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +0000616- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
617
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000618- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
619 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
620
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000621- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
622 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
623 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
624
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000625- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
626 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
627 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
628 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
629 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
630 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
631
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000632- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
633 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
634
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +0000635- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
636

758-----------------
759
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000760- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
761 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
762 an integer using operator.index().
763
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000764- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
765 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
766
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000767- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
768 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
769
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000770- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
771 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
772 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
773
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000774- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
775 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
776 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
777 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
778 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
779 level.
780
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000781- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
782 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
783 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
784 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
785 all imports from that module to fail.
786
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000787- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
788 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
789 new-style classes.
790
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000791- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is

793 another file in sys.stdout.
794
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000795- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from

797 another thread's dictionary.
798
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000799- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
800 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
801 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
802 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
803 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
804 10, -1).
805
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000806- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
807 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
808 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000846- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
847 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000848 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000849 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001320- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
1321 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
1322 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
1323 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001390- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1391 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1392 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1393 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1394 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1395 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1396 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1397 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1398 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1399 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1400 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1401 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1402 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1403 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1404 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1405 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1406 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1407 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1408 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1409 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1410
1411 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1412 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1413 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1414 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1415 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1416 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1417 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1418 access to the underlying socket used.
1419
1420 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1421 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1422 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001423
1424 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001425 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,

1428
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001429 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test

1708
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001709- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1710 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1711 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1712 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged

1714 module is:
1715 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1716
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001717- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1718 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1719 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1720 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1721 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1722 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1723
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001724- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1725 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001730- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1731 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
