18 object also got a new readonly attribute ``closefd``.
19
Georg Brandlfa71a902008-12-05 09:08:28 +000020- Issue #3689: The list reversed iterator now supports __length_hint__
21 instead of __len__. Behavior now matches other reversed iterators.

42
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc74b458c2008-11-22 20:06:51 +000043- Issue #3996: On Windows, the PyOS_CheckStack function would cause the
44 interpreter to abort ("Fatal Python error: Could not reset the stack!")
45 instead of throwing a MemoryError.
46
Benjamin Peterson71ce9e72008-11-21 22:52:21 +000047- Issue #4367: Python would segfault during compiling when the unicodedata
48 module couldn't be imported and \N escapes were present.
49
Benjamin Peterson866eba92008-11-19 22:05:53 +000050- Issue #4348: Some bytearray methods returned that didn't cause any change to
51 the bytearray, returned the same bytearray instead of a copy.
52
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc83be3d22008-11-18 22:27:00 +000053- Issue #4317: Fixed a crash in the imageop.rgb2rgb8() function.

67
Hirokazu Yamamoto2c66b7c2008-10-09 18:06:58 +000068- On windows, os.chdir given unicode was not working if GetCurrentDirectoryW
69 returned a path longer than MAX_PATH. (But It's doubtful this code path is
70 really executed because I cannot move to such directory on win2k)
71
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc00c94ed2008-10-07 20:40:09 +000072- Issue #4069: When set.remove(element) is used with a set element, the element
73 is temporarily replaced with an equivalent frozenset. But the eventual
74 KeyError would always report the empty frozenset([]) as the missing key. Now
75 it correctly refers to the initial element.
76
Christian Heimes4d8a6f42008-10-02 19:49:47 +000077- Fixed C99 style comments in several files. Python is now C89 compatible

236-----------------
237
Martin v. Löwis9fa5a282008-09-11 06:53:30 +0000238- Issue #3642: Suppress warning in obmalloc when size_t is larger than uint.
239
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc05e34492008-09-10 22:04:45 +0000240- Issue #3743: In a few places, PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T was incorrectly used with
241 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro
242 PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T is designed to select the correct format for the OS
243 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent
244 implementation and uses "%zd" on all platforms for size_t values.
245 This makes a difference on win64, where ``printf`` needs "%Id" to display
246 64bit values.
247
Benjamin Peterson97179b02008-09-09 20:55:01 +0000248- Issue #3634: _weakref.ref(Exception).__init__() gave invalid return value on
249 error.
250
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcd3ffb892008-09-09 07:24:30 +0000251- Issue #3777: long() applied to a float object now always return a long
252 object; previously an int would be returned for small values. the __long__
253 method is allowed to return either an int or a long, but the behaviour of
254 float objects should not change to respect backward compatibility.
255
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +0000256- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with
257 a unicode argument.
258
Benjamin Peterson17f03ca2008-09-01 14:18:30 +0000259- Issue #3683: Fix compilation when --without-threads is given.

Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000262 PyArg_ParseTuple and friends, which occurred when the argument for "s*"
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +0000263 was correctly parsed but parsing of subsequent arguments failed.
264
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000265- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +0000266 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
267 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
268 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
269 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
270 type object.
271
Neal Norwitz18aa3882008-08-24 05:04:52 +0000272- Fix crashes on memory allocation failure found with failmalloc.
273
274- Fix memory leaks found with valgrind and update suppressions file.
275
276- Fix compiler warnings in opt mode which would lead to invalid memory reads.
277
278- Fix problem using wrong name in decimal module reported by pychecker.
279
Christian Heimes7d4c3172008-08-22 19:47:25 +0000280- Silenced another compiler warning about a used but not defined
281 function 'stringlib_contains_obj'.
282
Benjamin Peterson712ee922008-08-24 18:10:20 +0000283- Added warnings on the use of ``__getslice__``, ``__setslice__``, or
284 ``__delslice__``.
285
Gregory P. Smith2bb25cc2008-09-02 05:29:51 +0000286- Issue #3678: Correctly pass LDFLAGS and LDLAST to the linker on shared

291 with x86_64 builds on some platforms (a few Linux flavors and OpenBSD).

411Core and Builtins
412-----------------
413
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000414- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
415 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
416 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
417 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
418 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
419 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
420 default.
421
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000422- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
423 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
424
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000425- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
426 value again.
427
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000428- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
429 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
430 and introducing s*.
431
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000432- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
433 object was stored in the freelist.
434
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000435- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
436 ValueError consistently across platforms.
437
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000438- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
439 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
440 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
441
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000442- Apply security patches from Apple.
443
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000444- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
445 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
446
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000447- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
448 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
449
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000450- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
451 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
452 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
453
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000454- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
455 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
456 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
457 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
458 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
459 failed have been fixed.
460
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000461Library
462-------
463
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +0000464- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
465
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000466- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
467 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
468
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000469- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
470 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
471 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
472
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000473- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
474 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
475 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
476 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
477 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
478 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
479
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000480- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
481 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
482
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +0000483- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
484
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +0000485- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.
486
Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +0000487- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.
488
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +0000489- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
490 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
491
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +0000492- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
493 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
494
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +0000495- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
496 in a redirect.
497
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000498- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in
Brett Cannon721b1452008-08-16 22:00:27 +0000499 BaseHTTPServer, cgi (and rfc822), httplib.
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000500
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +0000501- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash
502 after a 302 response in the case of not going through a proxy.
503
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +0000504- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
505 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
506 regular expression.
507
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +0000508- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now
509 thread-safe.
510
Brett Cannonbf3157b2008-08-14 05:00:03 +0000511- Silence the DeprecationWarning of rfc822 when it is imported by mimetools
512 since mimetools itself is deprecated. Because modules are cached, all
513 subsequent imports of rfc822 will not raise a visible DeprecationWarning.
514
Antoine Pitrou9fcd4b32008-08-11 17:21:36 +0000515- Issue #3134: shutil referenced undefined WindowsError symbol.
516
Robert Schuppenies14646332008-08-10 11:01:53 +0000517- Issue #1342811: Fix leak in Tkinter.Menu.delete. Commands associated to
518 menu entries were not deleted.
519
Brett Cannon83e81842008-08-09 23:30:55 +0000520- Copied the implementation of reduce() to _functools.reduce() to have a
521 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
522
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +0000523- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise
524 a MemoryError rather than silently stop the iteration.
525
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +0000526- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"
527 to _sre.compile() will now be rejected. This should not affect anybody
528 since the re.compile() function never generates invalid re-bytecode.
529
Skip Montanaroa032bf42008-08-08 22:52:51 +0000530- Issue #3436: Make csv.DictReader's fieldnames attribute a property so that
531 upon first access it can be automatically initialized from the csv file if
532 it wasn't initialized during instantiation.
533
Brett Cannon3aa2a492008-08-06 22:28:09 +0000534- Issue #2338: Create imp.reload() to help with transitioning to Python 3.0 as
535 the reload() built-in has been removed.
536
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +0000537- Changed code in the following modules/packages to remove warnings raised
Brett Cannonc1b76e42008-08-09 23:06:16 +0000538 while running under the ``-3`` flag: aifc, asynchat, asyncore, bdb, bsddb,

Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +0000544
Lars Gustäbel727bd0b2008-08-02 11:26:39 +0000545- Issue #3039: Fix tarfile.TarFileCompat.writestr() which always
546 raised an AttributeError.
547
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +0000548- Issue #2523: Fix quadratic behaviour when read()ing a binary file without
Antoine Pitroude781a42008-08-09 12:43:23 +0000549 asking for a specific length. This problem only affected files opened
550 using the new "io" module, not the built-in open() function.
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +0000551

574
Antoine Pitrou5fdfa3e2008-07-25 19:42:26 +0000575- Issue #3394: zipfile.writestr sets external attributes when passed a
576 file name rather than a ZipInfo instance, so files are extracted with
577 mode 0600 rather than 000 under Unix.
578
Gregory P. Smitha36f8fe2008-08-04 00:13:29 +0000579- Issue #1857: subprocess.Popen.poll gained an additional _deadstate keyword

Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +0000605Core and Builtins
606-----------------
607
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000608- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
609 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
610 an integer using operator.index().
611
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000612- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
613 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
614
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000615- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
616 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
617
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000618- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
619 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
620 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
621
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000622- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
623 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
624 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
625 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
626 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C

Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000629- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
630 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
631 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
632 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing

Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000647- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
648 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
649 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
650 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
651 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
652 10, -1).

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001168- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
1169 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
1170 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
1171 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``

1173 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
1174 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001238- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1239 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1240 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1241 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1242 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1243 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1244 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1245 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1246 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1247 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1248 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1249 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1250 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1251 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1252 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1253 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1254 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1255 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1256 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1257 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1258
1259 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1260 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1261 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1262 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1263 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1264 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1265 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1266 access to the underlying socket used.
1267
1268 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1269 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1270 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001271
1272 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001273 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,

1275 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
1276
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001277 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
1278 suite to run in parallel without issue.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc9a0d3462008-03-23 09:55:29 +00001332- Issue #1477: With narrow Unicode builds, the unicode escape sequence
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001333 \Uxxxxxxxx did not accept values outside the Basic Multilingual
1334 Plane. This affected raw unicode literals and the
1335 'raw-unicode-escape' codec. Now UTF-16 surrogates are generated in
1336 this case, like normal unicode literals and the 'unicode-escape'
1337 codec.

Georg Brandlad61bc82008-02-23 15:11:18 +00001550- Issue #2067: file.__exit__() now calls subclasses' close() method.
1551
1552- Patch #1759: Backport of PEP 3129 class decorators.
Christian Heimes5224d282008-02-23 15:01:05 +00001553
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001554- Issue #1881: An internal parser limit has been increased. Also see
Facundo Batistafc2d0102008-02-23 12:01:13 +00001555 issue 215555 for a discussion.
1556
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001557- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1558 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1559 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1560 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1561 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1562 module is:
1563 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1564
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001565- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1566 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1567 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1568 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1569 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1570 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1571
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001572- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1573 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1574 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1575 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1576 PyObject_Format().
1577
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001578- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1579 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1580 state.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +00001581
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001582- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001583 prevent a possible crash: an Abstract Base Class would try to access
1584 a slot on a registered virtual subclass.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001589- Clear all free lists during a gc.collect() of the highest generation
1590 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
1591 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001592
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001593- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a
1594 subclass of collections.defaultdict, if its default_factory is set
1595 to a bound method.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcb01aa432008-02-08 00:56:02 +00001596
Christian Heimesf75dbef2008-02-08 00:11:31 +00001597- Fixed a minor memory leak in dictobject.c. The content of the free
1598 list was not freed on interpreter shutdown.
1599
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001600- Limit free list of method and builtin function objects to 256
1601 entries each.
Christian Heimes6075a822008-02-06 12:44:34 +00001602
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001603- Patch #1953: Added ``sys._compact_freelists()`` and the C API
1604 functions ``PyInt_CompactFreeList`` and ``PyFloat_CompactFreeList``

1608 calls. Python expected the return type int but the fork familie
1609 returns pi_t.
Christian Heimes951cc0f2008-01-31 23:08:23 +00001610
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001611- Issue #1678380: Fix a bug that identifies 0j and -0j when they

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001623- Patch #1473257: generator objects gain a gi_code attribute. This is
1624 the same object as the func_code attribute of the function that
1625 produced the generator.
Georg Brandl0cdf9a32008-01-26 14:14:20 +00001626
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001627- Issue #1920: "while 0" statements were completely removed by the
1628 compiler, even in the presence of an "else" clause, which is
1629 supposed to be run when the condition is false. Now the compiler
1630 correctly emits bytecode for the "else" suite.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc31eaafe2008-01-24 22:59:25 +00001631
Guido van Rossumeead05f2008-01-24 18:21:02 +00001632- A few crashers fixed: weakref_in_del.py (issue #1377858);
