Martin v. Löwis9fa5a282008-09-11 06:53:30 +0000405- Issue #3642: Suppress warning in obmalloc when size_t is larger than uint.
406
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc05e34492008-09-10 22:04:45 +0000407- Issue #3743: In a few places, PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T was incorrectly used with
408 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro
409 PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T is designed to select the correct format for the OS
410 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent
411 implementation and uses "%zd" on all platforms for size_t values.
412 This makes a difference on win64, where ``printf`` needs "%Id" to display
413 64bit values.
414
Benjamin Peterson97179b02008-09-09 20:55:01 +0000415- Issue #3634: _weakref.ref(Exception).__init__() gave invalid return value on

419 object; previously an int would be returned for small values. the __long__
420 method is allowed to return either an int or a long, but the behaviour of

Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000432- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +0000433 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__

578Core and Builtins
579-----------------
580
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000581- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
582 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
583 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
584 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
585 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
586 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
587 default.
588
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000589- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
590 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
591
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000592- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
593 value again.
594
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000595- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
596 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
597 and introducing s*.
598
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000599- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
600 object was stored in the freelist.
601
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000602- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
603 ValueError consistently across platforms.
604
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000605- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
606 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
607 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
608
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000609- Apply security patches from Apple.
610
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000611- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
612 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
613
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000614- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
615 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
616
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000617- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
618 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
619 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
620
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000621- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
622 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
623 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
624 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
625 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
626 failed have been fixed.

Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +0000631- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
632
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000633- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
634 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
635
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000636- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
637 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
638 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.

773-----------------
774
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000775- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
776 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
777 an integer using operator.index().
778
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000779- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
780 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
781
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000782- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
783 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
784
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000785- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
786 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
787 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
788
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000789- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
790 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
791 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
792 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
793 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
794 level.
795
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000796- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
797 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
798 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
799 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
800 all imports from that module to fail.
801
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000802- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
803 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
804 new-style classes.
805
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000806- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
807 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
808 another file in sys.stdout.
809
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000810- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
811 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
812 another thread's dictionary.
813
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000814- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
815 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
816 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
817 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
818 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
819 10, -1).
820
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000821- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
822 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
823 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000824
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000825- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with

834 error when they failed.
835
Martin v. Löwisaabf4042008-08-02 07:20:25 +0000836- Issue #799428: Fix Tkinter.Misc._nametowidget to unwrap Tcl command objects.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000861- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
862 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000863 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000864 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
865 merged into trunk.

882
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000883- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001405- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1406 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1407 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1408 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1409 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1410 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1411 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1412 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1413 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1414 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1415 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1416 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1417 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1418 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1419 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1420 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1421 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1422 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1423 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1424 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1425
1426 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1427 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1428 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1429 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1430 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1431 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1432 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1433 access to the underlying socket used.
1434
1435 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1436 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1437 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001438
1439 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:

1723
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001724- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1725 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1726 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1727 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1728 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1729 module is:
1730 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1731
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001732- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1733 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1734 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1735 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1736 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1737 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1738
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001739- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1740 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1741 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1742 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1743 PyObject_Format().
1744
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001745- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1746 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
