Neal Norwitzff4b63b2006-08-04 04:50:21 +0000330
331Core and builtins
332-----------------
333
Neal Norwitz24b6f202006-09-05 04:43:56 +0000334- Fix infinite recursion when subclassing long and overriding __hash__.
335
336- Fix concatenation (+=) of long strings.
337
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +0000338- Unicode objects will no longer raise an exception when being
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000339 compared equal or unequal to a string and a UnicodeDecodeError
340 exception occurs, e.g. as result of a decoding failure.
Neal Norwitz56423e52006-08-13 18:11:08 +0000341
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +0000342 Instead, the equal (==) and unequal (!=) comparison operators will
343 now issue a UnicodeWarning and interpret the two objects as
344 unequal. The UnicodeWarning can be filtered as desired using
345 the warning framework, e.g. silenced completely, turned into an
346 exception, logged, etc.
347
348 Note that compare operators other than equal and unequal will still
349 raise UnicodeDecodeError exceptions as they've always done.
Neal Norwitz8a87f5d2006-08-12 17:03:09 +0000350
Marc-André Lemburg757ea272006-08-14 11:44:34 +0000351- Fix segfault when doing string formatting on subclasses of long.
352
353- Fix bug related to __len__ functions using values > 2**32 on 64-bit machines
354 with new-style classes.
355
356- Fix bug related to __len__ functions returning negative values with
357 classic classes.
358
359- Patch #1538606, Fix __index__() clipping. There were some problems
360 discovered with the API and how integers that didn't fit into Py_ssize_t
361 were handled. This patch attempts to provide enough alternatives
362 to effectively use __index__.
363
Martin v. Löwisab2f8f72006-08-09 07:57:39 +0000364- Bug #1536021: __hash__ may now return long int; the final hash
365 value is obtained by invoking hash on the long int.
366
Thomas Hellerab1049c2006-08-08 17:37:00 +0000367- Bug #1536786: buffer comparison could emit a RuntimeWarning.
368
Georg Brandl7e3ba2a2006-08-06 08:23:54 +0000369- Bug #1535165: fixed a segfault in input() and raw_input() when
370 sys.stdin is closed.
371
Thomas Heller74d36f02006-08-04 18:17:40 +0000372- On Windows, the PyErr_Warn function is now exported from
373 the Python dll again.
374
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +0000375- Bug #1191458: tracing over for loops now produces a line event
376 on each iteration. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc
377 magic number. This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5c1
378 will be regenerated.
379
Neal Norwitz0cbd8052006-08-04 05:09:28 +0000380- Bug #1333982: string/number constants were inappropriately stored
381 in the byte code and co_consts even if they were not used, ie
382 immediately popped off the stack.
383
Georg Brandle9462c72006-08-04 18:03:37 +0000384- Fixed a reference-counting problem in property().
385

387Library
388-------
389
Neil Schemenauer4c6b0d52006-08-16 23:38:05 +0000390- Fix a bug in the ``compiler`` package that caused invalid code to be
391 generated for generator expressions.
392
Marc-André Lemburg574cfea2006-08-16 16:11:01 +0000393- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0. The change to
394 keep it programmatically in sync with the Python version running
395 the code (introduced in 2.5b3) has been reverted. It will continue
396 to be maintained manually as static string literal.
397
Andrew M. Kuchlingc13324e2006-08-16 17:11:18 +0000398- If the Python part of a ctypes callback function returns None,
Thomas Hellerb4a0cf12006-08-16 15:10:12 +0000399 and this cannot be converted to the required C type, an exception is
400 printed with PyErr_WriteUnraisable. Before this change, the C
Andrew M. Kuchlingc13324e2006-08-16 17:11:18 +0000401 callback returned arbitrary values to the calling code.
Thomas Hellerb4a0cf12006-08-16 15:10:12 +0000402
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000403- The __repr__ method of a NULL ctypes.py_object() no longer raises
Thomas Hellerb0aa98f2006-08-16 14:07:44 +0000404 an exception.
405
Tim Peterscbdd3502006-09-05 01:47:53 +0000406- uuid.UUID now has a bytes_le attribute. This returns the UUID in
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000407 little-endian byte order for Windows. In addition, uuid.py gained some
Anthony Baxter58179592006-08-16 13:08:25 +0000408 workarounds for clocks with low resolution, to stop the code yielding
409 duplicate UUIDs.
410
Kurt B. Kaiserd112bc72006-08-16 05:01:42 +0000411- Patch #1540892: site.py Quitter() class attempts to close sys.stdin
412 before raising SystemExit, allowing IDLE to honor quit() and exit().
413
Neal Norwitzbf8c1952006-08-15 04:14:57 +0000414- Bug #1224621: make tabnanny recognize IndentationErrors raised by tokenize.
415
Georg Brandl7a1af772006-08-14 21:55:28 +0000416- Patch #1536071: trace.py should now find the full module name of a
417 file correctly even on Windows.
418
Georg Brandl0a7d1bb2006-08-11 07:26:10 +0000419- logging's atexit hook now runs even if the rest of the module has
420 already been cleaned up.
421
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000422- Bug #1112549, fix DoS attack on cgi.FieldStorage.
Guido van Rossum133f4e42006-08-10 17:42:50 +0000423
Neal Norwitzff4b63b2006-08-04 04:50:21 +0000424- Bug #1531405, format_exception no longer raises an exception if
425 str(exception) raised an exception.
426
Neil Schemenauer06ded092006-08-04 16:20:30 +0000427- Fix a bug in the ``compiler`` package that caused invalid code to be
428 generated for nested functions.

Georg Brandl3335a7a2006-08-14 21:42:55 +0000438- Patch #1535500: fix segfault in BZ2File.writelines and make sure it
439 raises the correct exceptions.
440
Thomas Heller1ce433e2006-08-14 16:20:04 +0000441- Patch # 1536908: enable building ctypes on OpenBSD/AMD64. The
442 '-no-stack-protector' compiler flag for OpenBSD has been removed.
443
Thomas Heller86720042006-08-14 11:17:48 +0000444- Patch #1532975 was applied, which fixes Bug #1533481: ctypes now
445 uses the _as_parameter_ attribute when objects are passed to foreign
446 function calls. The ctypes version number was changed to 1.0.1.
447
Bob Ippolitoe6c9f982006-08-04 23:59:21 +0000448- Bug #1530559, struct.pack raises TypeError where it used to convert.
449 Passing float arguments to struct.pack when integers are expected
450 now triggers a DeprecationWarning.
451
Neal Norwitzff4b63b2006-08-04 04:50:21 +0000452

500Core and builtins
501-----------------
502
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000503- _PyWeakref_GetWeakrefCount() now returns a Py_ssize_t; it previously
Neal Norwitzc5e060d2006-08-02 06:14:22 +0000504 returned a long (see PEP 353).
505
Neal Norwitzf71ec5a2006-07-30 06:57:04 +0000506- Bug #1515471: string.replace() accepts character buffers again.
507
Neal Norwitz07aadb12006-07-30 06:55:48 +0000508- Add PyErr_WarnEx() so C code can pass the stacklevel to warnings.warn().
509 This provides the proper warning for struct.pack().
510 PyErr_Warn() is now deprecated in favor of PyErr_WarnEx().
511
Neal Norwitz0d62a062006-07-30 06:53:31 +0000512- Patch #1531113: Fix augmented assignment with yield expressions.
513 Also fix a SystemError when trying to assign to yield expressions.
514
Phillip J. Ebyf7575d02006-07-28 21:12:07 +0000515- Bug #1529871: The speed enhancement patch #921466 broke Python's compliance
516 with PEP 302. This was fixed by adding an ``imp.NullImporter`` type that is
517 used in ``sys.path_importer_cache`` to cache non-directory paths and avoid
518 excessive filesystem operations during imports.
519
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +0000520- Bug #1521947: When checking for overflow, ``PyOS_strtol()`` used some
521 operations on signed longs that are formally undefined by C.
522 Unfortunately, at least one compiler now cares about that, so complicated
523 the code to make that compiler happy again.
524
Martin v. Löwis982e9fe2006-07-24 12:54:17 +0000525- Bug #1524310: Properly report errors from FindNextFile in os.listdir.

535 had more than 255 blank lines.
536
Georg Brandl9dceedb2006-07-12 15:31:17 +0000537- Patch #1521179: Python now accepts the standard options ``--help`` and
538 ``--version`` as well as ``/?`` on Windows.
539
Andrew M. Kuchling93c928e2006-07-26 17:19:39 +0000540- Bug #1520864: unpacking singleton tuples in a 'for' loop (for x, in) works
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000541 again. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc magic number.
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +0000542 This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5b3 will be regenerated.
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000543
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +0000544- Bug #1524317: Compiling Python ``--without-threads`` failed.
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000545 The Python core compiles again, and, in a build without threads, the
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +0000546 new ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dictionary with one entry,
547 mapping the faux "thread id" 0 to the current frame.
548

556 for stream decoder, but final=True for the decode function.
557
Georg Brandl07fec3a2006-08-01 18:49:24 +0000558- os.urandom no longer masks unrelated exceptions like SystemExit or
559 KeyboardInterrupt.
560
Tim Peters4643c2f2006-08-10 22:45:34 +0000561- Bug #1525866: Don't copy directory stat times in

563
Georg Brandle34ac7c2006-07-30 11:07:23 +0000564- Bug #1002398: The documentation for os.path.sameopenfile now correctly
565 refers to file descriptors, not file objects.
566
Tim Peterscbdd3502006-09-05 01:47:53 +0000567- The renaming of the xml package to xmlcore, and the import hackery done
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000568 to make it appear at both names, has been removed. Bug #1511497,
Fred Drakefbdeaad2006-07-29 16:56:15 +0000569 #1513611, and probably others.
570
Georg Brandledd9b0d2006-07-29 09:33:26 +0000571- Bug #1441397: The compiler module now recognizes module and function
572 docstrings correctly as it did in Python 2.4.
573
Tim Peters6f681472006-07-27 23:44:37 +0000574- Bug #1529297: The rewrite of doctest for Python 2.4 unintentionally
575 lost that tests are sorted by name before being run. This rarely
576 matters for well-written tests, but can create baffling symptoms if
577 side effects from one test to the next affect outcomes. ``DocTestFinder``
578 has been changed to sort the list of tests it returns.
579
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000580- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0, and is now kept

584
Georg Brandldb232dc2006-08-20 13:15:43 +0000585- Bug #1459963: urllib and urllib2 now normalize HTTP header names with

597
Martin v. Löwis426f4a12006-07-18 17:46:31 +0000598- Patch #1524429: Use repr() instead of backticks in Tkinter again.
599
Brett Cannoncaebe222006-07-18 04:41:36 +0000600- Bug #1520914: Change time.strftime() to accept a zero for any position in its
601 argument tuple. For arguments where zero is illegal, the value is forced to
602 the minimum value that is correct. This is to support an undocumented but
603 common way people used to fill in inconsequential information in the time
604 tuple pre-2.4.
605
Bob Ippolito5ea4bf12006-07-15 16:53:15 +0000606- Patch #1220874: Update the binhex module for Mach-O.
607
Barry Warsawb110bad2006-07-21 14:51:07 +0000608- The email package has improved RFC 2231 support, specifically for
609 recognizing the difference between encoded (name*0*=<blah>) and non-encoded
610 (name*0=<blah>) parameter continuations. This may change the types of
611 values returned from email.message.Message.get_param() and friends.
612 Specifically in some cases where non-encoded continuations were used,
613 get_param() used to return a 3-tuple of (None, None, string) whereas now it
614 will just return the string (since non-encoded continuations don't have
615 charset and language parts).
616
617 Also, whereas % values were decoded in all parameter continuations, they are
618 now only decoded in encoded parameter parts.
619
Ronald Oussoren3075e162006-07-25 20:28:55 +0000620- Bug #1517990: IDLE keybindings on MacOS X now work correctly
621
622- Bug #1517996: IDLE now longer shows the default Tk menu when a
623 path browser, class browser or debugger is the frontmost window on MacOS X
624
Barry Warsaw00decd72006-07-27 23:43:15 +0000625- Patch #1520294: Support for getset and member descriptors in types.py,
626 inspect.py, and pydoc.py. Specifically, this allows for querying the type
627 of an object against these built-in types and more importantly, for getting
628 their docstrings printed in the interactive interpreter's help() function.

635 a socket operation on a socket with a timeout, the exception will be
636 caught correctly. Previously, the exception was not caught.
637
Thomas Heller1393d6a2006-07-28 21:43:20 +0000638- Patch #1529514: The _ctypes extension is now compiled on more

640
Tim Peters9cab5932006-07-28 00:30:00 +0000641- The ``__reduce__()`` method of the new ``collections.defaultdict`` had

651 arrays, without the need to check the array size before.
652
Thomas Heller6e1ad2e2006-07-13 17:05:13 +0000653- Bug #1521375: When the code in ctypes.util.find_library was

656
Thomas Heller47d7a062006-07-12 08:43:47 +0000657- Bug #1467450: On Mac OS X 10.3, RTLD_GLOBAL is now used as the

676
Georg Brandl4793aa32006-07-28 18:31:39 +0000677- Patch #1529686: The standard tests ``test_defaultdict``, ``test_iterlen``,

Neal Norwitzfb48afa2006-07-08 05:31:37 +0000722- Bug #1519018: 'as' is now validated properly in import statements.
723
Neal Norwitz28746ab2006-07-09 22:14:42 +0000724- On 64 bit systems, int literals that use less than 64 bits are
725 now ints rather than longs.
726
Neal Norwitzed657552006-07-10 00:04:44 +0000727- Bug #1512814, Fix incorrect lineno's when code at module scope
728 started after line 256.
729
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +0000730- New function ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dict mapping thread
731 id to topmost thread stack frame. This is for expert use, and is
732 especially useful for debugging application deadlocks. The functionality
733 was previously available in Fazal Majid's ``threadframe`` extension
734 module, but it wasn't possible to do this in a wholly threadsafe way from
735 an extension.

755 be treated as the value they contain, instead.
756
Martin v. Löwisede77f52006-07-03 13:01:35 +0000757- Bug #822974: Honor timeout in telnetlib.{expect,read_until}

782
Brett Cannon53ab5b72006-06-22 16:49:14 +0000783- Bug #1510580: The 'warnings' module improperly required that a Warning
784 category be either a types.ClassType and a subclass of Warning. The proper
785 check is just that it is a subclass with Warning as the documentation states.
786
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +0000787- The compiler module now correctly compiles the new try-except-finally

Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +0000802- #1494314: Fix a regression with high-numbered sockets in 2.4.3. This
803 means that select() on sockets > FD_SETSIZE (typically 1024) work again.
804 The patch makes sockets use poll() internally where available.
Anthony Baxter93ab5fa2006-07-11 02:04:09 +0000805
Thomas Hellerb9cb84f2006-07-10 11:17:37 +0000806- Assigning None to pointer type fields in ctypes structures possible
807 overwrote the wrong fields, this is fixed now.
808
809- Fixed a segfault in _ctypes when ctypes.wintypes were imported
810 on non-Windows platforms.
811
812- Bug #1518190: The ctypes.c_void_p constructor now accepts any
813 integer or long, without range checking.
814
815- Patch #1517790: It is now possible to use custom objects in the ctypes
816 foreign function argtypes sequence as long as they provide a from_param
817 method, no longer is it required that the object is a ctypes type.
818
819- The '_ctypes' extension module now works when Python is configured
820 with the --without-threads option.
821
Martin v. Löwisee1e06d2006-07-02 18:44:00 +0000822- Bug #1513646: os.access on Windows now correctly determines write

837
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +0000838- 'configure' now detects the zlib library the same way as distutils.
Thomas Woutersfc34f6c2006-07-06 10:48:28 +0000839 Previously, the slight difference could cause compilation errors of the
840 'zlib' module on systems with more than one version of zlib.
841
Martin v. Löwis4cbd05c2006-07-06 07:05:21 +0000842- The MSI compileall step was fixed to also support a TARGETDIR

873Core and builtins
874-----------------
875
Georg Brandla56b9152006-06-19 06:35:54 +0000876- Patch #1507676: Error messages returned by invalid abstract object operations
877 (such as iterating over an integer) have been improved and now include the
878 type of the offending object to help with debugging.
879
Brett Cannonea3912b2006-06-13 21:46:41 +0000880- Bug #992017: A classic class that defined a __coerce__() method that returned
881 its arguments swapped would infinitely recurse and segfault the interpreter.
882
Neal Norwitz909eb122006-06-12 02:13:21 +0000883- Fix the socket tests so they can be run concurrently.
884
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +0000885- Removed 5 integers from C frame objects (PyFrameObject).
Vinay Sajip28e57612006-07-01 10:45:20 +0000886 f_nlocals, f_ncells, f_nfreevars, f_stack_size, f_restricted.
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +0000887
Brett Cannon22565aa2006-06-09 22:31:23 +0000888- Bug #532646: object.__call__() will continue looking for the __call__
889 attribute on objects until one without one is found. This leads to recursion
890 when you take a class and set its __call__ attribute to an instance of the
891 class. Originally fixed for classic classes, but this fix is for new-style.
892 Removes the infinite_rec_3 crasher.
893
Georg Brandl24250812006-06-09 18:45:48 +0000894- The string and unicode methods startswith() and endswith() now accept
895 a tuple of prefixes/suffixes to look for. Implements RFE #1491485.
896
Brett Cannonde3b0522006-06-08 17:00:45 +0000897- Buffer objects, at the C level, never used the char buffer
898 implementation even when the char buffer for the wrapped object was
899 explicitly requested (originally returned the read or write buffer).
900 Now a TypeError is raised if the char buffer is not present but is
901 requested.
902
Georg Brandlddbaa662006-06-04 21:56:52 +0000903- Patch #1346214: Statements like "if 0: suite" are now again optimized
904 away like they were in Python 2.4.
905
Georg Brandlb7c8f542006-05-27 12:30:25 +0000906- Builtin exceptions are now full-blown new-style classes instead of
907 instances pretending to be classes, which speeds up exception handling
908 by about 80% in comparison to 2.5a2.
909
Martin v. Löwisd004fc82006-05-27 08:36:52 +0000910- Patch #1494554: Update unicodedata.numeric and unicode.isnumeric to
911 Unicode 4.1.
912
Georg Brandlf4ef1162006-05-26 18:03:31 +0000913- Patch #921466: sys.path_importer_cache is now used to cache valid and
914 invalid file paths for the built-in import machinery which leads to
915 fewer open calls on startup.

Tim Peters696cf432006-05-24 21:10:40 +0000917- Patch #1442927: ``long(str, base)`` is now up to 6x faster for non-power-
918 of-2 bases. The largest speedup is for inputs with about 1000 decimal
919 digits. Conversion from non-power-of-2 bases remains quadratic-time in
920 the number of input digits (it was and remains linear-time for bases
921 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32).
922
Tim Petersb713ec22006-05-23 18:45:30 +0000923- Bug #1334662: ``int(string, base)`` could deliver a wrong answer
924 when ``base`` was not 2, 4, 8, 10, 16 or 32, and ``string`` represented
925 an integer close to ``sys.maxint``. This was repaired by patch
926 #1335972, which also gives a nice speedup.
927
Richard Jonescebbefc2006-05-23 18:28:17 +0000928- Patch #1337051: reduced size of frame objects.
929
930- PyErr_NewException now accepts a tuple of base classes as its
931 "base" parameter.
932
Richard Jones7c88dcc2006-05-23 10:37:38 +0000933- Patch #876206: function call speedup by retaining allocated frame
934 objects.
935
Georg Brandl7b90e162006-05-18 07:01:27 +0000936- Bug #1462152: file() now checks more thoroughly for invalid mode
937 strings and removes a possible "U" before passing the mode to the
938 C library function.
939

943
Martin v. Löwis879768d2006-05-11 13:28:43 +0000944- WindowsError now has two error code attributes: errno, which carries
945 the error values from errno.h, and winerror, which carries the error
946 values from winerror.h. Previous versions put the winerror.h values
947 (from GetLastError()) into the errno attribute.
948
Martin v. Löwis77736712006-05-04 05:51:03 +0000949- Patch #1475845: Raise IndentationError for unexpected indent.

952
Tim Peters44bd9862006-06-01 13:49:23 +0000953- Patch #1497053 & bug #1275608: Exceptions occurring in ``__eq__()``
954 methods were always silently ignored by dictionaries when comparing keys.
955 They are now passed through (except when using the C API function
956 ``PyDict_GetItem()``, whose semantics did not change).
957
958- Bug #1456209: In some obscure cases it was possible for a class with a
959 custom ``__eq__()`` method to confuse dict internals when class instances
960 were used as a dict's keys and the ``__eq__()`` method mutated the dict.
961 No, you don't have any code that did this ;-)

976 been renamed to _functools and a functools Python wrapper module added.
977 This provides a home for additional function related utilities that are
978 not specifically about functional programming. See PEP 309.

991 (up to the system limit of 32K characters).
992
993- Use Win32 API to implement os.{access,chdir,chmod,mkdir,remove,rename,rmdir,utime}.
994 As a result, these functions now raise WindowsError instead of OSError.
995
Tim Peters7a822da2006-05-25 21:50:17 +0000996- ``time.clock()`` on Win64 should use the high-performance Windows

998 Windows platforms).
999
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +00001000- Calling Tk_Init twice is refused if the first call failed as that

1018 Fixes SF bug 1493322 (pybsddb bug 1184012).
1019
Gregory P. Smithff7d9912006-06-08 05:17:08 +00001020- bsddb: the bsddb.dbtables Modify method now raises the proper error and

1058
Tim Peters43898b42006-06-14 04:09:25 +00001059- ``difflib``'s ``SequenceMatcher.get_matching_blocks()`` was changed to
1060 guarantee that adjacent triples in the return list always describe
1061 non-adjacent blocks. Previously, a pair of matching blocks could end
1062 up being described by multiple adjacent triples that formed a partition
1063 of the matching pair.
1064
Greg Ward0e0c9f42006-06-11 16:24:11 +00001065- Bug #1498146: fix optparse to handle Unicode strings in option help,

1072
Andrew M. Kuchling0873b112006-06-09 16:46:51 +00001073- The wsgiref package has been added to the standard library.
1074
Nick Coghlan676725d2006-06-08 13:54:49 +00001075- The functions update_wrapper() and wraps() have been added to the functools
1076 module. These make it easier to copy relevant metadata from the original
1077 function when writing wrapper functions.
1078

1080 ``doctest.is_private()`` function, both deprecated in 2.4, were removed.
Tim Petersbf0400a2006-06-05 01:43:03 +00001081
Martin v. Löwis3f767792006-06-04 19:36:28 +00001082- Patch #1359618: Speed up charmap encoder by using a trie structure
1083 for lookup.
1084
Tim Petersd609b1a2006-06-02 23:22:51 +00001085- The functions in the ``pprint`` module now sort dictionaries by key
1086 before computing the display. Before 2.5, ``pprint`` sorted a dictionary
1087 if and only if its display required more than one line, although that
1088 wasn't documented. The new behavior increases predictability; e.g.,
1089 using ``pprint.pprint(a_dict)`` in a doctest is now reliable.
1090
Georg Brandlfd9a4b12006-05-29 20:57:01 +00001091- Patch #1497027: try HTTP digest auth before basic auth in urllib2

1109 tarfiles.
1110
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +00001111- Patch #721464: pdb.Pdb instances can now be given explicit stdin and

1167-----------------
1168
Thomas Heller1b046642006-04-18 18:51:06 +00001169- Bug #1465834: 'bdist_wininst preinstall script support' was fixed
1170 by converting these apis from macros into exported functions again:
1171
1172 PyParser_SimpleParseFile PyParser_SimpleParseString PyRun_AnyFile
1173 PyRun_AnyFileEx PyRun_AnyFileFlags PyRun_File PyRun_FileEx
1174 PyRun_FileFlags PyRun_InteractiveLoop PyRun_InteractiveOne
1175 PyRun_SimpleFile PyRun_SimpleFileEx PyRun_SimpleString
1176 PyRun_String Py_CompileString
1177
Martin v. Löwis45294a92006-04-18 06:24:08 +00001178- Under COUNT_ALLOCS, types are not necessarily immortal anymore.
1179
Martin v. Löwis19ab6c92006-04-16 18:55:50 +00001180- All uses of PyStructSequence_InitType have been changed to initialize
1181 the type objects only once, even if the interpreter is initialized
1182 multiple times.
1183
Neal Norwitz61546162006-04-14 05:20:28 +00001184- Bug #1454485, array.array('u') could crash the interpreter. This was
1185 due to PyArgs_ParseTuple(args, 'u#', ...) trying to convert buffers (strings)
1186 to unicode when it didn't make sense. 'u#' now requires a unicode string.
1187
1188- Py_UNICODE is unsigned. It was always documented as unsigned, but
1189 due to a bug had a signed value in previous versions.
1190
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001191- Patch #837242: ``id()`` of any Python object always gives a positive
1192 number now, which might be a long integer. ``PyLong_FromVoidPtr`` and
1193 ``PyLong_AsVoidPtr`` have been changed accordingly. Note that it has
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001194 never been correct to implement a ``__hash()__`` method that returns the
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001195 ``id()`` of an object:
Martin v. Löwis0bc2ab92006-04-10 20:28:17 +00001196
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001197 def __hash__(self):
1198 return id(self) # WRONG
1199
1200 because a hash result must be a (short) Python int but it was always
1201 possible for ``id()`` to return a Python long. However, because ``id()``
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001202 could return negative values before, on a 32-bit box an ``id()`` result
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001203 was always usable as a hash value before this patch. That's no longer
1204 necessarily so.
1205
1206- Python on OS X 10.3 and above now uses dlopen() (via dynload_shlib.c)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001207 to load extension modules and now provides the dl module. As a result,
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001208 sys.setdlopenflags() now works correctly on these systems. (SF patch
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001209 #1454844)
1210
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00001211- Patch #1463867: enhanced garbage collection to allow cleanup of cycles
1212 involving generators that have paused outside of any ``try`` or ``with``
1213 blocks. (In 2.5a1, a paused generator that was part of a reference
1214 cycle could not be garbage collected, regardless of whether it was
1215 paused in a ``try`` or ``with`` block.)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001216
Anthony Baxter51bcb682006-04-05 14:51:42 +00001217Extension Modules
1218-----------------
1219
Martin v. Löwis7e75f1a2006-04-15 08:35:59 +00001220- Patch #1191065: Fix preprocessor problems on systems where recvfrom

1330
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00001331- The test_contextlib test in 2.5a1 wasn't actually run unless you ran
1332 it separately and by hand. It also wasn't cleaning up its changes to
1333 the current Decimal context.
1334
Thomas Woutersabd08882006-04-26 15:53:30 +00001335- regrtest.py now has a -M option to run tests that test the new limits of
1336 containers, on 64-bit architectures. Running these tests is only sensible
1337 on 64-bit machines with more than two gigabytes of memory. The argument
1338 passed is the maximum amount of memory for the tests to use.

Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00001364Core and builtins
1365-----------------
1366
Nick Coghlan43832302006-04-23 17:04:07 +00001367- PEP 338: -m command line switch now delegates to runpy.run_module
1368 allowing it to support modules in packages and zipfiles
1369
Martin v. Löwisc661b882006-04-20 04:54:23 +00001370- On Windows, .DLL is not an accepted file name extension for
1371 extension modules anymore; extensions are only found if they
1372 end in .PYD.
1373
Martin v. Löwisea62d252006-04-03 10:56:49 +00001374- Bug #1421664: sys.stderr.encoding is now set to the same value as
1375 sys.stdout.encoding.
1376
Neal Norwitz92e212f2006-04-03 04:48:37 +00001377- __import__ accepts keyword arguments.
1378
Georg Brandlccadf842006-03-31 18:54:53 +00001379- Patch #1460496: round() now accepts keyword arguments.
1380
Anthony Baxter262c00a2006-03-30 10:53:17 +00001381- Fixed bug #1459029 - unicode reprs were double-escaped.
1382
Hye-Shik Changd478f342006-03-23 12:32:36 +00001383- Patch #1396919: The system scope threads are reenabled on FreeBSD
1384 5.4 and later versions.
1385
Neal Norwitze98ccf62006-03-23 05:39:47 +00001386- Bug #1115379: Compiling a Unicode string with an encoding declaration
1387 now gives a SyntaxError.
1388
Georg Brandlabd1ff82006-03-18 07:59:59 +00001389- Previously, Python code had no easy way to access the contents of a
1390 cell object. Now, a ``cell_contents`` attribute has been added
1391 (closes patch #1170323).
1392
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001393- Patch #1123430: Python's small-object allocator now returns an arena to
1394 the system ``free()`` when all memory within an arena becomes unused
1395 again. Prior to Python 2.5, arenas (256KB chunks of memory) were never
1396 freed. Some applications will see a drop in virtual memory size now,
1397 especially long-running applications that, from time to time, temporarily
1398 use a large number of small objects. Note that when Python returns an
1399 arena to the platform C's ``free()``, there's no guarantee that the
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00001400 platform C library will in turn return that memory to the operating system.
1401 The effect of the patch is to stop making that impossible, and in tests it
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001402 appears to be effective at least on Microsoft C and gcc-based systems.
1403 Thanks to Evan Jones for hard work and patience.
1404
Georg Brandl533ff6f2006-03-08 18:09:27 +00001405- Patch #1434038: property() now uses the getter's docstring if there is
1406 no "doc" argument given. This makes it possible to legitimately use
1407 property() as a decorator to produce a read-only property.
1408
Guido van Rossum9aa37ab2006-03-07 18:54:08 +00001409- PEP 357, patch 1436368: add an __index__ method to int/long and a matching
1410 nb_index slot to the PyNumberMethods struct. The slot is consulted instead
1411 of requiring an int or long in slicing and a few other contexts, enabling
1412 other objects (e.g. Numeric Python's integers) to be used as slice indices.
1413
Neal Norwitz995acdf2006-03-07 05:01:00 +00001414- Fixed various bugs reported by Coverity's Prevent tool.
1415
Brett Cannonbf364092006-03-01 04:25:17 +00001416- PEP 352, patch #1104669: Make exceptions new-style objects. Introduced the
1417 new exception base class, BaseException, which has a new message attribute.
1418 KeyboardInterrupt and SystemExit to directly inherit from BaseException now.
1419 Raising a string exception now raises a DeprecationWarning.
1420
Thomas Woutersfb609f42006-02-28 16:37:25 +00001421- Patch #1438387, PEP 328: relative and absolute imports. Imports can now be
1422 explicitly relative, using 'from .module import name' to mean 'from the same
1423 package as this module is in. Imports without dots still default to the
1424 old relative-then-absolute, unless 'from __future__ import
1425 absolute_import' is used.
1426
Brett Cannona7446e32006-02-27 23:39:10 +00001427- Properly check if 'warnings' raises an exception (usually when a filter set
1428 to "error" is triggered) when raising a warning for raising string
1429 exceptions.
1430
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001431- CO_GENERATOR_ALLOWED is no longer defined. This behavior is the default.
Neal Norwitz0023a2f2006-02-27 23:24:48 +00001432 The name was removed from Include/code.h.
1433
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001434- PEP 308: conditional expressions were added: (x if cond else y).
Neal Norwitzeb651252006-02-27 16:47:12 +00001435
Guido van Rossum1968ad32006-02-25 22:38:04 +00001436- Patch 1433928:
1437 - The copy module now "copies" function objects (as atomic objects).
1438 - dict.__getitem__ now looks for a __missing__ hook before raising
1439 KeyError.
1440
Tim Peters84ef21c2006-02-28 20:39:06 +00001441- PEP 343: with statement implemented. Needs ``from __future__ import
1442 with_statement``. Use of 'with' as a variable will generate a warning.
1443 Use of 'as' as a variable will also generate a warning (unless it's
Neal Norwitz055ec242006-02-28 20:06:49 +00001444 part of an import statement).
Guido van Rossum1a5e21e2006-02-28 21:57:43 +00001445 The following objects have __context__ methods:
1446 - The built-in file type.
1447 - The thread.LockType type.
1448 - The following types defined by the threading module:
1449 Lock, RLock, Condition, Semaphore, BoundedSemaphore.
1450 - The decimal.Context class.
Guido van Rossumc2e20742006-02-27 22:32:47 +00001451
Marc-André Lemburgfe4b34c2006-02-19 15:22:22 +00001452- Fix the encodings package codec search function to only search
1453 inside its own package. Fixes problem reported in patch #1433198.
1454
1455 Note: Codec packages should implement and register their own
1456 codec search function. PEP 100 has the details.
1457
Tim Peters9ea89d22006-06-04 03:26:02 +00001458- PEP 353: Using ``Py_ssize_t`` as the index type.
1459
1460- ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` builds now add ``4*sizeof(size_t)`` bytes of debugging
1461 info to each allocated block, since the ``Py_ssize_t`` changes (PEP 353)
1462 now allow Python to make use of memory blocks exceeding 2**32 bytes for
1463 some purposes on 64-bit boxes. A ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` build was limited
1464 to 4-byte allocations before.
Martin v. Löwis18e16552006-02-15 17:27:45 +00001465
Neal Norwitzfc76d632006-01-10 06:03:13 +00001466- Patch #1400181, fix unicode string formatting to not use the locale.
1467 This is how string objects work. u'%f' could use , instead of .
1468 for the decimal point. Now both strings and unicode always use periods.
1469
Neal Norwitz671b9e32006-01-09 07:07:12 +00001470- Bug #1244610, #1392915, fix build problem on OpenBSD 3.7 and 3.8.
1471 configure would break checking curses.h.
1472
Georg Brandlcd4d1e82005-12-27 17:37:07 +00001473- Bug #959576: The pwd module is now builtin. This allows Python to be
1474 built on UNIX platforms without $HOME set.
1475
Neal Norwitzc10978f2005-12-19 06:07:16 +00001476- Bug #1072182, fix some potential problems if characters are signed.

1479
Neal Norwitzdb83eb32005-12-18 05:29:30 +00001480- Bug #1378022, UTF-8 files with a leading BOM crashed the interpreter.
1481
Neal Norwitze7214a12005-12-18 05:03:17 +00001482- Support for converting hex strings to floats no longer works.
1483 This was not portable. float('0x3') now raises a ValueError.
1484
Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00001485- Patch #1382163: Expose Subversion revision number to Python. New C API

Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00001487 is now displayed in interactive prompt banner.
1488
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00001489- Implementation of PEP 341 - Unification of try/except and try/finally.
1490 "except" clauses can now be written together with a "finally" clause in
Neal Norwitz11ca77e2005-12-17 22:24:12 +00001491 one try statement instead of two nested ones. Patch #1355913.
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00001492
Hye-Shik Chang835b2432005-12-17 04:38:31 +00001493- Bug #1379994: Builtin unicode_escape and raw_unicode_escape codec
1494 now encodes backslash correctly.
1495

1497
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001498- Bug #1281408: Py_BuildValue now works correctly even with unsigned longs
Georg Brandlf06e30a2005-11-24 15:37:42 +00001499 and long longs.
1500
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00001501- SF Bug #1350188, "setdlopenflags" leads to crash upon "import"
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001502 It was possible for dlerror() to return a NULL pointer, so
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001503 it will now use a default error message in this case.
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00001504
Marc-André Lemburga5bafc42005-10-23 13:43:40 +00001505- Replaced most Unicode charmap codecs with new ones using the
1506 new Unicode translate string feature in the builtin charmap
1507 codec; the codecs were created from the mapping tables available
1508 at ftp.unicode.org and contain a few updates (e.g. the Mac OS
1509 encodings now include a mapping for the Apple logo)

1530
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001531- All iterators now have a Boolean value of True. Formerly, some iterators
Raymond Hettinger6b27cda2005-09-24 21:23:05 +00001532 supported a __len__() method which evaluated to False when the iterator
1533 was empty.
1534
Guido van Rossum630db602005-09-20 18:49:54 +00001535- On 64-bit platforms, when __len__() returns a value that cannot be
1536 represented as a C int, raise OverflowError.
1537
Skip Montanarof8948ca2005-09-19 03:54:46 +00001538- test__locale is skipped on OS X < 10.4 (only partial locale support is

1555
Barry Warsawe2eca0b2005-08-15 18:14:19 +00001556- SF bug #900092: When tracing (e.g. for hotshot), restore 'return' events for
1557 exceptions that cause a function to exit.
1558
Raymond Hettinger9f1a6792005-07-31 01:16:36 +00001559- The implementation of set() and frozenset() was revised to use its
1560 own internal data structure. Memory consumption is reduced by 1/3
1561 and there are modest speed-ups as well. The API is unchanged.
1562
Tim Petersde7990b2005-07-17 23:45:23 +00001563- SF bug #1238681: freed pointer is used in longobject.c:long_pow().
1564
Michael W. Hudson0edc7a02005-07-12 10:21:19 +00001565- SF bug #1229429: PyObject_CallMethod failed to decrement some
1566 reference counts in some error exit cases.
1567
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001568- SF bug #1185883: Python's small-object memory allocator took over
1569 a block managed by the platform C library whenever a realloc specified
1570 a small new size. However, there's no portable way to know then how
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001571 much of the address space following the pointer is valid, so there's no
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001572 portable way to copy data from the C-managed block into Python's
1573 small-object space without risking a memory fault. Python's small-object
1574 realloc now leaves such blocks under the control of the platform C
1575 realloc.
1576
Michael W. Hudsonb8963812005-07-05 15:21:58 +00001577- SF bug #1232517: An overflow error was not detected properly when
1578 attempting to convert a large float to an int in os.utime().
1579
Raymond Hettinger3296e692005-06-29 23:29:56 +00001580- SF bug #1224347: hex longs now print with lowercase letters just
1581 like their int counterparts.
1582
Michael W. Hudson188d4362005-06-20 16:52:57 +00001583- SF bug #1163563: the original fix for bug #1010677 ("thread Module
1584 Breaks PyGILState_Ensure()") broke badly in the case of multiple
1585 interpreter states; back out that fix and do a better job (see
1586 http://mail.python.org/pipermail/python-dev/2005-June/054258.html
1587 for a longer write-up of the problem).
1588
Michael W. Hudsondf888462005-06-03 14:41:55 +00001589- SF patch #1180995: marshal now uses a binary format by default when
1590 serializing floats.
1591
Michael W. Hudsonda85a902005-06-01 11:34:22 +00001592- SF patch #1181301: on platforms that appear to use IEEE 754 floats,
1593 the routines that promise to produce IEEE 754 binary representations
1594 of floats now simply copy bytes around.
1595
Skip Montanarobbf12ba2005-05-20 03:07:06 +00001596- bug #967182: disallow opening files with 'wU' or 'aU' as specified by PEP
1597 278.
1598
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001599- patch #1109424: int, long, float, complex, and unicode now check for the
1600 proper magic slot for type conversions when subclassed. Previously the
1601 magic slot was ignored during conversion. Semantics now match the way
1602 subclasses of str always behaved. int/long/float, conversion of an instance
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00001603 to the base class has been moved to the proper nb_* magic slot and out of
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001604 PyNumber_*().
Neal Norwitzcfba5f82006-04-25 05:05:03 +00001605 Thanks Walter Drwald.
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001606
Barry Warsawc8d907c2005-04-19 23:43:40 +00001607- Descriptors defined in C with a PyGetSetDef structure, where the setter is
1608 NULL, now raise an AttributeError when attempting to set or delete the
1609 attribute. Previously a TypeError was raised, but this was inconsistent
1610 with the equivalent pure-Python implementation.
1611
Michael W. Hudson774479c2005-04-18 08:46:17 +00001612- It is now safe to call PyGILState_Release() before
1613 PyEval_InitThreads() (note that if there is reason to believe there
1614 are multiple threads around you still must call PyEval_InitThreads()
1615 before using the Python API; this fix is for extension modules that
1616 have no way of knowing if Python is multi-threaded yet).
1617
Michael W. Hudsone3afc592005-04-07 10:11:19 +00001618- Typing Ctrl-C whilst raw_input() was waiting in a build with threads
1619 disabled caused a crash.
1620
Michael W. Hudsonb330adf2005-03-31 09:35:44 +00001621- Bug #1165306: instancemethod_new allowed the creation of a method
1622 with im_class == im_self == NULL, which caused a crash when called.
1623
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001624- Move exception finalisation later in the shutdown process - this
Anthony Baxter12b6f6c2005-03-29 13:36:16 +00001625 fixes the crash seen in bug #1165761

1628
Brett Cannon409d8f22005-03-05 06:47:57 +00001629- Defining a class with empty parentheses is now allowed
Brett Cannonf4189912005-04-09 02:30:16 +00001630 (e.g., ``class C(): pass`` is no longer a syntax error).
1631 Patch #1176012 added support to the 'parser' module and 'compiler' package
1632 (thanks to logistix for that added support).

1646
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001647- Bug #1074011: closing sys.std{out,err} now causes a flush() and
Martin v. Löwis8e3ca8a2005-01-23 09:41:49 +00001648 an ferror() call.
1649
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00001650- min() and max() now support key= arguments with the same meaning as in

Jeremy Hyltonab630502005-02-04 18:44:06 +00001661- The parser did not complain about future statements in illegal
1662 positions. It once again reports a syntax error if a future
1663 statement occurs after anything other than a doc string.
1664
Neil Schemenauercf52c072005-08-12 17:34:58 +00001665- Change the %s format specifier for str objects so that it returns a
1666 unicode instance if the argument is not an instance of basestring and
1667 calling __str__ on the argument returns a unicode instance.
1668
Tim Petersf4e69282006-02-27 17:15:31 +00001669- Patch #1413181: changed ``PyThreadState_Delete()`` to forget about the
1670 current thread state when the auto-GIL-state machinery knows about
1671 it (since the thread state is being deleted, continuing to remember it
1672 can't help, but can hurt if another thread happens to get created with
1673 the same thread id).

Georg Brandl828fdef2006-04-01 08:59:03 +00001884 a DB-API interface in the standard library. You'll need sqlite 3.0.8 or
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001885 later to build this - if you have an earlier version, the C extension
Anthony Baxterc51ee692006-04-01 00:57:31 +00001886 module will not be built.

1913 package that was included in Python 2.3, except that PEP 8 module names are
1914 now used (e.g. mail.message instead of email.Message). The MIME classes
1915 have been moved to a subpackage (e.g. email.mime.text instead of
1916 email.MIMEText). The old names are still supported for now. Several
1917 deprecated Message methods have been removed and lots of bugs have been
1918 fixed. More details can be found in the email package documentation.

2011 is that SHA-256 is a good choice for the time being, but
2012 that research should continue, and other alternatives may

2192
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002193- Enhancements to the csv module:
2194
2195 + Dialects are now validated by the underlying C code, better
Georg Brandl7eb4b7d2005-07-22 21:49:32 +00002196 reflecting its capabilities, and improving its compliance with
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002197 PEP 305.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002198 + Dialect parameter parsing has been re-implemented to improve error
2199 reporting.
2200 + quotechar=None and quoting=QUOTE_NONE now work the way PEP 305
2201 dictates.
2202 + the parser now removes the escapechar prefix from escaped characters.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002203 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the writer now tests for numeric
Andrew M. Kuchling6db67822006-04-18 14:04:57 +00002204 types, rather than any object that can be represented as a numeric.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002205 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the reader now casts unquoted fields
2206 to floats.
Andrew McNamaraf69d94f2005-01-13 11:30:54 +00002207 + reader now allows \r characters to be quoted (previously it only allowed
2208 \n to be quoted).
Andrew McNamarac89f2842005-01-12 07:44:42 +00002209 + writer doublequote handling improved.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002210 + Dialect classes passed to the module are no longer instantiated by
2211 the module before being parsed (the former validation scheme required
2212 this, but the mechanism was unreliable).
2213 + The dialect registry now contains instances of the internal
2214 C-coded dialect type, rather than references to python objects.
2215 + the internal c-coded dialect type is now immutable.
2216 + register_dialect now accepts the same keyword dialect specifications
2217 as the reader and writer, allowing the user to register dialects
2218 without first creating a dialect class.
2219 + a configurable limit to the size of parsed fields has been added -
2220 previously, an unmatched quote character could result in the entire
2221 file being read into the field buffer before an error was reported.
Andrew McNamara31d88962005-01-12 03:45:10 +00002222 + A new module method csv.field_size_limit() has been added that sets
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002223 the parser field size limit (returning the former limit). The initial
2224 limit is 128kB.
Andrew McNamara7f2053e2005-01-12 11:17:16 +00002225 + A line_num attribute has been added to the reader object, which tracks
2226 the number of lines read from the source iterator. This is not
2227 the same as the number of records returned, as records can span
2228 multiple lines.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002229 + reader and writer objects were not being registered with the cyclic-GC.
2230 This has been fixed.
2231
Brett Cannone6539c42005-01-08 02:43:53 +00002232- _DummyThread objects in the threading module now delete self.__block that is
2233 inherited from _Thread since it uses up a lock allocated by 'thread'. The
2234 lock primitives tend to be limited in number and thus should not be wasted on
2235 a _DummyThread object. Fixes bug #1089632.
2236
Raymond Hettinger97db05d2005-01-07 08:15:41 +00002237- The imghdr module now detects Exif files.
2238

2240 (Bug #951915).
2241
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00002242- locale.py now uses an updated locale alias table (built using
2243 Tools/i18n/makelocalealias.py, a tool to parse the X11 locale
2244 alias file); the encoding lookup was enhanced to use Python's
Andrew M. Kuchling88b85822005-08-23 00:57:07 +00002245 encoding alias table.
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00002246
Raymond Hettinger3557f422004-12-07 12:02:02 +00002247- moved deprecated modules to Lib/lib-old: whrandom, tzparse, statcache.
2248
Raymond Hettingera6b45cc2004-12-07 07:05:57 +00002249- the pickle module no longer accepts the deprecated None option in the
2250 args tuple returned by __reduce__().
2251
Brett Cannon84667c02004-12-07 03:25:18 +00002252- optparse now optionally imports gettext. This allows its use in setup.py.

2259
Raymond Hettingerf3fa9462004-12-05 01:58:09 +00002260- the filecmp module no longer uses the deprecated use_statcache argument.
2261
Raymond Hettinger664347b2004-12-04 21:21:53 +00002262- unittest.TestCase.run() and unittest.TestSuite.run() can now be successfully
2263 extended or overridden by subclasses. Formerly, the subclassed method would
2264 be ignored by the rest of the module. (Bug #1078905).
2265
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002266- heapq.nsmallest() and heapq.nlargest() now support key= arguments with
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00002267 the same meaning as in list.sort().
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002268
Walter Dörwald36733692004-12-22 12:50:50 +00002269- Bug #1076985: ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` now calls ``read()`` only
2270 once when a size argument is given. This prevents a buffer overflow in the
2271 tokenizer with very long source lines.
2272
Barry Warsaw538561e2006-01-01 21:48:54 +00002273- Bug #1083110: ``zlib.decompress.flush()`` would segfault if called
2274 immediately after creating the object, without any intervening
2275 ``.decompress()`` calls.
Andrew M. Kuchling3b585b32004-12-28 20:10:48 +00002276
Skip Montanaro05885812005-01-16 20:48:27 +00002277- The reconvert.quote function can now emit triple-quoted strings. The
2278 reconvert module now has some simple documentation.
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002279
Walter Dörwaldaf3b39a2005-02-18 13:22:43 +00002280- ``UserString.MutableString`` now supports negative indices in
2281 ``__setitem__`` and ``__delitem__``
2282
Greg Ward40407942005-03-05 02:53:17 +00002283- Bug #1149508: ``textwrap`` now handles hyphenated numbers (eg. "2004-03-05")
2284 correctly.
2285
Walter Dörwaldbc8e6422005-04-21 21:32:03 +00002286- Partial fixes for SF bugs #1163244 and #1175396: If a chunk read by
2287 ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` has a trailing "\r", read one more
2288 character even if the user has passed a size parameter to get a proper
2289 line ending. Remove the special handling of a "\r\n" that has been split
2290 between two lines.
2291
Walter Dörwalda47d1c02005-08-30 10:23:14 +00002292- Bug #1251300: On UCS-4 builds the "unicode-internal" codec will now complain
2293 about illegal code points. The codec now supports PEP 293 style error
2294 handlers.
2295
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00002296- Bug #1235646: ``codecs.StreamRecoder.next()`` now reencodes the data it reads
Walter Dörwaldc5238b82005-09-01 11:56:53 +00002297 from the input stream, so that the output is a byte string in the correct
2298 encoding instead of a unicode string.

Gustavo Niemeyer6fa0c5a2005-09-14 08:54:39 +00002300- Bug #1202493: Fixing SRE parser to handle '{}' as perl does, rather than
2301 considering it exactly like a '*'.
2302
Walter Dörwald007f8df2005-10-09 19:42:27 +00002303- Bug #1245379: Add "unicode-1-1-utf-7" as an alias for "utf-7" to
2304 ``encodings.aliases``.
Gustavo Niemeyer6fa0c5a2005-09-14 08:54:39 +00002305
Walter Dörwald09f0dd52005-11-21 19:10:07 +00002306- ` uu.encode()`` and ``uu.decode()`` now support unicode filenames.
2307
Gustavo Niemeyer548148812006-01-31 18:34:13 +00002308- Patch #1413711: Certain patterns of differences were making difflib
2309 touch the recursion limit.
2310
Walter Dörwald58917a62006-03-31 15:26:22 +00002311- Bug #947906: An object oriented interface has been added to the calendar
2312 module. It's possible to generate HTML calendar now and the module can be
Walter Dörwald48d5e502006-04-01 07:57:00 +00002313 called as a script (e.g. via ``python -mcalendar``). Localized month and
2314 weekday names can be ouput (even if an exotic encoding is used) using
2315 special classes that use unicode.

Brett Cannon08cd5982005-04-24 22:26:38 +00002342- EXTRA_CFLAGS has been introduced as an environment variable to hold compiler
2343 flags that change binary compatibility. Changes were also made to
2344 distutils.sysconfig to also use the environment variable when used during
Martin v. Löwisd7c795e2005-04-25 07:14:03 +00002345 compilation of the interpreter and of C extensions through distutils.

Bob Ippolitoed233462005-03-29 13:47:59 +00002347- SF patch 1171735: Darwin 8's headers are anal about POSIX compliance,
2348 and linking has changed (prebinding is now deprecated, and libcc_dynamic
2349 no longer exists). This configure patch makes things right.

Martin v. Löwise2713be2005-03-08 15:03:08 +00002351- Bug #1158607: Build with --disable-unicode again.
2352
Brett Cannon46d96232005-02-16 00:07:19 +00002353- spwdmodule.c is built only if either HAVE_GETSPNAM or HAVE_HAVE_GETSPENT is
2354 defined. Discovered as a result of not being able to build on OS X.
2355
Brett Cannon516592f2004-12-07 00:42:59 +00002356- setup.py now uses the directories specified in LDFLAGS using the -L option
2357 and in CPPFLAGS using the -I option for adding library and include
2358 directories, respectively, for compiling extension modules against. This has
2359 led to the core being compiled using the values in CPPFLAGS. It also removes
2360 the need for the special-casing of both DarwinPorts and Fink for darwin since
2361 the proper directories can be specified in LDFLAGS (``-L/sw/lib`` for Fink,
2362 ``-L/opt/local/lib`` for DarwinPorts) and CPPFLAGS (``-I/sw/include`` for
2363 Fink, ``-I/opt/local/include`` for DarwinPorts).
2364
Brett Cannon43802422005-02-10 20:48:03 +00002365- Test in configure.in that checks for tzset no longer dependent on tm->tm_zone
2366 to exist in the struct (not required by either ISO C nor the UNIX 2 spec).
2367 Tests for sanity in tzname when HAVE_TZNAME defined were also defined.
2368 Closes bug #1096244. Thanks Gregory Bond.

2371-----
2372
Tim Petersc9d78aa2006-03-26 23:27:58 +00002373- ``PyMem_{Del, DEL}`` and ``PyMem_{Free, FREE}`` no longer map to
2374 ``PyObject_{Free, FREE}``. They map to the system ``free()`` now. If memory
2375 is obtained via the ``PyObject_`` family, it must be released via the
2376 ``PyObject_`` family, and likewise for the ``PyMem_`` family. This has
2377 always been officially true, but when Python's small-object allocator was
2378 introduced, an attempt was made to cater to a few extension modules
2379 discovered at the time that obtained memory via ``PyObject_New`` but
2380 released it via ``PyMem_DEL``. It's years later, and if such code still
2381 exists it will fail now (probably with segfaults, but calling wrong
2382 low-level memory management functions can yield many symptoms).
2383
Raymond Hettingerbeb31012005-08-16 03:47:52 +00002384- Added a C API for set and frozenset objects.

Walter Dörwaldd1c1e102005-10-06 20:29:57 +00002388- Patch #1313939: PyUnicode_DecodeCharmap() accepts a unicode string as the
2389 mapping argument now. This string is used as a mapping table. Byte values
2390 greater than the length of the string and 0xFFFE are treated as undefined
2391 mappings.
