10*Release date: XX-Aug-2008*
11
12Core and Builtins
13-----------------
14
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +000015- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
16 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
17 and introducing s*.
18
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +000019- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
20 object was stored in the freelist.
21
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +000022- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
23 ValueError consistently across platforms.
24
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +000025- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
26 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
27 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
28
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +000029- Apply security patches from Apple.
30
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +000031- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
32 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
33
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +000034- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
35 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
36
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +000037- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
38 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
39 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
40
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +000041- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
42 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
43 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
44 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
45 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
46 failed have been fixed.
47

50
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +000051- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
52 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
53
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +000054- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
55

59
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +000060- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
61 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
62
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +000063- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
64 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
65
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +000066- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
67 in a redirect.
68
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +000069- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in
Brett Cannon721b1452008-08-16 22:00:27 +000070 BaseHTTPServer, cgi (and rfc822), httplib.
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +000071
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +000072- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash
73 after a 302 response in the case of not going through a proxy.
74
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +000075- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
76 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
77 regular expression.
78
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +000079- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now
80 thread-safe.
81
Brett Cannonbf3157b2008-08-14 05:00:03 +000082- Silence the DeprecationWarning of rfc822 when it is imported by mimetools
83 since mimetools itself is deprecated. Because modules are cached, all
84 subsequent imports of rfc822 will not raise a visible DeprecationWarning.
85
Antoine Pitrou9fcd4b32008-08-11 17:21:36 +000086- Issue #3134: shutil referenced undefined WindowsError symbol.

90
Brett Cannon83e81842008-08-09 23:30:55 +000091- Copied the implementation of reduce() to _functools.reduce() to have a
92 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
93
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +000094- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise
95 a MemoryError rather than silently stop the iteration.
96
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +000097- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"
98 to _sre.compile() will now be rejected. This should not affect anybody
99 since the re.compile() function never generates invalid re-bytecode.
100
Skip Montanaroa032bf42008-08-08 22:52:51 +0000101- Issue #3436: Make csv.DictReader's fieldnames attribute a property so that
102 upon first access it can be automatically initialized from the csv file if
103 it wasn't initialized during instantiation.
104
Brett Cannon3aa2a492008-08-06 22:28:09 +0000105- Issue #2338: Create imp.reload() to help with transitioning to Python 3.0 as

Brett Cannonc1b76e42008-08-09 23:06:16 +0000109 while running under the ``-3`` flag: aifc, asynchat, asyncore, bdb, bsddb,
Brett Cannon047e4a92008-08-17 04:16:04 +0000110 ConfigParser, cookielib, csv, difflib, distutils, DocXMLRPCServer, email,
111 filecmp, fileinput, inspect, logging, modulefinder, pdb, pickle, profile,
112 pstats, pydoc, re, rlcompleter, SimpleXMLRPCServer, shelve, socket,
113 subprocess, sqlite3, tarfile, Tkinter, test.test_support, textwrap,
114 threading, tokenize, traceback, urlparse, wsgiref, xml, xmlrpclib.
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +0000115
Lars Gustäbel727bd0b2008-08-02 11:26:39 +0000116- Issue #3039: Fix tarfile.TarFileCompat.writestr() which always
117 raised an AttributeError.
118
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +0000119- Issue #2523: Fix quadratic behaviour when read()ing a binary file without
Antoine Pitroude781a42008-08-09 12:43:23 +0000120 asking for a specific length. This problem only affected files opened
121 using the new "io" module, not the built-in open() function.
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +0000122
Mark Dickinsonfe84cce2008-07-27 06:39:07 +0000123- Issue #3449: Update decimal module to use most recent specification
124 (v. 1.68) and tests (v. 2.58) from IBM.
125
Skip Montanarof9ac43f2008-07-27 00:50:41 +0000126- Issue 3437: Bug fix in robotparser parsing of Allow: lines.
127

142 configuration files.
143
144- Deprecate the sunaudio module for removal in Python 3.0.
145
Antoine Pitrou5fdfa3e2008-07-25 19:42:26 +0000146- Issue #3394: zipfile.writestr sets external attributes when passed a
147 file name rather than a ZipInfo instance, so files are extracted with
148 mode 0600 rather than 000 under Unix.
149
Gregory P. Smitha36f8fe2008-08-04 00:13:29 +0000150- Issue #1857: subprocess.Popen.poll gained an additional _deadstate keyword
151 argument in python 2.5, this broke code that subclassed Popen to include its
152 own poll method. Fixed my moving _deadstate to an _internal_poll method.
153
Martin v. Löwis8dbf3642008-08-01 14:10:26 +0000154Build

160-------------
161
162- Issue #643841: The language reference now provides more detailed
163 coverage of the lookup process for special methods. The disclaimers
164 regarding lack of coverage of new-style classes have also been
165 removed, since the coverage is now fairly reasonable.

172
Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +0000173Core and Builtins
174-----------------
175
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000176- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
177 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
178 an integer using operator.index().
179
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000180- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
181 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
182
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000183- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
184 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
185
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000186- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
187 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
188 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
189
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000190- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
191 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
192 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
193 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
194 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
195 level.
196
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000197- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
198 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
199 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
200 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
201 all imports from that module to fail.
202
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000203- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
204 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
205 new-style classes.
206
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000207- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
208 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
209 another file in sys.stdout.
210
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000211- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
212 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
213 another thread's dictionary.
214
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000215- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
216 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
217 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
218 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
219 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
220 10, -1).
221
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000222- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
223 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
224 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000225
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000226- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
227 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into
228 ClearFreeList apis and calls them via gc.collect().
Gregory P. Smith2fe77062008-07-06 03:35:58 +0000229
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000230Library
231-------
232
Thomas Heller57adf222008-08-14 19:10:48 +0000233- Issue #3554: ctypes.string_at and ctypes.wstring_at did call Python
234 api functions without holding the GIL, which could lead to a fatal
235 error when they failed.
236
Martin v. Löwisaabf4042008-08-02 07:20:25 +0000237- Issue #799428: Fix Tkinter.Misc._nametowidget to unwrap Tcl command objects.
238
Jesse Noller7fb96402008-07-17 21:01:05 +0000239- Issue #3395: fix reference in test_multiprocessing to old debugInfo method
240
Georg Brandla24869a2008-07-16 22:33:18 +0000241- Issue #3312: Fix two crashes in sqlite3.
242

244
Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +0000245- Issue #3125: Remove copy_reg in multiprocessing and replace it with
246 ForkingPickler.register() to resolve conflict with ctypes.
247
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000248- Issue #3090: Fixed ARCHFLAGS parsing on OS/X
Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +0000249
Thomas Heller880f5292008-07-15 19:39:38 +0000250- Issue #3313: Fixed a crash when a failed dlopen() call does not set
251 a valid dlerror() message.
252
Thomas Heller2bad6572008-07-15 17:19:50 +0000253- Issue #3258: Fixed a crash when a ctypes POINTER type to an
254 incomplete structure was created.
255

259
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000260- Issue #3301: Bisect module behaved badly when lo was negative.
Raymond Hettinger3cd1e422008-07-10 14:03:19 +0000261
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000262- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
263 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000264 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000265 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
266 merged into trunk.
267
Georg Brandle78fbcc2008-07-05 10:13:36 +0000268- Issue #2663: add filtering capability to shutil.copytree().

273
274- Issue #1746: Correct handling of zipfile archive comments (previously
275 archives with comments over 4k were flagged as invalid). Allow writing
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000276 Zip files with archives by setting the 'comment' attribute of a ZipFile.
Martin v. Löwis8c436412008-07-03 12:51:14 +0000277
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000278- Issue #449227: The rlcompleter module now adds "(" to callable objects
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000279 when completed.
Facundo Batista66c52772008-07-02 16:52:55 +0000280
Nick Coghlanc060b0e2008-07-02 13:09:19 +0000281- Issue #3190: Pydoc now hides the automatic module attribute __package__ (the
282 handling is now the same as that of other special attributes like __name__).
283
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000284- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for
285 removal in Python 3.0 in favor of urllib2.urlopen().

288 interrupted by a signal.
289
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000290- Issue #3309: Fix bz2.BZFile iterator to release its internal lock
Gregory P. Smith3b1e6b22008-07-07 04:31:58 +0000291 properly when raising an exception due to the bz2file being closed.
292 Prevents a deadlock.
293
Gregory P. Smithc4691ec2008-07-07 05:09:12 +0000294- Issue #3094: httplib.HTTPSConnection Host: headers no longer include the
295 redundant ":443" port number designation when the connection is using the
296 default https port (443).
297
Gregory P. Smithdb3409c2008-07-17 03:13:05 +0000298- Issue #874900: after an os.fork() call the threading module state is cleaned
299 up in the child process to prevent deadlock and report proper thread counts
300 if the new process uses the threading module.
301
Nick Coghlan38469e22008-07-13 12:23:47 +0000302Tests
303-----
304
305- test.test_support.catch_warning now keeps track of all warnings it sees
306 and is now better documented. Explicit unit tests for this context manager

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000733- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
734 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
735 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
736 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``

738 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
739 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support

801-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000802
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000803- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
804 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
805 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
806 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
807 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
808 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
809 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
810 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
811 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
812 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
813 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
814 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
815 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
816 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
817 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
818 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
819 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
820 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
821 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
822 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
823
824 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
825 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
826 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
827 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
828 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
829 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
830 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
831 access to the underlying socket used.
832
833 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
834 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
835 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000836
837 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000838 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000839 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
840 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
841
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000842 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
843 suite to run in parallel without issue.

Christian Heimes5224d282008-02-23 15:01:05 +00001118
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001119- Issue #1881: An internal parser limit has been increased. Also see
Facundo Batistafc2d0102008-02-23 12:01:13 +00001120 issue 215555 for a discussion.
1121
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001122- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1123 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1124 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1125 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1126 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1127 module is:
1128 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1129
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001130- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1131 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1132 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1133 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1134 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1135 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1136
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001137- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1138 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1139 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1140 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1141 PyObject_Format().
1142
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001143- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
