10*Release date: XX-Aug-2008*
11
12Core and Builtins
13-----------------
14
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +000015- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
16 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
17 and introducing s*.
18
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +000019- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
20 object was stored in the freelist.
21
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +000022- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
23 ValueError consistently across platforms.
24
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +000025- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
26 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
27 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
28
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +000029- Apply security patches from Apple.
30
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +000031- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
32 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
33
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +000034- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
35 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
36
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +000037- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
38 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
39 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
40
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +000041- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
42 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
43 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
44 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
45 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
46 failed have been fixed.
47
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +000048Library
49-------
50
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +000051- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
52 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
53
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +000054- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
55 in a redirect.
56
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +000057- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in
Brett Cannon721b1452008-08-16 22:00:27 +000058 BaseHTTPServer, cgi (and rfc822), httplib.
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +000059
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +000060- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash
61 after a 302 response in the case of not going through a proxy.
62
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +000063- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
64 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
65 regular expression.
66
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +000067- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now
68 thread-safe.
69
Brett Cannonbf3157b2008-08-14 05:00:03 +000070- Silence the DeprecationWarning of rfc822 when it is imported by mimetools
71 since mimetools itself is deprecated. Because modules are cached, all
72 subsequent imports of rfc822 will not raise a visible DeprecationWarning.
73
Antoine Pitrou9fcd4b32008-08-11 17:21:36 +000074- Issue #3134: shutil referenced undefined WindowsError symbol.
75
Robert Schuppenies14646332008-08-10 11:01:53 +000076- Issue #1342811: Fix leak in Tkinter.Menu.delete. Commands associated to
77 menu entries were not deleted.
78
Brett Cannon83e81842008-08-09 23:30:55 +000079- Copied the implementation of reduce() to _functools.reduce() to have a
80 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
81
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +000082- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise
83 a MemoryError rather than silently stop the iteration.
84
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +000085- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"
86 to _sre.compile() will now be rejected. This should not affect anybody
87 since the re.compile() function never generates invalid re-bytecode.
88
Skip Montanaroa032bf42008-08-08 22:52:51 +000089- Issue #3436: Make csv.DictReader's fieldnames attribute a property so that
90 upon first access it can be automatically initialized from the csv file if
91 it wasn't initialized during instantiation.
92
Brett Cannon3aa2a492008-08-06 22:28:09 +000093- Issue #2338: Create imp.reload() to help with transitioning to Python 3.0 as
94 the reload() built-in has been removed.
95
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +000096- Changed code in the following modules/packages to remove warnings raised
Brett Cannonc1b76e42008-08-09 23:06:16 +000097 while running under the ``-3`` flag: aifc, asynchat, asyncore, bdb, bsddb,
Brett Cannon047e4a92008-08-17 04:16:04 +000098 ConfigParser, cookielib, csv, difflib, distutils, DocXMLRPCServer, email,
99 filecmp, fileinput, inspect, logging, modulefinder, pdb, pickle, profile,
100 pstats, pydoc, re, rlcompleter, SimpleXMLRPCServer, shelve, socket,
101 subprocess, sqlite3, tarfile, Tkinter, test.test_support, textwrap,
102 threading, tokenize, traceback, urlparse, wsgiref, xml, xmlrpclib.
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +0000103
Lars Gustäbel727bd0b2008-08-02 11:26:39 +0000104- Issue #3039: Fix tarfile.TarFileCompat.writestr() which always
105 raised an AttributeError.
106
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +0000107- Issue #2523: Fix quadratic behaviour when read()ing a binary file without
Antoine Pitroude781a42008-08-09 12:43:23 +0000108 asking for a specific length. This problem only affected files opened
109 using the new "io" module, not the built-in open() function.
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +0000110
Mark Dickinsonfe84cce2008-07-27 06:39:07 +0000111- Issue #3449: Update decimal module to use most recent specification
112 (v. 1.68) and tests (v. 2.58) from IBM.
113
Skip Montanarof9ac43f2008-07-27 00:50:41 +0000114- Issue 3437: Bug fix in robotparser parsing of Allow: lines.
115

129- Issue #3389: Allow resolving dotted names for handlers in logging
130 configuration files.
131
132- Deprecate the sunaudio module for removal in Python 3.0.
133
Antoine Pitrou5fdfa3e2008-07-25 19:42:26 +0000134- Issue #3394: zipfile.writestr sets external attributes when passed a
135 file name rather than a ZipInfo instance, so files are extracted with
136 mode 0600 rather than 000 under Unix.
137
Gregory P. Smitha36f8fe2008-08-04 00:13:29 +0000138- Issue #1857: subprocess.Popen.poll gained an additional _deadstate keyword
139 argument in python 2.5, this broke code that subclassed Popen to include its
140 own poll method. Fixed my moving _deadstate to an _internal_poll method.
141
Martin v. Löwis8dbf3642008-08-01 14:10:26 +0000142Build

146
Nick Coghlan2a0c2b12008-08-04 12:47:17 +0000147Documentation
148-------------
149
150- Issue #643841: The language reference now provides more detailed
151 coverage of the lookup process for special methods. The disclaimers
152 regarding lack of coverage of new-style classes have also been
153 removed, since the coverage is now fairly reasonable.

160
Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +0000161Core and Builtins
162-----------------
163
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000164- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
165 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
166 an integer using operator.index().
167
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000168- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
169 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
170
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000171- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
172 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
173
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000174- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
175 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
176 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
177
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000178- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
179 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
180 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
181 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
182 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
183 level.
184
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000185- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
186 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
187 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
188 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
189 all imports from that module to fail.
190
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000191- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
192 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
193 new-style classes.
194
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000195- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
196 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
197 another file in sys.stdout.
198
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000199- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
200 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
201 another thread's dictionary.
202
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000203- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
204 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
205 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
206 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
207 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
208 10, -1).
209
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000210- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
211 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
212 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000213
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000214- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
215 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into
216 ClearFreeList apis and calls them via gc.collect().
Gregory P. Smith2fe77062008-07-06 03:35:58 +0000217
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000218Library
219-------
220
Thomas Heller57adf222008-08-14 19:10:48 +0000221- Issue #3554: ctypes.string_at and ctypes.wstring_at did call Python
222 api functions without holding the GIL, which could lead to a fatal
223 error when they failed.
224
Martin v. Löwisaabf4042008-08-02 07:20:25 +0000225- Issue #799428: Fix Tkinter.Misc._nametowidget to unwrap Tcl command objects.
226
Jesse Noller7fb96402008-07-17 21:01:05 +0000227- Issue #3395: fix reference in test_multiprocessing to old debugInfo method
228
Georg Brandla24869a2008-07-16 22:33:18 +0000229- Issue #3312: Fix two crashes in sqlite3.
230

232
Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +0000233- Issue #3125: Remove copy_reg in multiprocessing and replace it with
234 ForkingPickler.register() to resolve conflict with ctypes.
235
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000236- Issue #3090: Fixed ARCHFLAGS parsing on OS/X
Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +0000237
Thomas Heller880f5292008-07-15 19:39:38 +0000238- Issue #3313: Fixed a crash when a failed dlopen() call does not set
239 a valid dlerror() message.
240
Thomas Heller2bad6572008-07-15 17:19:50 +0000241- Issue #3258: Fixed a crash when a ctypes POINTER type to an
242 incomplete structure was created.
243

247
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000248- Issue #3301: Bisect module behaved badly when lo was negative.
Raymond Hettinger3cd1e422008-07-10 14:03:19 +0000249
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000250- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
251 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000252 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000253 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
254 merged into trunk.
255
Georg Brandle78fbcc2008-07-05 10:13:36 +0000256- Issue #2663: add filtering capability to shutil.copytree().
257

260- Issue #1526: Allow more than 64k files to be added to Zip64 file.
261
262- Issue #1746: Correct handling of zipfile archive comments (previously
263 archives with comments over 4k were flagged as invalid). Allow writing
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000264 Zip files with archives by setting the 'comment' attribute of a ZipFile.
Martin v. Löwis8c436412008-07-03 12:51:14 +0000265
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000266- Issue #449227: The rlcompleter module now adds "(" to callable objects
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000267 when completed.
Facundo Batista66c52772008-07-02 16:52:55 +0000268
Nick Coghlanc060b0e2008-07-02 13:09:19 +0000269- Issue #3190: Pydoc now hides the automatic module attribute __package__ (the
270 handling is now the same as that of other special attributes like __name__).
271
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000272- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for
273 removal in Python 3.0 in favor of urllib2.urlopen().

276 interrupted by a signal.
277
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000278- Issue #3309: Fix bz2.BZFile iterator to release its internal lock
Gregory P. Smith3b1e6b22008-07-07 04:31:58 +0000279 properly when raising an exception due to the bz2file being closed.
280 Prevents a deadlock.
281
Gregory P. Smithc4691ec2008-07-07 05:09:12 +0000282- Issue #3094: httplib.HTTPSConnection Host: headers no longer include the
283 redundant ":443" port number designation when the connection is using the
284 default https port (443).
285
Gregory P. Smithdb3409c2008-07-17 03:13:05 +0000286- Issue #874900: after an os.fork() call the threading module state is cleaned
287 up in the child process to prevent deadlock and report proper thread counts
288 if the new process uses the threading module.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000721- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
722 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
723 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
724 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``

726 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
727 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000791- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
792 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
793 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
794 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
795 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
796 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
797 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
798 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
799 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
800 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
801 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
802 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
803 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
804 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
805 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
806 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
807 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
808 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
809 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
810 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
811
812 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
813 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
814 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
815 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
816 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
817 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
818 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
819 access to the underlying socket used.
820
821 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
822 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
823 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000824
825 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000826 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000827 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
828 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
829
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000830 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
831 suite to run in parallel without issue.

884
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc9a0d3462008-03-23 09:55:29 +0000885- Issue #1477: With narrow Unicode builds, the unicode escape sequence
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000886 \Uxxxxxxxx did not accept values outside the Basic Multilingual
887 Plane. This affected raw unicode literals and the
888 'raw-unicode-escape' codec. Now UTF-16 surrogates are generated in

1109
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001110- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1111 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1112 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1113 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1114 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1115 module is:
1116 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1117
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001118- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1119 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1120 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1121 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1122 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1123 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1124
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001125- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1126 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a

1129 PyObject_Format().

Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +00001364- Bug #1683368: The object.__init__() and object.__new__() methods are
1365 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when
1366 either allows excess arguments is when it is not overridden and the
1367 other one is. For backwards compatibility, when both are
1368 overridden, it is a deprecation warning (for now; maybe a Py3k
Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +00001369 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
