Brett Cannonb61d8012008-05-11 23:39:04 +0000303- ``Lib/lib-old`` is now added to sys.path.
304
Ronald Oussoren5640ce22008-06-05 12:58:24 +0000305- On MacOS X it is now possible to install the framework in 64-bit
306 mode or even as a 4-way universal binary (that is, PPC, i386,
307 PPC64 and x86_64 support in one binary)
308
309 This is controlled by the configure argument ``--with-universal-archs``:
310
311 - ``--with-universal-archs=all``: install 4-way universal
312
313 - ``--with-universal-archs=32-bit``: install 2-way universal, 32-bit (the default)
314
315 - ``--with-universal-archs=64-bit``: install 2-way universal, 64-bit
316
317 This option should be used in combination with ``--enable-universalsdk=``.
318
319 NOTE: 64-bit and 4-way builds are only suppported on Mac OS X 10.5 (or later).

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000369- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
370 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
371 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
372 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
373 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
374 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
375 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support
376 for the ``line`` argument will raise a DeprecationWarning.

Mark Hammond495cf992008-04-07 01:53:39 +0000419 extension modules between 32 and 64 bit platforms. See the distutls
420 build documentation for more information.
421
Gregory P. Smithaa63d0d2008-04-06 23:11:17 +0000422- Issue #815646: Individual file objects may now be used from multiple
423 threads at once without fear of crashing the Python interpreter. If
424 file.close() is called while an object is in use by another thread

434 data files.

437-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000438
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000439- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
440 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
441 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
442 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
443 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
444 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
445 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
446 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
447 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
448 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
449 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
450 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
451 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
452 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
453 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
454 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
455 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
456 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
457 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
458 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
459
460 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
461 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
462 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
463 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
464 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
465 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
466 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
467 access to the underlying socket used.
468
469 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
470 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
471 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000472
473 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000474 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000475 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
476 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
477
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000478 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
479 suite to run in parallel without issue.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc9a0d3462008-03-23 09:55:29 +0000533- Issue #1477: With narrow Unicode builds, the unicode escape sequence
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000534 \Uxxxxxxxx did not accept values outside the Basic Multilingual
535 Plane. This affected raw unicode literals and the

Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +0000758- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
759 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be

762 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
763 module is:
764 from future_builtins import hex, oct
765
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +0000766- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
767 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
768 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
769 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
770 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
771 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
772
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +0000773- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new

Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +0000793
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000794- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a

1013 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when
1014 either allows excess arguments is when it is not overridden and the
1015 other one is. For backwards compatibility, when both are
1016 overridden, it is a deprecation warning (for now; maybe a Py3k
Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +00001017 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
1018 as supported by type.__new__().
Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +00001019
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001020- Patch #1675423: PyComplex_AsCComplex() now tries to convert an
1021 object to complex using its __complex__() method before falling back
1022 to the __float__() method. Therefore, the functions in the cmath
1023 module now can operate on objects that define a __complex__()
1024 method.

Georg Brandlaa2321b2007-03-07 00:40:28 +00001060- Patch #703779: unset __file__ in __main__ after running a file. This
