Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000375- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
376 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
377 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
378 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
379 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
380 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
381 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support
382 for the ``line`` argument will raise a DeprecationWarning.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000424- Issue #2513: distutils on Windows is now capable of cross-compiling
Mark Hammond495cf992008-04-07 01:53:39 +0000425 extension modules between 32 and 64 bit platforms. See the distutls

427
Gregory P. Smithaa63d0d2008-04-06 23:11:17 +0000428- Issue #815646: Individual file objects may now be used from multiple

438 so the controlled environment will more closely mirror the typical
439 script environment. This supports setup.py scripts that refer to
440 data files.

Barry Warsawba437742008-04-04 01:34:41 +0000442Tests
443-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000444
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000445- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
446 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
447 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
448 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
449 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
450 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
451 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
452 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
453 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
454 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
455 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
456 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
457 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
458 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
459 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
460 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
461 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
462 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
463 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
464 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
465
466 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
467 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
468 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
469 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
470 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
471 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
472 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
473 access to the underlying socket used.
474
475 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
476 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
477 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000478
479 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000480 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000481 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
482 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
483
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000484 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
485 suite to run in parallel without issue.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc9a0d3462008-03-23 09:55:29 +0000539- Issue #1477: With narrow Unicode builds, the unicode escape sequence
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000540 \Uxxxxxxxx did not accept values outside the Basic Multilingual

763
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +0000764- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
765 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
766 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
767 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
768 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
769 module is:
770 from future_builtins import hex, oct
771
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +0000772- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
773 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
774 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
775 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
776 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
777 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
778
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +0000779- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
780 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a

783 PyObject_Format().
784
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000785- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
786 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
787 state.

Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000789- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also

797 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
798 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +0000799
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000800- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a
801 subclass of collections.defaultdict, if its default_factory is set
802 to a bound method.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcb01aa432008-02-08 00:56:02 +0000803

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000814- Issue #1983: Fixed return type of fork(), fork1() and forkpty()
815 calls. Python expected the return type int but the fork familie
816 returns pi_t.
Christian Heimes951cc0f2008-01-31 23:08:23 +0000817
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000818- Issue #1678380: Fix a bug that identifies 0j and -0j when they

831 the same object as the func_code attribute of the function that
832 produced the generator.
Georg Brandl0cdf9a32008-01-26 14:14:20 +0000833
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000834- Issue #1920: "while 0" statements were completely removed by the
835 compiler, even in the presence of an "else" clause, which is
