13-----------------
14
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +000015- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
16 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
17
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +000018- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
19 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
20 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
21
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +000022- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
23 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
24 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
25 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
26 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
27 failed have been fixed.

31
Raymond Hettinger8c664e82008-07-25 18:43:33 +000032- Issue 1592: Improve error reporting when operations are attempted
33 on a closed shelf.
34
Georg Brandlf9efabb2008-07-23 15:16:45 +000035- Deprecate the "ast" parser function aliases.
36
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +000037- Issue #3120: On 64-bit Windows the subprocess module was truncating handles.
38
39- Issue #3303: Fix a crash in locale.strcoll() when calling it with
40 invalid arguments.
41
42- Issue #3302: Fix several crashes when calling locale's gettext functions
43 with None arguments.
44
45- Issue #3389: Allow resolving dotted names for handlers in logging
46 configuration files.
47
48- Deprecate the sunaudio module for removal in Python 3.0.
49
Antoine Pitrou5fdfa3e2008-07-25 19:42:26 +000050- Issue #3394: zipfile.writestr sets external attributes when passed a
51 file name rather than a ZipInfo instance, so files are extracted with
52 mode 0600 rather than 000 under Unix.

59
Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +000060Core and Builtins
61-----------------
62
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +000063- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
64 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
65 an integer using operator.index().
66
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +000067- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
68 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
69
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +000070- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
71 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
72
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +000073- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
74 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
75 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
76
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +000077- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
78 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
79 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
80 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
81 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
82 level.
83
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +000084- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
85 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
86 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
87 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
88 all imports from that module to fail.
89
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +000090- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
91 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
92 new-style classes.
93
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +000094- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
95 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
96 another file in sys.stdout.
97
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +000098- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
99 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
100 another thread's dictionary.
101
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000102- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
103 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
104 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
105 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
106 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
107 10, -1).
108
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000109- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
110 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
111 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000112
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000113- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
114 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into
115 ClearFreeList apis and calls them via gc.collect().
Gregory P. Smith2fe77062008-07-06 03:35:58 +0000116

125
Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +0000126- Issue #3125: Remove copy_reg in multiprocessing and replace it with
127 ForkingPickler.register() to resolve conflict with ctypes.

132 a valid dlerror() message.
133
Thomas Heller2bad6572008-07-15 17:19:50 +0000134- Issue #3258: Fixed a crash when a ctypes POINTER type to an
135 incomplete structure was created.
136

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000143- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
144 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000145 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000146 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
147 merged into trunk.
148
Georg Brandle78fbcc2008-07-05 10:13:36 +0000149- Issue #2663: add filtering capability to shutil.copytree().

163 handling is now the same as that of other special attributes like __name__).
164
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000165- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for
166 removal in Python 3.0 in favor of urllib2.urlopen().

Gregory P. Smith3b1e6b22008-07-07 04:31:58 +0000172 properly when raising an exception due to the bz2file being closed.
173 Prevents a deadlock.
174
Gregory P. Smithc4691ec2008-07-07 05:09:12 +0000175- Issue #3094: httplib.HTTPSConnection Host: headers no longer include the
176 redundant ":443" port number designation when the connection is using the
177 default https port (443).
178

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000614- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
615 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
616 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
617 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
618 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
619 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
620 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support
621 for the ``line`` argument will raise a DeprecationWarning.

Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000683
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000684- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
685 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
686 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
687 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
688 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
689 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
690 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
691 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
692 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
693 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
694 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
695 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
696 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
697 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
698 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
699 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
700 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
701 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
702 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
703 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
704
705 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
706 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
707 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
708 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
709 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
710 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
711 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
712 access to the underlying socket used.
713
714 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
715 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
716 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000717
718 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000719 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000720 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
721 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
722
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000723 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
724 suite to run in parallel without issue.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc9a0d3462008-03-23 09:55:29 +0000778- Issue #1477: With narrow Unicode builds, the unicode escape sequence
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000779 \Uxxxxxxxx did not accept values outside the Basic Multilingual

Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001000- Issue #1881: An internal parser limit has been increased. Also see
Facundo Batistafc2d0102008-02-23 12:01:13 +00001001 issue 215555 for a discussion.
1002
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001003- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1004 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1005 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1006 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1007 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1008 module is:
1009 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1010
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001011- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1012 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1013 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1014 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1015 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1016 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1017
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001018- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1019 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1020 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1021 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1022 PyObject_Format().
1023
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001024- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1025 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1026 state.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +00001027
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001028- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001029 prevent a possible crash: an Abstract Base Class would try to access

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001035- Clear all free lists during a gc.collect() of the highest generation
1036 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
1037 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001038
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001039- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a
1040 subclass of collections.defaultdict, if its default_factory is set
1041 to a bound method.

1054 calls. Python expected the return type int but the fork familie
1055 returns pi_t.
Christian Heimes951cc0f2008-01-31 23:08:23 +00001056
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001057- Issue #1678380: Fix a bug that identifies 0j and -0j when they

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00002343 time so that opening a database previously created with the DB_DUP
2344 or DB_DUPSORT flag set will keep the proper behavior on subsequent
2345 opens. Specifically: dictionary assignment to a DB object will
2346 replace all values for a given key when the database allows
2347 duplicate values. DB users should use DB.put(k, v) when they want
2348 to store duplicates; not DB[k] = v.
