31 object also got a new readonly attribute ``closefd``.

58 302 conformant loader) will now work correctly in most cases (they
59 are still subject to the constraints that exist for all code running
60 from inside a module loaded via a PEP 302 loader and attempting to
61 perform IO operations based on __file__). Original patch by
62 Alexander Belopolsky.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc05e34492008-09-10 22:04:45 +0000307- Issue #3743: In a few places, PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T was incorrectly used with
308 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro

310 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent
311 implementation and uses "%zd" on all platforms for size_t values.
312 This makes a difference on win64, where ``printf`` needs "%Id" to display
313 64bit values.

319 object; previously an int would be returned for small values. the __long__
320 method is allowed to return either an int or a long, but the behaviour of
321 float objects should not change to respect backward compatibility.
322
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +0000323- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with

Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000332- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +0000333 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
334 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
335 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
336 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
337 type object.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000477
478Core and Builtins
479-----------------
480
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000481- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
482 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
483 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
484 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
485 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
486 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
487 default.
488
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000489- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
490 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
491
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000492- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
493 value again.
494
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000495- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
496 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
497 and introducing s*.
498
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000499- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
500 object was stored in the freelist.
501
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000502- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
503 ValueError consistently across platforms.
504
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000505- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
506 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
507 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
508
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000509- Apply security patches from Apple.
510
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000511- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
512 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
513
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000514- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
515 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
516
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000517- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
518 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
519 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
520
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000521- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
522 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
523 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
524 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
525 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
526 failed have been fixed.
527
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000528Library
529-------
530
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +0000531- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
532
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000533- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
534 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
535
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000536- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
537 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
538 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
539
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000540- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
541 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
542 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
543 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
544 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
545 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
546
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000547- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
548 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
549
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +0000550- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
551
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +0000552- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.
553
Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +0000554- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.
555
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +0000556- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
557 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
558
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +0000559- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
560 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
561
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +0000562- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
563 in a redirect.
564
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000565- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in
Brett Cannon721b1452008-08-16 22:00:27 +0000566 BaseHTTPServer, cgi (and rfc822), httplib.
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000567
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +0000568- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash
569 after a 302 response in the case of not going through a proxy.
570
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +0000571- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
572 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
573 regular expression.
574
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +0000575- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now
576 thread-safe.
577
Brett Cannonbf3157b2008-08-14 05:00:03 +0000578- Silence the DeprecationWarning of rfc822 when it is imported by mimetools
579 since mimetools itself is deprecated. Because modules are cached, all
580 subsequent imports of rfc822 will not raise a visible DeprecationWarning.
581
Antoine Pitrou9fcd4b32008-08-11 17:21:36 +0000582- Issue #3134: shutil referenced undefined WindowsError symbol.
583
Robert Schuppenies14646332008-08-10 11:01:53 +0000584- Issue #1342811: Fix leak in Tkinter.Menu.delete. Commands associated to
585 menu entries were not deleted.
586
Brett Cannon83e81842008-08-09 23:30:55 +0000587- Copied the implementation of reduce() to _functools.reduce() to have a
588 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
589
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +0000590- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise
591 a MemoryError rather than silently stop the iteration.
592
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +0000593- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"
594 to _sre.compile() will now be rejected. This should not affect anybody
595 since the re.compile() function never generates invalid re-bytecode.
596
Skip Montanaroa032bf42008-08-08 22:52:51 +0000597- Issue #3436: Make csv.DictReader's fieldnames attribute a property so that
598 upon first access it can be automatically initialized from the csv file if
599 it wasn't initialized during instantiation.
600
Brett Cannon3aa2a492008-08-06 22:28:09 +0000601- Issue #2338: Create imp.reload() to help with transitioning to Python 3.0 as
602 the reload() built-in has been removed.

Lars Gustäbel727bd0b2008-08-02 11:26:39 +0000612- Issue #3039: Fix tarfile.TarFileCompat.writestr() which always
613 raised an AttributeError.
614
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +0000615- Issue #2523: Fix quadratic behaviour when read()ing a binary file without
Antoine Pitroude781a42008-08-09 12:43:23 +0000616 asking for a specific length. This problem only affected files opened
617 using the new "io" module, not the built-in open() function.

673-----------------
674
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000675- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
676 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
677 an integer using operator.index().
678
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000679- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
680 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
681
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000682- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
683 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
684
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000685- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
686 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
687 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
688
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000689- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
690 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
691 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
692 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
693 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
694 level.
695
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000696- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
697 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
698 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
699 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
700 all imports from that module to fail.
701
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000702- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
703 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
704 new-style classes.

709
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000710- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from

712 another thread's dictionary.
713
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000714- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
715 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
716 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
717 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
718 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
719 10, -1).
720
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000721- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
722 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
723 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000761- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
762 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000763 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000764 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001235- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
1236 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
1237 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
1238 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``

1240 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
1241 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001305- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1306 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1307 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1308 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1309 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1310 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1311 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1312 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1313 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1314 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1315 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1316 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1317 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1318 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1319 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1320 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1321 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1322 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1323 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1324 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1325
1326 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1327 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1328 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1329 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1330 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1331 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1332 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1333 access to the underlying socket used.
1334
1335 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1336 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1337 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001338
1339 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001340 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,

1343

1345 suite to run in parallel without issue.

Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001624- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1625 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1626 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1627 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged

1629 module is:
1630 from future_builtins import hex, oct

Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001632- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1633 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1634 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1635 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1636 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1637 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1638
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001639- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
