Amaury Forgeot d'Arc8432d862008-03-28 20:45:42 +000015- The compilation of a class nested in another class used to leak one
16 reference on the outer class name.
17
Amaury Forgeot d'Arca79e0502008-03-24 21:16:28 +000018- Issue #1477: With narrow Unicode builds, the unicode escape sequence
19 \Uxxxxxxxx did not accept values outside the Basic Multilingual Plane. This
20 affected raw unicode literals and the 'raw-unicode-escape' codec. Now
21 UTF-16 surrogates are generated in this case, like normal unicode literals
22 and the 'unicode-escape' codec.
23
Neal Norwitzb3635f92008-03-18 04:17:36 +000024- Issue #2321: use pymalloc for unicode object string data to reduce
25 memory usage in some circumstances.
Andrew M. Kuchlingbe0adfc2008-02-23 17:18:19 +000026

32
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc198e3532008-03-27 23:41:59 +000033- Issue #2495: tokenize.untokenize now inserts a space between two consecutive

35 incorrect python code.
36
Mark Dickinsonbfdbfd42008-03-25 18:58:13 +000037- Issue #2482: Make sure that the coefficient of a Decimal is always
38 stored as a str instance, not as a unicode instance. This ensures
39 that str(Decimal) is always an instance of str. This fixes a
40 regression from Python 2.5.1 to Python 2.5.2.

1080
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +00001081- Unicode objects will no longer raise an exception when being
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001082 compared equal or unequal to a string and a UnicodeDecodeError
1083 exception occurs, e.g. as result of a decoding failure.
Neal Norwitz56423e52006-08-13 18:11:08 +00001084
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +00001085 Instead, the equal (==) and unequal (!=) comparison operators will
1086 now issue a UnicodeWarning and interpret the two objects as
1087 unequal. The UnicodeWarning can be filtered as desired using
1088 the warning framework, e.g. silenced completely, turned into an
1089 exception, logged, etc.
1090
1091 Note that compare operators other than equal and unequal will still
1092 raise UnicodeDecodeError exceptions as they've always done.
Neal Norwitz8a87f5d2006-08-12 17:03:09 +00001093
Marc-André Lemburg757ea272006-08-14 11:44:34 +00001094- Fix segfault when doing string formatting on subclasses of long.

1099- Fix bug related to __len__ functions returning negative values with
1100 classic classes.
1101
1102- Patch #1538606, Fix __index__() clipping. There were some problems
1103 discovered with the API and how integers that didn't fit into Py_ssize_t
1104 were handled. This patch attempts to provide enough alternatives
1105 to effectively use __index__.
1106
Martin v. Löwisab2f8f72006-08-09 07:57:39 +00001107- Bug #1536021: __hash__ may now return long int; the final hash
1108 value is obtained by invoking hash on the long int.
1109

1113 sys.stdin is closed.
1114
Thomas Heller74d36f02006-08-04 18:17:40 +00001115- On Windows, the PyErr_Warn function is now exported from
1116 the Python dll again.
1117
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +00001118- Bug #1191458: tracing over for loops now produces a line event
1119 on each iteration. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc
1120 magic number. This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5c1
1121 will be regenerated.
1122
Neal Norwitz0cbd8052006-08-04 05:09:28 +00001123- Bug #1333982: string/number constants were inappropriately stored
1124 in the byte code and co_consts even if they were not used, ie
1125 immediately popped off the stack.
1126
Georg Brandle9462c72006-08-04 18:03:37 +00001127- Fixed a reference-counting problem in property().

1134 generated for generator expressions.
1135
Marc-André Lemburg574cfea2006-08-16 16:11:01 +00001136- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0. The change to
1137 keep it programmatically in sync with the Python version running
1138 the code (introduced in 2.5b3) has been reverted. It will continue
1139 to be maintained manually as static string literal.
1140
Andrew M. Kuchlingc13324e2006-08-16 17:11:18 +00001141- If the Python part of a ctypes callback function returns None,
Thomas Hellerb4a0cf12006-08-16 15:10:12 +00001142 and this cannot be converted to the required C type, an exception is
1143 printed with PyErr_WriteUnraisable. Before this change, the C
Andrew M. Kuchlingc13324e2006-08-16 17:11:18 +00001144 callback returned arbitrary values to the calling code.

1148
Tim Peterscbdd3502006-09-05 01:47:53 +00001149- uuid.UUID now has a bytes_le attribute. This returns the UUID in
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001150 little-endian byte order for Windows. In addition, uuid.py gained some
Anthony Baxter58179592006-08-16 13:08:25 +00001151 workarounds for clocks with low resolution, to stop the code yielding
1152 duplicate UUIDs.
1153
Kurt B. Kaiserd112bc72006-08-16 05:01:42 +00001154- Patch #1540892: site.py Quitter() class attempts to close sys.stdin
1155 before raising SystemExit, allowing IDLE to honor quit() and exit().

1245
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001246- _PyWeakref_GetWeakrefCount() now returns a Py_ssize_t; it previously

Neal Norwitzf71ec5a2006-07-30 06:57:04 +00001249- Bug #1515471: string.replace() accepts character buffers again.
1250
Neal Norwitz07aadb12006-07-30 06:55:48 +00001251- Add PyErr_WarnEx() so C code can pass the stacklevel to warnings.warn().
1252 This provides the proper warning for struct.pack().

1257
Phillip J. Ebyf7575d02006-07-28 21:12:07 +00001258- Bug #1529871: The speed enhancement patch #921466 broke Python's compliance
1259 with PEP 302. This was fixed by adding an ``imp.NullImporter`` type that is
1260 used in ``sys.path_importer_cache`` to cache non-directory paths and avoid
1261 excessive filesystem operations during imports.
1262
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +00001263- Bug #1521947: When checking for overflow, ``PyOS_strtol()`` used some
1264 operations on signed longs that are formally undefined by C.
1265 Unfortunately, at least one compiler now cares about that, so complicated
1266 the code to make that compiler happy again.

1309
Tim Peterscbdd3502006-09-05 01:47:53 +00001310- The renaming of the xml package to xmlcore, and the import hackery done

1316
Tim Peters6f681472006-07-27 23:44:37 +00001317- Bug #1529297: The rewrite of doctest for Python 2.4 unintentionally
1318 lost that tests are sorted by name before being run. This rarely
1319 matters for well-written tests, but can create baffling symptoms if
1320 side effects from one test to the next affect outcomes. ``DocTestFinder``
1321 has been changed to sort the list of tests it returns.
1322
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001323- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0, and is now kept

Martin v. Löwis426f4a12006-07-18 17:46:31 +00001341- Patch #1524429: Use repr() instead of backticks in Tkinter again.
1342
Brett Cannoncaebe222006-07-18 04:41:36 +00001343- Bug #1520914: Change time.strftime() to accept a zero for any position in its
1344 argument tuple. For arguments where zero is illegal, the value is forced to
1345 the minimum value that is correct. This is to support an undocumented but
1346 common way people used to fill in inconsequential information in the time
1347 tuple pre-2.4.
1348
Bob Ippolito5ea4bf12006-07-15 16:53:15 +00001349- Patch #1220874: Update the binhex module for Mach-O.
1350
Barry Warsawb110bad2006-07-21 14:51:07 +00001351- The email package has improved RFC 2231 support, specifically for
1352 recognizing the difference between encoded (name*0*=<blah>) and non-encoded
1353 (name*0=<blah>) parameter continuations. This may change the types of
1354 values returned from email.message.Message.get_param() and friends.
1355 Specifically in some cases where non-encoded continuations were used,
1356 get_param() used to return a 3-tuple of (None, None, string) whereas now it
1357 will just return the string (since non-encoded continuations don't have
1358 charset and language parts).
1359
1360 Also, whereas % values were decoded in all parameter continuations, they are
1361 now only decoded in encoded parameter parts.
1362
Ronald Oussoren3075e162006-07-25 20:28:55 +00001363- Bug #1517990: IDLE keybindings on MacOS X now work correctly

1365- Bug #1517996: IDLE now longer shows the default Tk menu when a
1366 path browser, class browser or debugger is the frontmost window on MacOS X
1367
Barry Warsaw00decd72006-07-27 23:43:15 +00001368- Patch #1520294: Support for getset and member descriptors in types.py,
1369 inspect.py, and pydoc.py. Specifically, this allows for querying the type
1370 of an object against these built-in types and more importantly, for getting

Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +00001473- New function ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dict mapping thread
1474 id to topmost thread stack frame. This is for expert use, and is
1475 especially useful for debugging application deadlocks. The functionality
1476 was previously available in Fazal Majid's ``threadframe`` extension
1477 module, but it wasn't possible to do this in a wholly threadsafe way from
1478 an extension.

1617-----------------
1618
Georg Brandla56b9152006-06-19 06:35:54 +00001619- Patch #1507676: Error messages returned by invalid abstract object operations
1620 (such as iterating over an integer) have been improved and now include the
1621 type of the offending object to help with debugging.
1622
Brett Cannonea3912b2006-06-13 21:46:41 +00001623- Bug #992017: A classic class that defined a __coerce__() method that returned
1624 its arguments swapped would infinitely recurse and segfault the interpreter.
1625
Neal Norwitz909eb122006-06-12 02:13:21 +00001626- Fix the socket tests so they can be run concurrently.
1627
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +00001628- Removed 5 integers from C frame objects (PyFrameObject).
Vinay Sajip28e57612006-07-01 10:45:20 +00001629 f_nlocals, f_ncells, f_nfreevars, f_stack_size, f_restricted.
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +00001630
Brett Cannon22565aa2006-06-09 22:31:23 +00001631- Bug #532646: object.__call__() will continue looking for the __call__
1632 attribute on objects until one without one is found. This leads to recursion
1633 when you take a class and set its __call__ attribute to an instance of the
1634 class. Originally fixed for classic classes, but this fix is for new-style.
1635 Removes the infinite_rec_3 crasher.
1636
Georg Brandl24250812006-06-09 18:45:48 +00001637- The string and unicode methods startswith() and endswith() now accept
1638 a tuple of prefixes/suffixes to look for. Implements RFE #1491485.
1639
Brett Cannonde3b0522006-06-08 17:00:45 +00001640- Buffer objects, at the C level, never used the char buffer
1641 implementation even when the char buffer for the wrapped object was
1642 explicitly requested (originally returned the read or write buffer).
1643 Now a TypeError is raised if the char buffer is not present but is
1644 requested.
1645
Georg Brandlddbaa662006-06-04 21:56:52 +00001646- Patch #1346214: Statements like "if 0: suite" are now again optimized
1647 away like they were in Python 2.4.
1648
Georg Brandlb7c8f542006-05-27 12:30:25 +00001649- Builtin exceptions are now full-blown new-style classes instead of
1650 instances pretending to be classes, which speeds up exception handling
1651 by about 80% in comparison to 2.5a2.
1652
Martin v. Löwisd004fc82006-05-27 08:36:52 +00001653- Patch #1494554: Update unicodedata.numeric and unicode.isnumeric to
1654 Unicode 4.1.
1655
Georg Brandlf4ef1162006-05-26 18:03:31 +00001656- Patch #921466: sys.path_importer_cache is now used to cache valid and
1657 invalid file paths for the built-in import machinery which leads to
1658 fewer open calls on startup.
1659
Tim Peters696cf432006-05-24 21:10:40 +00001660- Patch #1442927: ``long(str, base)`` is now up to 6x faster for non-power-
1661 of-2 bases. The largest speedup is for inputs with about 1000 decimal
1662 digits. Conversion from non-power-of-2 bases remains quadratic-time in
1663 the number of input digits (it was and remains linear-time for bases
1664 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32).
1665
Tim Petersb713ec22006-05-23 18:45:30 +00001666- Bug #1334662: ``int(string, base)`` could deliver a wrong answer
1667 when ``base`` was not 2, 4, 8, 10, 16 or 32, and ``string`` represented
1668 an integer close to ``sys.maxint``. This was repaired by patch
1669 #1335972, which also gives a nice speedup.
1670
Richard Jonescebbefc2006-05-23 18:28:17 +00001671- Patch #1337051: reduced size of frame objects.
1672
1673- PyErr_NewException now accepts a tuple of base classes as its
1674 "base" parameter.
1675
Richard Jones7c88dcc2006-05-23 10:37:38 +00001676- Patch #876206: function call speedup by retaining allocated frame
1677 objects.
1678
Georg Brandl7b90e162006-05-18 07:01:27 +00001679- Bug #1462152: file() now checks more thoroughly for invalid mode
1680 strings and removes a possible "U" before passing the mode to the
1681 C library function.
1682
Neal Norwitz1004a532006-05-15 07:17:23 +00001683- Patch #1488312, Fix memory alignment problem on SPARC in unicode
1684
Neal Norwitz373f0a72006-05-15 07:04:36 +00001685- Bug #1487966: Fix SystemError with conditional expression in assignment
1686
Martin v. Löwis879768d2006-05-11 13:28:43 +00001687- WindowsError now has two error code attributes: errno, which carries
1688 the error values from errno.h, and winerror, which carries the error
1689 values from winerror.h. Previous versions put the winerror.h values
1690 (from GetLastError()) into the errno attribute.
1691
Martin v. Löwis77736712006-05-04 05:51:03 +00001692- Patch #1475845: Raise IndentationError for unexpected indent.
1693
Neal Norwitzc4edb0e2006-05-02 04:43:14 +00001694- Patch #1479181: split open() and file() from being aliases for each other.
1695
Tim Peters44bd9862006-06-01 13:49:23 +00001696- Patch #1497053 & bug #1275608: Exceptions occurring in ``__eq__()``
1697 methods were always silently ignored by dictionaries when comparing keys.
1698 They are now passed through (except when using the C API function
1699 ``PyDict_GetItem()``, whose semantics did not change).
1700
1701- Bug #1456209: In some obscure cases it was possible for a class with a
1702 custom ``__eq__()`` method to confuse dict internals when class instances
1703 were used as a dict's keys and the ``__eq__()`` method mutated the dict.
1704 No, you don't have any code that did this ;-)

1712
Brett Cannon6ee7d012006-06-08 16:23:04 +00001713- Change binascii.hexlify to accept a read-only buffer instead of only a char
1714 buffer and actually follow its documentation.
1715

1717
Nick Coghlanc649ec52006-05-29 12:43:05 +00001718- Patch #1478788 (modified version): The functional extension module has
1719 been renamed to _functools and a functools Python wrapper module added.
1720 This provides a home for additional function related utilities that are
1721 not specifically about functional programming. See PEP 309.

1734 (up to the system limit of 32K characters).
1735
1736- Use Win32 API to implement os.{access,chdir,chmod,mkdir,remove,rename,rmdir,utime}.
1737 As a result, these functions now raise WindowsError instead of OSError.
1738
Tim Peters7a822da2006-05-25 21:50:17 +00001739- ``time.clock()`` on Win64 should use the high-performance Windows
1740 ``QueryPerformanceCounter()`` now (as was already the case on 32-bit
1741 Windows platforms).
1742
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +00001743- Calling Tk_Init twice is refused if the first call failed as that

1801
Tim Peters43898b42006-06-14 04:09:25 +00001802- ``difflib``'s ``SequenceMatcher.get_matching_blocks()`` was changed to
1803 guarantee that adjacent triples in the return list always describe
1804 non-adjacent blocks. Previously, a pair of matching blocks could end
1805 up being described by multiple adjacent triples that formed a partition
1806 of the matching pair.

1826 for lookup.
1827
Tim Petersd609b1a2006-06-02 23:22:51 +00001828- The functions in the ``pprint`` module now sort dictionaries by key
1829 before computing the display. Before 2.5, ``pprint`` sorted a dictionary
1830 if and only if its display required more than one line, although that
1831 wasn't documented. The new behavior increases predictability; e.g.,
1832 using ``pprint.pprint(a_dict)`` in a doctest is now reliable.

1910-----------------
1911
Thomas Heller1b046642006-04-18 18:51:06 +00001912- Bug #1465834: 'bdist_wininst preinstall script support' was fixed
1913 by converting these apis from macros into exported functions again:
1914
1915 PyParser_SimpleParseFile PyParser_SimpleParseString PyRun_AnyFile
1916 PyRun_AnyFileEx PyRun_AnyFileFlags PyRun_File PyRun_FileEx

1920
Martin v. Löwis45294a92006-04-18 06:24:08 +00001921- Under COUNT_ALLOCS, types are not necessarily immortal anymore.
1922
Martin v. Löwis19ab6c92006-04-16 18:55:50 +00001923- All uses of PyStructSequence_InitType have been changed to initialize
1924 the type objects only once, even if the interpreter is initialized
1925 multiple times.
1926
Neal Norwitz61546162006-04-14 05:20:28 +00001927- Bug #1454485, array.array('u') could crash the interpreter. This was
1928 due to PyArgs_ParseTuple(args, 'u#', ...) trying to convert buffers (strings)
1929 to unicode when it didn't make sense. 'u#' now requires a unicode string.
1930
1931- Py_UNICODE is unsigned. It was always documented as unsigned, but
1932 due to a bug had a signed value in previous versions.
1933
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001934- Patch #837242: ``id()`` of any Python object always gives a positive
1935 number now, which might be a long integer. ``PyLong_FromVoidPtr`` and
1936 ``PyLong_AsVoidPtr`` have been changed accordingly. Note that it has
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001937 never been correct to implement a ``__hash()__`` method that returns the
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001938 ``id()`` of an object:
Martin v. Löwis0bc2ab92006-04-10 20:28:17 +00001939
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001940 def __hash__(self):
1941 return id(self) # WRONG
1942
1943 because a hash result must be a (short) Python int but it was always
1944 possible for ``id()`` to return a Python long. However, because ``id()``
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001945 could return negative values before, on a 32-bit box an ``id()`` result
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001946 was always usable as a hash value before this patch. That's no longer
1947 necessarily so.
1948
1949- Python on OS X 10.3 and above now uses dlopen() (via dynload_shlib.c)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001950 to load extension modules and now provides the dl module. As a result,
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001951 sys.setdlopenflags() now works correctly on these systems. (SF patch
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001952 #1454844)
1953
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00001954- Patch #1463867: enhanced garbage collection to allow cleanup of cycles
1955 involving generators that have paused outside of any ``try`` or ``with``
1956 blocks. (In 2.5a1, a paused generator that was part of a reference
1957 cycle could not be garbage collected, regardless of whether it was
1958 paused in a ``try`` or ``with`` block.)

Nick Coghlan27ec1a72006-04-24 04:32:47 +00002072- test_cmd_line now checks operation of the -m and -c command switches
2073
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00002074- The test_contextlib test in 2.5a1 wasn't actually run unless you ran
2075 it separately and by hand. It also wasn't cleaning up its changes to
2076 the current Decimal context.
2077
Thomas Woutersabd08882006-04-26 15:53:30 +00002078- regrtest.py now has a -M option to run tests that test the new limits of
2079 containers, on 64-bit architectures. Running these tests is only sensible
2080 on 64-bit machines with more than two gigabytes of memory. The argument
2081 passed is the maximum amount of memory for the tests to use.

2109
Nick Coghlan43832302006-04-23 17:04:07 +00002110- PEP 338: -m command line switch now delegates to runpy.run_module
2111 allowing it to support modules in packages and zipfiles
2112
Martin v. Löwisc661b882006-04-20 04:54:23 +00002113- On Windows, .DLL is not an accepted file name extension for
2114 extension modules anymore; extensions are only found if they
2115 end in .PYD.
2116
Martin v. Löwisea62d252006-04-03 10:56:49 +00002117- Bug #1421664: sys.stderr.encoding is now set to the same value as
2118 sys.stdout.encoding.
2119
Neal Norwitz92e212f2006-04-03 04:48:37 +00002120- __import__ accepts keyword arguments.
2121
Georg Brandlccadf842006-03-31 18:54:53 +00002122- Patch #1460496: round() now accepts keyword arguments.
2123
Anthony Baxter262c00a2006-03-30 10:53:17 +00002124- Fixed bug #1459029 - unicode reprs were double-escaped.
2125
Hye-Shik Changd478f342006-03-23 12:32:36 +00002126- Patch #1396919: The system scope threads are reenabled on FreeBSD
2127 5.4 and later versions.
2128
Neal Norwitze98ccf62006-03-23 05:39:47 +00002129- Bug #1115379: Compiling a Unicode string with an encoding declaration
2130 now gives a SyntaxError.
2131
Georg Brandlabd1ff82006-03-18 07:59:59 +00002132- Previously, Python code had no easy way to access the contents of a
2133 cell object. Now, a ``cell_contents`` attribute has been added
2134 (closes patch #1170323).
2135
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00002136- Patch #1123430: Python's small-object allocator now returns an arena to
2137 the system ``free()`` when all memory within an arena becomes unused
2138 again. Prior to Python 2.5, arenas (256KB chunks of memory) were never
2139 freed. Some applications will see a drop in virtual memory size now,
2140 especially long-running applications that, from time to time, temporarily
2141 use a large number of small objects. Note that when Python returns an
2142 arena to the platform C's ``free()``, there's no guarantee that the
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00002143 platform C library will in turn return that memory to the operating system.
2144 The effect of the patch is to stop making that impossible, and in tests it
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00002145 appears to be effective at least on Microsoft C and gcc-based systems.
2146 Thanks to Evan Jones for hard work and patience.
2147
Georg Brandl533ff6f2006-03-08 18:09:27 +00002148- Patch #1434038: property() now uses the getter's docstring if there is
2149 no "doc" argument given. This makes it possible to legitimately use
2150 property() as a decorator to produce a read-only property.
2151
Guido van Rossum9aa37ab2006-03-07 18:54:08 +00002152- PEP 357, patch 1436368: add an __index__ method to int/long and a matching
2153 nb_index slot to the PyNumberMethods struct. The slot is consulted instead
2154 of requiring an int or long in slicing and a few other contexts, enabling
2155 other objects (e.g. Numeric Python's integers) to be used as slice indices.
2156
Neal Norwitz995acdf2006-03-07 05:01:00 +00002157- Fixed various bugs reported by Coverity's Prevent tool.
2158
Brett Cannonbf364092006-03-01 04:25:17 +00002159- PEP 352, patch #1104669: Make exceptions new-style objects. Introduced the
2160 new exception base class, BaseException, which has a new message attribute.
2161 KeyboardInterrupt and SystemExit to directly inherit from BaseException now.
2162 Raising a string exception now raises a DeprecationWarning.
2163
Thomas Woutersfb609f42006-02-28 16:37:25 +00002164- Patch #1438387, PEP 328: relative and absolute imports. Imports can now be
2165 explicitly relative, using 'from .module import name' to mean 'from the same
2166 package as this module is in. Imports without dots still default to the
2167 old relative-then-absolute, unless 'from __future__ import
2168 absolute_import' is used.
2169
Brett Cannona7446e32006-02-27 23:39:10 +00002170- Properly check if 'warnings' raises an exception (usually when a filter set
2171 to "error" is triggered) when raising a warning for raising string
2172 exceptions.
2173
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002174- CO_GENERATOR_ALLOWED is no longer defined. This behavior is the default.
Neal Norwitz0023a2f2006-02-27 23:24:48 +00002175 The name was removed from Include/code.h.
2176
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002177- PEP 308: conditional expressions were added: (x if cond else y).
Neal Norwitzeb651252006-02-27 16:47:12 +00002178
Guido van Rossum1968ad32006-02-25 22:38:04 +00002179- Patch 1433928:
2180 - The copy module now "copies" function objects (as atomic objects).
2181 - dict.__getitem__ now looks for a __missing__ hook before raising
2182 KeyError.
2183
Tim Peters84ef21c2006-02-28 20:39:06 +00002184- PEP 343: with statement implemented. Needs ``from __future__ import
2185 with_statement``. Use of 'with' as a variable will generate a warning.
2186 Use of 'as' as a variable will also generate a warning (unless it's
Neal Norwitz055ec242006-02-28 20:06:49 +00002187 part of an import statement).
Guido van Rossum1a5e21e2006-02-28 21:57:43 +00002188 The following objects have __context__ methods:
2189 - The built-in file type.
2190 - The thread.LockType type.
2191 - The following types defined by the threading module:
2192 Lock, RLock, Condition, Semaphore, BoundedSemaphore.
2193 - The decimal.Context class.
Guido van Rossumc2e20742006-02-27 22:32:47 +00002194
Marc-André Lemburgfe4b34c2006-02-19 15:22:22 +00002195- Fix the encodings package codec search function to only search
2196 inside its own package. Fixes problem reported in patch #1433198.
2197
2198 Note: Codec packages should implement and register their own
2199 codec search function. PEP 100 has the details.
2200
Tim Peters9ea89d22006-06-04 03:26:02 +00002201- PEP 353: Using ``Py_ssize_t`` as the index type.
2202
2203- ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` builds now add ``4*sizeof(size_t)`` bytes of debugging
2204 info to each allocated block, since the ``Py_ssize_t`` changes (PEP 353)
2205 now allow Python to make use of memory blocks exceeding 2**32 bytes for
2206 some purposes on 64-bit boxes. A ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` build was limited
2207 to 4-byte allocations before.
Martin v. Löwis18e16552006-02-15 17:27:45 +00002208
Neal Norwitzfc76d632006-01-10 06:03:13 +00002209- Patch #1400181, fix unicode string formatting to not use the locale.
2210 This is how string objects work. u'%f' could use , instead of .
2211 for the decimal point. Now both strings and unicode always use periods.
2212
Neal Norwitz671b9e32006-01-09 07:07:12 +00002213- Bug #1244610, #1392915, fix build problem on OpenBSD 3.7 and 3.8.
2214 configure would break checking curses.h.
2215
Georg Brandlcd4d1e82005-12-27 17:37:07 +00002216- Bug #959576: The pwd module is now builtin. This allows Python to be
2217 built on UNIX platforms without $HOME set.
2218
Neal Norwitzc10978f2005-12-19 06:07:16 +00002219- Bug #1072182, fix some potential problems if characters are signed.
2220
Neal Norwitz5d0ad502005-12-19 04:27:42 +00002221- Bug #889500, fix line number on SyntaxWarning for global declarations.
2222
Neal Norwitzdb83eb32005-12-18 05:29:30 +00002223- Bug #1378022, UTF-8 files with a leading BOM crashed the interpreter.
2224
Neal Norwitze7214a12005-12-18 05:03:17 +00002225- Support for converting hex strings to floats no longer works.
2226 This was not portable. float('0x3') now raises a ValueError.
2227
Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00002228- Patch #1382163: Expose Subversion revision number to Python. New C API
Barry Warsawd3c38ff2006-03-07 09:46:03 +00002229 function Py_GetBuildNumber(). New attribute sys.subversion. Build number
Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00002230 is now displayed in interactive prompt banner.
2231
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00002232- Implementation of PEP 341 - Unification of try/except and try/finally.
2233 "except" clauses can now be written together with a "finally" clause in
Neal Norwitz11ca77e2005-12-17 22:24:12 +00002234 one try statement instead of two nested ones. Patch #1355913.
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00002235
Hye-Shik Chang835b2432005-12-17 04:38:31 +00002236- Bug #1379994: Builtin unicode_escape and raw_unicode_escape codec
2237 now encodes backslash correctly.
2238
Martin v. Löwisb45b3152005-11-28 17:34:23 +00002239- Patch #1350409: Work around signal handling bug in Visual Studio 2005.
2240
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002241- Bug #1281408: Py_BuildValue now works correctly even with unsigned longs
Georg Brandlf06e30a2005-11-24 15:37:42 +00002242 and long longs.
2243
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00002244- SF Bug #1350188, "setdlopenflags" leads to crash upon "import"
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00002245 It was possible for dlerror() to return a NULL pointer, so
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002246 it will now use a default error message in this case.
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00002247
Marc-André Lemburga5bafc42005-10-23 13:43:40 +00002248- Replaced most Unicode charmap codecs with new ones using the
2249 new Unicode translate string feature in the builtin charmap
2250 codec; the codecs were created from the mapping tables available
2251 at ftp.unicode.org and contain a few updates (e.g. the Mac OS
2252 encodings now include a mapping for the Apple logo)
2253
Tim Peterse3547fd2005-12-16 23:13:57 +00002254- Added a few more codecs for Mac OS encodings
Marc-André Lemburga5bafc42005-10-23 13:43:40 +00002255
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002256- Sped up some Unicode operations.
Neal Norwitzfed9b3e2005-10-21 06:32:02 +00002257

2273
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002274- All iterators now have a Boolean value of True. Formerly, some iterators
Raymond Hettinger6b27cda2005-09-24 21:23:05 +00002275 supported a __len__() method which evaluated to False when the iterator
2276 was empty.
2277
Guido van Rossum630db602005-09-20 18:49:54 +00002278- On 64-bit platforms, when __len__() returns a value that cannot be
2279 represented as a C int, raise OverflowError.
2280
Skip Montanarof8948ca2005-09-19 03:54:46 +00002281- test__locale is skipped on OS X < 10.4 (only partial locale support is
Walter Dörwald6611a8b2005-10-09 19:28:35 +00002282 present).
Skip Montanarof8948ca2005-09-19 03:54:46 +00002283
Georg Brandl80bbf3f2005-09-14 19:38:29 +00002284- SF bug #893549: parsing keyword arguments was broken with a few format
2285 codes.
2286
Guido van Rossum8ee3e5a2005-09-14 18:09:42 +00002287- Changes donated by Elemental Security to make it work on AIX 5.3
2288 with IBM's 64-bit compiler (SF patch #1284289). This also closes SF
2289 bug #105470: test_pwd fails on 64bit system (Opteron).
2290
Guido van Rossum539c6622005-09-14 17:49:54 +00002291- Changes donated by Elemental Security to make it work on HP-UX 11 on
2292 Itanium2 with HP's 64-bit compiler (SF patch #1225212).
2293
Georg Brandl4550b8d2005-08-26 06:43:52 +00002294- Disallow keyword arguments for type constructors that don't use them
Georg Brandl02c42872005-08-26 06:42:30 +00002295 (fixes bug #1119418).
2296
Martin v. Löwisd35edda2005-08-24 08:39:24 +00002297- Forward UnicodeDecodeError into SyntaxError for source encoding errors.
2298
Barry Warsawe2eca0b2005-08-15 18:14:19 +00002299- SF bug #900092: When tracing (e.g. for hotshot), restore 'return' events for
2300 exceptions that cause a function to exit.
2301
Raymond Hettinger9f1a6792005-07-31 01:16:36 +00002302- The implementation of set() and frozenset() was revised to use its
2303 own internal data structure. Memory consumption is reduced by 1/3
2304 and there are modest speed-ups as well. The API is unchanged.
2305
Tim Petersde7990b2005-07-17 23:45:23 +00002306- SF bug #1238681: freed pointer is used in longobject.c:long_pow().
2307
Michael W. Hudson0edc7a02005-07-12 10:21:19 +00002308- SF bug #1229429: PyObject_CallMethod failed to decrement some
2309 reference counts in some error exit cases.
2310
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002311- SF bug #1185883: Python's small-object memory allocator took over
2312 a block managed by the platform C library whenever a realloc specified
2313 a small new size. However, there's no portable way to know then how
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002314 much of the address space following the pointer is valid, so there's no
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002315 portable way to copy data from the C-managed block into Python's
2316 small-object space without risking a memory fault. Python's small-object
2317 realloc now leaves such blocks under the control of the platform C
2318 realloc.
2319
Michael W. Hudsonb8963812005-07-05 15:21:58 +00002320- SF bug #1232517: An overflow error was not detected properly when
2321 attempting to convert a large float to an int in os.utime().
2322
Raymond Hettinger3296e692005-06-29 23:29:56 +00002323- SF bug #1224347: hex longs now print with lowercase letters just
2324 like their int counterparts.
2325
Michael W. Hudson188d4362005-06-20 16:52:57 +00002326- SF bug #1163563: the original fix for bug #1010677 ("thread Module
2327 Breaks PyGILState_Ensure()") broke badly in the case of multiple
2328 interpreter states; back out that fix and do a better job (see
2329 http://mail.python.org/pipermail/python-dev/2005-June/054258.html
2330 for a longer write-up of the problem).
2331
Michael W. Hudsondf888462005-06-03 14:41:55 +00002332- SF patch #1180995: marshal now uses a binary format by default when
2333 serializing floats.
2334
Michael W. Hudsonda85a902005-06-01 11:34:22 +00002335- SF patch #1181301: on platforms that appear to use IEEE 754 floats,
2336 the routines that promise to produce IEEE 754 binary representations
2337 of floats now simply copy bytes around.
2338
Skip Montanarobbf12ba2005-05-20 03:07:06 +00002339- bug #967182: disallow opening files with 'wU' or 'aU' as specified by PEP
2340 278.

Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00002342- patch #1109424: int, long, float, complex, and unicode now check for the
2343 proper magic slot for type conversions when subclassed. Previously the
2344 magic slot was ignored during conversion. Semantics now match the way
2345 subclasses of str always behaved. int/long/float, conversion of an instance
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00002346 to the base class has been moved to the proper nb_* magic slot and out of
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00002347 PyNumber_*().
Neal Norwitzcfba5f82006-04-25 05:05:03 +00002348 Thanks Walter Drwald.

Barry Warsawc8d907c2005-04-19 23:43:40 +00002350- Descriptors defined in C with a PyGetSetDef structure, where the setter is
2351 NULL, now raise an AttributeError when attempting to set or delete the
2352 attribute. Previously a TypeError was raised, but this was inconsistent
2353 with the equivalent pure-Python implementation.
2354
Michael W. Hudson774479c2005-04-18 08:46:17 +00002355- It is now safe to call PyGILState_Release() before
2356 PyEval_InitThreads() (note that if there is reason to believe there
2357 are multiple threads around you still must call PyEval_InitThreads()
2358 before using the Python API; this fix is for extension modules that
2359 have no way of knowing if Python is multi-threaded yet).
2360
Michael W. Hudsone3afc592005-04-07 10:11:19 +00002361- Typing Ctrl-C whilst raw_input() was waiting in a build with threads

2374 Patch #1176012 added support to the 'parser' module and 'compiler' package

2413 current thread state when the auto-GIL-state machinery knows about
2414 it (since the thread state is being deleted, continuing to remember it
2415 can't help, but can hurt if another thread happens to get created with
2416 the same thread id).

Georg Brandlc5e3d8a2006-07-17 13:26:33 +00002608- Patch #1388073: Numerous __-prefixed attributes of unittest.TestCase have
2609 been renamed to have only a single underscore prefix. This was done to
2610 make subclassing easier.
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002611
Nick Coghlan43832302006-04-23 17:04:07 +00002612- PEP 338: new module runpy defines a run_module function to support
2613 executing modules which provide access to source code or a code object
2614 via the PEP 302 import mechanisms.
2615
Anthony Baxter93f5b932006-04-03 08:05:07 +00002616- The email module's parsedate_tz function now sets the daylight savings
2617 flag to -1 (unknown) since it can't tell from the date whether it should

2625
Anthony Baxterc51ee692006-04-01 00:57:31 +00002626- Added the sqlite3 package. This is based on pysqlite2.1.3, and provides
Georg Brandl828fdef2006-04-01 08:59:03 +00002627 a DB-API interface in the standard library. You'll need sqlite 3.0.8 or
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00002628 later to build this - if you have an earlier version, the C extension
Anthony Baxterc51ee692006-04-01 00:57:31 +00002629 module will not be built.
2630
Tim Petersc17976e2006-04-01 00:26:53 +00002631- Bug #1460340: ``random.sample(dict)`` failed in various ways. Dicts
2632 aren't officially supported here, and trying to use them will probably
2633 raise an exception some day. But dicts have been allowed, and "mostly
2634 worked", so support for them won't go away without warning.
2635
Georg Brandl338ef7d2006-03-31 18:42:16 +00002636- Bug #1445068: getpass.getpass() can now be given an explicit stream

2649 processing all enqueued tasks. Patch #1455676.

2654
Barry Warsaw4d90bbd2006-03-22 02:45:50 +00002655- email 4.0 package now integrated. This is largely the same as the email 3.0
2656 package that was included in Python 2.3, except that PEP 8 module names are
2657 now used (e.g. mail.message instead of email.Message). The MIME classes
2658 have been moved to a subpackage (e.g. email.mime.text instead of
2659 email.MIMEText). The old names are still supported for now. Several
2660 deprecated Message methods have been removed and lots of bugs have been
2661 fixed. More details can be found in the email package documentation.
2662
Walter Dörwald40108c92006-03-27 08:15:44 +00002663- Patches #1436130/#1443155: codecs.lookup() now returns a CodecInfo object
2664 (a subclass of tuple) that provides incremental decoders and encoders
2665 (a way to use stateful codecs without the stream API). Python functions
2666 codecs.getincrementaldecoder() and codecs.getincrementalencoder() as well
2667 as C functions PyCodec_IncrementalEncoder() and PyCodec_IncrementalDecoder()
2668 have been added.

2671 a ValueError instead of a StopIteration now (like file and cString.String do).
2672 cStringIO.StringIO.isatty() will raise a ValueError now if close() has been
2673 called before (like file and StringIO.StringIO do).
Walter Dörwald197e8322006-03-15 22:13:13 +00002674

2754 is that SHA-256 is a good choice for the time being, but
2755 that research should continue, and other alternatives may

2872 them to PyPI.
2873
Raymond Hettinger267b8682005-03-27 10:47:39 +00002874- decimal operator and comparison methods now return NotImplemented
2875 instead of raising a TypeError when interacting with other types. This
2876 allows other classes to implement __radd__ style methods and have them
2877 work as expected.
2878
Raymond Hettingerbea3f6f2005-03-15 04:59:17 +00002879- Bug #1163325: Decimal infinities failed to hash. Attempting to

2918 disables recursive traversal through instance attributes, which can
2919 be exploited in various ways.
2920
Tim Peterse3547fd2005-12-16 23:13:57 +00002921- Bug #1222790: in SimpleXMLRPCServer, set the reuse-address and close-on-exec

2935
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002936- Enhancements to the csv module:
2937
2938 + Dialects are now validated by the underlying C code, better
Georg Brandl7eb4b7d2005-07-22 21:49:32 +00002939 reflecting its capabilities, and improving its compliance with
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002940 PEP 305.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002941 + Dialect parameter parsing has been re-implemented to improve error
2942 reporting.
2943 + quotechar=None and quoting=QUOTE_NONE now work the way PEP 305
2944 dictates.
2945 + the parser now removes the escapechar prefix from escaped characters.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002946 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the writer now tests for numeric
Andrew M. Kuchling6db67822006-04-18 14:04:57 +00002947 types, rather than any object that can be represented as a numeric.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002948 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the reader now casts unquoted fields
2949 to floats.
Andrew McNamaraf69d94f2005-01-13 11:30:54 +00002950 + reader now allows \r characters to be quoted (previously it only allowed
2951 \n to be quoted).
Andrew McNamarac89f2842005-01-12 07:44:42 +00002952 + writer doublequote handling improved.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002953 + Dialect classes passed to the module are no longer instantiated by
2954 the module before being parsed (the former validation scheme required
2955 this, but the mechanism was unreliable).
2956 + The dialect registry now contains instances of the internal
2957 C-coded dialect type, rather than references to python objects.
2958 + the internal c-coded dialect type is now immutable.
2959 + register_dialect now accepts the same keyword dialect specifications
2960 as the reader and writer, allowing the user to register dialects
2961 without first creating a dialect class.
2962 + a configurable limit to the size of parsed fields has been added -
2963 previously, an unmatched quote character could result in the entire
2964 file being read into the field buffer before an error was reported.
Andrew McNamara31d88962005-01-12 03:45:10 +00002965 + A new module method csv.field_size_limit() has been added that sets
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002966 the parser field size limit (returning the former limit). The initial
2967 limit is 128kB.
Andrew McNamara7f2053e2005-01-12 11:17:16 +00002968 + A line_num attribute has been added to the reader object, which tracks
2969 the number of lines read from the source iterator. This is not
2970 the same as the number of records returned, as records can span
2971 multiple lines.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002972 + reader and writer objects were not being registered with the cyclic-GC.
2973 This has been fixed.
2974
Brett Cannone6539c42005-01-08 02:43:53 +00002975- _DummyThread objects in the threading module now delete self.__block that is
2976 inherited from _Thread since it uses up a lock allocated by 'thread'. The
2977 lock primitives tend to be limited in number and thus should not be wasted on
2978 a _DummyThread object. Fixes bug #1089632.
2979
Raymond Hettinger97db05d2005-01-07 08:15:41 +00002980- The imghdr module now detects Exif files.
2981
Raymond Hettinger6065d322004-12-20 23:51:53 +00002982- StringIO.truncate() now correctly adjusts the size attribute.
2983 (Bug #951915).
2984
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00002985- locale.py now uses an updated locale alias table (built using
2986 Tools/i18n/makelocalealias.py, a tool to parse the X11 locale
2987 alias file); the encoding lookup was enhanced to use Python's
Andrew M. Kuchling88b85822005-08-23 00:57:07 +00002988 encoding alias table.
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00002989
Raymond Hettinger3557f422004-12-07 12:02:02 +00002990- moved deprecated modules to Lib/lib-old: whrandom, tzparse, statcache.
2991
Raymond Hettingera6b45cc2004-12-07 07:05:57 +00002992- the pickle module no longer accepts the deprecated None option in the
2993 args tuple returned by __reduce__().
2994
Brett Cannon84667c02004-12-07 03:25:18 +00002995- optparse now optionally imports gettext. This allows its use in setup.py.
2996
Raymond Hettinger3489cad2004-12-05 05:20:42 +00002997- the pickle module no longer uses the deprecated bin parameter.
2998

3000
Raymond Hettinger6c92d762004-12-05 03:28:00 +00003001- the pstats module no longer uses the deprecated ignore() method.
3002
Raymond Hettingerf3fa9462004-12-05 01:58:09 +00003003- the filecmp module no longer uses the deprecated use_statcache argument.
3004
Raymond Hettinger664347b2004-12-04 21:21:53 +00003005- unittest.TestCase.run() and unittest.TestSuite.run() can now be successfully
3006 extended or overridden by subclasses. Formerly, the subclassed method would
3007 be ignored by the rest of the module. (Bug #1078905).
3008
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00003009- heapq.nsmallest() and heapq.nlargest() now support key= arguments with
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00003010 the same meaning as in list.sort().
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00003011
Walter Dörwald36733692004-12-22 12:50:50 +00003012- Bug #1076985: ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` now calls ``read()`` only
3013 once when a size argument is given. This prevents a buffer overflow in the
3014 tokenizer with very long source lines.
3015
Barry Warsaw538561e2006-01-01 21:48:54 +00003016- Bug #1083110: ``zlib.decompress.flush()`` would segfault if called
3017 immediately after creating the object, without any intervening
3018 ``.decompress()`` calls.
Andrew M. Kuchling3b585b32004-12-28 20:10:48 +00003019
Skip Montanaro05885812005-01-16 20:48:27 +00003020- The reconvert.quote function can now emit triple-quoted strings. The
3021 reconvert module now has some simple documentation.
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00003022
Walter Dörwaldaf3b39a2005-02-18 13:22:43 +00003023- ``UserString.MutableString`` now supports negative indices in
3024 ``__setitem__`` and ``__delitem__``
3025
Greg Ward40407942005-03-05 02:53:17 +00003026- Bug #1149508: ``textwrap`` now handles hyphenated numbers (eg. "2004-03-05")
3027 correctly.
3028
Walter Dörwaldbc8e6422005-04-21 21:32:03 +00003029- Partial fixes for SF bugs #1163244 and #1175396: If a chunk read by
3030 ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` has a trailing "\r", read one more
3031 character even if the user has passed a size parameter to get a proper
3032 line ending. Remove the special handling of a "\r\n" that has been split
3033 between two lines.
3034
Walter Dörwalda47d1c02005-08-30 10:23:14 +00003035- Bug #1251300: On UCS-4 builds the "unicode-internal" codec will now complain
3036 about illegal code points. The codec now supports PEP 293 style error
3037 handlers.
3038
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00003039- Bug #1235646: ``codecs.StreamRecoder.next()`` now reencodes the data it reads
Walter Dörwaldc5238b82005-09-01 11:56:53 +00003040 from the input stream, so that the output is a byte string in the correct
3041 encoding instead of a unicode string.
Greg Ward40407942005-03-05 02:53:17 +00003042
Gustavo Niemeyer6fa0c5a2005-09-14 08:54:39 +00003043- Bug #1202493: Fixing SRE parser to handle '{}' as perl does, rather than
3044 considering it exactly like a '*'.
3045
Walter Dörwald007f8df2005-10-09 19:42:27 +00003046- Bug #1245379: Add "unicode-1-1-utf-7" as an alias for "utf-7" to
3047 ``encodings.aliases``.
Gustavo Niemeyer6fa0c5a2005-09-14 08:54:39 +00003048
Walter Dörwald09f0dd52005-11-21 19:10:07 +00003049- ` uu.encode()`` and ``uu.decode()`` now support unicode filenames.
3050
Gustavo Niemeyer548148812006-01-31 18:34:13 +00003051- Patch #1413711: Certain patterns of differences were making difflib
3052 touch the recursion limit.
3053
Walter Dörwald58917a62006-03-31 15:26:22 +00003054- Bug #947906: An object oriented interface has been added to the calendar
3055 module. It's possible to generate HTML calendar now and the module can be
Walter Dörwald48d5e502006-04-01 07:57:00 +00003056 called as a script (e.g. via ``python -mcalendar``). Localized month and
3057 weekday names can be ouput (even if an exotic encoding is used) using
3058 special classes that use unicode.

3081
Trent Mick8321b422005-07-26 02:29:21 +00003082- Upgrade Windows build to zlib 1.2.3 which eliminates a potential security
3083 vulnerability in zlib 1.2.1 and 1.2.2.
3084
Brett Cannon08cd5982005-04-24 22:26:38 +00003085- EXTRA_CFLAGS has been introduced as an environment variable to hold compiler
3086 flags that change binary compatibility. Changes were also made to
3087 distutils.sysconfig to also use the environment variable when used during
Martin v. Löwisd7c795e2005-04-25 07:14:03 +00003088 compilation of the interpreter and of C extensions through distutils.

Bob Ippolitoed233462005-03-29 13:47:59 +00003090- SF patch 1171735: Darwin 8's headers are anal about POSIX compliance,
3091 and linking has changed (prebinding is now deprecated, and libcc_dynamic
3092 no longer exists). This configure patch makes things right.
3093
Martin v. Löwise2713be2005-03-08 15:03:08 +00003094- Bug #1158607: Build with --disable-unicode again.
3095
Brett Cannon46d96232005-02-16 00:07:19 +00003096- spwdmodule.c is built only if either HAVE_GETSPNAM or HAVE_HAVE_GETSPENT is
3097 defined. Discovered as a result of not being able to build on OS X.
3098
Brett Cannon516592f2004-12-07 00:42:59 +00003099- setup.py now uses the directories specified in LDFLAGS using the -L option
3100 and in CPPFLAGS using the -I option for adding library and include
3101 directories, respectively, for compiling extension modules against. This has
3102 led to the core being compiled using the values in CPPFLAGS. It also removes
3103 the need for the special-casing of both DarwinPorts and Fink for darwin since
3104 the proper directories can be specified in LDFLAGS (``-L/sw/lib`` for Fink,
3105 ``-L/opt/local/lib`` for DarwinPorts) and CPPFLAGS (``-I/sw/include`` for
3106 Fink, ``-I/opt/local/include`` for DarwinPorts).
3107
Brett Cannon43802422005-02-10 20:48:03 +00003108- Test in configure.in that checks for tzset no longer dependent on tm->tm_zone
3109 to exist in the struct (not required by either ISO C nor the UNIX 2 spec).
3110 Tests for sanity in tzname when HAVE_TZNAME defined were also defined.
3111 Closes bug #1096244. Thanks Gregory Bond.

3114-----
3115
Tim Petersc9d78aa2006-03-26 23:27:58 +00003116- ``PyMem_{Del, DEL}`` and ``PyMem_{Free, FREE}`` no longer map to
3117 ``PyObject_{Free, FREE}``. They map to the system ``free()`` now. If memory
3118 is obtained via the ``PyObject_`` family, it must be released via the
3119 ``PyObject_`` family, and likewise for the ``PyMem_`` family. This has
3120 always been officially true, but when Python's small-object allocator was
3121 introduced, an attempt was made to cater to a few extension modules
3122 discovered at the time that obtained memory via ``PyObject_New`` but
3123 released it via ``PyMem_DEL``. It's years later, and if such code still
3124 exists it will fail now (probably with segfaults, but calling wrong
3125 low-level memory management functions can yield many symptoms).
3126
Raymond Hettingerbeb31012005-08-16 03:47:52 +00003127- Added a C API for set and frozenset objects.
