12Core and Builtins
13-----------------
14
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +000015- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
16 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
17 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
18
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +000019- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
20 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
21 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
22 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
23 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
24 failed have been fixed.

30 on a closed shelf.
31
Georg Brandlf9efabb2008-07-23 15:16:45 +000032- Deprecate the "ast" parser function aliases.
33
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +000034- Issue #3120: On 64-bit Windows the subprocess module was truncating handles.
35
36- Issue #3303: Fix a crash in locale.strcoll() when calling it with
37 invalid arguments.
38
39- Issue #3302: Fix several crashes when calling locale's gettext functions
40 with None arguments.
41
42- Issue #3389: Allow resolving dotted names for handlers in logging
43 configuration files.
44
45- Deprecate the sunaudio module for removal in Python 3.0.

52
Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +000053Core and Builtins
54-----------------
55
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +000056- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
57 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
58 an integer using operator.index().
59
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +000060- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
61 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
62
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +000063- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
64 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
65
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +000066- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
67 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
68 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
69
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +000070- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
71 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
72 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
73 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
74 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
75 level.
76
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +000077- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
78 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
79 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
80 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
81 all imports from that module to fail.
82
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +000083- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
84 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
85 new-style classes.
86
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +000087- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
88 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
89 another file in sys.stdout.
90
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +000091- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
92 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
93 another thread's dictionary.
94
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +000095- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
96 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
97 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
98 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
99 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
100 10, -1).
101
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000102- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
103 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
104 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000105
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000106- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
107 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into
108 ClearFreeList apis and calls them via gc.collect().
Gregory P. Smith2fe77062008-07-06 03:35:58 +0000109

118
Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +0000119- Issue #3125: Remove copy_reg in multiprocessing and replace it with

125 a valid dlerror() message.
126
Thomas Heller2bad6572008-07-15 17:19:50 +0000127- Issue #3258: Fixed a crash when a ctypes POINTER type to an
128 incomplete structure was created.
129

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000136- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
137 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000138 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000139 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
140 merged into trunk.
141
Georg Brandle78fbcc2008-07-05 10:13:36 +0000142- Issue #2663: add filtering capability to shutil.copytree().

156 handling is now the same as that of other special attributes like __name__).
157
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000158- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for

169 redundant ":443" port number designation when the connection is using the
170 default https port (443).

213 argument being anything other than a dict or None. Also fixed a bug in error
214 handling when 'message' and 'category' were both set to None, triggering a
215 bus error.
216

234 equals ``gen.gi_code.co_name``, like ``func.__name___`` that equals
235 ``func.func_code.co_name``. The repr() of a generator now also

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000607- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
608 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
609 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
610 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
611 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
612 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
613 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support
614 for the ``line`` argument will raise a DeprecationWarning.

Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000676
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000677- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
678 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
679 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
680 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
681 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
682 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
683 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
684 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
685 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
686 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
687 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
688 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
689 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
690 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
691 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
692 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
693 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
694 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
695 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
696 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
697
698 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
699 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
700 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
701 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
702 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
703 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
704 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
705 access to the underlying socket used.
706
707 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
708 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
709 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000710
711 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000712 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000713 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
714 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
715
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000716 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
717 suite to run in parallel without issue.

990
991- Patch #1759: Backport of PEP 3129 class decorators.
Christian Heimes5224d282008-02-23 15:01:05 +0000992
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000993- Issue #1881: An internal parser limit has been increased. Also see
Facundo Batistafc2d0102008-02-23 12:01:13 +0000994 issue 215555 for a discussion.
995
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +0000996- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
997 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
998 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
999 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1000 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1001 module is:
1002 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1003
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001004- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1005 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1006 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1007 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1008 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1009 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1010
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001011- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1012 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1013 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1014 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1015 PyObject_Format().
1016
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001017- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1018 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1019 state.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +00001020
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001021- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001022 prevent a possible crash: an Abstract Base Class would try to access
1023 a slot on a registered virtual subclass.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc60d6c7f2008-02-15 21:22:45 +00001024
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001025- Fixed repr() and str() of complex numbers with infinity or nan as
1026 real or imaginary part.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001028- Clear all free lists during a gc.collect() of the highest generation
1029 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
1030 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001031
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001032- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a
1033 subclass of collections.defaultdict, if its default_factory is set
1034 to a bound method.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcb01aa432008-02-08 00:56:02 +00001035
Christian Heimesf75dbef2008-02-08 00:11:31 +00001036- Fixed a minor memory leak in dictobject.c. The content of the free
1037 list was not freed on interpreter shutdown.
1038
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001039- Limit free list of method and builtin function objects to 256
1040 entries each.

1045
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001046- Issue #1983: Fixed return type of fork(), fork1() and forkpty()
1047 calls. Python expected the return type int but the fork familie
1048 returns pi_t.
Christian Heimes951cc0f2008-01-31 23:08:23 +00001049
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001050- Issue #1678380: Fix a bug that identifies 0j and -0j when they

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001062- Patch #1473257: generator objects gain a gi_code attribute. This is
1063 the same object as the func_code attribute of the function that
1064 produced the generator.
Georg Brandl0cdf9a32008-01-26 14:14:20 +00001065

1067 compiler, even in the presence of an "else" clause, which is
1068 supposed to be run when the condition is false. Now the compiler
