8================================
9
10Core and Builtins
11-----------------
12
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +000013- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
14 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
15 an integer using operator.index().
16
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +000017- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
18 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
19
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +000020- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
21 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
22
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +000023- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
24 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
25 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
26
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +000027- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
28 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
29 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
30 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
31 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
32 level.
33
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +000034- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
35 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
36 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
37 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
38 all imports from that module to fail.
39
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +000040- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
41 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
42 new-style classes.
43
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +000044- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
45 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
46 another file in sys.stdout.
47
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +000048- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
49 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
50 another thread's dictionary.
51
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +000052- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
53 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
54 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
55 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
56 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
57 10, -1).
58
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +000059- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments, f(a=2, a=23),
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +000060 would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression from 2.4 caused by the
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +000061 switch to the new compiler.
62
Gregory P. Smith2fe77062008-07-06 03:35:58 +000063- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with other
64 freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into ClearFreeList apis and
65 calls them via gc.collect().
66
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +000067Library
68-------
69

73
Georg Brandl86cbf812008-07-16 21:31:41 +000074- Issue #1608818: Fix misbehavior in os.listdir() if readdir() fails.
75
Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +000076- Issue #3125: Remove copy_reg in multiprocessing and replace it with
77 ForkingPickler.register() to resolve conflict with ctypes.
78

80
Thomas Heller880f5292008-07-15 19:39:38 +000081- Issue #3313: Fixed a crash when a failed dlopen() call does not set
82 a valid dlerror() message.
83
Thomas Heller2bad6572008-07-15 17:19:50 +000084- Issue #3258: Fixed a crash when a ctypes POINTER type to an
85 incomplete structure was created.
86
Brett Cannon3d0b9f02008-07-13 01:15:07 +000087- Issue #3339: dummy_thread.acquire() should not return None.
88
Raymond Hettingerb01713e2008-07-10 14:34:57 +000089- Issue #3285: Fractions from_float() and from_decimal() accept Integral arguments.
90
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +000091- Issue #3301: Bisect module behaved badly when lo was negative.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +000093- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
94 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +000095 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +000096 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
97 merged into trunk.

102
103- Issue #1526: Allow more than 64k files to be added to Zip64 file.
104
105- Issue #1746: Correct handling of zipfile archive comments (previously
106 archives with comments over 4k were flagged as invalid). Allow writing
107 Zip files with archives by setting the 'comment' attribute of a ZipFile.
108
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000109- Issue #449227: The rlcompleter module now adds "(" to callable objects

Nick Coghlanc060b0e2008-07-02 13:09:19 +0000112- Issue #3190: Pydoc now hides the automatic module attribute __package__ (the
113 handling is now the same as that of other special attributes like __name__).
114
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000115- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for
116 removal in Python 3.0 in favor of urllib2.urlopen().
117
Gregory P. Smithf4140642008-07-06 07:16:40 +0000118- Issue #2113: Fix error in subprocess.Popen if the select system call is

126 redundant ":443" port number designation when the connection is using the
127 default https port (443).
128
Gregory P. Smithdb3409c2008-07-17 03:13:05 +0000129- Issue #874900: after an os.fork() call the threading module state is cleaned
130 up in the child process to prevent deadlock and report proper thread counts
131 if the new process uses the threading module.
132
Nick Coghlan38469e22008-07-13 12:23:47 +0000133Tests
134-----
135
136- test.test_support.catch_warning now keeps track of all warnings it sees
137 and is now better documented. Explicit unit tests for this context manager
138 have been added to test_warnings.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000565- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
566 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
567 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where

570 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
571 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support

Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000634
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000635- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
636 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
637 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
638 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
639 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
640 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
641 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
642 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
643 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
644 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
645 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
646 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
647 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
648 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
649 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
650 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
651 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
652 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
653 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
654 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
655
656 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
657 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
658 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
659 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
660 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
661 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
662 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
663 access to the underlying socket used.
664
665 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
666 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
667 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000668
669 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000670 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000671 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
672 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
673
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000674 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
675 suite to run in parallel without issue.

953
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +0000954- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
955 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
956 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
957 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
958 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
959 module is:
960 from future_builtins import hex, oct
961
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +0000962- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
963 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
964 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
965 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
966 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
967 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
968
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +0000969- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
970 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
971 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
972 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
973 PyObject_Format().
974
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000975- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
976 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
977 state.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +0000978
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000979- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also

988 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +0000989
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000990- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a
