8================================
9
10Core and Builtins
11-----------------
12
Raymond Hettinger3cd1e422008-07-10 14:03:19 +000013
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +000014- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
15 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
16 new-style classes.
17
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +000018- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
19 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
20 another file in sys.stdout.
21
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +000022- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
23 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
24 another thread's dictionary.
25
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +000026- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
27 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
28 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
29 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
30 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
31 10, -1).
32
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +000033- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments, f(a=2, a=23),
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +000034 would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression from 2.4 caused by the
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +000035 switch to the new compiler.
36
Gregory P. Smith2fe77062008-07-06 03:35:58 +000037- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with other
38 freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into ClearFreeList apis and
39 calls them via gc.collect().

45
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +000046- Issue #3301: Bisect module behaved badly when lo was negative.
Raymond Hettinger3cd1e422008-07-10 14:03:19 +000047
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +000048- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
49 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +000050 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +000051 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
52 merged into trunk.
53
Georg Brandle78fbcc2008-07-05 10:13:36 +000054- Issue #2663: add filtering capability to shutil.copytree().
55
Martin v. Löwis8c436412008-07-03 12:51:14 +000056- Issue #1622: Correct interpretation of various ZIP header fields.
57
58- Issue #1526: Allow more than 64k files to be added to Zip64 file.
59
60- Issue #1746: Correct handling of zipfile archive comments (previously
61 archives with comments over 4k were flagged as invalid). Allow writing
62 Zip files with archives by setting the 'comment' attribute of a ZipFile.
63
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +000064- Issue #449227: The rlcompleter module now adds "(" to callable objects
65 when completed.

Nick Coghlanc060b0e2008-07-02 13:09:19 +000067- Issue #3190: Pydoc now hides the automatic module attribute __package__ (the
68 handling is now the same as that of other special attributes like __name__).
69
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +000070- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for
71 removal in Python 3.0 in favor of urllib2.urlopen().
72
Gregory P. Smithf4140642008-07-06 07:16:40 +000073- Issue #2113: Fix error in subprocess.Popen if the select system call is
74 interrupted by a signal.
75
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +000076- Issue #3309: Fix bz2.BZFile iterator to release its internal lock
Gregory P. Smith3b1e6b22008-07-07 04:31:58 +000077 properly when raising an exception due to the bz2file being closed.
78 Prevents a deadlock.

81 redundant ":443" port number designation when the connection is using the
82 default https port (443).
83
Martin v. Löwisd84fd952008-06-30 06:57:39 +000084Build

130 equals ``gen.gi_code.co_name``, like ``func.__name___`` that equals
131 ``func.func_code.co_name``. The repr() of a generator now also

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000503- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
504 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
505 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
506 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
507 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
508 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
509 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000573- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
574 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
575 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
576 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
577 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
578 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
579 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
580 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
581 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
582 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
583 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
584 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
585 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
586 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
587 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
588 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
589 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
590 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
591 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
592 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
593
594 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
595 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
596 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
597 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
598 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
599 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
600 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
601 access to the underlying socket used.
602
603 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
604 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
605 connect).

Georg Brandlad61bc82008-02-23 15:11:18 +0000885- Issue #2067: file.__exit__() now calls subclasses' close() method.
886
887- Patch #1759: Backport of PEP 3129 class decorators.
Christian Heimes5224d282008-02-23 15:01:05 +0000888
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000889- Issue #1881: An internal parser limit has been increased. Also see
Facundo Batistafc2d0102008-02-23 12:01:13 +0000890 issue 215555 for a discussion.
891
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +0000892- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
893 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
894 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
895 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
896 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
897 module is:
898 from future_builtins import hex, oct
899
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +0000900- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
901 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
902 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
903 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
904 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
905 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
906
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +0000907- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
908 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
909 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
910 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
911 PyObject_Format().
912
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000913- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
914 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
915 state.

926 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +0000927
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000928- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a

2570-----
2571
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00002572- Unified naming convention for free lists and their limits. All free
2573 lists in Object/ are named ``free_list``, the counter ``numfree``
2574 and the upper limit is a macro ``PyName_MAXFREELIST`` inside an
2575 #ifndef block.
Christian Heimes5b970ad2008-02-06 13:33:44 +00002576
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00002577- ``PySet_Add()`` can now modify a newly created frozenset. Similarly
2578 to ``PyTuple_SetItem``, it can be used to populate a brand new
2579 frozenset; but it does not steal a reference to the added item.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arccab3d982008-02-03 22:51:43 +00002580
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00002581- Added ``PySet_Check()`` and ``PyFrozenSet_Check()`` to the set API.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arccab3d982008-02-03 22:51:43 +00002582
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00002583- Backport of PyUnicode_FromString(), _FromStringAndSize(), _Format
2584 and _FormatV from Python 3.0. Made PyLong_AsSsize_t and
2585 PyLong_FromSsize_t public functions.
Georg Brandl6caad7d2008-01-26 14:19:22 +00002586
2587- Patch #1720595: add T_BOOL to the range of structmember types.
2588
2589- Issue #1534: Added ``PyFloat_GetMax()``, ``PyFloat_GetMin()`` and
2590 ``PyFloat_GetInfo()`` to the float API.
2591
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00002592- Issue #1521: On 64bit platforms, using PyArgs_ParseTuple with the t#
2593 of w# format code incorrectly truncated the length to an int, even
2594 when PY_SSIZE_T_CLEAN is set. The str.decode method used to return
2595 incorrect results with huge strings.
Georg Brandl6caad7d2008-01-26 14:19:22 +00002596
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00002597- Issue #1629: Renamed Py_Size, Py_Type and Py_Refcnt to Py_SIZE,
2598 Py_TYPE and Py_REFCNT.
Georg Brandl6caad7d2008-01-26 14:19:22 +00002599
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00002600- PEP 3123: Provide forward compatibility with Python 3.0, while
2601 keeping backwards compatibility. Add Py_Refcnt, Py_Type, Py_Size,
2602 and PyVarObject_HEAD_INIT.
Georg Brandl6caad7d2008-01-26 14:19:22 +00002603
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00002604- Py_ssize_t fields work in structmember when HAVE_LONG_LONG is not
2605 defined.
Georg Brandl6caad7d2008-01-26 14:19:22 +00002606
2607- Patch #1733960: Allow T_LONGLONG to accept ints.
2608
2609- T_PYSSIZET can now be used in PyMemberDef lists for Py_ssize_t members.
2610
Christian Heimes000a0742008-01-03 22:16:32 +00002611- Added a new API function ``PyImport_ImportModuleNoBlock``.
2612
Georg Brandl6caad7d2008-01-26 14:19:22 +00002613- Bug #1637022: Prefix AST symbols with _Py_.
2614
2615- Fix some leftovers from the conversion from int to Py_ssize_t
2616 (relevant to strings and sequences of more than 2**31 items).
2617
2618- Make _PyGILState_NoteThreadState() static, it was not used anywhere
2619 outside of pystate.c and should not be necessary.
2620
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00002621- ``PyImport_Import`` and ``PyImport_ImportModule`` now always do
2622 absolute imports. In earlier versions they might have used relative
2623 imports under some conditions.
Christian Heimes000a0742008-01-03 22:16:32 +00002624
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00002625- Added case insensitive comparison methods ``PyOS_stricmp(char*,
2626 char*)`` and ``PyOS_strnicmp(char*, char*, Py_ssize_t)``.
Christian Heimes000a0742008-01-03 22:16:32 +00002627
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00002628- Bug #1542693: remove semi-colon at end of PyImport_ImportModuleEx

2636 requires Windows 2000 or greater. The _WINVER and NTDDI_VERSION
2637 macros are set to Win2k for x86/32bit builds and WinXP for AMD64
2638 builds.
Christian Heimes95d64472008-02-09 19:55:22 +00002639

2652
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00002653- Removed the macfs module. It had been deprecated since Python 2.5.
2654 This lead to the deprecation of macostools.touched() as it relied
2655 solely on macfs and was a no-op under OS X.
