36
Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +000037Core and Builtins
38-----------------
39
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +000040- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
41 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
42 an integer using operator.index().
43
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +000044- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
45 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
46
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +000047- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
48 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
49
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +000050- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
51 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
52 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
53
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +000054- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
55 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
56 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
57 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
58 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
59 level.
60
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +000061- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
62 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
63 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
64 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
65 all imports from that module to fail.
66
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +000067- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
68 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
69 new-style classes.
70
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +000071- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
72 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
73 another file in sys.stdout.
74
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +000075- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
76 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
77 another thread's dictionary.
78
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +000079- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
80 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
81 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
82 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
83 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
84 10, -1).
85
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +000086- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
87 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
88 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +000089
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +000090- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
91 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into
92 ClearFreeList apis and calls them via gc.collect().
Gregory P. Smith2fe77062008-07-06 03:35:58 +000093
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +000094Library

102
Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +0000103- Issue #3125: Remove copy_reg in multiprocessing and replace it with
104 ForkingPickler.register() to resolve conflict with ctypes.
105

109 a valid dlerror() message.
110
Thomas Heller2bad6572008-07-15 17:19:50 +0000111- Issue #3258: Fixed a crash when a ctypes POINTER type to an
112 incomplete structure was created.
113
Brett Cannon3d0b9f02008-07-13 01:15:07 +0000114- Issue #3339: dummy_thread.acquire() should not return None.
115

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000120- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
121 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000122 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000123 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
124 merged into trunk.
125
Georg Brandle78fbcc2008-07-05 10:13:36 +0000126- Issue #2663: add filtering capability to shutil.copytree().

131
132- Issue #1746: Correct handling of zipfile archive comments (previously

140 handling is now the same as that of other special attributes like __name__).
141
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000142- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for

153 redundant ":443" port number designation when the connection is using the
154 default https port (443).

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000591- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
592 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
593 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
594 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
595 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
596 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
597 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support

Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000660
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000661- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
662 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
663 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
664 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
665 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
666 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
667 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
668 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
669 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
670 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
671 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
672 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
673 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
674 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
675 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
676 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
677 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
678 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
679 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
680 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
681
682 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
683 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
684 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
685 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
686 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
687 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
688 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
689 access to the underlying socket used.
690
691 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
692 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
693 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000694
695 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000696 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,

698 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
699

701 suite to run in parallel without issue.

Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +0000980- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
981 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
982 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
983 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
984 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
985 module is:
986 from future_builtins import hex, oct
987
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +0000988- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
989 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
990 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
991 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
992 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
993 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
994
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +0000995- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
996 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
