407
Martin v. Löwis9fa5a282008-09-11 06:53:30 +0000408- Issue #3642: Suppress warning in obmalloc when size_t is larger than uint.
409
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc05e34492008-09-10 22:04:45 +0000410- Issue #3743: In a few places, PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T was incorrectly used with
411 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro
412 PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T is designed to select the correct format for the OS
413 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent
414 implementation and uses "%zd" on all platforms for size_t values.
415 This makes a difference on win64, where ``printf`` needs "%Id" to display
416 64bit values.
417
Benjamin Peterson97179b02008-09-09 20:55:01 +0000418- Issue #3634: _weakref.ref(Exception).__init__() gave invalid return value on
419 error.
420
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcd3ffb892008-09-09 07:24:30 +0000421- Issue #3777: long() applied to a float object now always return a long
422 object; previously an int would be returned for small values. the __long__
423 method is allowed to return either an int or a long, but the behaviour of
424 float objects should not change to respect backward compatibility.
425
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +0000426- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with
427 a unicode argument.
428

Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000432 PyArg_ParseTuple and friends, which occurred when the argument for "s*"
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +0000433 was correctly parsed but parsing of subsequent arguments failed.
434
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000435- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +0000436 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
437 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
438 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
439 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
440 type object.
441
Neal Norwitz18aa3882008-08-24 05:04:52 +0000442- Fix crashes on memory allocation failure found with failmalloc.
443
444- Fix memory leaks found with valgrind and update suppressions file.
445
446- Fix compiler warnings in opt mode which would lead to invalid memory reads.
447
448- Fix problem using wrong name in decimal module reported by pychecker.
449
Christian Heimes7d4c3172008-08-22 19:47:25 +0000450- Silenced another compiler warning about a used but not defined
451 function 'stringlib_contains_obj'.
452
Benjamin Peterson712ee922008-08-24 18:10:20 +0000453- Added warnings on the use of ``__getslice__``, ``__setslice__``, or
454 ``__delslice__``.
455
Gregory P. Smith2bb25cc2008-09-02 05:29:51 +0000456- Issue #3678: Correctly pass LDFLAGS and LDLAST to the linker on shared

581Core and Builtins
582-----------------
583
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000584- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
585 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
586 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
587 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
588 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
589 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
590 default.
591
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000592- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
593 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
594
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000595- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
596 value again.
597
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000598- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
599 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
600 and introducing s*.
601
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000602- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
603 object was stored in the freelist.
604
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000605- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
606 ValueError consistently across platforms.
607
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000608- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
609 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
610 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
611
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000612- Apply security patches from Apple.
613
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000614- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
615 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
616
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000617- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
618 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
619
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000620- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
621 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
622 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
623
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000624- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
625 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
626 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
627 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
628 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
629 failed have been fixed.

635
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000636- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
637 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000639- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
640 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
641 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.

644 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
645 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
646 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
647 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,

776-----------------
777
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000778- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
779 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
780 an integer using operator.index().
781
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000782- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
783 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
784
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000785- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
786 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
787
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000788- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
789 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
790 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
791
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000792- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
793 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
794 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
795 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
796 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
797 level.
798
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000799- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
800 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
801 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
802 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
803 all imports from that module to fail.
804
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000805- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
806 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
807 new-style classes.
808
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000809- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
810 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
811 another file in sys.stdout.
812
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000813- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
814 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
815 another thread's dictionary.
816
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000817- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
818 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
819 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
820 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
821 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
822 10, -1).
823
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000824- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
825 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
826 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000827
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000828- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000864- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
865 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000866 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000867 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
868 merged into trunk.

885
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000886- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for

1406-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001407
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001408- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1409 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1410 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1411 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1412 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1413 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1414 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1415 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1416 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1417 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1418 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1419 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1420 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1421 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1422 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1423 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1424 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1425 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1426 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1427 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1428
1429 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1430 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1431 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1432 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1433 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1434 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1435 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1436 access to the underlying socket used.
1437
1438 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1439 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1440 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001441
1442 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001443 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,

1446
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001447 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test

1726
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001727- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1728 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1729 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1730 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1731 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1732 module is:
1733 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1734
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001735- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1736 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1737 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1738 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1739 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1740 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1741
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001742- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1743 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1744 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1745 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1746 PyObject_Format().
1747
