Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +00007What's New in Python 2.6 beta 3?
8================================
9
10*Release date: XX-Aug-2008*
11
12Core and Builtins
13-----------------
14
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +000015- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
16 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
17
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +000018- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
19 value again.
20
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +000021- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
22 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
23 and introducing s*.
24
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +000025- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
26 object was stored in the freelist.
27
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +000028- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
29 ValueError consistently across platforms.
30
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +000031- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
32 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
33 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
34
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +000035- Apply security patches from Apple.
36
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +000037- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
38 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
39
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +000040- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
41 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
42
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +000043- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
44 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
45 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
46
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +000047- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
48 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
49 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
50 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
51 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
52 failed have been fixed.
53
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +000054Library
55-------
56
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +000057- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
58
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +000059- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
60 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
61
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +000062- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
63 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
64 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
65
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +000066- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
67 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
68 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
69 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
70 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
71 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
72
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +000073- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
74 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
75
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +000076- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
77
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +000078- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.
79
Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +000080- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.
81
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +000082- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
83 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
84
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +000085- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
86 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
87
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +000088- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
89 in a redirect.
90
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +000091- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in
Brett Cannon721b1452008-08-16 22:00:27 +000092 BaseHTTPServer, cgi (and rfc822), httplib.
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +000093
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +000094- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash
95 after a 302 response in the case of not going through a proxy.
96
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +000097- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
98 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
99 regular expression.
100
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +0000101- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now
102 thread-safe.
103
Brett Cannonbf3157b2008-08-14 05:00:03 +0000104- Silence the DeprecationWarning of rfc822 when it is imported by mimetools
105 since mimetools itself is deprecated. Because modules are cached, all
106 subsequent imports of rfc822 will not raise a visible DeprecationWarning.
107
Antoine Pitrou9fcd4b32008-08-11 17:21:36 +0000108- Issue #3134: shutil referenced undefined WindowsError symbol.
109
Robert Schuppenies14646332008-08-10 11:01:53 +0000110- Issue #1342811: Fix leak in Tkinter.Menu.delete. Commands associated to
111 menu entries were not deleted.
112
Brett Cannon83e81842008-08-09 23:30:55 +0000113- Copied the implementation of reduce() to _functools.reduce() to have a
114 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
115
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +0000116- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise
117 a MemoryError rather than silently stop the iteration.
118
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +0000119- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"
120 to _sre.compile() will now be rejected. This should not affect anybody
121 since the re.compile() function never generates invalid re-bytecode.
122
Skip Montanaroa032bf42008-08-08 22:52:51 +0000123- Issue #3436: Make csv.DictReader's fieldnames attribute a property so that
124 upon first access it can be automatically initialized from the csv file if
125 it wasn't initialized during instantiation.
126
Brett Cannon3aa2a492008-08-06 22:28:09 +0000127- Issue #2338: Create imp.reload() to help with transitioning to Python 3.0 as
128 the reload() built-in has been removed.
129
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +0000130- Changed code in the following modules/packages to remove warnings raised
Brett Cannonc1b76e42008-08-09 23:06:16 +0000131 while running under the ``-3`` flag: aifc, asynchat, asyncore, bdb, bsddb,
Brett Cannon047e4a92008-08-17 04:16:04 +0000132 ConfigParser, cookielib, csv, difflib, distutils, DocXMLRPCServer, email,
133 filecmp, fileinput, inspect, logging, modulefinder, pdb, pickle, profile,
134 pstats, pydoc, re, rlcompleter, SimpleXMLRPCServer, shelve, socket,
135 subprocess, sqlite3, tarfile, Tkinter, test.test_support, textwrap,
136 threading, tokenize, traceback, urlparse, wsgiref, xml, xmlrpclib.
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +0000137
Lars Gustäbel727bd0b2008-08-02 11:26:39 +0000138- Issue #3039: Fix tarfile.TarFileCompat.writestr() which always
139 raised an AttributeError.
140
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +0000141- Issue #2523: Fix quadratic behaviour when read()ing a binary file without
Antoine Pitroude781a42008-08-09 12:43:23 +0000142 asking for a specific length. This problem only affected files opened
143 using the new "io" module, not the built-in open() function.
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +0000144
Mark Dickinsonfe84cce2008-07-27 06:39:07 +0000145- Issue #3449: Update decimal module to use most recent specification
146 (v. 1.68) and tests (v. 2.58) from IBM.
147
Skip Montanarof9ac43f2008-07-27 00:50:41 +0000148- Issue 3437: Bug fix in robotparser parsing of Allow: lines.
149
Raymond Hettinger8c664e82008-07-25 18:43:33 +0000150- Issue 1592: Improve error reporting when operations are attempted
151 on a closed shelf.
152
Georg Brandlf9efabb2008-07-23 15:16:45 +0000153- Deprecate the "ast" parser function aliases.
154
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000155- Issue #3120: On 64-bit Windows the subprocess module was truncating handles.
156
157- Issue #3303: Fix a crash in locale.strcoll() when calling it with
158 invalid arguments.
159
160- Issue #3302: Fix several crashes when calling locale's gettext functions
161 with None arguments.
162
163- Issue #3389: Allow resolving dotted names for handlers in logging
164 configuration files.
165
166- Deprecate the sunaudio module for removal in Python 3.0.
167
Antoine Pitrou5fdfa3e2008-07-25 19:42:26 +0000168- Issue #3394: zipfile.writestr sets external attributes when passed a
169 file name rather than a ZipInfo instance, so files are extracted with
170 mode 0600 rather than 000 under Unix.
171
Gregory P. Smitha36f8fe2008-08-04 00:13:29 +0000172- Issue #1857: subprocess.Popen.poll gained an additional _deadstate keyword
173 argument in python 2.5, this broke code that subclassed Popen to include its
174 own poll method. Fixed my moving _deadstate to an _internal_poll method.
175
Martin v. Löwis8dbf3642008-08-01 14:10:26 +0000176Build

180
Nick Coghlan2a0c2b12008-08-04 12:47:17 +0000181Documentation
182-------------
183
Nick Coghlan6e8fef02008-08-18 13:14:22 +0000184- Issue #2235: the C API function PyObject_HashNotImplemented and its
185 interaction with the tp_hash slot (added in 2.6b2) are now documented
186
Nick Coghlan2a0c2b12008-08-04 12:47:17 +0000187- Issue #643841: The language reference now provides more detailed
188 coverage of the lookup process for special methods. The disclaimers
189 regarding lack of coverage of new-style classes have also been
190 removed, since the coverage is now fairly reasonable.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000196*Release date: 17-Jul-2008*
197
Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +0000198Core and Builtins
199-----------------
200
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000201- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
202 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
203 an integer using operator.index().
204
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000205- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
206 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
207
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000208- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
209 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
210
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000211- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
212 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
213 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
214
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000215- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
216 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
217 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
218 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
219 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
220 level.
221
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000222- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
223 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
224 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
225 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
226 all imports from that module to fail.
227
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000228- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
229 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
230 new-style classes.
231
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000232- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
233 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
234 another file in sys.stdout.
235
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000236- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
237 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
238 another thread's dictionary.
239
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000240- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
241 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
242 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
243 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
244 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
245 10, -1).
246
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000247- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
248 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
249 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000250
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000251- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
252 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into
253 ClearFreeList apis and calls them via gc.collect().
Gregory P. Smith2fe77062008-07-06 03:35:58 +0000254
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000255Library
256-------
257
Thomas Heller57adf222008-08-14 19:10:48 +0000258- Issue #3554: ctypes.string_at and ctypes.wstring_at did call Python
259 api functions without holding the GIL, which could lead to a fatal
260 error when they failed.
261
Martin v. Löwisaabf4042008-08-02 07:20:25 +0000262- Issue #799428: Fix Tkinter.Misc._nametowidget to unwrap Tcl command objects.
263
Jesse Noller7fb96402008-07-17 21:01:05 +0000264- Issue #3395: fix reference in test_multiprocessing to old debugInfo method
265
Georg Brandla24869a2008-07-16 22:33:18 +0000266- Issue #3312: Fix two crashes in sqlite3.
267

269
Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +0000270- Issue #3125: Remove copy_reg in multiprocessing and replace it with
271 ForkingPickler.register() to resolve conflict with ctypes.
272
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000273- Issue #3090: Fixed ARCHFLAGS parsing on OS/X
Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +0000274
Thomas Heller880f5292008-07-15 19:39:38 +0000275- Issue #3313: Fixed a crash when a failed dlopen() call does not set
276 a valid dlerror() message.
277
Thomas Heller2bad6572008-07-15 17:19:50 +0000278- Issue #3258: Fixed a crash when a ctypes POINTER type to an
279 incomplete structure was created.
280
Brett Cannon3d0b9f02008-07-13 01:15:07 +0000281- Issue #3339: dummy_thread.acquire() should not return None.
282
Raymond Hettingerb01713e2008-07-10 14:34:57 +0000283- Issue #3285: Fractions from_float() and from_decimal() accept Integral arguments.
284
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000285- Issue #3301: Bisect module behaved badly when lo was negative.
Raymond Hettinger3cd1e422008-07-10 14:03:19 +0000286
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000287- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
288 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000289 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000290 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
291 merged into trunk.
292
Georg Brandle78fbcc2008-07-05 10:13:36 +0000293- Issue #2663: add filtering capability to shutil.copytree().
294

296
297- Issue #1526: Allow more than 64k files to be added to Zip64 file.
298
299- Issue #1746: Correct handling of zipfile archive comments (previously
300 archives with comments over 4k were flagged as invalid). Allow writing
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000301 Zip files with archives by setting the 'comment' attribute of a ZipFile.
Martin v. Löwis8c436412008-07-03 12:51:14 +0000302
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000303- Issue #449227: The rlcompleter module now adds "(" to callable objects

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000759- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
760 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
761 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
762 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
763 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
764 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
765 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support
766 for the ``line`` argument will raise a DeprecationWarning.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000829- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
830 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
831 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
832 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
833 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
834 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
835 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
836 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
837 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
838 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
839 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
840 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
841 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
842 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
843 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
844 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
845 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
846 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
847 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
848 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
849
850 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
851 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
852 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
853 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
854 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
855 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
856 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
857 access to the underlying socket used.
858
859 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
860 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
861 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000862
863 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000864 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,

1149 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1150 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1151 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1152 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1153 module is:
1154 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1155
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001156- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1157 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1158 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1159 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1160 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1161 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1162
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001163- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new

Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +00001402- Bug #1683368: The object.__init__() and object.__new__() methods are
1403 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when
1404 either allows excess arguments is when it is not overridden and the
1405 other one is. For backwards compatibility, when both are
1406 overridden, it is a deprecation warning (for now; maybe a Py3k
Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +00001407 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
1408 as supported by type.__new__().

1412 to the __float__() method. Therefore, the functions in the cmath
1413 module now can operate on objects that define a __complex__()
