36 code has been kept as backup). This will allow for using the 'warning's
37 machinery in such places as the parser where use of pure Python code is not
38 possible.
39
Barry Warsawba437742008-04-04 01:34:41 +000040Library
41-------
42
Gregory P. Smithd59fefb2008-04-22 08:11:33 +000043- The getpass module has been improved on Unix. It now uses /dev/tty
44 by default and uses stderr instead of stdout. A GetPassWarning is
45 issued when input echo cannot be controlled.
Gregory P. Smith41e30182008-04-21 21:31:08 +000046
Skip Montanarob131f042008-04-18 20:35:46 +000047- Issue #2014: Allow XML-RPC datetime objects to have dates before
48 1900-01-01.
49
Nick Coghlan106fc482008-04-15 10:25:31 +000050- Issue #2439: Added new function pkgutil.get_data(), which is a
51 convenience wrapper for the PEP 302 get_data() API.

57 detail of the public ``types`` module, has been removed and replaced by pure
58 python code.
59
Mark Hammond495cf992008-04-07 01:53:39 +000060- Issue #2513: distutils on Windows is now capable of cross-compiling
61 extension modules between 32 and 64 bit platforms. See the distutls
62 build documentation for more information.
63
Gregory P. Smithaa63d0d2008-04-06 23:11:17 +000064- Issue #815646: Individual file objects may now be used from multiple
65 threads at once without fear of crashing the Python interpreter. If
66 file.close() is called while an object is in use by another thread
67 an IOError exception will be raised and the file will not be closed.
68
Thomas Hellerf7906482008-04-04 19:43:25 +000069- The bundled libffi copy is now in sync with the recently released
70 libffi3.0.5 version, apart from some small changes to
71 Modules/_ctypes/libffi/configure.ac.
72
Fred Drake46c58c12008-04-04 05:41:30 +000073- Issue #2385: distutils.core.run_script() makes __file__ available, so the
74 controlled environment will more closely mirror the typical script
75 environment. This supports setup.py scripts that refer to data files.
76
Barry Warsawba437742008-04-04 01:34:41 +000077Tests
78-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +000079- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining ports
80 to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an effort to
81 facilitate running multiple instances of the entire regression test suite
82 in parallel without issue. test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such
83 that it will always return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case
84 with the previous implementation, especially if socket options had been
85 set that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
86 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception if it
87 is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the SO_REUSEADDR or
88 SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if available, bind_port()
89 will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on the socket it's been passed.
90 This currently only applies to Windows. This option prevents any other
91 sockets from binding to the host/port we've bound to, thus removing the
92 possibility of the 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it,
93 that occurs when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a
94 host/port that's already been bound by another socket. The optional
95 preferred port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
96 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
97
98 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will pass
99 a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an unused port.
100 The temporary socket object is then closed and deleted, and the port is
101 returned. This method should only be used for obtaining an unused port
102 in order to pass to an external program (i.e. the -accept [port] argument
103 to openssl's s_server mode) or as a parameter to a server-oriented class
104 that doesn't give you direct access to the underlying socket used.
105
106 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used for
107 the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and connect).
108
109 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
110 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
111 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
112 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
113
114 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test suite to
115 run in parallel without issue.

117Build
118-----
119
Thomas Hellerdc96a772008-04-04 10:07:55 +0000120- Issue #2544: On HP-UX systems, use 'gcc -shared' for linking when
121 gcc is used as compiler.
122
Barry Warsawba437742008-04-04 01:34:41 +0000123C API
124-----
125
Christian Heimes6f341092008-04-18 23:13:07 +0000126- Added implementation of copysign, acosh, asinh, atanh and log1p
127 to the new files Include/pymath.h and Python/pymath.h for
128 platforms which provide the functions through their libm. The
129 files also contains several helpers and constants for math.

Barry Warsaw52973612008-03-01 02:23:38 +0000362 644. The mode is now inherited from the py file.
Christian Heimes40346852008-02-23 17:52:07 +0000363
Georg Brandlad61bc82008-02-23 15:11:18 +0000364- Issue #2067: file.__exit__() now calls subclasses' close() method.
365
366- Patch #1759: Backport of PEP 3129 class decorators.
Christian Heimes5224d282008-02-23 15:01:05 +0000367

370
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +0000371- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
372 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
373 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
374 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
375 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
376 module is:
377 from future_builtins import hex, oct
378
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +0000379- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
380 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
381 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
382 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
383 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
384 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
385
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +0000386- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
387 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
388 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
389 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
390 PyObject_Format().
391

401
Andrew M. Kuchlingc6511a82008-03-04 01:48:26 +0000402- Clear all free lists during a gc.collect() of the highest generation in order
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +0000403 to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back memory to the
404 OS earlier.

408
Christian Heimesf75dbef2008-02-08 00:11:31 +0000409- Fixed a minor memory leak in dictobject.c. The content of the free
410 list was not freed on interpreter shutdown.
411
Christian Heimes6075a822008-02-06 12:44:34 +0000412- Limit free list of method and builtin function objects to 256 entries

435 same object as the func_code attribute of the function that produced the
436 generator.
437
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc31eaafe2008-01-24 22:59:25 +0000438- Issue #1920: "while 0" statements were completely removed by the compiler,
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000439 even in the presence of an "else" clause, which is supposed to be run when
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc31eaafe2008-01-24 22:59:25 +0000440 the condition is false. Now the compiler correctly emits bytecode for the

564 PyObject_Call() never calling back out to Python code to trigger recursion
565 depth updates/checks. Required the creation of a static RuntimeError
566 instance in case normalizing an exception put the recursion check value past
567 its limit. Fixes crashers infinite_rec_(1|2|4|5).py.

Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +0000614- Bug #1683368: The object.__init__() and object.__new__() methods are
615 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when
616 either allows excess arguments is when it is not overridden and the

618 overridden, it is a deprecation warning (for now; maybe a Py3k
Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +0000619 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
620 as supported by type.__new__().
