24
Jeffrey Yasskin69614982008-12-11 05:21:18 +000025- Issue #4589: Fixed exception handling when the __exit__ function of a

30 kept open but the file object behaves like a closed file. The ``FileIO``
31 object also got a new readonly attribute ``closefd``.
32
Georg Brandlfa71a902008-12-05 09:08:28 +000033- Issue #3689: The list reversed iterator now supports __length_hint__

58 302 conformant loader) will now work correctly in most cases (they
59 are still subject to the constraints that exist for all code running
60 from inside a module loaded via a PEP 302 loader and attempting to
61 perform IO operations based on __file__). Original patch by
62 Alexander Belopolsky.

Martin v. Löwis9fa5a282008-09-11 06:53:30 +0000312- Issue #3642: Suppress warning in obmalloc when size_t is larger than uint.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc05e34492008-09-10 22:04:45 +0000314- Issue #3743: In a few places, PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T was incorrectly used with
315 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro
316 PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T is designed to select the correct format for the OS
317 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent
318 implementation and uses "%zd" on all platforms for size_t values.
319 This makes a difference on win64, where ``printf`` needs "%Id" to display
320 64bit values.
321
Benjamin Peterson97179b02008-09-09 20:55:01 +0000322- Issue #3634: _weakref.ref(Exception).__init__() gave invalid return value on

326 object; previously an int would be returned for small values. the __long__
327 method is allowed to return either an int or a long, but the behaviour of

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000484
485Core and Builtins
486-----------------
487
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000488- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
489 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
490 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
491 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
492 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
493 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
494 default.
495
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000496- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
497 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
498
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000499- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
500 value again.
501
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000502- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
503 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
504 and introducing s*.
505
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000506- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
507 object was stored in the freelist.
508
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000509- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
510 ValueError consistently across platforms.
511
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000512- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
513 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
514 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
515
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000516- Apply security patches from Apple.
517
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000518- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
519 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
520
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000521- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
522 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
523
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000524- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
525 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
526 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
527
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000528- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
529 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
530 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
531 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
532 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
533 failed have been fixed.
534
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000535Library
536-------
537
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +0000538- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
539
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000540- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
541 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
542
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000543- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
544 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
545 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
546
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000547- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
548 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
549 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
550 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
551 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
552 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
553
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000554- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
555 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
556
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +0000557- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
558
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +0000559- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.
560
Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +0000561- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.
562
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +0000563- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
564 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
565
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +0000566- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
567 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
568
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +0000569- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
570 in a redirect.
571
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000572- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in
Brett Cannon721b1452008-08-16 22:00:27 +0000573 BaseHTTPServer, cgi (and rfc822), httplib.
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000574
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +0000575- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash
576 after a 302 response in the case of not going through a proxy.
577
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +0000578- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
579 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
580 regular expression.
581
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +0000582- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now
583 thread-safe.
584
Brett Cannonbf3157b2008-08-14 05:00:03 +0000585- Silence the DeprecationWarning of rfc822 when it is imported by mimetools
586 since mimetools itself is deprecated. Because modules are cached, all
587 subsequent imports of rfc822 will not raise a visible DeprecationWarning.
588
Antoine Pitrou9fcd4b32008-08-11 17:21:36 +0000589- Issue #3134: shutil referenced undefined WindowsError symbol.
590
Robert Schuppenies14646332008-08-10 11:01:53 +0000591- Issue #1342811: Fix leak in Tkinter.Menu.delete. Commands associated to
592 menu entries were not deleted.
593
Brett Cannon83e81842008-08-09 23:30:55 +0000594- Copied the implementation of reduce() to _functools.reduce() to have a
595 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
596
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +0000597- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise
598 a MemoryError rather than silently stop the iteration.
599
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +0000600- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"
601 to _sre.compile() will now be rejected. This should not affect anybody
602 since the re.compile() function never generates invalid re-bytecode.
603
Skip Montanaroa032bf42008-08-08 22:52:51 +0000604- Issue #3436: Make csv.DictReader's fieldnames attribute a property so that
605 upon first access it can be automatically initialized from the csv file if
606 it wasn't initialized during instantiation.
607
Brett Cannon3aa2a492008-08-06 22:28:09 +0000608- Issue #2338: Create imp.reload() to help with transitioning to Python 3.0 as
609 the reload() built-in has been removed.
610
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +0000611- Changed code in the following modules/packages to remove warnings raised
Brett Cannonc1b76e42008-08-09 23:06:16 +0000612 while running under the ``-3`` flag: aifc, asynchat, asyncore, bdb, bsddb,

617 threading, tokenize, traceback, urlparse, wsgiref, xml, xmlrpclib.
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +0000618
Lars Gustäbel727bd0b2008-08-02 11:26:39 +0000619- Issue #3039: Fix tarfile.TarFileCompat.writestr() which always
620 raised an AttributeError.
621
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +0000622- Issue #2523: Fix quadratic behaviour when read()ing a binary file without
Antoine Pitroude781a42008-08-09 12:43:23 +0000623 asking for a specific length. This problem only affected files opened

681
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000682- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
683 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
684 an integer using operator.index().
685
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000686- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
687 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
688
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000689- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
690 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
691
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000692- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
693 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
694 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
695
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000696- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
697 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
698 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
699 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
700 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
701 level.
702
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000703- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
704 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
705 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
706 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
707 all imports from that module to fail.
708
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000709- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
710 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
711 new-style classes.
712
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000713- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is

716
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000717- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from

719 another thread's dictionary.
720
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000721- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
722 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
723 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
724 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
725 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
726 10, -1).
727
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000728- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000768- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
769 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000770 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000771 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001242- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
1243 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
1244 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
1245 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
1246 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
1247 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
1248 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support
1249 for the ``line`` argument will raise a DeprecationWarning.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001291- Issue #2513: distutils on Windows is now capable of cross-compiling
Mark Hammond495cf992008-04-07 01:53:39 +00001292 extension modules between 32 and 64 bit platforms. See the distutls
1293 build documentation for more information.
1294

Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001311
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001312- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1313 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1314 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1315 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1316 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1317 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1318 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1319 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1320 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1321 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1322 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1323 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1324 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1325 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1326 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1327 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1328 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1329 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1330 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1331 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1332
1333 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1334 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1335 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1336 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1337 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1338 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1339 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1340 access to the underlying socket used.
1341
1342 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1343 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1344 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001345
1346 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001347 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001348 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
1349 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
1350
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001351 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
1352 suite to run in parallel without issue.

1641 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1642 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1643 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1644 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).

Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +00001885- Bug #1683368: The object.__init__() and object.__new__() methods are
1886 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when
1887 either allows excess arguments is when it is not overridden and the

Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +00001890 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
