Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +00007What's New in Python 2.6 beta 2?
8================================
9
10Core and Builtins
11-----------------
12
Raymond Hettinger3cd1e422008-07-10 14:03:19 +000013
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +000014- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
15 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
16 new-style classes.
17
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +000018- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
19 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
20 another file in sys.stdout.
21
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +000022- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
23 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
24 another thread's dictionary.
25
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +000026- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
27 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
28 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
29 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
30 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
31 10, -1).
32
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +000033- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments, f(a=2, a=23),
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +000034 would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression from 2.4 caused by the
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +000035 switch to the new compiler.
36
Gregory P. Smith2fe77062008-07-06 03:35:58 +000037- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with other
38 freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into ClearFreeList apis and
39 calls them via gc.collect().
40

45
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +000046- Issue #3301: Bisect module behaved badly when lo was negative.
Raymond Hettinger3cd1e422008-07-10 14:03:19 +000047
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +000048- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
49 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +000050 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +000051 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
52 merged into trunk.
53
Georg Brandle78fbcc2008-07-05 10:13:36 +000054- Issue #2663: add filtering capability to shutil.copytree().
55
Martin v. Löwis8c436412008-07-03 12:51:14 +000056- Issue #1622: Correct interpretation of various ZIP header fields.
57
58- Issue #1526: Allow more than 64k files to be added to Zip64 file.
59
60- Issue #1746: Correct handling of zipfile archive comments (previously
61 archives with comments over 4k were flagged as invalid). Allow writing
62 Zip files with archives by setting the 'comment' attribute of a ZipFile.
63
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +000064- Issue #449227: The rlcompleter module now adds "(" to callable objects
65 when completed.

Nick Coghlanc060b0e2008-07-02 13:09:19 +000067- Issue #3190: Pydoc now hides the automatic module attribute __package__ (the
68 handling is now the same as that of other special attributes like __name__).
69
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +000070- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for
71 removal in Python 3.0 in favor of urllib2.urlopen().
72
Gregory P. Smithf4140642008-07-06 07:16:40 +000073- Issue #2113: Fix error in subprocess.Popen if the select system call is
74 interrupted by a signal.
75

81 redundant ":443" port number designation when the connection is using the
82 default https port (443).
83
Martin v. Löwisd84fd952008-06-30 06:57:39 +000084Build
85-----

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000493- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
494 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
495 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
496 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
497 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
498 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
499 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000563- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
564 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
565 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
566 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
567 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
568 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
569 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
570 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
571 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
572 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
573 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
574 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
575 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
576 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
577 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
578 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
579 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
580 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
581 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
582 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!

584 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
585 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
586 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
587 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
588 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
589 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
590 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
591 access to the underlying socket used.
592
593 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
594 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
595 connect).

Georg Brandlad61bc82008-02-23 15:11:18 +0000875- Issue #2067: file.__exit__() now calls subclasses' close() method.
876
877- Patch #1759: Backport of PEP 3129 class decorators.
Christian Heimes5224d282008-02-23 15:01:05 +0000878
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000879- Issue #1881: An internal parser limit has been increased. Also see
Facundo Batistafc2d0102008-02-23 12:01:13 +0000880 issue 215555 for a discussion.
881
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +0000882- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
883 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
884 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
885 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
886 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
887 module is:
888 from future_builtins import hex, oct
889
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +0000890- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
891 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
892 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
893 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
894 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
895 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
896
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +0000897- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
898 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
899 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
900 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
901 PyObject_Format().
902
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000903- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
904 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
905 state.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +0000906
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000907- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also

2568 to ``PyTuple_SetItem``, it can be used to populate a brand new
2569 frozenset; but it does not steal a reference to the added item.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00002582- Issue #1521: On 64bit platforms, using PyArgs_ParseTuple with the t#
2583 of w# format code incorrectly truncated the length to an int, even
2584 when PY_SSIZE_T_CLEAN is set. The str.decode method used to return
2585 incorrect results with huge strings.
Georg Brandl6caad7d2008-01-26 14:19:22 +00002586

2605- Fix some leftovers from the conversion from int to Py_ssize_t
2606 (relevant to strings and sequences of more than 2**31 items).
2607
2608- Make _PyGILState_NoteThreadState() static, it was not used anywhere
2609 outside of pystate.c and should not be necessary.
