8================================
9
10*Release date: XX-Aug-2008*
11
12Core and Builtins
13-----------------
14
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +000015- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
16 ValueError consistently across platforms.
17
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +000018- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
19 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
20 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
21
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +000022- Apply security patches from Apple.
23
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +000024- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
25 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
26
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +000027- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
28 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
29
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +000030- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
31 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
32 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
33
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +000034- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
35 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
36 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
37 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
38 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
39 failed have been fixed.
40
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +000041Library
42-------
43
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +000044- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise
45 a MemoryError rather than silently stop the iteration.
46
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +000047- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"
48 to _sre.compile() will now be rejected. This should not affect anybody
49 since the re.compile() function never generates invalid re-bytecode.
50
Skip Montanaroa032bf42008-08-08 22:52:51 +000051- Issue #3436: Make csv.DictReader's fieldnames attribute a property so that
52 upon first access it can be automatically initialized from the csv file if
53 it wasn't initialized during instantiation.
54
Brett Cannon3aa2a492008-08-06 22:28:09 +000055- Issue #2338: Create imp.reload() to help with transitioning to Python 3.0 as
56 the reload() built-in has been removed.
57
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +000058- Changed code in the following modules/packages to remove warnings raised
59 while running under the ``-3`` flag: aifc, asyncore, bdb, bsddb,
60 ConfigParser, cookielib, DocXMLRPCServer, email, filecmp, fileinput, inspect,
61 logging, modulefinder, pdb, pickle, profile, pstats, pydoc, re, rlcompleter,
Brett Cannon3f92bc62008-08-08 04:27:28 +000062 SimpleXMLRPCServer, shelve, socket, subprocess, sqlite3, tarfile, Tkinter,
Brett Cannon03446c42008-08-08 04:19:32 +000063 test.test_support, textwrap, threading, tokenize, traceback, urlparse,
64 wsgiref, xml, xmlrpclib.
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +000065
Lars Gustäbel727bd0b2008-08-02 11:26:39 +000066- Issue #3039: Fix tarfile.TarFileCompat.writestr() which always
67 raised an AttributeError.
68
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +000069- Issue #2523: Fix quadratic behaviour when read()ing a binary file without
Antoine Pitroude781a42008-08-09 12:43:23 +000070 asking for a specific length. This problem only affected files opened
71 using the new "io" module, not the built-in open() function.
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +000072
Mark Dickinsonfe84cce2008-07-27 06:39:07 +000073- Issue #3449: Update decimal module to use most recent specification
74 (v. 1.68) and tests (v. 2.58) from IBM.
75
Skip Montanarof9ac43f2008-07-27 00:50:41 +000076- Issue 3437: Bug fix in robotparser parsing of Allow: lines.
77
Raymond Hettinger8c664e82008-07-25 18:43:33 +000078- Issue 1592: Improve error reporting when operations are attempted
79 on a closed shelf.
80
Georg Brandlf9efabb2008-07-23 15:16:45 +000081- Deprecate the "ast" parser function aliases.
82
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +000083- Issue #3120: On 64-bit Windows the subprocess module was truncating handles.
84
85- Issue #3303: Fix a crash in locale.strcoll() when calling it with
86 invalid arguments.
87
88- Issue #3302: Fix several crashes when calling locale's gettext functions
89 with None arguments.
90
91- Issue #3389: Allow resolving dotted names for handlers in logging
92 configuration files.
93
94- Deprecate the sunaudio module for removal in Python 3.0.
95
Antoine Pitrou5fdfa3e2008-07-25 19:42:26 +000096- Issue #3394: zipfile.writestr sets external attributes when passed a
97 file name rather than a ZipInfo instance, so files are extracted with
98 mode 0600 rather than 000 under Unix.
99
Gregory P. Smitha36f8fe2008-08-04 00:13:29 +0000100- Issue #1857: subprocess.Popen.poll gained an additional _deadstate keyword
101 argument in python 2.5, this broke code that subclassed Popen to include its
102 own poll method. Fixed my moving _deadstate to an _internal_poll method.
103
Martin v. Löwis8dbf3642008-08-01 14:10:26 +0000104Build
105-----
106
107- Generate the PatternGrammar pickle during "make install".
108
Nick Coghlan2a0c2b12008-08-04 12:47:17 +0000109Documentation
110-------------
111
112- Issue #643841: The language reference now provides more detailed
113 coverage of the lookup process for special methods. The disclaimers
114 regarding lack of coverage of new-style classes have also been
115 removed, since the coverage is now fairly reasonable.
116
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000117

119================================
120
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000121*Release date: 17-Jul-2008*
122
Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +0000123Core and Builtins
124-----------------
125
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000126- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
127 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
128 an integer using operator.index().
129
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000130- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
131 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
132
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000133- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
134 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
135
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000136- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
137 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
138 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
139
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000140- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
141 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
142 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
143 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
144 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
145 level.
146
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000147- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
148 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
149 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
150 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
151 all imports from that module to fail.
152
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000153- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
154 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
155 new-style classes.
156
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000157- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
158 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
159 another file in sys.stdout.
160
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000161- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
162 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
163 another thread's dictionary.
164
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000165- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
166 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
167 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
168 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
169 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
170 10, -1).
171
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000172- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
173 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
174 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000175
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000176- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
177 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into
178 ClearFreeList apis and calls them via gc.collect().
Gregory P. Smith2fe77062008-07-06 03:35:58 +0000179
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000180Library
181-------

184
Jesse Noller7fb96402008-07-17 21:01:05 +0000185- Issue #3395: fix reference in test_multiprocessing to old debugInfo method

Thomas Heller880f5292008-07-15 19:39:38 +0000196- Issue #3313: Fixed a crash when a failed dlopen() call does not set
197 a valid dlerror() message.
198
Thomas Heller2bad6572008-07-15 17:19:50 +0000199- Issue #3258: Fixed a crash when a ctypes POINTER type to an

Raymond Hettinger3cd1e422008-07-10 14:03:19 +0000207
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000208- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
209 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000210 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000211 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
212 merged into trunk.
213
Georg Brandle78fbcc2008-07-05 10:13:36 +0000214- Issue #2663: add filtering capability to shutil.copytree().

219
220- Issue #1746: Correct handling of zipfile archive comments (previously
221 archives with comments over 4k were flagged as invalid). Allow writing
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000222 Zip files with archives by setting the 'comment' attribute of a ZipFile.

Nick Coghlanc060b0e2008-07-02 13:09:19 +0000227- Issue #3190: Pydoc now hides the automatic module attribute __package__ (the
228 handling is now the same as that of other special attributes like __name__).
229
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000230- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for
231 removal in Python 3.0 in favor of urllib2.urlopen().

Gregory P. Smith3b1e6b22008-07-07 04:31:58 +0000237 properly when raising an exception due to the bz2file being closed.
238 Prevents a deadlock.
239
Gregory P. Smithc4691ec2008-07-07 05:09:12 +0000240- Issue #3094: httplib.HTTPSConnection Host: headers no longer include the
241 redundant ":443" port number designation when the connection is using the
242 default https port (443).
243
Gregory P. Smithdb3409c2008-07-17 03:13:05 +0000244- Issue #874900: after an os.fork() call the threading module state is cleaned
245 up in the child process to prevent deadlock and report proper thread counts
246 if the new process uses the threading module.
247

285 argument being anything other than a dict or None. Also fixed a bug in error
286 handling when 'message' and 'category' were both set to None, triggering a
287 bus error.
288
Amaury Forgeot d'Arca8919fe2008-06-16 19:12:42 +0000289- Issue #3100: Corrected a crash on deallocation of a subclassed weakref which

306 equals ``gen.gi_code.co_name``, like ``func.__name___`` that equals
307 ``func.func_code.co_name``. The repr() of a generator now also
308 contains this name.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000679- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
680 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
681 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
682 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
683 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
684 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
685 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support

747-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000748
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000749- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
750 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
751 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
752 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
753 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
754 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
755 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
756 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
757 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
758 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
759 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
760 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
761 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
762 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
763 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
764 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
765 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
766 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
767 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
768 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
769
770 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
771 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
772 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
773 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
774 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
775 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
776 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
777 access to the underlying socket used.
778
779 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
780 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
781 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000782
783 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000784 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000785 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
786 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
787
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000788 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
789 suite to run in parallel without issue.

1067
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001068- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1069 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1070 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1071 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1072 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1073 module is:
1074 from future_builtins import hex, oct

Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001076- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1077 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1078 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1079 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1080 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1081 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1082
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001083- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new

1087 PyObject_Format().
1088
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001089- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1090 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1091 state.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +00001092
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001093- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also

1101 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
1102 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001103
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001104- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a

1247 automatically shifts from ints to longs.
Raymond Hettinger8f669372007-10-03 21:18:11 +00001248
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001249- Issue #1686386: Tuple's tp_repr did not take into account the
1250 possibility of having a self-referential tuple, which is possible
1251 from C code. Nor did object's tp_str consider that a type's tp_str
1252 could do something that could lead to an inifinite recursion.

Brett Cannon1e534b52007-09-07 04:18:30 +00001269- Issue #1202533: Fix infinite recursion calls triggered by calls to
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001270 PyObject_Call() never calling back out to Python code to trigger
1271 recursion depth updates/checks. Required the creation of a static

Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +00001322- Bug #1683368: The object.__init__() and object.__new__() methods are
1323 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when
1324 either allows excess arguments is when it is not overridden and the
1325 other one is. For backwards compatibility, when both are
1326 overridden, it is a deprecation warning (for now; maybe a Py3k
Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +00001327 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
1328 as supported by type.__new__().
Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +00001329
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001330- Patch #1675423: PyComplex_AsCComplex() now tries to convert an
1331 object to complex using its __complex__() method before falling back
1332 to the __float__() method. Therefore, the functions in the cmath
1333 module now can operate on objects that define a __complex__()
1334 method.

1353 case, even when converting the value to a string failed.
1354
Georg Brandl871f1bc2007-03-12 13:17:36 +00001355- The dir() function has been extended to call the __dir__() method on
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001356 its argument, if it exists. If not, it will work like before. This
