Barry Warsaw6a0b5592008-08-21 02:12:56 +00007What's New in Python 2.6 release candidate 1?
8=============================================
9
10*Release date: XX-XXX-2008*
11
12Core and Builtins
13-----------------
14
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcd3ffb892008-09-09 07:24:30 +000015- Issue #3777: long() applied to a float object now always return a long
16 object; previously an int would be returned for small values. the __long__
17 method is allowed to return either an int or a long, but the behaviour of
18 float objects should not change to respect backward compatibility.
19
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +000020- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with
21 a unicode argument.
22
Benjamin Peterson17f03ca2008-09-01 14:18:30 +000023- Issue #3683: Fix compilation when --without-threads is given.
24
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +000025- Issue #3668: Fix a memory leak with the "s*" argument parser in
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +000026 PyArg_ParseTuple and friends, which occurred when the argument for "s*"
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +000027 was correctly parsed but parsing of subsequent arguments failed.
28
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +000029- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +000030 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
31 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
32 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
33 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
34 type object.
35
Neal Norwitz18aa3882008-08-24 05:04:52 +000036- Fix crashes on memory allocation failure found with failmalloc.
37
38- Fix memory leaks found with valgrind and update suppressions file.
39
40- Fix compiler warnings in opt mode which would lead to invalid memory reads.
41
42- Fix problem using wrong name in decimal module reported by pychecker.
43
Christian Heimesfb1813c2008-08-22 19:34:15 +000044- Issue #3642: Changed type of numarenas from uint to size_t
45 in order to silence a compilier warning on 64bit OSes.
46
Christian Heimes7d4c3172008-08-22 19:47:25 +000047- Silenced another compiler warning about a used but not defined
48 function 'stringlib_contains_obj'.
49
Benjamin Peterson712ee922008-08-24 18:10:20 +000050- Added warnings on the use of ``__getslice__``, ``__setslice__``, or
51 ``__delslice__``.
52
Gregory P. Smith2bb25cc2008-09-02 05:29:51 +000053- Issue #3678: Correctly pass LDFLAGS and LDLAST to the linker on shared
54 library targets in the Makefile.
55
Gregory P. Smith980b99b2008-09-07 05:15:18 +000056- Issue #1204: The configure script now tests for additional libraries
57 that may be required when linking against readline. This fixes issues
58 with x86_64 builds on some platforms (a few Linux flavors and OpenBSD).
59
Benjamin Peterson14cb6bc2008-08-26 17:08:40 +000060C-API

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000147What's New in Python 2.6 beta 3?
148================================
149
Barry Warsaw07a4a382008-08-21 01:15:08 +0000150*Release date: 20-Aug-2008*
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000151
152Core and Builtins
153-----------------
154
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000155- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
156 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
157 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
158 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
159 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
160 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
161 default.
162
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000163- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
164 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
165
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000166- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
167 value again.
168
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000169- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
170 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
171 and introducing s*.
172
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000173- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
174 object was stored in the freelist.
175
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000176- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
177 ValueError consistently across platforms.
178
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000179- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
180 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
181 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
182
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000183- Apply security patches from Apple.
184
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000185- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
186 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
187
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000188- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
189 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
190
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000191- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
192 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
193 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
194
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000195- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
196 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
197 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
198 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
199 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
200 failed have been fixed.
201
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000202Library
203-------
204
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +0000205- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
206
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000207- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
208 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
209
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000210- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
211 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
212 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
213
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000214- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
215 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
216 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
217 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
218 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
219 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
220
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000221- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
222 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
223
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +0000224- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
225
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +0000226- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.
227
Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +0000228- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.
229
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +0000230- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
231 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
232
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +0000233- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
234 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
235
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +0000236- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
237 in a redirect.
238
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000239- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in
Brett Cannon721b1452008-08-16 22:00:27 +0000240 BaseHTTPServer, cgi (and rfc822), httplib.
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000241
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +0000242- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash
243 after a 302 response in the case of not going through a proxy.
244
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +0000245- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
246 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
247 regular expression.
248
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +0000249- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now
250 thread-safe.
251
Brett Cannonbf3157b2008-08-14 05:00:03 +0000252- Silence the DeprecationWarning of rfc822 when it is imported by mimetools
253 since mimetools itself is deprecated. Because modules are cached, all
254 subsequent imports of rfc822 will not raise a visible DeprecationWarning.
255
Antoine Pitrou9fcd4b32008-08-11 17:21:36 +0000256- Issue #3134: shutil referenced undefined WindowsError symbol.
257
Robert Schuppenies14646332008-08-10 11:01:53 +0000258- Issue #1342811: Fix leak in Tkinter.Menu.delete. Commands associated to
259 menu entries were not deleted.
260
Brett Cannon83e81842008-08-09 23:30:55 +0000261- Copied the implementation of reduce() to _functools.reduce() to have a
262 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
263
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +0000264- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise
265 a MemoryError rather than silently stop the iteration.
266
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +0000267- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"
268 to _sre.compile() will now be rejected. This should not affect anybody
269 since the re.compile() function never generates invalid re-bytecode.
270
Skip Montanaroa032bf42008-08-08 22:52:51 +0000271- Issue #3436: Make csv.DictReader's fieldnames attribute a property so that
272 upon first access it can be automatically initialized from the csv file if
273 it wasn't initialized during instantiation.
274
Brett Cannon3aa2a492008-08-06 22:28:09 +0000275- Issue #2338: Create imp.reload() to help with transitioning to Python 3.0 as
276 the reload() built-in has been removed.

Antoine Pitroude781a42008-08-09 12:43:23 +0000290 asking for a specific length. This problem only affected files opened
291 using the new "io" module, not the built-in open() function.

347-----------------
348
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000349- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
350 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
351 an integer using operator.index().
352
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000353- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
354 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
355
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000356- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
357 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
358
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000359- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
360 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
361 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
362
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000363- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
364 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
365 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
366 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
367 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
368 level.
369
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000370- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
371 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
372 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
373 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
374 all imports from that module to fail.
375
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000376- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
377 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
378 new-style classes.
379

383
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000384- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from

386 another thread's dictionary.
387
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000388- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
389 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
390 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
391 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
392 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
393 10, -1).
394
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000395- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
396 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
397 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000435- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
436 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000437 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000438 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000909- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
910 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
911 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
912 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
913 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
914 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
915 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support
916 for the ``line`` argument will raise a DeprecationWarning.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000979- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
980 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
981 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
982 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
983 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
984 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
985 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
986 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
987 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
988 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
989 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
990 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
991 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
992 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
993 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
994 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
995 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
996 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
997 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
998 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
999
1000 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1001 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1002 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1003 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1004 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1005 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1006 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1007 access to the underlying socket used.
1008
1009 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1010 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1011 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001012
1013 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001014 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001015 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
1016 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
1017
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001018 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
1019 suite to run in parallel without issue.

1297
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001298- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1299 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1300 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1301 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1302 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1303 module is:
1304 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1305
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001306- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1307 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1308 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1309 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1310 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1311 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1312
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001313- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1314 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1315 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1316 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1317 PyObject_Format().
1318
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001319- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1320 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1321 state.

1332 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001333
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001334- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a

1350 returns pi_t.
Christian Heimes951cc0f2008-01-31 23:08:23 +00001351

1369 compiler, even in the presence of an "else" clause, which is
1370 supposed to be run when the condition is false. Now the compiler

Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +00001552- Bug #1683368: The object.__init__() and object.__new__() methods are
1553 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when
1554 either allows excess arguments is when it is not overridden and the

Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +00001557 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
