53 module.
54
55- Four new methods were added to the math and cmath modules:
56 acosh, asinh, atanh and log1p.
57
Gregory P. Smith671c5d92008-04-09 18:18:43 +000058- zlib.decompressobj().flush(value) no longer crashes the interpreter when
59 passed a value less than or equal to zero.
60
Brett Cannone9746892008-04-12 23:44:07 +000061- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the original Python
62 code has been kept as backup). This will allow for using the 'warning's
63 machinery in such places as the parser where use of pure Python code is not
Brett Cannonb457dda2008-05-02 02:25:09 +000064 possible. Both the ``showarning()`` and ``formatwarning()`` gain an
65 optional 'line' argument which is not called by default for
Brett Cannon8a232cc2008-05-05 05:32:07 +000066 backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting ``warnings.showwarning()`` to
67 an implementation that lacks support for the ``line`` argument will raise a
68 DeprecationWarning.

Thomas Hellerbf027c42008-04-24 18:14:19 +000090 reference to themselves.
91
Gregory P. Smithd59fefb2008-04-22 08:11:33 +000092- The getpass module has been improved on Unix. It now uses /dev/tty
93 by default and uses stderr instead of stdout. A GetPassWarning is
94 issued when input echo cannot be controlled.
Gregory P. Smith41e30182008-04-21 21:31:08 +000095
Skip Montanarob131f042008-04-18 20:35:46 +000096- Issue #2014: Allow XML-RPC datetime objects to have dates before

110 extension modules between 32 and 64 bit platforms. See the distutls
111 build documentation for more information.
112
Gregory P. Smithaa63d0d2008-04-06 23:11:17 +0000113- Issue #815646: Individual file objects may now be used from multiple
114 threads at once without fear of crashing the Python interpreter. If
115 file.close() is called while an object is in use by another thread
116 an IOError exception will be raised and the file will not be closed.
117
Thomas Hellerf7906482008-04-04 19:43:25 +0000118- The bundled libffi copy is now in sync with the recently released
119 libffi3.0.5 version, apart from some small changes to
120 Modules/_ctypes/libffi/configure.ac.
121
Fred Drake46c58c12008-04-04 05:41:30 +0000122- Issue #2385: distutils.core.run_script() makes __file__ available, so the
123 controlled environment will more closely mirror the typical script
124 environment. This supports setup.py scripts that refer to data files.
125
Barry Warsawba437742008-04-04 01:34:41 +0000126Tests
127-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000128- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining ports
129 to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an effort to
130 facilitate running multiple instances of the entire regression test suite
131 in parallel without issue. test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such
132 that it will always return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case
133 with the previous implementation, especially if socket options had been
134 set that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
135 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception if it
136 is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the SO_REUSEADDR or
137 SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if available, bind_port()
138 will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on the socket it's been passed.
139 This currently only applies to Windows. This option prevents any other
140 sockets from binding to the host/port we've bound to, thus removing the
141 possibility of the 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it,
142 that occurs when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a
143 host/port that's already been bound by another socket. The optional
144 preferred port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
145 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
146
147 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will pass
148 a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an unused port.
149 The temporary socket object is then closed and deleted, and the port is
150 returned. This method should only be used for obtaining an unused port
151 in order to pass to an external program (i.e. the -accept [port] argument
152 to openssl's s_server mode) or as a parameter to a server-oriented class
153 that doesn't give you direct access to the underlying socket used.
154
155 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used for
156 the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and connect).
157
158 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
159 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
160 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
161 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
162
163 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test suite to
164 run in parallel without issue.

172 gcc is used as compiler.
173
Ronald Oussoren580c7fe2008-05-02 19:45:11 +0000174- Issue #2573: On MacOS X it is now possible to install the framework
175 with a different name using --with-framework-name=NAME.

181 to the new files Include/pymath.h and Python/pymath.h for
182 platforms which provide the functions through their libm. The
183 files also contains several helpers and constants for math.
184
Benjamin Petersona692c4d2008-04-27 02:28:02 +0000185- Added a new convenience function, PyErr_WarnPy3k, for issuing Py3k
186 warnings.

427
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +0000428- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
429 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
430 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
431 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
432 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
433 module is:
434 from future_builtins import hex, oct
435
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +0000436- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
437 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
438 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
439 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
440 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
441 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
442
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +0000443- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new

465
Christian Heimesf75dbef2008-02-08 00:11:31 +0000466- Fixed a minor memory leak in dictobject.c. The content of the free
467 list was not freed on interpreter shutdown.
468
Christian Heimes6075a822008-02-06 12:44:34 +0000469- Limit free list of method and builtin function objects to 256 entries

490
Georg Brandl0cdf9a32008-01-26 14:14:20 +0000491- Patch #1473257: generator objects gain a gi_code attribute. This is the
492 same object as the func_code attribute of the function that produced the
493 generator.
494
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc31eaafe2008-01-24 22:59:25 +0000495- Issue #1920: "while 0" statements were completely removed by the compiler,
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000496 even in the presence of an "else" clause, which is supposed to be run when
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc31eaafe2008-01-24 22:59:25 +0000497 the condition is false. Now the compiler correctly emits bytecode for the

2027-----
2028
Christian Heimes5b970ad2008-02-06 13:33:44 +00002029- Unified naming convention for free lists and their limits. All free lists
2030 in Object/ are named ``free_list``, the counter ``numfree`` and the upper
2031 limit is a macro ``PyName_MAXFREELIST`` inside an #ifndef block.
2032
Amaury Forgeot d'Arccab3d982008-02-03 22:51:43 +00002033- ``PySet_Add()`` can now modify a newly created frozenset. Similarly to
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00002034 ``PyTuple_SetItem``, it can be used to populate a brand new frozenset; but
Amaury Forgeot d'Arccab3d982008-02-03 22:51:43 +00002035 it does not steal a reference to the added item.
2036
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00002037- Added ``PySet_Check()`` and ``PyFrozenSet_Check()`` to the set API.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arccab3d982008-02-03 22:51:43 +00002038
Georg Brandl6caad7d2008-01-26 14:19:22 +00002039- Backport of PyUnicode_FromString(), _FromStringAndSize(), _Format and
2040 _FormatV from Python 3.0. Made PyLong_AsSsize_t and PyLong_FromSsize_t
2041 public functions.
2042
2043- Patch #1720595: add T_BOOL to the range of structmember types.
2044
2045- Issue #1534: Added ``PyFloat_GetMax()``, ``PyFloat_GetMin()`` and
2046 ``PyFloat_GetInfo()`` to the float API.
2047
2048- Issue #1521: On 64bit platforms, using PyArgs_ParseTuple with the t# of w#
2049 format code incorrectly truncated the length to an int, even when
2050 PY_SSIZE_T_CLEAN is set. The str.decode method used to return incorrect
2051 results with huge strings.
2052
2053- Issue #1629: Renamed Py_Size, Py_Type and Py_Refcnt to Py_SIZE, Py_TYPE
2054 and Py_REFCNT.
2055
2056- PEP 3123: Provide forward compatibility with Python 3.0, while keeping
2057 backwards compatibility. Add Py_Refcnt, Py_Type, Py_Size, and
2058 PyVarObject_HEAD_INIT.
2059
2060- Py_ssize_t fields work in structmember when HAVE_LONG_LONG is not defined.
2061
2062- Patch #1733960: Allow T_LONGLONG to accept ints.
2063
2064- T_PYSSIZET can now be used in PyMemberDef lists for Py_ssize_t members.

2070- Fix some leftovers from the conversion from int to Py_ssize_t
2071 (relevant to strings and sequences of more than 2**31 items).
2072
2073- Make _PyGILState_NoteThreadState() static, it was not used anywhere
2074 outside of pystate.c and should not be necessary.
2075
Christian Heimes000a0742008-01-03 22:16:32 +00002076- ``PyImport_Import`` and ``PyImport_ImportModule`` now always do absolute
2077 imports. In earlier versions they might have used relative imports under
2078 some conditions.
2079
Andrew M. Kuchlingadc60ab2008-01-04 02:26:00 +00002080- Added case insensitive comparison methods ``PyOS_stricmp(char*, char*)``
Christian Heimes000a0742008-01-03 22:16:32 +00002081 and ``PyOS_strnicmp(char*, char*, Py_ssize_t)``.
