16 case, even when converting the value to a string failed.
17
Georg Brandl871f1bc2007-03-12 13:17:36 +000018- The dir() function has been extended to call the __dir__() method on
19 its argument, if it exists. If not, it will work like before. This allows
20 customizing the output of dir() in the presence of a __getattr__().
21
Collin Winter276887b2007-03-12 16:11:39 +000022- Patch #922167: Python no longer segfaults when faced with infinitely
23 self-recursive reload() calls (as reported by bug #742342).

33 a PYTHONSTARTUP file is used.
34
Georg Brandl49aafc92007-03-07 00:34:46 +000035- Variant of patch #697613: don't exit the interpreter on a SystemExit
36 exception if the -i command line option or PYTHONINSPECT environment
37 variable is given, but break into the interactive interpreter just like
38 on other exceptions or normal program exit.

51
Brett Cannon129bd522007-01-30 21:34:36 +000052- PEP 352: Raising a string exception now triggers a TypeError. Attempting to
53 catch a string exception raises DeprecationWarning.
54
Brett Cannonf5bee302007-01-23 23:21:22 +000055- Bug #1377858: Fix the segfaulting of the interpreter when an object created

162 occurs in __bases__, it must occur before any non-type bases, e.g.
163 before regular classes. 2) If you assign to __bases__, you may not

706Core and builtins
707-----------------
708
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +0000709- Unicode objects will no longer raise an exception when being
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000710 compared equal or unequal to a string and a UnicodeDecodeError
711 exception occurs, e.g. as result of a decoding failure.
Neal Norwitz56423e52006-08-13 18:11:08 +0000712
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +0000713 Instead, the equal (==) and unequal (!=) comparison operators will
714 now issue a UnicodeWarning and interpret the two objects as
715 unequal. The UnicodeWarning can be filtered as desired using
716 the warning framework, e.g. silenced completely, turned into an
717 exception, logged, etc.
718
719 Note that compare operators other than equal and unequal will still
720 raise UnicodeDecodeError exceptions as they've always done.
Neal Norwitz8a87f5d2006-08-12 17:03:09 +0000721
Marc-André Lemburg757ea272006-08-14 11:44:34 +0000722- Fix segfault when doing string formatting on subclasses of long.
723
724- Fix bug related to __len__ functions using values > 2**32 on 64-bit machines
725 with new-style classes.
726
727- Fix bug related to __len__ functions returning negative values with
728 classic classes.
729
730- Patch #1538606, Fix __index__() clipping. There were some problems
731 discovered with the API and how integers that didn't fit into Py_ssize_t
732 were handled. This patch attempts to provide enough alternatives
733 to effectively use __index__.
734
Martin v. Löwisab2f8f72006-08-09 07:57:39 +0000735- Bug #1536021: __hash__ may now return long int; the final hash
736 value is obtained by invoking hash on the long int.
737
Thomas Hellerab1049c2006-08-08 17:37:00 +0000738- Bug #1536786: buffer comparison could emit a RuntimeWarning.
739
Georg Brandl7e3ba2a2006-08-06 08:23:54 +0000740- Bug #1535165: fixed a segfault in input() and raw_input() when
741 sys.stdin is closed.
742
Thomas Heller74d36f02006-08-04 18:17:40 +0000743- On Windows, the PyErr_Warn function is now exported from
744 the Python dll again.
745
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +0000746- Bug #1191458: tracing over for loops now produces a line event
747 on each iteration. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc
748 magic number. This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5c1
749 will be regenerated.
750
Neal Norwitz0cbd8052006-08-04 05:09:28 +0000751- Bug #1333982: string/number constants were inappropriately stored
752 in the byte code and co_consts even if they were not used, ie
753 immediately popped off the stack.
754
Georg Brandle9462c72006-08-04 18:03:37 +0000755- Fixed a reference-counting problem in property().

758Library
759-------
760
Neil Schemenauer4c6b0d52006-08-16 23:38:05 +0000761- Fix a bug in the ``compiler`` package that caused invalid code to be
762 generated for generator expressions.
763
Marc-André Lemburg574cfea2006-08-16 16:11:01 +0000764- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0. The change to
765 keep it programmatically in sync with the Python version running
766 the code (introduced in 2.5b3) has been reverted. It will continue
767 to be maintained manually as static string literal.
768
Andrew M. Kuchlingc13324e2006-08-16 17:11:18 +0000769- If the Python part of a ctypes callback function returns None,
Thomas Hellerb4a0cf12006-08-16 15:10:12 +0000770 and this cannot be converted to the required C type, an exception is
771 printed with PyErr_WriteUnraisable. Before this change, the C
Andrew M. Kuchlingc13324e2006-08-16 17:11:18 +0000772 callback returned arbitrary values to the calling code.
Thomas Hellerb4a0cf12006-08-16 15:10:12 +0000773
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000774- The __repr__ method of a NULL ctypes.py_object() no longer raises
Thomas Hellerb0aa98f2006-08-16 14:07:44 +0000775 an exception.
776
Tim Petersc10c9d02006-09-05 02:18:09 +0000777- uuid.UUID now has a bytes_le attribute. This returns the UUID in
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000778 little-endian byte order for Windows. In addition, uuid.py gained some
Anthony Baxter58179592006-08-16 13:08:25 +0000779 workarounds for clocks with low resolution, to stop the code yielding
780 duplicate UUIDs.
781
Kurt B. Kaiserd112bc72006-08-16 05:01:42 +0000782- Patch #1540892: site.py Quitter() class attempts to close sys.stdin
783 before raising SystemExit, allowing IDLE to honor quit() and exit().
784
Neal Norwitzbf8c1952006-08-15 04:14:57 +0000785- Bug #1224621: make tabnanny recognize IndentationErrors raised by tokenize.
786
Georg Brandl7a1af772006-08-14 21:55:28 +0000787- Patch #1536071: trace.py should now find the full module name of a

Georg Brandl0a7d1bb2006-08-11 07:26:10 +0000790- logging's atexit hook now runs even if the rest of the module has
791 already been cleaned up.
792

Neal Norwitzff4b63b2006-08-04 04:50:21 +0000795- Bug #1531405, format_exception no longer raises an exception if
796 str(exception) raised an exception.
797

Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000872- _PyWeakref_GetWeakrefCount() now returns a Py_ssize_t; it previously
Neal Norwitzc5e060d2006-08-02 06:14:22 +0000873 returned a long (see PEP 353).
874
Neal Norwitzf71ec5a2006-07-30 06:57:04 +0000875- Bug #1515471: string.replace() accepts character buffers again.
876
Neal Norwitz07aadb12006-07-30 06:55:48 +0000877- Add PyErr_WarnEx() so C code can pass the stacklevel to warnings.warn().
878 This provides the proper warning for struct.pack().

883
Phillip J. Ebyf7575d02006-07-28 21:12:07 +0000884- Bug #1529871: The speed enhancement patch #921466 broke Python's compliance
885 with PEP 302. This was fixed by adding an ``imp.NullImporter`` type that is
886 used in ``sys.path_importer_cache`` to cache non-directory paths and avoid
887 excessive filesystem operations during imports.
888
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +0000889- Bug #1521947: When checking for overflow, ``PyOS_strtol()`` used some
890 operations on signed longs that are formally undefined by C.
891 Unfortunately, at least one compiler now cares about that, so complicated
892 the code to make that compiler happy again.
893

908
Andrew M. Kuchling93c928e2006-07-26 17:19:39 +0000909- Bug #1520864: unpacking singleton tuples in a 'for' loop (for x, in) works
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000910 again. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc magic number.
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +0000911 This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5b3 will be regenerated.

Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000914 The Python core compiles again, and, in a build without threads, the
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +0000915 new ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dictionary with one entry,

925 for stream decoder, but final=True for the decode function.
926
Georg Brandl07fec3a2006-08-01 18:49:24 +0000927- os.urandom no longer masks unrelated exceptions like SystemExit or

Georg Brandle34ac7c2006-07-30 11:07:23 +0000933- Bug #1002398: The documentation for os.path.sameopenfile now correctly
934 refers to file descriptors, not file objects.
935
Tim Petersc10c9d02006-09-05 02:18:09 +0000936- The renaming of the xml package to xmlcore, and the import hackery done
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000937 to make it appear at both names, has been removed. Bug #1511497,

939
Georg Brandledd9b0d2006-07-29 09:33:26 +0000940- Bug #1441397: The compiler module now recognizes module and function
941 docstrings correctly as it did in Python 2.4.
942
Tim Peters6f681472006-07-27 23:44:37 +0000943- Bug #1529297: The rewrite of doctest for Python 2.4 unintentionally
944 lost that tests are sorted by name before being run. This rarely
945 matters for well-written tests, but can create baffling symptoms if
946 side effects from one test to the next affect outcomes. ``DocTestFinder``

948
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000949- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0, and is now kept

968
Brett Cannoncaebe222006-07-18 04:41:36 +0000969- Bug #1520914: Change time.strftime() to accept a zero for any position in its
970 argument tuple. For arguments where zero is illegal, the value is forced to
971 the minimum value that is correct. This is to support an undocumented but
972 common way people used to fill in inconsequential information in the time
973 tuple pre-2.4.
974
Bob Ippolito5ea4bf12006-07-15 16:53:15 +0000975- Patch #1220874: Update the binhex module for Mach-O.
976
Barry Warsawb110bad2006-07-21 14:51:07 +0000977- The email package has improved RFC 2231 support, specifically for
978 recognizing the difference between encoded (name*0*=<blah>) and non-encoded
979 (name*0=<blah>) parameter continuations. This may change the types of
980 values returned from email.message.Message.get_param() and friends.
981 Specifically in some cases where non-encoded continuations were used,
982 get_param() used to return a 3-tuple of (None, None, string) whereas now it
983 will just return the string (since non-encoded continuations don't have
984 charset and language parts).
985
986 Also, whereas % values were decoded in all parameter continuations, they are
987 now only decoded in encoded parameter parts.
988
Ronald Oussoren3075e162006-07-25 20:28:55 +0000989- Bug #1517990: IDLE keybindings on MacOS X now work correctly
990
991- Bug #1517996: IDLE now longer shows the default Tk menu when a
992 path browser, class browser or debugger is the frontmost window on MacOS X
993
Barry Warsaw00decd72006-07-27 23:43:15 +0000994- Patch #1520294: Support for getset and member descriptors in types.py,
995 inspect.py, and pydoc.py. Specifically, this allows for querying the type
996 of an object against these built-in types and more importantly, for getting
997 their docstrings printed in the interactive interpreter's help() function.

1009
Tim Peters9cab5932006-07-28 00:30:00 +00001010- The ``__reduce__()`` method of the new ``collections.defaultdict`` had

1020 arrays, without the need to check the array size before.
1021
Thomas Heller6e1ad2e2006-07-13 17:05:13 +00001022- Bug #1521375: When the code in ctypes.util.find_library was

Thomas Heller2bdf29e2006-07-13 17:01:14 +00001024 /dev/null in certain cases; this is now fixed.
1025
Thomas Heller47d7a062006-07-12 08:43:47 +00001026- Bug #1467450: On Mac OS X 10.3, RTLD_GLOBAL is now used as the

Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +00001028
Thomas Hellerb4dc2ef2006-07-13 09:53:47 +00001029- Because of a misspelled preprocessor symbol, ctypes was always
1030 compiled without thread support; this is now fixed.
1031
Gregory P. Smith641cddf2006-07-28 01:35:25 +00001032- pybsddb Bug #1527939: bsddb module DBEnv dbremove and dbrename
1033 methods now allow their database parameter to be None as the
1034 sleepycat API allows.
1035
Matt Flemingec926502006-07-28 11:27:27 +00001036- Bug #1526460: Fix socketmodule compile on NetBSD as it has a different
1037 bluetooth API compared with Linux and FreeBSD.

Brett Cannonf23ad3d2006-07-25 17:32:20 +00001039Tests
1040-----
1041
1042- Bug #1501330: Change test_ossaudiodev to be much more tolerant in terms of
1043 how long the test file should take to play. Now accepts taking 2.93 secs
1044 (exact time) +/- 10% instead of the hard-coded 3.1 sec.
1045
Georg Brandl4793aa32006-07-28 18:31:39 +00001046- Patch #1529686: The standard tests ``test_defaultdict``, ``test_iterlen``,
1047 ``test_uuid`` and ``test_email_codecs`` didn't actually run any tests when
1048 run via ``regrtest.py``. Now they do.

1058- PythonLauncher now works correctly when the path to the script contains
1059 characters that are treated specially by the shell (such as quotes).
1060
1061- Bug #1527397: PythonLauncher now launches scripts with the working directory
1062 set to the directory that contains the script instead of the user home
Tim Peters4643c2f2006-08-10 22:45:34 +00001063 directory. That latter was an implementation accident and not what users

1077
Neil Schemenauer0e07b602006-07-09 16:16:34 +00001078- Bug #1501934: The scope of global variables that are locally assigned
1079 using augmented assignment is now correctly determined.
1080
Martin v. Löwisd5cfa542006-07-03 13:47:40 +00001081- Bug #927248: Recursive method-wrapper objects can now safely

1083
Martin v. Löwisfcfff0a2006-07-03 12:19:50 +00001084- Bug #1417699: Reject locale-specific decimal point in float()
1085 and atof().
1086
Hye-Shik Change6a1cb92006-06-23 21:16:18 +00001087- Bug #1511381: codec_getstreamcodec() in codec.c is corrected to
1088 omit a default "error" argument for NULL pointer. This allows
1089 the parser to take a codec from cjkcodecs again.
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +00001090
Neal Norwitzfb48afa2006-07-08 05:31:37 +00001091- Bug #1519018: 'as' is now validated properly in import statements.
1092
Neal Norwitz28746ab2006-07-09 22:14:42 +00001093- On 64 bit systems, int literals that use less than 64 bits are
1094 now ints rather than longs.
1095
Neal Norwitzed657552006-07-10 00:04:44 +00001096- Bug #1512814, Fix incorrect lineno's when code at module scope
1097 started after line 256.
1098
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +00001099- New function ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dict mapping thread
1100 id to topmost thread stack frame. This is for expert use, and is
1101 especially useful for debugging application deadlocks. The functionality
1102 was previously available in Fazal Majid's ``threadframe`` extension
1103 module, but it wasn't possible to do this in a wholly threadsafe way from
1104 an extension.

1113
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +00001114- Bug #1508010: msvccompiler now requires the DISTUTILS_USE_SDK
Martin v. Löwis8d656812006-07-10 07:23:48 +00001115 environment variable to be set in order to the SDK environment
1116 for finding the compiler, include files, etc.

1121
Thomas Woutersadd19112006-07-05 11:03:49 +00001122- string.Template() now correctly handles tuple-values. Previously,
1123 multi-value tuples would raise an exception and single-value tuples would
1124 be treated as the value they contain, instead.
1125
Martin v. Löwisede77f52006-07-03 13:01:35 +00001126- Bug #822974: Honor timeout in telnetlib.{expect,read_until}

1142 socket again, which then gets closed as it becomes unreferenced.
1143
Fred Drake10497c82006-06-29 02:57:48 +00001144- Bug #1504333: Make sgmllib support angle brackets in quoted
1145 attribute values.

1148 sgmllib ('[' and ']' were not accepted).
1149
Georg Brandl1be63af2006-06-28 20:23:25 +00001150- Fix a bug in the turtle module's end_fill function.
1151
Brett Cannon53ab5b72006-06-22 16:49:14 +00001152- Bug #1510580: The 'warnings' module improperly required that a Warning
1153 category be either a types.ClassType and a subclass of Warning. The proper
1154 check is just that it is a subclass with Warning as the documentation states.
1155
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +00001156- The compiler module now correctly compiles the new try-except-finally

1162 shutdown when fileConfig() was called multiple times.
1163
Gerhard Häring762fbd32006-07-02 17:48:30 +00001164- The sqlite3 module did cut off data from the SQLite database at the first
1165 null character before sending it to a custom converter. This has been fixed
1166 now.
1167
Neal Norwitz0f8b31a2006-06-28 06:28:31 +00001168Extension Modules
1169-----------------
1170
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +00001171- #1494314: Fix a regression with high-numbered sockets in 2.4.3. This
1172 means that select() on sockets > FD_SETSIZE (typically 1024) work again.
1173 The patch makes sockets use poll() internally where available.
Anthony Baxter93ab5fa2006-07-11 02:04:09 +00001174
Thomas Hellerb9cb84f2006-07-10 11:17:37 +00001175- Assigning None to pointer type fields in ctypes structures possible
1176 overwrote the wrong fields, this is fixed now.
1177
1178- Fixed a segfault in _ctypes when ctypes.wintypes were imported
1179 on non-Windows platforms.
1180
1181- Bug #1518190: The ctypes.c_void_p constructor now accepts any
1182 integer or long, without range checking.
1183
1184- Patch #1517790: It is now possible to use custom objects in the ctypes
1185 foreign function argtypes sequence as long as they provide a from_param
1186 method, no longer is it required that the object is a ctypes type.
1187
1188- The '_ctypes' extension module now works when Python is configured
1189 with the --without-threads option.
1190
Martin v. Löwisee1e06d2006-07-02 18:44:00 +00001191- Bug #1513646: os.access on Windows now correctly determines write
1192 access, again.
1193
Neal Norwitz0f8b31a2006-06-28 06:28:31 +00001194- Bug #1512695: cPickle.loads could crash if it was interrupted with
1195 a KeyboardInterrupt.
1196
Neal Norwitza12aa882006-07-06 06:45:08 +00001197- Bug #1296433: parsing XML with a non-default encoding and
1198 a CharacterDataHandler could crash the interpreter in pyexpat.
1199
Neal Norwitz2a30cd02006-07-10 01:18:57 +00001200- Patch #1516912: improve Modules support for OpenVMS.

1206
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +00001207- 'configure' now detects the zlib library the same way as distutils.
Thomas Woutersfc34f6c2006-07-06 10:48:28 +00001208 Previously, the slight difference could cause compilation errors of the
1209 'zlib' module on systems with more than one version of zlib.
1210
Martin v. Löwis4cbd05c2006-07-06 07:05:21 +00001211- The MSI compileall step was fixed to also support a TARGETDIR

1215 of Tcl/Tk.
1216
Neal Norwitzc315a0f2006-06-27 04:28:56 +00001217- Bug #1513032: 'make install' failed on FreeBSD 5.3 due to lib-old
Neal Norwitz3b6b8012006-06-27 04:12:58 +00001218 trying to be installed even though it's empty.

1242Core and builtins
1243-----------------
1244
Georg Brandla56b9152006-06-19 06:35:54 +00001245- Patch #1507676: Error messages returned by invalid abstract object operations
1246 (such as iterating over an integer) have been improved and now include the
1247 type of the offending object to help with debugging.
1248
Brett Cannonea3912b2006-06-13 21:46:41 +00001249- Bug #992017: A classic class that defined a __coerce__() method that returned
1250 its arguments swapped would infinitely recurse and segfault the interpreter.
1251
Neal Norwitz909eb122006-06-12 02:13:21 +00001252- Fix the socket tests so they can be run concurrently.
1253
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +00001254- Removed 5 integers from C frame objects (PyFrameObject).
Vinay Sajip28e57612006-07-01 10:45:20 +00001255 f_nlocals, f_ncells, f_nfreevars, f_stack_size, f_restricted.
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +00001256
Brett Cannon22565aa2006-06-09 22:31:23 +00001257- Bug #532646: object.__call__() will continue looking for the __call__
1258 attribute on objects until one without one is found. This leads to recursion
1259 when you take a class and set its __call__ attribute to an instance of the
1260 class. Originally fixed for classic classes, but this fix is for new-style.
1261 Removes the infinite_rec_3 crasher.
1262
Georg Brandl24250812006-06-09 18:45:48 +00001263- The string and unicode methods startswith() and endswith() now accept
1264 a tuple of prefixes/suffixes to look for. Implements RFE #1491485.
1265
Brett Cannonde3b0522006-06-08 17:00:45 +00001266- Buffer objects, at the C level, never used the char buffer
1267 implementation even when the char buffer for the wrapped object was
1268 explicitly requested (originally returned the read or write buffer).
1269 Now a TypeError is raised if the char buffer is not present but is
1270 requested.
1271
Georg Brandlddbaa662006-06-04 21:56:52 +00001272- Patch #1346214: Statements like "if 0: suite" are now again optimized
1273 away like they were in Python 2.4.
1274
Georg Brandlb7c8f542006-05-27 12:30:25 +00001275- Builtin exceptions are now full-blown new-style classes instead of
1276 instances pretending to be classes, which speeds up exception handling
1277 by about 80% in comparison to 2.5a2.
1278
Martin v. Löwisd004fc82006-05-27 08:36:52 +00001279- Patch #1494554: Update unicodedata.numeric and unicode.isnumeric to
1280 Unicode 4.1.
1281
Georg Brandlf4ef1162006-05-26 18:03:31 +00001282- Patch #921466: sys.path_importer_cache is now used to cache valid and
1283 invalid file paths for the built-in import machinery which leads to
1284 fewer open calls on startup.
1285
Tim Peters696cf432006-05-24 21:10:40 +00001286- Patch #1442927: ``long(str, base)`` is now up to 6x faster for non-power-
1287 of-2 bases. The largest speedup is for inputs with about 1000 decimal
1288 digits. Conversion from non-power-of-2 bases remains quadratic-time in
1289 the number of input digits (it was and remains linear-time for bases
1290 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32).
1291
Tim Petersb713ec22006-05-23 18:45:30 +00001292- Bug #1334662: ``int(string, base)`` could deliver a wrong answer
1293 when ``base`` was not 2, 4, 8, 10, 16 or 32, and ``string`` represented
1294 an integer close to ``sys.maxint``. This was repaired by patch
1295 #1335972, which also gives a nice speedup.
1296
Richard Jonescebbefc2006-05-23 18:28:17 +00001297- Patch #1337051: reduced size of frame objects.
1298
1299- PyErr_NewException now accepts a tuple of base classes as its
1300 "base" parameter.
1301
Richard Jones7c88dcc2006-05-23 10:37:38 +00001302- Patch #876206: function call speedup by retaining allocated frame
1303 objects.
1304
Georg Brandl7b90e162006-05-18 07:01:27 +00001305- Bug #1462152: file() now checks more thoroughly for invalid mode
1306 strings and removes a possible "U" before passing the mode to the
1307 C library function.
1308
Neal Norwitz1004a532006-05-15 07:17:23 +00001309- Patch #1488312, Fix memory alignment problem on SPARC in unicode
1310
Neal Norwitz373f0a72006-05-15 07:04:36 +00001311- Bug #1487966: Fix SystemError with conditional expression in assignment
1312
Martin v. Löwis879768d2006-05-11 13:28:43 +00001313- WindowsError now has two error code attributes: errno, which carries
1314 the error values from errno.h, and winerror, which carries the error
1315 values from winerror.h. Previous versions put the winerror.h values
1316 (from GetLastError()) into the errno attribute.
1317
Martin v. Löwis77736712006-05-04 05:51:03 +00001318- Patch #1475845: Raise IndentationError for unexpected indent.
1319
Neal Norwitzc4edb0e2006-05-02 04:43:14 +00001320- Patch #1479181: split open() and file() from being aliases for each other.
1321
Tim Peters44bd9862006-06-01 13:49:23 +00001322- Patch #1497053 & bug #1275608: Exceptions occurring in ``__eq__()``
1323 methods were always silently ignored by dictionaries when comparing keys.
1324 They are now passed through (except when using the C API function
1325 ``PyDict_GetItem()``, whose semantics did not change).
1326
1327- Bug #1456209: In some obscure cases it was possible for a class with a
1328 custom ``__eq__()`` method to confuse dict internals when class instances
1329 were used as a dict's keys and the ``__eq__()`` method mutated the dict.
1330 No, you don't have any code that did this ;-)

1336
1337- Patch #1462338: Upgrade pyexpat to expat 2.0.0
1338
Brett Cannon6ee7d012006-06-08 16:23:04 +00001339- Change binascii.hexlify to accept a read-only buffer instead of only a char
1340 buffer and actually follow its documentation.
1341
Hye-Shik Chang58ce5bc2006-06-05 00:59:54 +00001342- Fixed a potentially invalid memory access of CJKCodecs' shift-jis decoder.
1343
Nick Coghlanc649ec52006-05-29 12:43:05 +00001344- Patch #1478788 (modified version): The functional extension module has
1345 been renamed to _functools and a functools Python wrapper module added.
1346 This provides a home for additional function related utilities that are
1347 not specifically about functional programming. See PEP 309.
1348
Bob Ippolito7ccc95a2006-05-23 19:11:34 +00001349- Patch #1493701: performance enhancements for struct module.

1354 copy() method.
1355
Andrew MacIntyre92913322006-06-13 15:04:24 +00001356- Patch #1454481: thread stack size is now tunable at runtime for thread

1358
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +00001359- On Win32, os.listdir now supports arbitrarily-long Unicode path names
1360 (up to the system limit of 32K characters).
1361
1362- Use Win32 API to implement os.{access,chdir,chmod,mkdir,remove,rename,rmdir,utime}.
1363 As a result, these functions now raise WindowsError instead of OSError.
1364
Tim Peters7a822da2006-05-25 21:50:17 +00001365- ``time.clock()`` on Win64 should use the high-performance Windows
1366 ``QueryPerformanceCounter()`` now (as was already the case on 32-bit
1367 Windows platforms).
1368
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +00001369- Calling Tk_Init twice is refused if the first call failed as that
1370 may deadlock.
1371
Gregory P. Smith0459e4d2006-06-05 02:02:25 +00001372- bsddb: added the DB_ARCH_REMOVE flag and fixed db.DBEnv.log_archive() to
1373 accept it without potentially using an uninitialized pointer.
1374
1375- bsddb: added support for the DBEnv.log_stat() and DBEnv.lsn_reset() methods
1376 assuming BerkeleyDB >= 4.0 and 4.4 respectively. [pybsddb project SF

1384
Gregory P. Smith3c228b12006-06-05 23:59:37 +00001385- bsddb: the __len__ method of a DB object has been fixed to return correct
1386 results. It could previously incorrectly return 0 in some cases.
1387 Fixes SF bug 1493322 (pybsddb bug 1184012).
1388
Gregory P. Smithff7d9912006-06-08 05:17:08 +00001389- bsddb: the bsddb.dbtables Modify method now raises the proper error and
1390 aborts the db transaction safely when a modifier callback fails.
1391 Fixes SF python patch/bug #1408584.
1392
Gregory P. Smith506f7b52006-06-15 08:52:32 +00001393- bsddb: multithreaded DB access using the simple bsddb module interface
Vinay Sajip28e57612006-07-01 10:45:20 +00001394 now works reliably. It has been updated to use automatic BerkeleyDB

1426 double-byte encodings.
1427
Tim Peters43898b42006-06-14 04:09:25 +00001428- ``difflib``'s ``SequenceMatcher.get_matching_blocks()`` was changed to
1429 guarantee that adjacent triples in the return list always describe
1430 non-adjacent blocks. Previously, a pair of matching blocks could end
1431 up being described by multiple adjacent triples that formed a partition
1432 of the matching pair.
1433
Greg Ward0e0c9f42006-06-11 16:24:11 +00001434- Bug #1498146: fix optparse to handle Unicode strings in option help,

1441
Andrew M. Kuchling0873b112006-06-09 16:46:51 +00001442- The wsgiref package has been added to the standard library.
1443
Nick Coghlan676725d2006-06-08 13:54:49 +00001444- The functions update_wrapper() and wraps() have been added to the functools
1445 module. These make it easier to copy relevant metadata from the original
1446 function when writing wrapper functions.
1447

Tim Petersbf0400a2006-06-05 01:43:03 +00001450
Martin v. Löwis3f767792006-06-04 19:36:28 +00001451- Patch #1359618: Speed up charmap encoder by using a trie structure
1452 for lookup.
1453
Tim Petersd609b1a2006-06-02 23:22:51 +00001454- The functions in the ``pprint`` module now sort dictionaries by key
1455 before computing the display. Before 2.5, ``pprint`` sorted a dictionary
1456 if and only if its display required more than one line, although that
1457 wasn't documented. The new behavior increases predictability; e.g.,
1458 using ``pprint.pprint(a_dict)`` in a doctest is now reliable.
1459
Georg Brandlfd9a4b12006-05-29 20:57:01 +00001460- Patch #1497027: try HTTP digest auth before basic auth in urllib2

1479
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +00001480- Patch #721464: pdb.Pdb instances can now be given explicit stdin and
1481 stdout arguments, making it possible to redirect input and output
1482 for remote debugging.
1483
1484- Patch #1484695: Update the tarfile module to version 0.8. This fixes
1485 a couple of issues, notably handling of long file names using the
1486 GNU LONGNAME extension.
1487
1488- Patch #1478292. ``doctest.register_optionflag(name)`` shouldn't create a
1489 new flag when ``name`` is already the name of an option flag.

1532

1535Core and builtins
1536-----------------
1537
Thomas Heller1b046642006-04-18 18:51:06 +00001538- Bug #1465834: 'bdist_wininst preinstall script support' was fixed
1539 by converting these apis from macros into exported functions again:
1540
1541 PyParser_SimpleParseFile PyParser_SimpleParseString PyRun_AnyFile
1542 PyRun_AnyFileEx PyRun_AnyFileFlags PyRun_File PyRun_FileEx
1543 PyRun_FileFlags PyRun_InteractiveLoop PyRun_InteractiveOne
1544 PyRun_SimpleFile PyRun_SimpleFileEx PyRun_SimpleString
1545 PyRun_String Py_CompileString
1546
Martin v. Löwis45294a92006-04-18 06:24:08 +00001547- Under COUNT_ALLOCS, types are not necessarily immortal anymore.
1548
Martin v. Löwis19ab6c92006-04-16 18:55:50 +00001549- All uses of PyStructSequence_InitType have been changed to initialize
1550 the type objects only once, even if the interpreter is initialized
1551 multiple times.
1552
Neal Norwitz61546162006-04-14 05:20:28 +00001553- Bug #1454485, array.array('u') could crash the interpreter. This was
1554 due to PyArgs_ParseTuple(args, 'u#', ...) trying to convert buffers (strings)
1555 to unicode when it didn't make sense. 'u#' now requires a unicode string.
1556
1557- Py_UNICODE is unsigned. It was always documented as unsigned, but
1558 due to a bug had a signed value in previous versions.
1559
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001560- Patch #837242: ``id()`` of any Python object always gives a positive
1561 number now, which might be a long integer. ``PyLong_FromVoidPtr`` and
1562 ``PyLong_AsVoidPtr`` have been changed accordingly. Note that it has
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001563 never been correct to implement a ``__hash()__`` method that returns the
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001564 ``id()`` of an object:
Martin v. Löwis0bc2ab92006-04-10 20:28:17 +00001565
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001566 def __hash__(self):
1567 return id(self) # WRONG
1568
1569 because a hash result must be a (short) Python int but it was always
1570 possible for ``id()`` to return a Python long. However, because ``id()``
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001571 could return negative values before, on a 32-bit box an ``id()`` result
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001572 was always usable as a hash value before this patch. That's no longer
1573 necessarily so.
1574
1575- Python on OS X 10.3 and above now uses dlopen() (via dynload_shlib.c)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001576 to load extension modules and now provides the dl module. As a result,
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001577 sys.setdlopenflags() now works correctly on these systems. (SF patch
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001578 #1454844)
1579
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00001580- Patch #1463867: enhanced garbage collection to allow cleanup of cycles
1581 involving generators that have paused outside of any ``try`` or ``with``
1582 blocks. (In 2.5a1, a paused generator that was part of a reference
1583 cycle could not be garbage collected, regardless of whether it was
1584 paused in a ``try`` or ``with`` block.)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001585

1591
Georg Brandlbbfe4fa2006-04-11 06:47:43 +00001592- Bug #1467952: os.listdir() now correctly raises an error if readdir()
1593 fails with an error condition.
1594

1598 the cachesize parameter.
1599
1600- Bug #1149413: bsddb.*open() no longer raises an exception when using
1601 a temporary db (file=None) with the 'n' flag to truncate on open.
1602
1603- Bug #1332852: bsddb module minimum BerkeleyDB version raised to 3.3
1604 as older versions cause excessive test failures.
Gregory P. Smith7f5b6f42006-04-08 07:10:51 +00001605
Armin Rigoa9017c32006-04-19 11:50:27 +00001606- Patch #1062014: AF_UNIX sockets under Linux have a special
1607 abstract namespace that is now fully supported.

1614 abusing errno.
1615
Tim Peters711bf302006-04-25 03:31:36 +00001616- Patch #1475231: ``doctest`` has a new ``SKIP`` option, which causes
1617 a doctest to be skipped (the code is not run, and the expected output
1618 or exception is ignored).
1619
Nick Coghlanda2268f2006-04-24 04:37:15 +00001620- Fixed contextlib.nested to cope with exceptions being raised and
1621 caught inside exit handlers.
1622
Greg Wardab05edc2006-04-23 03:47:58 +00001623- Updated optparse module to Optik 1.5.1 (allow numeric constants in
1624 hex, octal, or binary; add ``append_const`` action; keep going if
1625 gettext cannot be imported; added ``OptionParser.destroy()`` method;
1626 added ``epilog`` for better help generation).
1627
Tim Peters21fbd572006-04-21 21:18:10 +00001628- Bug #1473760: ``tempfile.TemporaryFile()`` could hang on Windows, when
1629 called from a thread spawned as a side effect of importing a module.
1630
Phillip J. Eby17a35f92006-04-18 16:45:14 +00001631- The pydoc module now supports documenting packages contained in
1632 .zip or .egg files.
1633
1634- The pkgutil module now has several new utility functions, such
1635 as ``walk_packages()`` to support working with packages that are either
1636 in the filesystem or zip files.
1637
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00001638- The mailbox module can now modify and delete messages from

1640 K. Johnson for writing the code, and to the 2005 Google Summer of
1641 Code for funding his work.
Phillip J. Eby17a35f92006-04-18 16:45:14 +00001642

1699
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00001700- The test_contextlib test in 2.5a1 wasn't actually run unless you ran
1701 it separately and by hand. It also wasn't cleaning up its changes to
1702 the current Decimal context.
1703
Thomas Woutersabd08882006-04-26 15:53:30 +00001704- regrtest.py now has a -M option to run tests that test the new limits of
1705 containers, on 64-bit architectures. Running these tests is only sensible
1706 on 64-bit machines with more than two gigabytes of memory. The argument
1707 passed is the maximum amount of memory for the tests to use.

1735
Nick Coghlan43832302006-04-23 17:04:07 +00001736- PEP 338: -m command line switch now delegates to runpy.run_module
1737 allowing it to support modules in packages and zipfiles
1738
Martin v. Löwisc661b882006-04-20 04:54:23 +00001739- On Windows, .DLL is not an accepted file name extension for
1740 extension modules anymore; extensions are only found if they
1741 end in .PYD.
1742
Martin v. Löwisea62d252006-04-03 10:56:49 +00001743- Bug #1421664: sys.stderr.encoding is now set to the same value as
1744 sys.stdout.encoding.
1745
Neal Norwitz92e212f2006-04-03 04:48:37 +00001746- __import__ accepts keyword arguments.
1747
Georg Brandlccadf842006-03-31 18:54:53 +00001748- Patch #1460496: round() now accepts keyword arguments.
1749
Anthony Baxter262c00a2006-03-30 10:53:17 +00001750- Fixed bug #1459029 - unicode reprs were double-escaped.
1751
Hye-Shik Changd478f342006-03-23 12:32:36 +00001752- Patch #1396919: The system scope threads are reenabled on FreeBSD
1753 5.4 and later versions.
1754
Neal Norwitze98ccf62006-03-23 05:39:47 +00001755- Bug #1115379: Compiling a Unicode string with an encoding declaration
1756 now gives a SyntaxError.
1757
Georg Brandlabd1ff82006-03-18 07:59:59 +00001758- Previously, Python code had no easy way to access the contents of a
1759 cell object. Now, a ``cell_contents`` attribute has been added
1760 (closes patch #1170323).
1761
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001762- Patch #1123430: Python's small-object allocator now returns an arena to
1763 the system ``free()`` when all memory within an arena becomes unused
1764 again. Prior to Python 2.5, arenas (256KB chunks of memory) were never
1765 freed. Some applications will see a drop in virtual memory size now,
1766 especially long-running applications that, from time to time, temporarily
1767 use a large number of small objects. Note that when Python returns an
1768 arena to the platform C's ``free()``, there's no guarantee that the
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00001769 platform C library will in turn return that memory to the operating system.
1770 The effect of the patch is to stop making that impossible, and in tests it
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001771 appears to be effective at least on Microsoft C and gcc-based systems.
1772 Thanks to Evan Jones for hard work and patience.
1773
Georg Brandl533ff6f2006-03-08 18:09:27 +00001774- Patch #1434038: property() now uses the getter's docstring if there is
1775 no "doc" argument given. This makes it possible to legitimately use
1776 property() as a decorator to produce a read-only property.
1777
Guido van Rossum9aa37ab2006-03-07 18:54:08 +00001778- PEP 357, patch 1436368: add an __index__ method to int/long and a matching
1779 nb_index slot to the PyNumberMethods struct. The slot is consulted instead
1780 of requiring an int or long in slicing and a few other contexts, enabling
1781 other objects (e.g. Numeric Python's integers) to be used as slice indices.
1782
Neal Norwitz995acdf2006-03-07 05:01:00 +00001783- Fixed various bugs reported by Coverity's Prevent tool.
1784
Brett Cannonbf364092006-03-01 04:25:17 +00001785- PEP 352, patch #1104669: Make exceptions new-style objects. Introduced the
1786 new exception base class, BaseException, which has a new message attribute.
1787 KeyboardInterrupt and SystemExit to directly inherit from BaseException now.
1788 Raising a string exception now raises a DeprecationWarning.
1789
Thomas Woutersfb609f42006-02-28 16:37:25 +00001790- Patch #1438387, PEP 328: relative and absolute imports. Imports can now be
1791 explicitly relative, using 'from .module import name' to mean 'from the same
1792 package as this module is in. Imports without dots still default to the
1793 old relative-then-absolute, unless 'from __future__ import
1794 absolute_import' is used.
1795
Brett Cannona7446e32006-02-27 23:39:10 +00001796- Properly check if 'warnings' raises an exception (usually when a filter set
1797 to "error" is triggered) when raising a warning for raising string
1798 exceptions.
1799
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001800- CO_GENERATOR_ALLOWED is no longer defined. This behavior is the default.
Neal Norwitz0023a2f2006-02-27 23:24:48 +00001801 The name was removed from Include/code.h.
1802
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001803- PEP 308: conditional expressions were added: (x if cond else y).
Neal Norwitzeb651252006-02-27 16:47:12 +00001804
Guido van Rossum1968ad32006-02-25 22:38:04 +00001805- Patch 1433928:
1806 - The copy module now "copies" function objects (as atomic objects).
1807 - dict.__getitem__ now looks for a __missing__ hook before raising
1808 KeyError.
1809
Tim Peters84ef21c2006-02-28 20:39:06 +00001810- PEP 343: with statement implemented. Needs ``from __future__ import
1811 with_statement``. Use of 'with' as a variable will generate a warning.
1812 Use of 'as' as a variable will also generate a warning (unless it's
Neal Norwitz055ec242006-02-28 20:06:49 +00001813 part of an import statement).
Guido van Rossum1a5e21e2006-02-28 21:57:43 +00001814 The following objects have __context__ methods:
1815 - The built-in file type.
1816 - The thread.LockType type.
1817 - The following types defined by the threading module:
1818 Lock, RLock, Condition, Semaphore, BoundedSemaphore.
1819 - The decimal.Context class.
Guido van Rossumc2e20742006-02-27 22:32:47 +00001820
Marc-André Lemburgfe4b34c2006-02-19 15:22:22 +00001821- Fix the encodings package codec search function to only search
1822 inside its own package. Fixes problem reported in patch #1433198.
1823
1824 Note: Codec packages should implement and register their own
1825 codec search function. PEP 100 has the details.
1826
Tim Peters9ea89d22006-06-04 03:26:02 +00001827- PEP 353: Using ``Py_ssize_t`` as the index type.
1828
1829- ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` builds now add ``4*sizeof(size_t)`` bytes of debugging
1830 info to each allocated block, since the ``Py_ssize_t`` changes (PEP 353)
1831 now allow Python to make use of memory blocks exceeding 2**32 bytes for
1832 some purposes on 64-bit boxes. A ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` build was limited
1833 to 4-byte allocations before.
Martin v. Löwis18e16552006-02-15 17:27:45 +00001834
Neal Norwitzfc76d632006-01-10 06:03:13 +00001835- Patch #1400181, fix unicode string formatting to not use the locale.
1836 This is how string objects work. u'%f' could use , instead of .
1837 for the decimal point. Now both strings and unicode always use periods.
1838
Neal Norwitz671b9e32006-01-09 07:07:12 +00001839- Bug #1244610, #1392915, fix build problem on OpenBSD 3.7 and 3.8.

1841
Georg Brandlcd4d1e82005-12-27 17:37:07 +00001842- Bug #959576: The pwd module is now builtin. This allows Python to be
1843 built on UNIX platforms without $HOME set.
1844
Neal Norwitzc10978f2005-12-19 06:07:16 +00001845- Bug #1072182, fix some potential problems if characters are signed.

1848
Neal Norwitzdb83eb32005-12-18 05:29:30 +00001849- Bug #1378022, UTF-8 files with a leading BOM crashed the interpreter.
1850
Neal Norwitze7214a12005-12-18 05:03:17 +00001851- Support for converting hex strings to floats no longer works.
1852 This was not portable. float('0x3') now raises a ValueError.
1853
Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00001854- Patch #1382163: Expose Subversion revision number to Python. New C API
Barry Warsawd3c38ff2006-03-07 09:46:03 +00001855 function Py_GetBuildNumber(). New attribute sys.subversion. Build number
Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00001856 is now displayed in interactive prompt banner.
1857
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00001858- Implementation of PEP 341 - Unification of try/except and try/finally.
1859 "except" clauses can now be written together with a "finally" clause in
Neal Norwitz11ca77e2005-12-17 22:24:12 +00001860 one try statement instead of two nested ones. Patch #1355913.
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00001861

1869
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00001870- SF Bug #1350188, "setdlopenflags" leads to crash upon "import"
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001871 It was possible for dlerror() to return a NULL pointer, so
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001872 it will now use a default error message in this case.
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00001873
Marc-André Lemburga5bafc42005-10-23 13:43:40 +00001874- Replaced most Unicode charmap codecs with new ones using the
1875 new Unicode translate string feature in the builtin charmap
1876 codec; the codecs were created from the mapping tables available
1877 at ftp.unicode.org and contain a few updates (e.g. the Mac OS
1878 encodings now include a mapping for the Apple logo)
1879
Tim Peterse3547fd2005-12-16 23:13:57 +00001880- Added a few more codecs for Mac OS encodings

1899
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001900- All iterators now have a Boolean value of True. Formerly, some iterators
Raymond Hettinger6b27cda2005-09-24 21:23:05 +00001901 supported a __len__() method which evaluated to False when the iterator
1902 was empty.
1903
Guido van Rossum630db602005-09-20 18:49:54 +00001904- On 64-bit platforms, when __len__() returns a value that cannot be
1905 represented as a C int, raise OverflowError.
1906
Skip Montanarof8948ca2005-09-19 03:54:46 +00001907- test__locale is skipped on OS X < 10.4 (only partial locale support is
Walter Dörwald6611a8b2005-10-09 19:28:35 +00001908 present).
Skip Montanarof8948ca2005-09-19 03:54:46 +00001909
Georg Brandl80bbf3f2005-09-14 19:38:29 +00001910- SF bug #893549: parsing keyword arguments was broken with a few format
1911 codes.
1912
Guido van Rossum8ee3e5a2005-09-14 18:09:42 +00001913- Changes donated by Elemental Security to make it work on AIX 5.3
1914 with IBM's 64-bit compiler (SF patch #1284289). This also closes SF
1915 bug #105470: test_pwd fails on 64bit system (Opteron).
1916
Guido van Rossum539c6622005-09-14 17:49:54 +00001917- Changes donated by Elemental Security to make it work on HP-UX 11 on
1918 Itanium2 with HP's 64-bit compiler (SF patch #1225212).
1919
Georg Brandl4550b8d2005-08-26 06:43:52 +00001920- Disallow keyword arguments for type constructors that don't use them
Georg Brandl02c42872005-08-26 06:42:30 +00001921 (fixes bug #1119418).
1922
Martin v. Löwisd35edda2005-08-24 08:39:24 +00001923- Forward UnicodeDecodeError into SyntaxError for source encoding errors.
1924
Barry Warsawe2eca0b2005-08-15 18:14:19 +00001925- SF bug #900092: When tracing (e.g. for hotshot), restore 'return' events for
1926 exceptions that cause a function to exit.
1927
Raymond Hettinger9f1a6792005-07-31 01:16:36 +00001928- The implementation of set() and frozenset() was revised to use its
1929 own internal data structure. Memory consumption is reduced by 1/3
1930 and there are modest speed-ups as well. The API is unchanged.
1931
Tim Petersde7990b2005-07-17 23:45:23 +00001932- SF bug #1238681: freed pointer is used in longobject.c:long_pow().
1933
Michael W. Hudson0edc7a02005-07-12 10:21:19 +00001934- SF bug #1229429: PyObject_CallMethod failed to decrement some
1935 reference counts in some error exit cases.
1936
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001937- SF bug #1185883: Python's small-object memory allocator took over
1938 a block managed by the platform C library whenever a realloc specified
1939 a small new size. However, there's no portable way to know then how
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001940 much of the address space following the pointer is valid, so there's no
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001941 portable way to copy data from the C-managed block into Python's
1942 small-object space without risking a memory fault. Python's small-object
1943 realloc now leaves such blocks under the control of the platform C
1944 realloc.
1945
Michael W. Hudsonb8963812005-07-05 15:21:58 +00001946- SF bug #1232517: An overflow error was not detected properly when
1947 attempting to convert a large float to an int in os.utime().
1948
Raymond Hettinger3296e692005-06-29 23:29:56 +00001949- SF bug #1224347: hex longs now print with lowercase letters just
1950 like their int counterparts.
1951
Michael W. Hudson188d4362005-06-20 16:52:57 +00001952- SF bug #1163563: the original fix for bug #1010677 ("thread Module
1953 Breaks PyGILState_Ensure()") broke badly in the case of multiple
1954 interpreter states; back out that fix and do a better job (see
1955 http://mail.python.org/pipermail/python-dev/2005-June/054258.html
1956 for a longer write-up of the problem).
1957
Michael W. Hudsondf888462005-06-03 14:41:55 +00001958- SF patch #1180995: marshal now uses a binary format by default when
1959 serializing floats.
1960
Michael W. Hudsonda85a902005-06-01 11:34:22 +00001961- SF patch #1181301: on platforms that appear to use IEEE 754 floats,
1962 the routines that promise to produce IEEE 754 binary representations
1963 of floats now simply copy bytes around.
1964
Skip Montanarobbf12ba2005-05-20 03:07:06 +00001965- bug #967182: disallow opening files with 'wU' or 'aU' as specified by PEP
1966 278.
1967
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001968- patch #1109424: int, long, float, complex, and unicode now check for the
1969 proper magic slot for type conversions when subclassed. Previously the
1970 magic slot was ignored during conversion. Semantics now match the way
1971 subclasses of str always behaved. int/long/float, conversion of an instance
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00001972 to the base class has been moved to the proper nb_* magic slot and out of
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001973 PyNumber_*().
Neal Norwitzcfba5f82006-04-25 05:05:03 +00001974 Thanks Walter Drwald.
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001975
Barry Warsawc8d907c2005-04-19 23:43:40 +00001976- Descriptors defined in C with a PyGetSetDef structure, where the setter is
1977 NULL, now raise an AttributeError when attempting to set or delete the
1978 attribute. Previously a TypeError was raised, but this was inconsistent
1979 with the equivalent pure-Python implementation.
1980
Michael W. Hudson774479c2005-04-18 08:46:17 +00001981- It is now safe to call PyGILState_Release() before
1982 PyEval_InitThreads() (note that if there is reason to believe there
1983 are multiple threads around you still must call PyEval_InitThreads()
1984 before using the Python API; this fix is for extension modules that
1985 have no way of knowing if Python is multi-threaded yet).
1986
Michael W. Hudsone3afc592005-04-07 10:11:19 +00001987- Typing Ctrl-C whilst raw_input() was waiting in a build with threads
1988 disabled caused a crash.
1989
Michael W. Hudsonb330adf2005-03-31 09:35:44 +00001990- Bug #1165306: instancemethod_new allowed the creation of a method
1991 with im_class == im_self == NULL, which caused a crash when called.
1992
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001993- Move exception finalisation later in the shutdown process - this
Anthony Baxter12b6f6c2005-03-29 13:36:16 +00001994 fixes the crash seen in bug #1165761
1995
Raymond Hettinger96229b12005-03-11 06:49:40 +00001996- Added two new builtins, any() and all().
1997
Brett Cannon409d8f22005-03-05 06:47:57 +00001998- Defining a class with empty parentheses is now allowed
Brett Cannonf4189912005-04-09 02:30:16 +00001999 (e.g., ``class C(): pass`` is no longer a syntax error).
2000 Patch #1176012 added support to the 'parser' module and 'compiler' package
2001 (thanks to logistix for that added support).
Brett Cannon409d8f22005-03-05 06:47:57 +00002002
Martin v. Löwis96d743e2005-03-03 23:00:26 +00002003- Patch #1115086: Support PY_LONGLONG in structmember.
2004
Raymond Hettingerb67cc802005-03-03 16:45:19 +00002005- Bug #1155938: new style classes did not check that __init__() was
2006 returning None.
2007
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002008- Patch #802188: Report characters after line continuation character

2010
Martin v. Löwisff232d72005-03-03 09:24:38 +00002011- Bug #723201: Raise a TypeError for passing bad objects to 'L' format.
2012
Michael W. Hudson8e1afab2005-02-17 14:55:21 +00002013- Bug #1124295: the __name__ attribute of file objects was
2014 inadvertently made inaccessible in restricted mode.
2015
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002016- Bug #1074011: closing sys.std{out,err} now causes a flush() and
Martin v. Löwis8e3ca8a2005-01-23 09:41:49 +00002017 an ferror() call.
2018
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00002019- min() and max() now support key= arguments with the same meaning as in
2020 list.sort().
2021
Raymond Hettingerc34f8672005-01-02 06:17:33 +00002022- The peephole optimizer now performs simple constant folding in expressions:
2023 (2+3) --> (5).
2024
Raymond Hettingera422c342005-01-11 03:03:27 +00002025- set and frozenset objects can now be marshalled. SF #1098985.
2026
Michael W. Hudsonfaa76482005-01-31 17:09:25 +00002027- Bug #1077106: Poor argument checking could cause memory corruption
2028 in calls to os.read().
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002029
Jeremy Hyltonab630502005-02-04 18:44:06 +00002030- The parser did not complain about future statements in illegal
2031 positions. It once again reports a syntax error if a future
2032 statement occurs after anything other than a doc string.
2033
Neil Schemenauercf52c072005-08-12 17:34:58 +00002034- Change the %s format specifier for str objects so that it returns a
2035 unicode instance if the argument is not an instance of basestring and
2036 calling __str__ on the argument returns a unicode instance.
2037
Tim Petersf4e69282006-02-27 17:15:31 +00002038- Patch #1413181: changed ``PyThreadState_Delete()`` to forget about the
2039 current thread state when the auto-GIL-state machinery knows about
2040 it (since the thread state is being deleted, continuing to remember it
2041 can't help, but can hurt if another thread happens to get created with

2282 package that was included in Python 2.3, except that PEP 8 module names are
2283 now used (e.g. mail.message instead of email.Message). The MIME classes
2284 have been moved to a subpackage (e.g. email.mime.text instead of
2285 email.MIMEText). The old names are still supported for now. Several

Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002567 + Dialect parameter parsing has been re-implemented to improve error
2568 reporting.
2569 + quotechar=None and quoting=QUOTE_NONE now work the way PEP 305
2570 dictates.
2571 + the parser now removes the escapechar prefix from escaped characters.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002572 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the writer now tests for numeric
Andrew M. Kuchling6db67822006-04-18 14:04:57 +00002573 types, rather than any object that can be represented as a numeric.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002574 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the reader now casts unquoted fields
2575 to floats.
Andrew McNamaraf69d94f2005-01-13 11:30:54 +00002576 + reader now allows \r characters to be quoted (previously it only allowed
2577 \n to be quoted).
Andrew McNamarac89f2842005-01-12 07:44:42 +00002578 + writer doublequote handling improved.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002579 + Dialect classes passed to the module are no longer instantiated by
2580 the module before being parsed (the former validation scheme required
2581 this, but the mechanism was unreliable).
2582 + The dialect registry now contains instances of the internal
2583 C-coded dialect type, rather than references to python objects.
2584 + the internal c-coded dialect type is now immutable.
2585 + register_dialect now accepts the same keyword dialect specifications
2586 as the reader and writer, allowing the user to register dialects
2587 without first creating a dialect class.
2588 + a configurable limit to the size of parsed fields has been added -
2589 previously, an unmatched quote character could result in the entire
2590 file being read into the field buffer before an error was reported.
Andrew McNamara31d88962005-01-12 03:45:10 +00002591 + A new module method csv.field_size_limit() has been added that sets
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002592 the parser field size limit (returning the former limit). The initial
2593 limit is 128kB.
Andrew McNamara7f2053e2005-01-12 11:17:16 +00002594 + A line_num attribute has been added to the reader object, which tracks
2595 the number of lines read from the source iterator. This is not
2596 the same as the number of records returned, as records can span
2597 multiple lines.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002598 + reader and writer objects were not being registered with the cyclic-GC.
2599 This has been fixed.
2600
Brett Cannone6539c42005-01-08 02:43:53 +00002601- _DummyThread objects in the threading module now delete self.__block that is
2602 inherited from _Thread since it uses up a lock allocated by 'thread'. The
2603 lock primitives tend to be limited in number and thus should not be wasted on
2604 a _DummyThread object. Fixes bug #1089632.
2605
Raymond Hettinger97db05d2005-01-07 08:15:41 +00002606- The imghdr module now detects Exif files.
2607

2609 (Bug #951915).
2610
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00002611- locale.py now uses an updated locale alias table (built using
2612 Tools/i18n/makelocalealias.py, a tool to parse the X11 locale
2613 alias file); the encoding lookup was enhanced to use Python's
Andrew M. Kuchling88b85822005-08-23 00:57:07 +00002614 encoding alias table.

2630
Raymond Hettinger664347b2004-12-04 21:21:53 +00002631- unittest.TestCase.run() and unittest.TestSuite.run() can now be successfully
2632 extended or overridden by subclasses. Formerly, the subclassed method would
2633 be ignored by the rest of the module. (Bug #1078905).
2634
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002635- heapq.nsmallest() and heapq.nlargest() now support key= arguments with
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00002636 the same meaning as in list.sort().
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002637
Walter Dörwald36733692004-12-22 12:50:50 +00002638- Bug #1076985: ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` now calls ``read()`` only

2640 tokenizer with very long source lines.
2641
Barry Warsaw538561e2006-01-01 21:48:54 +00002642- Bug #1083110: ``zlib.decompress.flush()`` would segfault if called

2651
Greg Ward40407942005-03-05 02:53:17 +00002652- Bug #1149508: ``textwrap`` now handles hyphenated numbers (eg. "2004-03-05")
2653 correctly.
2654
Walter Dörwaldbc8e6422005-04-21 21:32:03 +00002655- Partial fixes for SF bugs #1163244 and #1175396: If a chunk read by
2656 ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` has a trailing "\r", read one more
2657 character even if the user has passed a size parameter to get a proper
2658 line ending. Remove the special handling of a "\r\n" that has been split
2659 between two lines.
2660
Walter Dörwalda47d1c02005-08-30 10:23:14 +00002661- Bug #1251300: On UCS-4 builds the "unicode-internal" codec will now complain
2662 about illegal code points. The codec now supports PEP 293 style error
2663 handlers.
2664
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00002665- Bug #1235646: ``codecs.StreamRecoder.next()`` now reencodes the data it reads
Walter Dörwaldc5238b82005-09-01 11:56:53 +00002666 from the input stream, so that the output is a byte string in the correct
2667 encoding instead of a unicode string.

2670 considering it exactly like a '*'.
2671
Walter Dörwald007f8df2005-10-09 19:42:27 +00002672- Bug #1245379: Add "unicode-1-1-utf-7" as an alias for "utf-7" to

Gustavo Niemeyer6fa0c5a2005-09-14 08:54:39 +00002674
Walter Dörwald09f0dd52005-11-21 19:10:07 +00002675- ` uu.encode()`` and ``uu.decode()`` now support unicode filenames.
2676
Gustavo Niemeyer548148812006-01-31 18:34:13 +00002677- Patch #1413711: Certain patterns of differences were making difflib
2678 touch the recursion limit.
2679
Walter Dörwald58917a62006-03-31 15:26:22 +00002680- Bug #947906: An object oriented interface has been added to the calendar
2681 module. It's possible to generate HTML calendar now and the module can be
Walter Dörwald48d5e502006-04-01 07:57:00 +00002682 called as a script (e.g. via ``python -mcalendar``). Localized month and
2683 weekday names can be ouput (even if an exotic encoding is used) using
2684 special classes that use unicode.

Brett Cannon46d96232005-02-16 00:07:19 +00002722- spwdmodule.c is built only if either HAVE_GETSPNAM or HAVE_HAVE_GETSPENT is

2724
Brett Cannon516592f2004-12-07 00:42:59 +00002725- setup.py now uses the directories specified in LDFLAGS using the -L option
2726 and in CPPFLAGS using the -I option for adding library and include
2727 directories, respectively, for compiling extension modules against. This has
2728 led to the core being compiled using the values in CPPFLAGS. It also removes
2729 the need for the special-casing of both DarwinPorts and Fink for darwin since
2730 the proper directories can be specified in LDFLAGS (``-L/sw/lib`` for Fink,
2731 ``-L/opt/local/lib`` for DarwinPorts) and CPPFLAGS (``-I/sw/include`` for
2732 Fink, ``-I/opt/local/include`` for DarwinPorts).
2733
Brett Cannon43802422005-02-10 20:48:03 +00002734- Test in configure.in that checks for tzset no longer dependent on tm->tm_zone
2735 to exist in the struct (not required by either ISO C nor the UNIX 2 spec).
2736 Tests for sanity in tzname when HAVE_TZNAME defined were also defined.

2740-----
2741
Tim Petersc9d78aa2006-03-26 23:27:58 +00002742- ``PyMem_{Del, DEL}`` and ``PyMem_{Free, FREE}`` no longer map to
2743 ``PyObject_{Free, FREE}``. They map to the system ``free()`` now. If memory
2744 is obtained via the ``PyObject_`` family, it must be released via the
2745 ``PyObject_`` family, and likewise for the ``PyMem_`` family. This has
2746 always been officially true, but when Python's small-object allocator was
2747 introduced, an attempt was made to cater to a few extension modules
2748 discovered at the time that obtained memory via ``PyObject_New`` but
2749 released it via ``PyMem_DEL``. It's years later, and if such code still
2750 exists it will fail now (probably with segfaults, but calling wrong
2751 low-level memory management functions can yield many symptoms).
2752
Raymond Hettingerbeb31012005-08-16 03:47:52 +00002753- Added a C API for set and frozenset objects.
