Amaury Forgeot d'Arc32265652008-11-20 23:34:31 +000058 method on file objects with closefd=False. The file descriptor is still

78 __future__ import didn't work.
79
Benjamin Peterson399b1fe2008-10-25 02:53:28 +000080- Using ``nonlocal`` as a variable name will now raise a Py3k SyntaxWarning
Georg Brandl7fb00ad2008-10-25 07:00:52 +000081 because it is a reserved word in 3.x.
Benjamin Peterson399b1fe2008-10-25 02:53:28 +000082

88 is temporarily replaced with an equivalent frozenset. But the eventual
89 KeyError would always report the empty frozenset([]) as the missing key. Now
90 it correctly refers to the initial element.

339Core and Builtins
340-----------------
341
Martin v. Löwis9fa5a282008-09-11 06:53:30 +0000342- Issue #3642: Suppress warning in obmalloc when size_t is larger than uint.
343
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc05e34492008-09-10 22:04:45 +0000344- Issue #3743: In a few places, PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T was incorrectly used with
345 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro
346 PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T is designed to select the correct format for the OS
347 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent
348 implementation and uses "%zd" on all platforms for size_t values.
349 This makes a difference on win64, where ``printf`` needs "%Id" to display
350 64bit values.
351
Benjamin Peterson97179b02008-09-09 20:55:01 +0000352- Issue #3634: _weakref.ref(Exception).__init__() gave invalid return value on
353 error.
354
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcd3ffb892008-09-09 07:24:30 +0000355- Issue #3777: long() applied to a float object now always return a long
356 object; previously an int would be returned for small values. the __long__
357 method is allowed to return either an int or a long, but the behaviour of
358 float objects should not change to respect backward compatibility.
359
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +0000360- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with
361 a unicode argument.
362
Benjamin Peterson17f03ca2008-09-01 14:18:30 +0000363- Issue #3683: Fix compilation when --without-threads is given.
364
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +0000365- Issue #3668: Fix a memory leak with the "s*" argument parser in
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000366 PyArg_ParseTuple and friends, which occurred when the argument for "s*"
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +0000367 was correctly parsed but parsing of subsequent arguments failed.
368
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000369- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +0000370 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
371 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
372 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
373 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
374 type object.
375
Neal Norwitz18aa3882008-08-24 05:04:52 +0000376- Fix crashes on memory allocation failure found with failmalloc.
377
378- Fix memory leaks found with valgrind and update suppressions file.
379
380- Fix compiler warnings in opt mode which would lead to invalid memory reads.
381
382- Fix problem using wrong name in decimal module reported by pychecker.
383
Christian Heimes7d4c3172008-08-22 19:47:25 +0000384- Silenced another compiler warning about a used but not defined
385 function 'stringlib_contains_obj'.
386
Benjamin Peterson712ee922008-08-24 18:10:20 +0000387- Added warnings on the use of ``__getslice__``, ``__setslice__``, or
388 ``__delslice__``.
389
Gregory P. Smith2bb25cc2008-09-02 05:29:51 +0000390- Issue #3678: Correctly pass LDFLAGS and LDLAST to the linker on shared
391 library targets in the Makefile.
392
Gregory P. Smith980b99b2008-09-07 05:15:18 +0000393- Issue #1204: The configure script now tests for additional libraries
394 that may be required when linking against readline. This fixes issues
395 with x86_64 builds on some platforms (a few Linux flavors and OpenBSD).

446 for catch_warnings() also led to an improvement in the raising of a
447 DeprecationWarning related to warnings.warn_explicit().
448
Benjamin Peterson973e6c22008-09-01 23:12:58 +0000449- The deprecation warnings for the old camelCase threading API were removed.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000514
515Core and Builtins
516-----------------
517
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000518- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
519 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
520 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
521 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
522 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
523 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
524 default.
525
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000526- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
527 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
528
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000529- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
530 value again.
531
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000532- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
533 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
534 and introducing s*.
535
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000536- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
537 object was stored in the freelist.
538
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000539- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
540 ValueError consistently across platforms.
541
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000542- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
543 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
544 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
545
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000546- Apply security patches from Apple.
547
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000548- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
549 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
550
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000551- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
552 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
553
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000554- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
555 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
556 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
557
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000558- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
559 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
560 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
561 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
562 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
563 failed have been fixed.
564
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000565Library
566-------
567
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +0000568- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
569
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000570- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
571 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
572
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000573- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
574 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
575 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
576
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000577- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
578 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
579 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
580 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
581 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
582 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
583
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000584- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
585 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
586
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +0000587- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
588
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +0000589- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.
590
Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +0000591- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.
592
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +0000593- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
594 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
595
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +0000596- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
597 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
598
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +0000599- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
600 in a redirect.
601
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000602- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in
Brett Cannon721b1452008-08-16 22:00:27 +0000603 BaseHTTPServer, cgi (and rfc822), httplib.
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000604
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +0000605- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash
606 after a 302 response in the case of not going through a proxy.
607
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +0000608- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
609 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
610 regular expression.
611
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +0000612- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now
613 thread-safe.
614
Brett Cannonbf3157b2008-08-14 05:00:03 +0000615- Silence the DeprecationWarning of rfc822 when it is imported by mimetools
616 since mimetools itself is deprecated. Because modules are cached, all
617 subsequent imports of rfc822 will not raise a visible DeprecationWarning.
618
Antoine Pitrou9fcd4b32008-08-11 17:21:36 +0000619- Issue #3134: shutil referenced undefined WindowsError symbol.

710-----------------
711
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000712- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
713 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
714 an integer using operator.index().
715
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000716- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
717 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
718
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000719- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
720 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
721
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000722- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
723 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
724 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
725
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000726- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
727 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
728 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
729 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
730 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
731 level.
732
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000733- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
734 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
735 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
736 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
737 all imports from that module to fail.
738
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000739- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
740 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
741 new-style classes.
742
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000743- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is

745 another file in sys.stdout.
746
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000747- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
748 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
749 another thread's dictionary.
750
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000751- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
752 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
753 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
754 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
755 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
756 10, -1).
757
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000758- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
759 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
760 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000798- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
799 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000800 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000801 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never

Brett Cannonb61d8012008-05-11 23:39:04 +00001206- ``Lib/lib-old`` is now added to sys.path.
1207
Ronald Oussoren5640ce22008-06-05 12:58:24 +00001208- On MacOS X it is now possible to install the framework in 64-bit
1209 mode or even as a 4-way universal binary (that is, PPC, i386,
Georg Brandl5cc774e2008-06-11 20:28:06 +00001210 PPC64 and x86_64 support in one binary).
Ronald Oussoren5640ce22008-06-05 12:58:24 +00001211
1212 This is controlled by the configure argument ``--with-universal-archs``:
1213
1214 - ``--with-universal-archs=all``: install 4-way universal
1215
1216 - ``--with-universal-archs=32-bit``: install 2-way universal, 32-bit (the default)
1217
1218 - ``--with-universal-archs=64-bit``: install 2-way universal, 64-bit
1219
1220 This option should be used in combination with ``--enable-universalsdk=``.
1221
1222 NOTE: 64-bit and 4-way builds are only suppported on Mac OS X 10.5 (or later).

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001272- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
1273 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
1274 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
1275 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
1276 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
1277 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
1278 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support

1340-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001341
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001342- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1343 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1344 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1345 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1346 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1347 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1348 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1349 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1350 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1351 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1352 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1353 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1354 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1355 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1356 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1357 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1358 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1359 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1360 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1361 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1362
1363 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1364 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1365 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1366 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1367 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1368 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1369 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1370 access to the underlying socket used.
1371
1372 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1373 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1374 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001375
1376 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001377 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001378 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
1379 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
1380
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001381 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
1382 suite to run in parallel without issue.

Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001661- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1662 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1663 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1664 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged

1666 module is:
1667 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1668
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001669- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1670 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1671 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1672 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1673 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1674 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1675
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001676- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new

1695 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001696

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001842- Issue #1686386: Tuple's tp_repr did not take into account the
1843 possibility of having a self-referential tuple, which is possible

Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +00001915- Bug #1683368: The object.__init__() and object.__new__() methods are
1916 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when
1917 either allows excess arguments is when it is not overridden and the
1918 other one is. For backwards compatibility, when both are
1919 overridden, it is a deprecation warning (for now; maybe a Py3k
Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +00001920 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
1921 as supported by type.__new__().
Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +00001922
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001923- Patch #1675423: PyComplex_AsCComplex() now tries to convert an
1924 object to complex using its __complex__() method before falling back
1925 to the __float__() method. Therefore, the functions in the cmath
1926 module now can operate on objects that define a __complex__()
1927 method.
