35 str instances. On a typical machine this saves 3 bytes of memory
36 (on average) per string allocation.
37
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcdc619012008-11-22 20:01:18 +000038- Issue #3996: On Windows, the PyOS_CheckStack function would cause the

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc32265652008-11-20 23:34:31 +000049 method on file objects with closefd=False. The file descriptor is still
50 kept open but the file object behaves like a closed file. The ``FileIO``
51 object also got a new readonly attribute ``closefd``.
52
Benjamin Peterson46cc6d12008-11-19 21:49:09 +000053- Issue #4348: Some bytearray methods returned that didn't cause any change to

69 __future__ import didn't work.
70
Benjamin Peterson399b1fe2008-10-25 02:53:28 +000071- Using ``nonlocal`` as a variable name will now raise a Py3k SyntaxWarning
Georg Brandl7fb00ad2008-10-25 07:00:52 +000072 because it is a reserved word in 3.x.
Benjamin Peterson399b1fe2008-10-25 02:53:28 +000073

79 is temporarily replaced with an equivalent frozenset. But the eventual
80 KeyError would always report the empty frozenset([]) as the missing key. Now
81 it correctly refers to the initial element.

Martin v. Löwis9fa5a282008-09-11 06:53:30 +0000319- Issue #3642: Suppress warning in obmalloc when size_t is larger than uint.
320
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc05e34492008-09-10 22:04:45 +0000321- Issue #3743: In a few places, PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T was incorrectly used with
322 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro
323 PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T is designed to select the correct format for the OS
324 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent
325 implementation and uses "%zd" on all platforms for size_t values.
326 This makes a difference on win64, where ``printf`` needs "%Id" to display
327 64bit values.
328
Benjamin Peterson97179b02008-09-09 20:55:01 +0000329- Issue #3634: _weakref.ref(Exception).__init__() gave invalid return value on
330 error.
331
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcd3ffb892008-09-09 07:24:30 +0000332- Issue #3777: long() applied to a float object now always return a long
333 object; previously an int would be returned for small values. the __long__
334 method is allowed to return either an int or a long, but the behaviour of
335 float objects should not change to respect backward compatibility.
336
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +0000337- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with
338 a unicode argument.
339

Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000343 PyArg_ParseTuple and friends, which occurred when the argument for "s*"
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +0000344 was correctly parsed but parsing of subsequent arguments failed.
345
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000346- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +0000347 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
348 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
349 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
350 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
351 type object.
352
Neal Norwitz18aa3882008-08-24 05:04:52 +0000353- Fix crashes on memory allocation failure found with failmalloc.

356
357- Fix compiler warnings in opt mode which would lead to invalid memory reads.
358
359- Fix problem using wrong name in decimal module reported by pychecker.
360
Christian Heimes7d4c3172008-08-22 19:47:25 +0000361- Silenced another compiler warning about a used but not defined
362 function 'stringlib_contains_obj'.
363
Benjamin Peterson712ee922008-08-24 18:10:20 +0000364- Added warnings on the use of ``__getslice__``, ``__setslice__``, or
365 ``__delslice__``.
366
Gregory P. Smith2bb25cc2008-09-02 05:29:51 +0000367- Issue #3678: Correctly pass LDFLAGS and LDLAST to the linker on shared
368 library targets in the Makefile.
369
Gregory P. Smith980b99b2008-09-07 05:15:18 +0000370- Issue #1204: The configure script now tests for additional libraries
371 that may be required when linking against readline. This fixes issues
372 with x86_64 builds on some platforms (a few Linux flavors and OpenBSD).
373
Benjamin Peterson14cb6bc2008-08-26 17:08:40 +0000374C-API

Nick Coghland2e09382008-09-11 12:11:06 +0000389- Issue #3781: Further warnings.catch_warnings() cleanup to prevent
390 silent misbehaviour when a single instance is nested in multiple
391 with statements, or when the methods are invoked in the wrong order.

489
Barry Warsaw07a4a382008-08-21 01:15:08 +0000490*Release date: 20-Aug-2008*
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000491
492Core and Builtins
493-----------------
494
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000495- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
496 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
497 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
498 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
499 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
500 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
501 default.
502
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000503- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
504 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
505
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000506- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
507 value again.
508
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000509- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
510 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
511 and introducing s*.
512
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000513- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
514 object was stored in the freelist.
515
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000516- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
517 ValueError consistently across platforms.
518
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000519- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
520 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
521 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
522
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000523- Apply security patches from Apple.
524
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000525- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
526 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
527
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000528- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
529 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
530
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000531- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
532 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
533 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
534
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000535- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
536 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
537 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
538 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
539 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
540 failed have been fixed.
541
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000542Library
543-------
544
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +0000545- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
546
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000547- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
548 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
549
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000550- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
551 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
552 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
553
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000554- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
555 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
556 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
557 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
558 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
559 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
560
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000561- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
562 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
563
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +0000564- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
565
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +0000566- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.
567
Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +0000568- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.
569
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +0000570- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
571 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
572
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +0000573- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
574 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
575
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +0000576- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
577 in a redirect.
578
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000579- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in
Brett Cannon721b1452008-08-16 22:00:27 +0000580 BaseHTTPServer, cgi (and rfc822), httplib.
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000581
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +0000582- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash
583 after a 302 response in the case of not going through a proxy.
584
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +0000585- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
586 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
587 regular expression.
588
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +0000589- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now
590 thread-safe.
591
Brett Cannonbf3157b2008-08-14 05:00:03 +0000592- Silence the DeprecationWarning of rfc822 when it is imported by mimetools
593 since mimetools itself is deprecated. Because modules are cached, all
594 subsequent imports of rfc822 will not raise a visible DeprecationWarning.
595
Antoine Pitrou9fcd4b32008-08-11 17:21:36 +0000596- Issue #3134: shutil referenced undefined WindowsError symbol.
597
Robert Schuppenies14646332008-08-10 11:01:53 +0000598- Issue #1342811: Fix leak in Tkinter.Menu.delete. Commands associated to
599 menu entries were not deleted.
600
Brett Cannon83e81842008-08-09 23:30:55 +0000601- Copied the implementation of reduce() to _functools.reduce() to have a
602 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
603
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +0000604- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise
605 a MemoryError rather than silently stop the iteration.
606
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +0000607- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"
608 to _sre.compile() will now be rejected. This should not affect anybody
609 since the re.compile() function never generates invalid re-bytecode.
610
Skip Montanaroa032bf42008-08-08 22:52:51 +0000611- Issue #3436: Make csv.DictReader's fieldnames attribute a property so that
612 upon first access it can be automatically initialized from the csv file if
613 it wasn't initialized during instantiation.
614
Brett Cannon3aa2a492008-08-06 22:28:09 +0000615- Issue #2338: Create imp.reload() to help with transitioning to Python 3.0 as
616 the reload() built-in has been removed.
617

687-----------------
688
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000689- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
690 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
691 an integer using operator.index().
692
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000693- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
694 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
695
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000696- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
697 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
698
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000699- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
700 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
701 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
702
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000703- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
704 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
705 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
706 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
707 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
708 level.
709
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000710- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
711 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
712 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
713 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
714 all imports from that module to fail.
715
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000716- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
717 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
718 new-style classes.
719
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000720- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
721 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
722 another file in sys.stdout.
723
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000724- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
725 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
726 another thread's dictionary.
727
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000728- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
729 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
730 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
731 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
732 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
733 10, -1).
734
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000735- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
736 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
737 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000738
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000739- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with

748 error when they failed.
749
Martin v. Löwisaabf4042008-08-02 07:20:25 +0000750- Issue #799428: Fix Tkinter.Misc._nametowidget to unwrap Tcl command objects.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000775- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
776 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000777 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000778 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never

796
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000797- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001249- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
1250 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
1251 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
1252 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
1253 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
1254 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
1255 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support

1317-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001318
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001319- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1320 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1321 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1322 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1323 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1324 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1325 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1326 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1327 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1328 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1329 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1330 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1331 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1332 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1333 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1334 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1335 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1336 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1337 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1338 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1339
1340 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1341 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1342 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1343 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1344 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1345 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1346 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1347 access to the underlying socket used.
1348
1349 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1350 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1351 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001352
1353 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001354 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001355 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
1356 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
1357
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001358 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
1359 suite to run in parallel without issue.

Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001638- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1639 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be

Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001646- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1647 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1648 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1649 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1650 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1651 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1652
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001653- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new

Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +00001892- Bug #1683368: The object.__init__() and object.__new__() methods are
1893 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when
1894 either allows excess arguments is when it is not overridden and the

Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +00001897 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
1898 as supported by type.__new__().
Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +00001899
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001900- Patch #1675423: PyComplex_AsCComplex() now tries to convert an
