16
Christian Heimes288e89a2008-01-18 18:24:07 +000017- Issue #1865: Bytes as an alias for str and b"" as an alias "" were
18 added.
19
Christian Heimesc94e2b52008-01-14 04:13:37 +000020- sys.float_info / PyFloat_GetInfo: The floating point information
21 object was converted from a dict to a specialized structseq object.
22
Christian Heimesf31b69f2008-01-14 03:42:48 +000023- Patch #1816: Added sys.flags structseq. It exposes the status of most
24 command line arguments and PYTHON* environment variables.
25
26- Object/structseq.c: Implemented new structseq representation. The patch
27 makes structseqs (e.g. the return value of os.stat) more readable.
Christian Heimes9c201962008-01-14 03:33:52 +000028

38 and sys.dont_write_bytecode attribute. All these can be set to forbid Python
39 to attempt to write compiled bytecode files.
40
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce0b76952008-01-04 02:04:15 +000041- Improve some exception messages when Windows fails to load an extension
42 module. Now we get for example '%1 is not a valid Win32 application' instead
43 of 'error code 193'.
44
Christian Heimes8267d1d2008-01-04 00:37:34 +000045- Bug #1481296: Fixed long(float('nan'))!=0L.
46

51 and INF. float("nan"), float("inf") and float("-inf") now work on every
52 platform with IEEE 754 semantics.
53
Raymond Hettingerfd7ed402007-12-18 21:24:09 +000054- Compiler now generates simpler and faster code for dictionary literals.
55 The oparg for BUILD_MAP now indicates an estimated dictionary size.
56 There is a new opcode, STORE_MAP, for adding entries to the dictionary.
57
Christian Heimesdb3d6cb2007-12-16 21:39:43 +000058- Issue #1638: %zd configure test fails on Linux
59
Christian Heimes90e10e72007-12-14 02:35:23 +000060- Issue #1620: New property decorator syntax was modifying the decorator
61 in place instead of creating a new decorator object.
62
Christian Heimes284d9272007-12-10 22:28:56 +000063- Issue #1580: New free format floating point representation based on
64 "Floating-Point Printer Sample Code", by Robert G. Burger. For example
65 repr(11./5) now returns '2.2' instead of '2.2000000000000002'.

74 inside packages with the -m switch via a new module level
75 __package__ attribute.
76
Christian Heimesdfdfaab2007-12-01 11:20:10 +000077- Issue #1534: Added ``PyFloat_GetMax()``, ``PyFloat_GetMin()`` and
78 ``PyFloat_GetInfo()`` to the float API.
79
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcdafd32b2007-11-30 20:51:40 +000080- Issue #1521: On 64bit platforms, using PyArgs_ParseTuple with the t# of w#
81 format code incorrectly truncated the length to an int, even when
82 PY_SSIZE_T_CLEAN is set. The str.decode method used to return incorrect
83 results with huge strings.
84
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbe49a902007-11-30 20:37:22 +000085- Issue #1402: Fix a crash on exit, when another thread is still running, and

96
Nick Coghlan327a39b2007-11-18 11:56:28 +000097- Patch #1739468: Directories and zipfiles containing a __main__.py file can
98 now be directly executed by passing their name to the interpreter. The
99 directory/zipfile is automatically inserted as the first entry in sys.path.
100
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0d75f092007-11-13 21:54:28 +0000101- Issue #1265: Fix a problem with sys.settrace, if the tracing function uses a
102 generator expression when at the same time the executed code is closing a
103 paused generator.
104
Raymond Hettinger1760c8a2007-11-08 02:52:43 +0000105- sets and frozensets now have an isdisjoint() method.

Raymond Hettinger8f669372007-10-03 21:18:11 +0000111- The enumerate() builtin function is no longer bounded to sequences smaller
112 than LONG_MAX. Formerly, it raised an OverflowError. Now, automatically
113 shifts from ints to longs.
114
Brett Cannon0b14f242007-09-30 19:45:10 +0000115- Issue #1686386: Tuple's tp_repr did not take into account the possibility of
116 having a self-referential tuple, which is possible from C code. Nor did
117 object's tp_str consider that a type's tp_str could do something that could
118 lead to an inifinite recursion. Py_ReprEnter() and Py_EnterRecursiveCall(),
119 respectively, fixed the issues.
120
Brett Cannon01531592007-09-17 03:28:34 +0000121- Issue #1164: It was possible to trigger deadlock when using the 'print'
122 statement to write to a file since the GIL was not released as needed. Now
123 PyObject_Print() does the right thing along with various tp_print
124 implementations of the built-in types and those in the collections module.
125
Brett Cannon4c20bc42007-09-11 21:02:28 +0000126- Issue #1147: Exceptions were directly allowing string exceptions in their
127 throw() method even though string exceptions no longer allowed.
128
Brett Cannona0c05512007-09-10 21:38:27 +0000129- Issue #1096: Prevent a segfault from getting the repr of a very deeply nested
130 list by using the recursion counter.
131
Brett Cannon1e534b52007-09-07 04:18:30 +0000132- Issue #1202533: Fix infinite recursion calls triggered by calls to
133 PyObject_Call() never calling back out to Python code to trigger recursion
134 depth updates/checks. Required the creation of a static RuntimeError
135 instance in case normalizing an exception put the recursion check value past
136 its limit. Fixes crashers infinite_rec_(1|2|4|5).py.
137
Martin v. Löwisa5136192007-09-04 14:19:28 +0000138- Patch #1031213: Decode source line in SyntaxErrors back to its original source

162 __*__ attributes. (Some already existed, e.g., __doc__ and __name__.)
163
Neal Norwitz8b2bfbc2007-05-23 06:35:32 +0000164- Add -3 option to the interpreter to warn about features that are
165 deprecated and will be changed/removed in Python 3.0.
166
Georg Brandl2134e752007-05-21 20:34:16 +0000167- Patch #1686487: you can now pass any mapping after '**' in function
168 calls.
169
Collin Winter62903052007-05-18 23:11:24 +0000170- except clauses may now be spelled either "except E, target:" or

Neal Norwitzcbd9ee62007-04-14 05:25:50 +0000180 setting a plain string, ie don't expand to single letter identifiers.
181
Raymond Hettinger13936692007-04-11 18:40:58 +0000182- Request #1191699: Slices can now be pickled.

187
Georg Brandl5cb76c12007-03-21 09:00:39 +0000188- Patch #1682205: a TypeError while unpacking an iterable is no longer
189 masked by a generic one with the message "unpack non-sequence".
190
Neal Norwitzaa754b72007-03-21 06:39:48 +0000191- Remove unused file Python/fmod.c.
192
Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +0000193- Bug #1683368: The object.__init__() and object.__new__() methods are
194 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when
195 either allows excess arguments is when it is not overridden and the
196 other one is. For backwards compatibility, when both are
197 overridden, it is a deprecation warning (for now; maybe a Py3k
Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +0000198 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
199 as supported by type.__new__().
Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +0000200
Georg Brandl2b869942007-03-17 16:08:45 +0000201- Patch #1675423: PyComplex_AsCComplex() now tries to convert an object
202 to complex using its __complex__() method before falling back to the
203 __float__() method. Therefore, the functions in the cmath module now
204 can operate on objects that define a __complex__() method.
205
Žiga Seilnacht6f2d09c2007-03-16 11:59:38 +0000206- Patch #1623563: allow __class__ assignment for classes with __slots__.

216 name.
217
Georg Brandl5240d742007-03-13 20:46:32 +0000218- Patch #1444529: the builtin compile() now accepts keyword arguments.
219
Georg Brandl7b9c5552007-03-12 14:30:05 +0000220- Bug #1678647: write a newline after printing an exception in any
221 case, even when converting the value to a string failed.
222
Georg Brandl871f1bc2007-03-12 13:17:36 +0000223- The dir() function has been extended to call the __dir__() method on
224 its argument, if it exists. If not, it will work like before. This allows
225 customizing the output of dir() in the presence of a __getattr__().
226
Collin Winter276887b2007-03-12 16:11:39 +0000227- Patch #922167: Python no longer segfaults when faced with infinitely
228 self-recursive reload() calls (as reported by bug #742342).
229
Žiga Seilnacht89032082007-03-11 15:54:54 +0000230- Patch #1675981: remove unreachable code from ``type.__new__()`` method.
231
Collin Wintere38051d2007-03-09 20:33:07 +0000232- Patch #1491866: change the complex() constructor to allow parthensized
233 forms. This means complex(repr(x)) now works instead of raising a
234 ValueError.
235
Georg Brandlaa2321b2007-03-07 00:40:28 +0000236- Patch #703779: unset __file__ in __main__ after running a file. This
237 makes the filenames the warning module prints much more sensible when
238 a PYTHONSTARTUP file is used.
239
Georg Brandl49aafc92007-03-07 00:34:46 +0000240- Variant of patch #697613: don't exit the interpreter on a SystemExit
241 exception if the -i command line option or PYTHONINSPECT environment
242 variable is given, but break into the interactive interpreter just like
243 on other exceptions or normal program exit.

246
Georg Brandl098cd692007-03-06 12:17:50 +0000247- Bug #1674503: close the file opened by execfile() in an error condition.
248
Georg Brandl0fca97a2007-03-05 22:28:08 +0000249- Patch #1674228: when assigning a slice (old-style), check for the
250 sq_ass_slice instead of the sq_slice slot.
251
Neal Norwitz88516a62007-02-26 22:41:45 +0000252- When printing an unraisable error, don't print exceptions. before the name.
253 This duplicates the behavior whening normally printing exceptions.

256
Brett Cannon129bd522007-01-30 21:34:36 +0000257- PEP 352: Raising a string exception now triggers a TypeError. Attempting to
258 catch a string exception raises DeprecationWarning.

1446Core and builtins
1447-----------------
1448
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +00001449- Unicode objects will no longer raise an exception when being
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001450 compared equal or unequal to a string and a UnicodeDecodeError
1451 exception occurs, e.g. as result of a decoding failure.
Neal Norwitz56423e52006-08-13 18:11:08 +00001452
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +00001453 Instead, the equal (==) and unequal (!=) comparison operators will
1454 now issue a UnicodeWarning and interpret the two objects as
1455 unequal. The UnicodeWarning can be filtered as desired using
1456 the warning framework, e.g. silenced completely, turned into an
1457 exception, logged, etc.
1458
1459 Note that compare operators other than equal and unequal will still
1460 raise UnicodeDecodeError exceptions as they've always done.
Neal Norwitz8a87f5d2006-08-12 17:03:09 +00001461
Marc-André Lemburg757ea272006-08-14 11:44:34 +00001462- Fix segfault when doing string formatting on subclasses of long.
1463
1464- Fix bug related to __len__ functions using values > 2**32 on 64-bit machines
1465 with new-style classes.
1466
1467- Fix bug related to __len__ functions returning negative values with
1468 classic classes.
1469
1470- Patch #1538606, Fix __index__() clipping. There were some problems
1471 discovered with the API and how integers that didn't fit into Py_ssize_t
1472 were handled. This patch attempts to provide enough alternatives
1473 to effectively use __index__.
1474
Martin v. Löwisab2f8f72006-08-09 07:57:39 +00001475- Bug #1536021: __hash__ may now return long int; the final hash
1476 value is obtained by invoking hash on the long int.
1477
Thomas Hellerab1049c2006-08-08 17:37:00 +00001478- Bug #1536786: buffer comparison could emit a RuntimeWarning.
1479
Georg Brandl7e3ba2a2006-08-06 08:23:54 +00001480- Bug #1535165: fixed a segfault in input() and raw_input() when
1481 sys.stdin is closed.
1482
Thomas Heller74d36f02006-08-04 18:17:40 +00001483- On Windows, the PyErr_Warn function is now exported from
1484 the Python dll again.
1485
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +00001486- Bug #1191458: tracing over for loops now produces a line event
1487 on each iteration. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc
1488 magic number. This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5c1
1489 will be regenerated.
1490
Neal Norwitz0cbd8052006-08-04 05:09:28 +00001491- Bug #1333982: string/number constants were inappropriately stored
1492 in the byte code and co_consts even if they were not used, ie
1493 immediately popped off the stack.
1494
Georg Brandle9462c72006-08-04 18:03:37 +00001495- Fixed a reference-counting problem in property().
1496
Neal Norwitzff4b63b2006-08-04 04:50:21 +00001497
1498Library
1499-------
1500
Neil Schemenauer4c6b0d52006-08-16 23:38:05 +00001501- Fix a bug in the ``compiler`` package that caused invalid code to be
1502 generated for generator expressions.
1503
Marc-André Lemburg574cfea2006-08-16 16:11:01 +00001504- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0. The change to
1505 keep it programmatically in sync with the Python version running
1506 the code (introduced in 2.5b3) has been reverted. It will continue
1507 to be maintained manually as static string literal.
1508
Andrew M. Kuchlingc13324e2006-08-16 17:11:18 +00001509- If the Python part of a ctypes callback function returns None,
Thomas Hellerb4a0cf12006-08-16 15:10:12 +00001510 and this cannot be converted to the required C type, an exception is
1511 printed with PyErr_WriteUnraisable. Before this change, the C
Andrew M. Kuchlingc13324e2006-08-16 17:11:18 +00001512 callback returned arbitrary values to the calling code.
Thomas Hellerb4a0cf12006-08-16 15:10:12 +00001513
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001514- The __repr__ method of a NULL ctypes.py_object() no longer raises
Thomas Hellerb0aa98f2006-08-16 14:07:44 +00001515 an exception.
1516
Tim Petersc10c9d02006-09-05 02:18:09 +00001517- uuid.UUID now has a bytes_le attribute. This returns the UUID in
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001518 little-endian byte order for Windows. In addition, uuid.py gained some
Anthony Baxter58179592006-08-16 13:08:25 +00001519 workarounds for clocks with low resolution, to stop the code yielding
1520 duplicate UUIDs.
1521
Kurt B. Kaiserd112bc72006-08-16 05:01:42 +00001522- Patch #1540892: site.py Quitter() class attempts to close sys.stdin
1523 before raising SystemExit, allowing IDLE to honor quit() and exit().
1524
Neal Norwitzbf8c1952006-08-15 04:14:57 +00001525- Bug #1224621: make tabnanny recognize IndentationErrors raised by tokenize.
1526
Georg Brandl7a1af772006-08-14 21:55:28 +00001527- Patch #1536071: trace.py should now find the full module name of a
1528 file correctly even on Windows.
1529
Georg Brandl0a7d1bb2006-08-11 07:26:10 +00001530- logging's atexit hook now runs even if the rest of the module has
1531 already been cleaned up.
1532
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001533- Bug #1112549, fix DoS attack on cgi.FieldStorage.
Guido van Rossum133f4e42006-08-10 17:42:50 +00001534
Neal Norwitzff4b63b2006-08-04 04:50:21 +00001535- Bug #1531405, format_exception no longer raises an exception if
1536 str(exception) raised an exception.
1537
Neil Schemenauer06ded092006-08-04 16:20:30 +00001538- Fix a bug in the ``compiler`` package that caused invalid code to be
1539 generated for nested functions.
1540
Neal Norwitzff4b63b2006-08-04 04:50:21 +00001541

1548 raises the correct exceptions.
1549
Thomas Heller1ce433e2006-08-14 16:20:04 +00001550- Patch # 1536908: enable building ctypes on OpenBSD/AMD64. The
1551 '-no-stack-protector' compiler flag for OpenBSD has been removed.
1552
Thomas Heller86720042006-08-14 11:17:48 +00001553- Patch #1532975 was applied, which fixes Bug #1533481: ctypes now
1554 uses the _as_parameter_ attribute when objects are passed to foreign
1555 function calls. The ctypes version number was changed to 1.0.1.
1556
Bob Ippolitoe6c9f982006-08-04 23:59:21 +00001557- Bug #1530559, struct.pack raises TypeError where it used to convert.
1558 Passing float arguments to struct.pack when integers are expected
1559 now triggers a DeprecationWarning.
1560

1609Core and builtins
1610-----------------
1611
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001612- _PyWeakref_GetWeakrefCount() now returns a Py_ssize_t; it previously
Neal Norwitzc5e060d2006-08-02 06:14:22 +00001613 returned a long (see PEP 353).
1614
Neal Norwitzf71ec5a2006-07-30 06:57:04 +00001615- Bug #1515471: string.replace() accepts character buffers again.
1616
Neal Norwitz07aadb12006-07-30 06:55:48 +00001617- Add PyErr_WarnEx() so C code can pass the stacklevel to warnings.warn().
1618 This provides the proper warning for struct.pack().
1619 PyErr_Warn() is now deprecated in favor of PyErr_WarnEx().
1620
Neal Norwitz0d62a062006-07-30 06:53:31 +00001621- Patch #1531113: Fix augmented assignment with yield expressions.
1622 Also fix a SystemError when trying to assign to yield expressions.
1623
Phillip J. Ebyf7575d02006-07-28 21:12:07 +00001624- Bug #1529871: The speed enhancement patch #921466 broke Python's compliance
1625 with PEP 302. This was fixed by adding an ``imp.NullImporter`` type that is
1626 used in ``sys.path_importer_cache`` to cache non-directory paths and avoid
1627 excessive filesystem operations during imports.
1628
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +00001629- Bug #1521947: When checking for overflow, ``PyOS_strtol()`` used some
1630 operations on signed longs that are formally undefined by C.
1631 Unfortunately, at least one compiler now cares about that, so complicated
1632 the code to make that compiler happy again.
1633
Martin v. Löwis982e9fe2006-07-24 12:54:17 +00001634- Bug #1524310: Properly report errors from FindNextFile in os.listdir.

1644 had more than 255 blank lines.
1645
Georg Brandl9dceedb2006-07-12 15:31:17 +00001646- Patch #1521179: Python now accepts the standard options ``--help`` and
1647 ``--version`` as well as ``/?`` on Windows.
1648
Andrew M. Kuchling93c928e2006-07-26 17:19:39 +00001649- Bug #1520864: unpacking singleton tuples in a 'for' loop (for x, in) works
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +00001650 again. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc magic number.
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +00001651 This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5b3 will be regenerated.
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +00001652
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +00001653- Bug #1524317: Compiling Python ``--without-threads`` failed.
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001654 The Python core compiles again, and, in a build without threads, the
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +00001655 new ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dictionary with one entry,
1656 mapping the faux "thread id" 0 to the current frame.
1657
Ronald Oussoren3075e162006-07-25 20:28:55 +00001658- Bug #1525447: build on MacOS X on a case-sensitive filesystem.
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +00001659
Ronald Oussoren3075e162006-07-25 20:28:55 +00001660

1662-------
1663
Facundo Batista6e22be72008-01-19 18:45:46 +00001664- Fix #1693149. Now you can pass several modules separated by
1665 comma to trace.py in the same --ignore-module option.
1666
Martin v. Löwis961b91b2006-08-02 13:53:55 +00001667- Correction of patch #1455898: In the mbcs decoder, set final=False
1668 for stream decoder, but final=True for the decode function.
1669
Georg Brandl07fec3a2006-08-01 18:49:24 +00001670- os.urandom no longer masks unrelated exceptions like SystemExit or
1671 KeyboardInterrupt.
1672
Tim Peters4643c2f2006-08-10 22:45:34 +00001673- Bug #1525866: Don't copy directory stat times in
Martin v. Löwis4e678382006-07-30 13:00:31 +00001674 shutil.copytree on Windows
1675
Georg Brandle34ac7c2006-07-30 11:07:23 +00001676- Bug #1002398: The documentation for os.path.sameopenfile now correctly
1677 refers to file descriptors, not file objects.
1678
Tim Petersc10c9d02006-09-05 02:18:09 +00001679- The renaming of the xml package to xmlcore, and the import hackery done
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001680 to make it appear at both names, has been removed. Bug #1511497,
Fred Drakefbdeaad2006-07-29 16:56:15 +00001681 #1513611, and probably others.
1682
Georg Brandledd9b0d2006-07-29 09:33:26 +00001683- Bug #1441397: The compiler module now recognizes module and function
1684 docstrings correctly as it did in Python 2.4.
1685
Tim Peters6f681472006-07-27 23:44:37 +00001686- Bug #1529297: The rewrite of doctest for Python 2.4 unintentionally
1687 lost that tests are sorted by name before being run. This rarely
1688 matters for well-written tests, but can create baffling symptoms if
1689 side effects from one test to the next affect outcomes. ``DocTestFinder``
1690 has been changed to sort the list of tests it returns.
1691
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +00001692- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0, and is now kept
Martin v. Löwis1f30c372006-07-30 13:14:05 +00001693 in sync with sys.version_info[:3].
Martin v. Löwis997ceff2006-07-27 06:38:16 +00001694
Martin v. Löwis9298eff2006-07-26 12:12:56 +00001695- Bug #978833: Really close underlying socket in _socketobject.close.
1696
Georg Brandl8c036cc2006-08-20 13:15:39 +00001697- Bug #1459963: urllib and urllib2 now normalize HTTP header names with
1698 title().
Georg Brandl0619a322006-07-26 07:40:17 +00001699
Georg Brandlcf0c1722006-07-26 07:23:32 +00001700- Patch #1525766: In pkgutil.walk_packages, correctly pass the onerror callback
1701 to recursive calls and call it with the failing package name.
1702
Martin v. Löwis0b483032006-07-25 09:53:12 +00001703- Bug #1525817: Don't truncate short lines in IDLE's tool tips.

Georg Brandlc13c34c2006-07-24 14:09:56 +00001705- Patch #1515343: Fix printing of deprecated string exceptions with a
1706 value in the traceback module.
1707
Greg Ward48fae7a2006-07-23 16:05:51 +00001708- Resync optparse with Optik 1.5.3: minor tweaks for/to tests.
1709
Martin v. Löwis426f4a12006-07-18 17:46:31 +00001710- Patch #1524429: Use repr() instead of backticks in Tkinter again.
1711
Brett Cannoncaebe222006-07-18 04:41:36 +00001712- Bug #1520914: Change time.strftime() to accept a zero for any position in its
1713 argument tuple. For arguments where zero is illegal, the value is forced to
1714 the minimum value that is correct. This is to support an undocumented but
1715 common way people used to fill in inconsequential information in the time
1716 tuple pre-2.4.
1717
Bob Ippolito5ea4bf12006-07-15 16:53:15 +00001718- Patch #1220874: Update the binhex module for Mach-O.

Barry Warsawb110bad2006-07-21 14:51:07 +00001720- The email package has improved RFC 2231 support, specifically for
1721 recognizing the difference between encoded (name*0*=<blah>) and non-encoded
1722 (name*0=<blah>) parameter continuations. This may change the types of
1723 values returned from email.message.Message.get_param() and friends.
1724 Specifically in some cases where non-encoded continuations were used,
1725 get_param() used to return a 3-tuple of (None, None, string) whereas now it
1726 will just return the string (since non-encoded continuations don't have
1727 charset and language parts).
1728
1729 Also, whereas % values were decoded in all parameter continuations, they are
1730 now only decoded in encoded parameter parts.
1731
Ronald Oussoren3075e162006-07-25 20:28:55 +00001732- Bug #1517990: IDLE keybindings on MacOS X now work correctly
1733
1734- Bug #1517996: IDLE now longer shows the default Tk menu when a
1735 path browser, class browser or debugger is the frontmost window on MacOS X
1736
Barry Warsaw00decd72006-07-27 23:43:15 +00001737- Patch #1520294: Support for getset and member descriptors in types.py,
1738 inspect.py, and pydoc.py. Specifically, this allows for querying the type
1739 of an object against these built-in types and more importantly, for getting
1740 their docstrings printed in the interactive interpreter's help() function.

1747 a socket operation on a socket with a timeout, the exception will be
1748 caught correctly. Previously, the exception was not caught.
1749
Thomas Heller1393d6a2006-07-28 21:43:20 +00001750- Patch #1529514: The _ctypes extension is now compiled on more

1752
Tim Peters9cab5932006-07-28 00:30:00 +00001753- The ``__reduce__()`` method of the new ``collections.defaultdict`` had

1762 exactly one element enabled again. This allows iterating over these
1763 arrays, without the need to check the array size before.
1764
Thomas Heller6e1ad2e2006-07-13 17:05:13 +00001765- Bug #1521375: When the code in ctypes.util.find_library was
Andrew M. Kuchlingb7eca832006-07-13 17:37:26 +00001766 run with root privileges, it could overwrite or delete
Thomas Heller2bdf29e2006-07-13 17:01:14 +00001767 /dev/null in certain cases; this is now fixed.
1768
Thomas Heller47d7a062006-07-12 08:43:47 +00001769- Bug #1467450: On Mac OS X 10.3, RTLD_GLOBAL is now used as the
1770 default mode for loading shared libraries in ctypes.
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +00001771
Thomas Hellerb4dc2ef2006-07-13 09:53:47 +00001772- Because of a misspelled preprocessor symbol, ctypes was always

1785- Bug #1501330: Change test_ossaudiodev to be much more tolerant in terms of
1786 how long the test file should take to play. Now accepts taking 2.93 secs
1787 (exact time) +/- 10% instead of the hard-coded 3.1 sec.
1788
Georg Brandl4793aa32006-07-28 18:31:39 +00001789- Patch #1529686: The standard tests ``test_defaultdict``, ``test_iterlen``,
1790 ``test_uuid`` and ``test_email_codecs`` didn't actually run any tests when

1801- PythonLauncher now works correctly when the path to the script contains
1802 characters that are treated specially by the shell (such as quotes).
1803
1804- Bug #1527397: PythonLauncher now launches scripts with the working directory
1805 set to the directory that contains the script instead of the user home
Tim Peters4643c2f2006-08-10 22:45:34 +00001806 directory. That latter was an implementation accident and not what users

Neal Norwitz28746ab2006-07-09 22:14:42 +00001836- On 64 bit systems, int literals that use less than 64 bits are
1837 now ints rather than longs.
1838
Neal Norwitzed657552006-07-10 00:04:44 +00001839- Bug #1512814, Fix incorrect lineno's when code at module scope
1840 started after line 256.
1841
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +00001842- New function ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dict mapping thread
1843 id to topmost thread stack frame. This is for expert use, and is
1844 especially useful for debugging application deadlocks. The functionality
1845 was previously available in Fazal Majid's ``threadframe`` extension
1846 module, but it wasn't possible to do this in a wholly threadsafe way from
1847 an extension.

1864
Thomas Woutersadd19112006-07-05 11:03:49 +00001865- string.Template() now correctly handles tuple-values. Previously,

1894
Brett Cannon53ab5b72006-06-22 16:49:14 +00001895- Bug #1510580: The 'warnings' module improperly required that a Warning
1896 category be either a types.ClassType and a subclass of Warning. The proper
1897 check is just that it is a subclass with Warning as the documentation states.
1898
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +00001899- The compiler module now correctly compiles the new try-except-finally

Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +00001914- #1494314: Fix a regression with high-numbered sockets in 2.4.3. This
1915 means that select() on sockets > FD_SETSIZE (typically 1024) work again.
1916 The patch makes sockets use poll() internally where available.
Anthony Baxter93ab5fa2006-07-11 02:04:09 +00001917
Thomas Hellerb9cb84f2006-07-10 11:17:37 +00001918- Assigning None to pointer type fields in ctypes structures possible

Thomas Woutersfc34f6c2006-07-06 10:48:28 +00001951 Previously, the slight difference could cause compilation errors of the
1952 'zlib' module on systems with more than one version of zlib.
1953
Martin v. Löwis4cbd05c2006-07-06 07:05:21 +00001954- The MSI compileall step was fixed to also support a TARGETDIR

1986-----------------
1987
Georg Brandla56b9152006-06-19 06:35:54 +00001988- Patch #1507676: Error messages returned by invalid abstract object operations
1989 (such as iterating over an integer) have been improved and now include the
1990 type of the offending object to help with debugging.
1991
Brett Cannonea3912b2006-06-13 21:46:41 +00001992- Bug #992017: A classic class that defined a __coerce__() method that returned
1993 its arguments swapped would infinitely recurse and segfault the interpreter.
1994
Neal Norwitz909eb122006-06-12 02:13:21 +00001995- Fix the socket tests so they can be run concurrently.
1996
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +00001997- Removed 5 integers from C frame objects (PyFrameObject).

Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +00001999
Brett Cannon22565aa2006-06-09 22:31:23 +00002000- Bug #532646: object.__call__() will continue looking for the __call__
2001 attribute on objects until one without one is found. This leads to recursion
2002 when you take a class and set its __call__ attribute to an instance of the
2003 class. Originally fixed for classic classes, but this fix is for new-style.
2004 Removes the infinite_rec_3 crasher.
2005
Georg Brandl24250812006-06-09 18:45:48 +00002006- The string and unicode methods startswith() and endswith() now accept
2007 a tuple of prefixes/suffixes to look for. Implements RFE #1491485.
2008
Brett Cannonde3b0522006-06-08 17:00:45 +00002009- Buffer objects, at the C level, never used the char buffer
2010 implementation even when the char buffer for the wrapped object was
2011 explicitly requested (originally returned the read or write buffer).
2012 Now a TypeError is raised if the char buffer is not present but is
2013 requested.
2014
Georg Brandlddbaa662006-06-04 21:56:52 +00002015- Patch #1346214: Statements like "if 0: suite" are now again optimized
2016 away like they were in Python 2.4.
2017
Georg Brandlb7c8f542006-05-27 12:30:25 +00002018- Builtin exceptions are now full-blown new-style classes instead of
2019 instances pretending to be classes, which speeds up exception handling
2020 by about 80% in comparison to 2.5a2.
2021
Martin v. Löwisd004fc82006-05-27 08:36:52 +00002022- Patch #1494554: Update unicodedata.numeric and unicode.isnumeric to
2023 Unicode 4.1.
2024
Georg Brandlf4ef1162006-05-26 18:03:31 +00002025- Patch #921466: sys.path_importer_cache is now used to cache valid and
2026 invalid file paths for the built-in import machinery which leads to
2027 fewer open calls on startup.
2028
Tim Peters696cf432006-05-24 21:10:40 +00002029- Patch #1442927: ``long(str, base)`` is now up to 6x faster for non-power-
2030 of-2 bases. The largest speedup is for inputs with about 1000 decimal
2031 digits. Conversion from non-power-of-2 bases remains quadratic-time in
2032 the number of input digits (it was and remains linear-time for bases
2033 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32).
2034
Tim Petersb713ec22006-05-23 18:45:30 +00002035- Bug #1334662: ``int(string, base)`` could deliver a wrong answer
2036 when ``base`` was not 2, 4, 8, 10, 16 or 32, and ``string`` represented
2037 an integer close to ``sys.maxint``. This was repaired by patch
2038 #1335972, which also gives a nice speedup.
2039
Richard Jonescebbefc2006-05-23 18:28:17 +00002040- Patch #1337051: reduced size of frame objects.
2041
2042- PyErr_NewException now accepts a tuple of base classes as its
2043 "base" parameter.
2044
Richard Jones7c88dcc2006-05-23 10:37:38 +00002045- Patch #876206: function call speedup by retaining allocated frame
2046 objects.
2047
Georg Brandl7b90e162006-05-18 07:01:27 +00002048- Bug #1462152: file() now checks more thoroughly for invalid mode
2049 strings and removes a possible "U" before passing the mode to the
2050 C library function.
2051
Neal Norwitz1004a532006-05-15 07:17:23 +00002052- Patch #1488312, Fix memory alignment problem on SPARC in unicode
2053
Neal Norwitz373f0a72006-05-15 07:04:36 +00002054- Bug #1487966: Fix SystemError with conditional expression in assignment
2055
Martin v. Löwis879768d2006-05-11 13:28:43 +00002056- WindowsError now has two error code attributes: errno, which carries
2057 the error values from errno.h, and winerror, which carries the error
2058 values from winerror.h. Previous versions put the winerror.h values
2059 (from GetLastError()) into the errno attribute.
2060
Martin v. Löwis77736712006-05-04 05:51:03 +00002061- Patch #1475845: Raise IndentationError for unexpected indent.
2062
Neal Norwitzc4edb0e2006-05-02 04:43:14 +00002063- Patch #1479181: split open() and file() from being aliases for each other.
2064
Tim Peters44bd9862006-06-01 13:49:23 +00002065- Patch #1497053 & bug #1275608: Exceptions occurring in ``__eq__()``
2066 methods were always silently ignored by dictionaries when comparing keys.
2067 They are now passed through (except when using the C API function
2068 ``PyDict_GetItem()``, whose semantics did not change).
2069
2070- Bug #1456209: In some obscure cases it was possible for a class with a
2071 custom ``__eq__()`` method to confuse dict internals when class instances
2072 were used as a dict's keys and the ``__eq__()`` method mutated the dict.
2073 No, you don't have any code that did this ;-)

2081
Brett Cannon6ee7d012006-06-08 16:23:04 +00002082- Change binascii.hexlify to accept a read-only buffer instead of only a char
2083 buffer and actually follow its documentation.
2084
Hye-Shik Chang58ce5bc2006-06-05 00:59:54 +00002085- Fixed a potentially invalid memory access of CJKCodecs' shift-jis decoder.
2086
Nick Coghlanc649ec52006-05-29 12:43:05 +00002087- Patch #1478788 (modified version): The functional extension module has
2088 been renamed to _functools and a functools Python wrapper module added.
2089 This provides a home for additional function related utilities that are
2090 not specifically about functional programming. See PEP 309.
2091
Bob Ippolito7ccc95a2006-05-23 19:11:34 +00002092- Patch #1493701: performance enhancements for struct module.

Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +00002102- On Win32, os.listdir now supports arbitrarily-long Unicode path names
2103 (up to the system limit of 32K characters).
2104
2105- Use Win32 API to implement os.{access,chdir,chmod,mkdir,remove,rename,rmdir,utime}.
2106 As a result, these functions now raise WindowsError instead of OSError.
2107
Tim Peters7a822da2006-05-25 21:50:17 +00002108- ``time.clock()`` on Win64 should use the high-performance Windows
2109 ``QueryPerformanceCounter()`` now (as was already the case on 32-bit
2110 Windows platforms).
2111
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +00002112- Calling Tk_Init twice is refused if the first call failed as that
2113 may deadlock.
2114
Gregory P. Smith0459e4d2006-06-05 02:02:25 +00002115- bsddb: added the DB_ARCH_REMOVE flag and fixed db.DBEnv.log_archive() to
2116 accept it without potentially using an uninitialized pointer.
2117
2118- bsddb: added support for the DBEnv.log_stat() and DBEnv.lsn_reset() methods
2119 assuming BerkeleyDB >= 4.0 and 4.4 respectively. [pybsddb project SF

2127
Gregory P. Smith3c228b12006-06-05 23:59:37 +00002128- bsddb: the __len__ method of a DB object has been fixed to return correct
2129 results. It could previously incorrectly return 0 in some cases.
2130 Fixes SF bug 1493322 (pybsddb bug 1184012).
2131
Gregory P. Smithff7d9912006-06-08 05:17:08 +00002132- bsddb: the bsddb.dbtables Modify method now raises the proper error and
2133 aborts the db transaction safely when a modifier callback fails.
2134 Fixes SF python patch/bug #1408584.
2135
Gregory P. Smith506f7b52006-06-15 08:52:32 +00002136- bsddb: multithreaded DB access using the simple bsddb module interface

2170
Tim Peters43898b42006-06-14 04:09:25 +00002171- ``difflib``'s ``SequenceMatcher.get_matching_blocks()`` was changed to
2172 guarantee that adjacent triples in the return list always describe
2173 non-adjacent blocks. Previously, a pair of matching blocks could end
2174 up being described by multiple adjacent triples that formed a partition
2175 of the matching pair.
2176
Greg Ward0e0c9f42006-06-11 16:24:11 +00002177- Bug #1498146: fix optparse to handle Unicode strings in option help,

2184
Andrew M. Kuchling0873b112006-06-09 16:46:51 +00002185- The wsgiref package has been added to the standard library.
2186
Nick Coghlan676725d2006-06-08 13:54:49 +00002187- The functions update_wrapper() and wraps() have been added to the functools
2188 module. These make it easier to copy relevant metadata from the original
2189 function when writing wrapper functions.
2190
Tim Petersd6a9eef2006-06-05 01:48:21 +00002191- The optional ``isprivate`` argument to ``doctest.testmod()``, and the
2192 ``doctest.is_private()`` function, both deprecated in 2.4, were removed.
Tim Petersbf0400a2006-06-05 01:43:03 +00002193
Martin v. Löwis3f767792006-06-04 19:36:28 +00002194- Patch #1359618: Speed up charmap encoder by using a trie structure
2195 for lookup.
2196
Tim Petersd609b1a2006-06-02 23:22:51 +00002197- The functions in the ``pprint`` module now sort dictionaries by key
2198 before computing the display. Before 2.5, ``pprint`` sorted a dictionary
2199 if and only if its display required more than one line, although that
2200 wasn't documented. The new behavior increases predictability; e.g.,
2201 using ``pprint.pprint(a_dict)`` in a doctest is now reliable.
2202
Georg Brandlfd9a4b12006-05-29 20:57:01 +00002203- Patch #1497027: try HTTP digest auth before basic auth in urllib2

2221 tarfiles.
2222
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +00002223- Patch #721464: pdb.Pdb instances can now be given explicit stdin and

2289
Martin v. Löwis45294a92006-04-18 06:24:08 +00002290- Under COUNT_ALLOCS, types are not necessarily immortal anymore.
2291
Martin v. Löwis19ab6c92006-04-16 18:55:50 +00002292- All uses of PyStructSequence_InitType have been changed to initialize
2293 the type objects only once, even if the interpreter is initialized
2294 multiple times.
2295
Neal Norwitz61546162006-04-14 05:20:28 +00002296- Bug #1454485, array.array('u') could crash the interpreter. This was
2297 due to PyArgs_ParseTuple(args, 'u#', ...) trying to convert buffers (strings)
2298 to unicode when it didn't make sense. 'u#' now requires a unicode string.
2299
2300- Py_UNICODE is unsigned. It was always documented as unsigned, but
2301 due to a bug had a signed value in previous versions.
2302
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00002303- Patch #837242: ``id()`` of any Python object always gives a positive
2304 number now, which might be a long integer. ``PyLong_FromVoidPtr`` and
2305 ``PyLong_AsVoidPtr`` have been changed accordingly. Note that it has
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00002306 never been correct to implement a ``__hash()__`` method that returns the
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00002307 ``id()`` of an object:
Martin v. Löwis0bc2ab92006-04-10 20:28:17 +00002308
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00002309 def __hash__(self):
2310 return id(self) # WRONG
2311
2312 because a hash result must be a (short) Python int but it was always
2313 possible for ``id()`` to return a Python long. However, because ``id()``
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00002314 could return negative values before, on a 32-bit box an ``id()`` result
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00002315 was always usable as a hash value before this patch. That's no longer
2316 necessarily so.
2317
2318- Python on OS X 10.3 and above now uses dlopen() (via dynload_shlib.c)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00002319 to load extension modules and now provides the dl module. As a result,
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00002320 sys.setdlopenflags() now works correctly on these systems. (SF patch

2324 involving generators that have paused outside of any ``try`` or ``with``
2325 blocks. (In 2.5a1, a paused generator that was part of a reference
2326 cycle could not be garbage collected, regardless of whether it was
2327 paused in a ``try`` or ``with`` block.)

2442
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00002443- The test_contextlib test in 2.5a1 wasn't actually run unless you ran
2444 it separately and by hand. It also wasn't cleaning up its changes to
2445 the current Decimal context.
2446
Thomas Woutersabd08882006-04-26 15:53:30 +00002447- regrtest.py now has a -M option to run tests that test the new limits of
2448 containers, on 64-bit architectures. Running these tests is only sensible
2449 on 64-bit machines with more than two gigabytes of memory. The argument
2450 passed is the maximum amount of memory for the tests to use.

Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002476Core and builtins
2477-----------------
2478
Nick Coghlan43832302006-04-23 17:04:07 +00002479- PEP 338: -m command line switch now delegates to runpy.run_module
2480 allowing it to support modules in packages and zipfiles
2481
Martin v. Löwisc661b882006-04-20 04:54:23 +00002482- On Windows, .DLL is not an accepted file name extension for
2483 extension modules anymore; extensions are only found if they
2484 end in .PYD.
2485
Martin v. Löwisea62d252006-04-03 10:56:49 +00002486- Bug #1421664: sys.stderr.encoding is now set to the same value as
2487 sys.stdout.encoding.
2488
Neal Norwitz92e212f2006-04-03 04:48:37 +00002489- __import__ accepts keyword arguments.
2490
Georg Brandlccadf842006-03-31 18:54:53 +00002491- Patch #1460496: round() now accepts keyword arguments.
2492
Anthony Baxter262c00a2006-03-30 10:53:17 +00002493- Fixed bug #1459029 - unicode reprs were double-escaped.
2494
Hye-Shik Changd478f342006-03-23 12:32:36 +00002495- Patch #1396919: The system scope threads are reenabled on FreeBSD
2496 5.4 and later versions.
2497
Neal Norwitze98ccf62006-03-23 05:39:47 +00002498- Bug #1115379: Compiling a Unicode string with an encoding declaration
2499 now gives a SyntaxError.
2500
Georg Brandlabd1ff82006-03-18 07:59:59 +00002501- Previously, Python code had no easy way to access the contents of a
2502 cell object. Now, a ``cell_contents`` attribute has been added
2503 (closes patch #1170323).
2504
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00002505- Patch #1123430: Python's small-object allocator now returns an arena to
2506 the system ``free()`` when all memory within an arena becomes unused
2507 again. Prior to Python 2.5, arenas (256KB chunks of memory) were never
2508 freed. Some applications will see a drop in virtual memory size now,
2509 especially long-running applications that, from time to time, temporarily
2510 use a large number of small objects. Note that when Python returns an
2511 arena to the platform C's ``free()``, there's no guarantee that the
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00002512 platform C library will in turn return that memory to the operating system.
2513 The effect of the patch is to stop making that impossible, and in tests it
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00002514 appears to be effective at least on Microsoft C and gcc-based systems.
2515 Thanks to Evan Jones for hard work and patience.
2516
Georg Brandl533ff6f2006-03-08 18:09:27 +00002517- Patch #1434038: property() now uses the getter's docstring if there is
2518 no "doc" argument given. This makes it possible to legitimately use
2519 property() as a decorator to produce a read-only property.
2520
Guido van Rossum9aa37ab2006-03-07 18:54:08 +00002521- PEP 357, patch 1436368: add an __index__ method to int/long and a matching
2522 nb_index slot to the PyNumberMethods struct. The slot is consulted instead
2523 of requiring an int or long in slicing and a few other contexts, enabling
2524 other objects (e.g. Numeric Python's integers) to be used as slice indices.
2525
Neal Norwitz995acdf2006-03-07 05:01:00 +00002526- Fixed various bugs reported by Coverity's Prevent tool.
2527
Brett Cannonbf364092006-03-01 04:25:17 +00002528- PEP 352, patch #1104669: Make exceptions new-style objects. Introduced the
2529 new exception base class, BaseException, which has a new message attribute.
2530 KeyboardInterrupt and SystemExit to directly inherit from BaseException now.
2531 Raising a string exception now raises a DeprecationWarning.
2532
Thomas Woutersfb609f42006-02-28 16:37:25 +00002533- Patch #1438387, PEP 328: relative and absolute imports. Imports can now be
2534 explicitly relative, using 'from .module import name' to mean 'from the same
2535 package as this module is in. Imports without dots still default to the
2536 old relative-then-absolute, unless 'from __future__ import
2537 absolute_import' is used.
2538
Brett Cannona7446e32006-02-27 23:39:10 +00002539- Properly check if 'warnings' raises an exception (usually when a filter set
2540 to "error" is triggered) when raising a warning for raising string
2541 exceptions.
2542
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002543- CO_GENERATOR_ALLOWED is no longer defined. This behavior is the default.
Neal Norwitz0023a2f2006-02-27 23:24:48 +00002544 The name was removed from Include/code.h.
2545
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002546- PEP 308: conditional expressions were added: (x if cond else y).
Neal Norwitzeb651252006-02-27 16:47:12 +00002547
Guido van Rossum1968ad32006-02-25 22:38:04 +00002548- Patch 1433928:
2549 - The copy module now "copies" function objects (as atomic objects).
2550 - dict.__getitem__ now looks for a __missing__ hook before raising
2551 KeyError.
2552
Tim Peters84ef21c2006-02-28 20:39:06 +00002553- PEP 343: with statement implemented. Needs ``from __future__ import
2554 with_statement``. Use of 'with' as a variable will generate a warning.
2555 Use of 'as' as a variable will also generate a warning (unless it's
Neal Norwitz055ec242006-02-28 20:06:49 +00002556 part of an import statement).
Guido van Rossum1a5e21e2006-02-28 21:57:43 +00002557 The following objects have __context__ methods:
2558 - The built-in file type.
2559 - The thread.LockType type.
2560 - The following types defined by the threading module:
2561 Lock, RLock, Condition, Semaphore, BoundedSemaphore.
2562 - The decimal.Context class.
Guido van Rossumc2e20742006-02-27 22:32:47 +00002563
Marc-André Lemburgfe4b34c2006-02-19 15:22:22 +00002564- Fix the encodings package codec search function to only search
2565 inside its own package. Fixes problem reported in patch #1433198.
2566
2567 Note: Codec packages should implement and register their own
2568 codec search function. PEP 100 has the details.
2569
Tim Peters9ea89d22006-06-04 03:26:02 +00002570- PEP 353: Using ``Py_ssize_t`` as the index type.
2571
2572- ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` builds now add ``4*sizeof(size_t)`` bytes of debugging
2573 info to each allocated block, since the ``Py_ssize_t`` changes (PEP 353)
2574 now allow Python to make use of memory blocks exceeding 2**32 bytes for
2575 some purposes on 64-bit boxes. A ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` build was limited
2576 to 4-byte allocations before.
Martin v. Löwis18e16552006-02-15 17:27:45 +00002577
Neal Norwitzfc76d632006-01-10 06:03:13 +00002578- Patch #1400181, fix unicode string formatting to not use the locale.
2579 This is how string objects work. u'%f' could use , instead of .
2580 for the decimal point. Now both strings and unicode always use periods.
2581
Neal Norwitz671b9e32006-01-09 07:07:12 +00002582- Bug #1244610, #1392915, fix build problem on OpenBSD 3.7 and 3.8.
2583 configure would break checking curses.h.
2584
Georg Brandlcd4d1e82005-12-27 17:37:07 +00002585- Bug #959576: The pwd module is now builtin. This allows Python to be
2586 built on UNIX platforms without $HOME set.
2587
Neal Norwitzc10978f2005-12-19 06:07:16 +00002588- Bug #1072182, fix some potential problems if characters are signed.
2589

2591
Neal Norwitzdb83eb32005-12-18 05:29:30 +00002592- Bug #1378022, UTF-8 files with a leading BOM crashed the interpreter.
2593
Neal Norwitze7214a12005-12-18 05:03:17 +00002594- Support for converting hex strings to floats no longer works.
2595 This was not portable. float('0x3') now raises a ValueError.
2596
Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00002597- Patch #1382163: Expose Subversion revision number to Python. New C API

Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00002599 is now displayed in interactive prompt banner.
2600
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00002601- Implementation of PEP 341 - Unification of try/except and try/finally.
2602 "except" clauses can now be written together with a "finally" clause in
Neal Norwitz11ca77e2005-12-17 22:24:12 +00002603 one try statement instead of two nested ones. Patch #1355913.
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00002604
Hye-Shik Chang835b2432005-12-17 04:38:31 +00002605- Bug #1379994: Builtin unicode_escape and raw_unicode_escape codec

Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00002616
Marc-André Lemburga5bafc42005-10-23 13:43:40 +00002617- Replaced most Unicode charmap codecs with new ones using the
2618 new Unicode translate string feature in the builtin charmap
2619 codec; the codecs were created from the mapping tables available
2620 at ftp.unicode.org and contain a few updates (e.g. the Mac OS
2621 encodings now include a mapping for the Apple logo)
2622
Tim Peterse3547fd2005-12-16 23:13:57 +00002623- Added a few more codecs for Mac OS encodings

2642
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002643- All iterators now have a Boolean value of True. Formerly, some iterators
Raymond Hettinger6b27cda2005-09-24 21:23:05 +00002644 supported a __len__() method which evaluated to False when the iterator
2645 was empty.
2646
Guido van Rossum630db602005-09-20 18:49:54 +00002647- On 64-bit platforms, when __len__() returns a value that cannot be
2648 represented as a C int, raise OverflowError.
2649
Skip Montanarof8948ca2005-09-19 03:54:46 +00002650- test__locale is skipped on OS X < 10.4 (only partial locale support is

2667
Barry Warsawe2eca0b2005-08-15 18:14:19 +00002668- SF bug #900092: When tracing (e.g. for hotshot), restore 'return' events for
2669 exceptions that cause a function to exit.
2670
Raymond Hettinger9f1a6792005-07-31 01:16:36 +00002671- The implementation of set() and frozenset() was revised to use its
2672 own internal data structure. Memory consumption is reduced by 1/3
2673 and there are modest speed-ups as well. The API is unchanged.
2674
Tim Petersde7990b2005-07-17 23:45:23 +00002675- SF bug #1238681: freed pointer is used in longobject.c:long_pow().
2676
Michael W. Hudson0edc7a02005-07-12 10:21:19 +00002677- SF bug #1229429: PyObject_CallMethod failed to decrement some
2678 reference counts in some error exit cases.
2679
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002680- SF bug #1185883: Python's small-object memory allocator took over
2681 a block managed by the platform C library whenever a realloc specified
2682 a small new size. However, there's no portable way to know then how
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00002683 much of the address space following the pointer is valid, so there's no
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002684 portable way to copy data from the C-managed block into Python's
2685 small-object space without risking a memory fault. Python's small-object
2686 realloc now leaves such blocks under the control of the platform C
2687 realloc.
2688
Michael W. Hudsonb8963812005-07-05 15:21:58 +00002689- SF bug #1232517: An overflow error was not detected properly when

2691
Raymond Hettinger3296e692005-06-29 23:29:56 +00002692- SF bug #1224347: hex longs now print with lowercase letters just
2693 like their int counterparts.
2694
Michael W. Hudson188d4362005-06-20 16:52:57 +00002695- SF bug #1163563: the original fix for bug #1010677 ("thread Module
2696 Breaks PyGILState_Ensure()") broke badly in the case of multiple
2697 interpreter states; back out that fix and do a better job (see
2698 http://mail.python.org/pipermail/python-dev/2005-June/054258.html
2699 for a longer write-up of the problem).
2700
Michael W. Hudsondf888462005-06-03 14:41:55 +00002701- SF patch #1180995: marshal now uses a binary format by default when
2702 serializing floats.
2703
Michael W. Hudsonda85a902005-06-01 11:34:22 +00002704- SF patch #1181301: on platforms that appear to use IEEE 754 floats,
2705 the routines that promise to produce IEEE 754 binary representations
2706 of floats now simply copy bytes around.
2707
Skip Montanarobbf12ba2005-05-20 03:07:06 +00002708- bug #967182: disallow opening files with 'wU' or 'aU' as specified by PEP
2709 278.
2710
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00002711- patch #1109424: int, long, float, complex, and unicode now check for the
2712 proper magic slot for type conversions when subclassed. Previously the
2713 magic slot was ignored during conversion. Semantics now match the way
2714 subclasses of str always behaved. int/long/float, conversion of an instance
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00002715 to the base class has been moved to the proper nb_* magic slot and out of
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00002716 PyNumber_*().
Neal Norwitzcfba5f82006-04-25 05:05:03 +00002717 Thanks Walter Drwald.
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00002718
Barry Warsawc8d907c2005-04-19 23:43:40 +00002719- Descriptors defined in C with a PyGetSetDef structure, where the setter is
2720 NULL, now raise an AttributeError when attempting to set or delete the
2721 attribute. Previously a TypeError was raised, but this was inconsistent
2722 with the equivalent pure-Python implementation.
2723
Michael W. Hudson774479c2005-04-18 08:46:17 +00002724- It is now safe to call PyGILState_Release() before
2725 PyEval_InitThreads() (note that if there is reason to believe there
2726 are multiple threads around you still must call PyEval_InitThreads()
2727 before using the Python API; this fix is for extension modules that
2728 have no way of knowing if Python is multi-threaded yet).
2729
Michael W. Hudsone3afc592005-04-07 10:11:19 +00002730- Typing Ctrl-C whilst raw_input() was waiting in a build with threads
2731 disabled caused a crash.
2732
Michael W. Hudsonb330adf2005-03-31 09:35:44 +00002733- Bug #1165306: instancemethod_new allowed the creation of a method
2734 with im_class == im_self == NULL, which caused a crash when called.
2735
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002736- Move exception finalisation later in the shutdown process - this
Anthony Baxter12b6f6c2005-03-29 13:36:16 +00002737 fixes the crash seen in bug #1165761
2738
Raymond Hettinger96229b12005-03-11 06:49:40 +00002739- Added two new builtins, any() and all().
2740
Brett Cannon409d8f22005-03-05 06:47:57 +00002741- Defining a class with empty parentheses is now allowed
Brett Cannonf4189912005-04-09 02:30:16 +00002742 (e.g., ``class C(): pass`` is no longer a syntax error).
2743 Patch #1176012 added support to the 'parser' module and 'compiler' package
2744 (thanks to logistix for that added support).

2758
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002759- Bug #1074011: closing sys.std{out,err} now causes a flush() and
Martin v. Löwis8e3ca8a2005-01-23 09:41:49 +00002760 an ferror() call.
2761
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00002762- min() and max() now support key= arguments with the same meaning as in

2767
Raymond Hettingera422c342005-01-11 03:03:27 +00002768- set and frozenset objects can now be marshalled. SF #1098985.

Jeremy Hyltonab630502005-02-04 18:44:06 +00002773- The parser did not complain about future statements in illegal
2774 positions. It once again reports a syntax error if a future
2775 statement occurs after anything other than a doc string.
2776
Neil Schemenauercf52c072005-08-12 17:34:58 +00002777- Change the %s format specifier for str objects so that it returns a
2778 unicode instance if the argument is not an instance of basestring and
2779 calling __str__ on the argument returns a unicode instance.
2780
Tim Petersf4e69282006-02-27 17:15:31 +00002781- Patch #1413181: changed ``PyThreadState_Delete()`` to forget about the
2782 current thread state when the auto-GIL-state machinery knows about
2783 it (since the thread state is being deleted, continuing to remember it
2784 can't help, but can hurt if another thread happens to get created with
2785 the same thread id).

Georg Brandl828fdef2006-04-01 08:59:03 +00002996 a DB-API interface in the standard library. You'll need sqlite 3.0.8 or
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00002997 later to build this - if you have an earlier version, the C extension
Anthony Baxterc51ee692006-04-01 00:57:31 +00002998 module will not be built.

3023
Barry Warsaw4d90bbd2006-03-22 02:45:50 +00003024- email 4.0 package now integrated. This is largely the same as the email 3.0
3025 package that was included in Python 2.3, except that PEP 8 module names are
3026 now used (e.g. mail.message instead of email.Message). The MIME classes
3027 have been moved to a subpackage (e.g. email.mime.text instead of
3028 email.MIMEText). The old names are still supported for now. Several
3029 deprecated Message methods have been removed and lots of bugs have been
3030 fixed. More details can be found in the email package documentation.

3304
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00003305- Enhancements to the csv module:
3306
3307 + Dialects are now validated by the underlying C code, better
Georg Brandl7eb4b7d2005-07-22 21:49:32 +00003308 reflecting its capabilities, and improving its compliance with
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00003309 PEP 305.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00003310 + Dialect parameter parsing has been re-implemented to improve error
3311 reporting.
3312 + quotechar=None and quoting=QUOTE_NONE now work the way PEP 305
3313 dictates.
3314 + the parser now removes the escapechar prefix from escaped characters.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00003315 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the writer now tests for numeric
Andrew M. Kuchling6db67822006-04-18 14:04:57 +00003316 types, rather than any object that can be represented as a numeric.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00003317 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the reader now casts unquoted fields
3318 to floats.
Andrew McNamaraf69d94f2005-01-13 11:30:54 +00003319 + reader now allows \r characters to be quoted (previously it only allowed
3320 \n to be quoted).
Andrew McNamarac89f2842005-01-12 07:44:42 +00003321 + writer doublequote handling improved.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00003322 + Dialect classes passed to the module are no longer instantiated by
3323 the module before being parsed (the former validation scheme required
3324 this, but the mechanism was unreliable).
3325 + The dialect registry now contains instances of the internal
3326 C-coded dialect type, rather than references to python objects.
3327 + the internal c-coded dialect type is now immutable.
3328 + register_dialect now accepts the same keyword dialect specifications
3329 as the reader and writer, allowing the user to register dialects
3330 without first creating a dialect class.
3331 + a configurable limit to the size of parsed fields has been added -
3332 previously, an unmatched quote character could result in the entire
3333 file being read into the field buffer before an error was reported.
Andrew McNamara31d88962005-01-12 03:45:10 +00003334 + A new module method csv.field_size_limit() has been added that sets
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00003335 the parser field size limit (returning the former limit). The initial
3336 limit is 128kB.
Andrew McNamara7f2053e2005-01-12 11:17:16 +00003337 + A line_num attribute has been added to the reader object, which tracks
3338 the number of lines read from the source iterator. This is not
3339 the same as the number of records returned, as records can span
3340 multiple lines.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00003341 + reader and writer objects were not being registered with the cyclic-GC.
3342 This has been fixed.
3343
Brett Cannone6539c42005-01-08 02:43:53 +00003344- _DummyThread objects in the threading module now delete self.__block that is
3345 inherited from _Thread since it uses up a lock allocated by 'thread'. The
3346 lock primitives tend to be limited in number and thus should not be wasted on
3347 a _DummyThread object. Fixes bug #1089632.
3348
Raymond Hettinger97db05d2005-01-07 08:15:41 +00003349- The imghdr module now detects Exif files.
3350

3352 (Bug #951915).
3353
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00003354- locale.py now uses an updated locale alias table (built using
3355 Tools/i18n/makelocalealias.py, a tool to parse the X11 locale
3356 alias file); the encoding lookup was enhanced to use Python's
Andrew M. Kuchling88b85822005-08-23 00:57:07 +00003357 encoding alias table.
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00003358
Raymond Hettinger3557f422004-12-07 12:02:02 +00003359- moved deprecated modules to Lib/lib-old: whrandom, tzparse, statcache.
3360
Raymond Hettingera6b45cc2004-12-07 07:05:57 +00003361- the pickle module no longer accepts the deprecated None option in the
3362 args tuple returned by __reduce__().
3363
Brett Cannon84667c02004-12-07 03:25:18 +00003364- optparse now optionally imports gettext. This allows its use in setup.py.
3365

3371
Raymond Hettingerf3fa9462004-12-05 01:58:09 +00003372- the filecmp module no longer uses the deprecated use_statcache argument.
3373
Raymond Hettinger664347b2004-12-04 21:21:53 +00003374- unittest.TestCase.run() and unittest.TestSuite.run() can now be successfully
3375 extended or overridden by subclasses. Formerly, the subclassed method would
3376 be ignored by the rest of the module. (Bug #1078905).
3377
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00003378- heapq.nsmallest() and heapq.nlargest() now support key= arguments with
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00003379 the same meaning as in list.sort().
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00003380
Walter Dörwald36733692004-12-22 12:50:50 +00003381- Bug #1076985: ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` now calls ``read()`` only
3382 once when a size argument is given. This prevents a buffer overflow in the
3383 tokenizer with very long source lines.
3384
Barry Warsaw538561e2006-01-01 21:48:54 +00003385- Bug #1083110: ``zlib.decompress.flush()`` would segfault if called
3386 immediately after creating the object, without any intervening
3387 ``.decompress()`` calls.
Andrew M. Kuchling3b585b32004-12-28 20:10:48 +00003388
Skip Montanaro05885812005-01-16 20:48:27 +00003389- The reconvert.quote function can now emit triple-quoted strings. The

Greg Ward40407942005-03-05 02:53:17 +00003395- Bug #1149508: ``textwrap`` now handles hyphenated numbers (eg. "2004-03-05")
3396 correctly.
3397
Walter Dörwaldbc8e6422005-04-21 21:32:03 +00003398- Partial fixes for SF bugs #1163244 and #1175396: If a chunk read by
3399 ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` has a trailing "\r", read one more
3400 character even if the user has passed a size parameter to get a proper
3401 line ending. Remove the special handling of a "\r\n" that has been split
3402 between two lines.
3403
Walter Dörwalda47d1c02005-08-30 10:23:14 +00003404- Bug #1251300: On UCS-4 builds the "unicode-internal" codec will now complain
3405 about illegal code points. The codec now supports PEP 293 style error
3406 handlers.
3407
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00003408- Bug #1235646: ``codecs.StreamRecoder.next()`` now reencodes the data it reads
Walter Dörwaldc5238b82005-09-01 11:56:53 +00003409 from the input stream, so that the output is a byte string in the correct
3410 encoding instead of a unicode string.

3413 considering it exactly like a '*'.
3414
Walter Dörwald007f8df2005-10-09 19:42:27 +00003415- Bug #1245379: Add "unicode-1-1-utf-7" as an alias for "utf-7" to
3416 ``encodings.aliases``.
Gustavo Niemeyer6fa0c5a2005-09-14 08:54:39 +00003417
Walter Dörwald09f0dd52005-11-21 19:10:07 +00003418- ` uu.encode()`` and ``uu.decode()`` now support unicode filenames.
3419
Gustavo Niemeyer548148812006-01-31 18:34:13 +00003420- Patch #1413711: Certain patterns of differences were making difflib
3421 touch the recursion limit.
3422
Walter Dörwald58917a62006-03-31 15:26:22 +00003423- Bug #947906: An object oriented interface has been added to the calendar
3424 module. It's possible to generate HTML calendar now and the module can be
Walter Dörwald48d5e502006-04-01 07:57:00 +00003425 called as a script (e.g. via ``python -mcalendar``). Localized month and
3426 weekday names can be ouput (even if an exotic encoding is used) using
3427 special classes that use unicode.

3453
Brett Cannon08cd5982005-04-24 22:26:38 +00003454- EXTRA_CFLAGS has been introduced as an environment variable to hold compiler
3455 flags that change binary compatibility. Changes were also made to
3456 distutils.sysconfig to also use the environment variable when used during
Martin v. Löwisd7c795e2005-04-25 07:14:03 +00003457 compilation of the interpreter and of C extensions through distutils.

Bob Ippolitoed233462005-03-29 13:47:59 +00003459- SF patch 1171735: Darwin 8's headers are anal about POSIX compliance,
3460 and linking has changed (prebinding is now deprecated, and libcc_dynamic
3461 no longer exists). This configure patch makes things right.
3462
Martin v. Löwise2713be2005-03-08 15:03:08 +00003463- Bug #1158607: Build with --disable-unicode again.
3464
Brett Cannon46d96232005-02-16 00:07:19 +00003465- spwdmodule.c is built only if either HAVE_GETSPNAM or HAVE_HAVE_GETSPENT is
3466 defined. Discovered as a result of not being able to build on OS X.
3467
Brett Cannon516592f2004-12-07 00:42:59 +00003468- setup.py now uses the directories specified in LDFLAGS using the -L option
3469 and in CPPFLAGS using the -I option for adding library and include
3470 directories, respectively, for compiling extension modules against. This has
3471 led to the core being compiled using the values in CPPFLAGS. It also removes
3472 the need for the special-casing of both DarwinPorts and Fink for darwin since
3473 the proper directories can be specified in LDFLAGS (``-L/sw/lib`` for Fink,
3474 ``-L/opt/local/lib`` for DarwinPorts) and CPPFLAGS (``-I/sw/include`` for
3475 Fink, ``-I/opt/local/include`` for DarwinPorts).
3476
Brett Cannon43802422005-02-10 20:48:03 +00003477- Test in configure.in that checks for tzset no longer dependent on tm->tm_zone
3478 to exist in the struct (not required by either ISO C nor the UNIX 2 spec).
3479 Tests for sanity in tzname when HAVE_TZNAME defined were also defined.
3480 Closes bug #1096244. Thanks Gregory Bond.

3483-----
3484
Tim Petersc9d78aa2006-03-26 23:27:58 +00003485- ``PyMem_{Del, DEL}`` and ``PyMem_{Free, FREE}`` no longer map to
3486 ``PyObject_{Free, FREE}``. They map to the system ``free()`` now. If memory
3487 is obtained via the ``PyObject_`` family, it must be released via the
3488 ``PyObject_`` family, and likewise for the ``PyMem_`` family. This has
3489 always been officially true, but when Python's small-object allocator was
3490 introduced, an attempt was made to cater to a few extension modules
3491 discovered at the time that obtained memory via ``PyObject_New`` but
3492 released it via ``PyMem_DEL``. It's years later, and if such code still
3493 exists it will fail now (probably with segfaults, but calling wrong
3494 low-level memory management functions can yield many symptoms).
3495
Raymond Hettingerbeb31012005-08-16 03:47:52 +00003496- Added a C API for set and frozenset objects.
3497

3499
Walter Dörwaldd1c1e102005-10-06 20:29:57 +00003500- Patch #1313939: PyUnicode_DecodeCharmap() accepts a unicode string as the
3501 mapping argument now. This string is used as a mapping table. Byte values
3502 greater than the length of the string and 0xFFFE are treated as undefined
3503 mappings.
