8================================
9
10Core and Builtins
11-----------------
12
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +000013- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
14 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
15
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +000016- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
17 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
18
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +000019- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
20 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
21 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
22
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +000023- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
24 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
25 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
26 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
27 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
28 level.
29
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +000030- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
31 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
32 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
33 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
34 all imports from that module to fail.
35
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +000036- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
37 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
38 new-style classes.
39
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +000040- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
41 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
42 another file in sys.stdout.
43
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +000044- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
45 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
46 another thread's dictionary.
47
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +000048- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
49 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
50 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
51 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
52 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
53 10, -1).
54
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +000055- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments, f(a=2, a=23),
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +000056 would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression from 2.4 caused by the
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +000057 switch to the new compiler.
58
Gregory P. Smith2fe77062008-07-06 03:35:58 +000059- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with other
60 freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into ClearFreeList apis and
61 calls them via gc.collect().
62
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +000063Library
64-------
65
Georg Brandl86cbf812008-07-16 21:31:41 +000066- Issue #1608818: Fix misbehavior in os.listdir() if readdir() fails.
67
Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +000068- Issue #3125: Remove copy_reg in multiprocessing and replace it with
69 ForkingPickler.register() to resolve conflict with ctypes.
70
71- Issue #3090: Fixed ARCHFLAGS parsing on OS/X
72
Thomas Heller880f5292008-07-15 19:39:38 +000073- Issue #3313: Fixed a crash when a failed dlopen() call does not set
74 a valid dlerror() message.
75
Thomas Heller2bad6572008-07-15 17:19:50 +000076- Issue #3258: Fixed a crash when a ctypes POINTER type to an
77 incomplete structure was created.
78
Brett Cannon3d0b9f02008-07-13 01:15:07 +000079- Issue #3339: dummy_thread.acquire() should not return None.
80
Raymond Hettingerb01713e2008-07-10 14:34:57 +000081- Issue #3285: Fractions from_float() and from_decimal() accept Integral arguments.
82
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +000083- Issue #3301: Bisect module behaved badly when lo was negative.
Raymond Hettinger3cd1e422008-07-10 14:03:19 +000084
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +000085- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
86 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +000087 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +000088 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
89 merged into trunk.
90
Georg Brandle78fbcc2008-07-05 10:13:36 +000091- Issue #2663: add filtering capability to shutil.copytree().

94
95- Issue #1526: Allow more than 64k files to be added to Zip64 file.
96
97- Issue #1746: Correct handling of zipfile archive comments (previously
98 archives with comments over 4k were flagged as invalid). Allow writing
99 Zip files with archives by setting the 'comment' attribute of a ZipFile.
100
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000101- Issue #449227: The rlcompleter module now adds "(" to callable objects
102 when completed.

Nick Coghlanc060b0e2008-07-02 13:09:19 +0000104- Issue #3190: Pydoc now hides the automatic module attribute __package__ (the
105 handling is now the same as that of other special attributes like __name__).
106
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000107- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for
108 removal in Python 3.0 in favor of urllib2.urlopen().
109
Gregory P. Smithf4140642008-07-06 07:16:40 +0000110- Issue #2113: Fix error in subprocess.Popen if the select system call is

118 redundant ":443" port number designation when the connection is using the
119 default https port (443).

122-----
123
124- test.test_support.catch_warning now keeps track of all warnings it sees
125 and is now better documented. Explicit unit tests for this context manager
126 have been added to test_warnings.
127
128
Martin v. Löwisd84fd952008-06-30 06:57:39 +0000129Build

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000553- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
554 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
555 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
556 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
557 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
558 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
559 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support
560 for the ``line`` argument will raise a DeprecationWarning.

Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000622
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000623- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
624 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
625 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
626 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
627 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
628 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
629 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
630 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
631 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
632 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
633 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
634 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
635 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
636 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
637 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
638 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
639 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
640 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
641 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
642 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
643
644 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
645 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
646 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
647 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
648 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
649 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
650 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
651 access to the underlying socket used.
652
653 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
654 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
655 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000656
657 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000658 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000659 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
660 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
661
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000662 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
663 suite to run in parallel without issue.

941
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +0000942- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
943 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
944 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
945 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
946 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
947 module is:
948 from future_builtins import hex, oct
949
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +0000950- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
951 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
952 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
953 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
954 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
955 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
956
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +0000957- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
958 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
959 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
960 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
961 PyObject_Format().
962
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000963- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
964 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
965 state.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001123- Issue #1686386: Tuple's tp_repr did not take into account the
1124 possibility of having a self-referential tuple, which is possible
1125 from C code. Nor did object's tp_str consider that a type's tp_str
1126 could do something that could lead to an inifinite recursion.
1127 Py_ReprEnter() and Py_EnterRecursiveCall(), respectively, fixed the
1128 issues.

Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +00001201 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature

2623 lists in Object/ are named ``free_list``, the counter ``numfree``

Christian Heimes5b970ad2008-02-06 13:33:44 +00002626

2628 to ``PyTuple_SetItem``, it can be used to populate a brand new
2629 frozenset; but it does not steal a reference to the added item.

2643 of w# format code incorrectly truncated the length to an int, even
2644 when PY_SSIZE_T_CLEAN is set. The str.decode method used to return
2645 incorrect results with huge strings.
Georg Brandl6caad7d2008-01-26 14:19:22 +00002646

2666 (relevant to strings and sequences of more than 2**31 items).
2667
