8================================
9
10*Release date: XX-Aug-2008*
11
12Core and Builtins
13-----------------
14
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +000015- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
16 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
17 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
18
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +000019- Apply security patches from Apple.
20
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +000021- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
22 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
23
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +000024- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
25 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
26
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +000027- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
28 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
29 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
30
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +000031- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
32 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
33 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
34 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
35 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
36 failed have been fixed.
37
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +000038Library
39-------
40
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +000041- Issue #2523: Fix quadratic behaviour when read()ing a binary file without
42 asking for a specific length.
43
Mark Dickinsonfe84cce2008-07-27 06:39:07 +000044- Issue #3449: Update decimal module to use most recent specification
45 (v. 1.68) and tests (v. 2.58) from IBM.
46
Skip Montanarof9ac43f2008-07-27 00:50:41 +000047- Issue 3437: Bug fix in robotparser parsing of Allow: lines.
48

50 on a closed shelf.
51
Georg Brandlf9efabb2008-07-23 15:16:45 +000052- Deprecate the "ast" parser function aliases.
53
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +000054- Issue #3120: On 64-bit Windows the subprocess module was truncating handles.
55
56- Issue #3303: Fix a crash in locale.strcoll() when calling it with
57 invalid arguments.
58
59- Issue #3302: Fix several crashes when calling locale's gettext functions
60 with None arguments.
61
62- Issue #3389: Allow resolving dotted names for handlers in logging
63 configuration files.
64
65- Deprecate the sunaudio module for removal in Python 3.0.
66
Antoine Pitrou5fdfa3e2008-07-25 19:42:26 +000067- Issue #3394: zipfile.writestr sets external attributes when passed a
68 file name rather than a ZipInfo instance, so files are extracted with
69 mode 0600 rather than 000 under Unix.
70
Martin v. Löwis8dbf3642008-08-01 14:10:26 +000071Build
72-----
73
74- Generate the PatternGrammar pickle during "make install".

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +000080*Release date: 17-Jul-2008*
81
Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +000082Core and Builtins
83-----------------
84
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +000085- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
86 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
87 an integer using operator.index().
88
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +000089- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
90 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
91
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +000092- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
93 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
94
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +000095- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
96 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
97 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
98
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +000099- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
100 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
101 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
102 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
103 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
104 level.
105
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000106- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
107 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
108 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
109 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
110 all imports from that module to fail.
111
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000112- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
113 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
114 new-style classes.
115
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000116- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
117 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
118 another file in sys.stdout.
119
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000120- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
121 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
122 another thread's dictionary.
123
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000124- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
125 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
126 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
127 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
128 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
129 10, -1).
130
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000131- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
132 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
133 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000134
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000135- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
136 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into
137 ClearFreeList apis and calls them via gc.collect().
Gregory P. Smith2fe77062008-07-06 03:35:58 +0000138
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000139Library
140-------

147
Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +0000148- Issue #3125: Remove copy_reg in multiprocessing and replace it with
149 ForkingPickler.register() to resolve conflict with ctypes.
150

154 a valid dlerror() message.
155
Thomas Heller2bad6572008-07-15 17:19:50 +0000156- Issue #3258: Fixed a crash when a ctypes POINTER type to an
157 incomplete structure was created.
158

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000165- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
166 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000167 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000168 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
169 merged into trunk.
170
Georg Brandle78fbcc2008-07-05 10:13:36 +0000171- Issue #2663: add filtering capability to shutil.copytree().

176
177- Issue #1746: Correct handling of zipfile archive comments (previously
178 archives with comments over 4k were flagged as invalid). Allow writing
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000179 Zip files with archives by setting the 'comment' attribute of a ZipFile.

185 handling is now the same as that of other special attributes like __name__).
186
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000187- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for
188 removal in Python 3.0 in favor of urllib2.urlopen().

Gregory P. Smith3b1e6b22008-07-07 04:31:58 +0000194 properly when raising an exception due to the bz2file being closed.
195 Prevents a deadlock.
196
Gregory P. Smithc4691ec2008-07-07 05:09:12 +0000197- Issue #3094: httplib.HTTPSConnection Host: headers no longer include the
198 redundant ":443" port number designation when the connection is using the
199 default https port (443).
200

242 argument being anything other than a dict or None. Also fixed a bug in error
243 handling when 'message' and 'category' were both set to None, triggering a
244 bus error.
245
Amaury Forgeot d'Arca8919fe2008-06-16 19:12:42 +0000246- Issue #3100: Corrected a crash on deallocation of a subclassed weakref which

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000636- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
637 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
638 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
639 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
640 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
641 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
642 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support
643 for the ``line`` argument will raise a DeprecationWarning.

Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000705
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000706- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
707 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
708 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
709 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
710 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
711 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
712 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
713 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
714 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
715 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
716 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
717 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
718 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
719 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
720 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
721 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
722 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
723 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
724 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
725 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
726
727 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
728 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
729 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
730 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
731 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
732 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
733 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
734 access to the underlying socket used.
735
736 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
737 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
738 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000739
740 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000741 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000742 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
743 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
744
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000745 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
746 suite to run in parallel without issue.

Facundo Batistafc2d0102008-02-23 12:01:13 +00001023 issue 215555 for a discussion.
1024
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001025- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1026 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1027 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1028 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1029 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1030 module is:
1031 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1032
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001033- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1034 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1035 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1036 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1037 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1038 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1039
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001040- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1041 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1042 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1043 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1044 PyObject_Format().
1045
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001046- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1047 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1048 state.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +00001049
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001050- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001051 prevent a possible crash: an Abstract Base Class would try to access

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001057- Clear all free lists during a gc.collect() of the highest generation
1058 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
1059 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001060
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001061- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a
1062 subclass of collections.defaultdict, if its default_factory is set
1063 to a bound method.

1074
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001075- Issue #1983: Fixed return type of fork(), fork1() and forkpty()
1076 calls. Python expected the return type int but the fork familie
1077 returns pi_t.
Christian Heimes951cc0f2008-01-31 23:08:23 +00001078
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001079- Issue #1678380: Fix a bug that identifies 0j and -0j when they

1093 produced the generator.
Georg Brandl0cdf9a32008-01-26 14:14:20 +00001094
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001095- Issue #1920: "while 0" statements were completely removed by the
1096 compiler, even in the presence of an "else" clause, which is
1097 supposed to be run when the condition is false. Now the compiler
