8=============================================
9
10*Release date: XX-XXX-2008*
11
12Core and Builtins
13-----------------
14
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +000015- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with
16 a unicode argument.
17
Benjamin Peterson17f03ca2008-09-01 14:18:30 +000018- Issue #3683: Fix compilation when --without-threads is given.
19
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +000020- Issue #3668: Fix a memory leak with the "s*" argument parser in
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +000021 PyArg_ParseTuple and friends, which occurred when the argument for "s*"
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +000022 was correctly parsed but parsing of subsequent arguments failed.
23
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +000024- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +000025 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
26 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
27 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
28 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
29 type object.
30

43 function 'stringlib_contains_obj'.
44
Benjamin Peterson712ee922008-08-24 18:10:20 +000045- Added warnings on the use of ``__getslice__``, ``__setslice__``, or
46 ``__delslice__``.
47
Gregory P. Smith2bb25cc2008-09-02 05:29:51 +000048- Issue #3678: Correctly pass LDFLAGS and LDLAST to the linker on shared
49 library targets in the Makefile.
50
Gregory P. Smith980b99b2008-09-07 05:15:18 +000051- Issue #1204: The configure script now tests for additional libraries
52 that may be required when linking against readline. This fixes issues
53 with x86_64 builds on some platforms (a few Linux flavors and OpenBSD).
54
Benjamin Peterson14cb6bc2008-08-26 17:08:40 +000055C-API
56-----
57

Brett Cannon32476fc2008-09-05 18:33:51 +000068
Hirokazu Yamamoto42e459e2008-09-04 14:25:30 +000069- Issue #3762: platform.architecture() fails if python is lanched via
70 its symbolic link.
71

87 warnings.catch_warnings() along with some API cleanup. Expanding the tests
88 for catch_warnings() also led to an improvement in the raising of a
89 DeprecationWarning related to warnings.warn_explicit().
90
Benjamin Peterson973e6c22008-09-01 23:12:58 +000091- The deprecation warnings for the old camelCase threading API were removed.

134
Barry Warsaw07a4a382008-08-21 01:15:08 +0000135*Release date: 20-Aug-2008*
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000136
137Core and Builtins
138-----------------
139
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000140- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
141 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
142 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
143 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
144 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
145 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
146 default.
147
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000148- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
149 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
150
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000151- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
152 value again.
153
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000154- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
155 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
156 and introducing s*.
157
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000158- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
159 object was stored in the freelist.
160
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000161- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
162 ValueError consistently across platforms.
163
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000164- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
165 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
166 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
167
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000168- Apply security patches from Apple.
169
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000170- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
171 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
172
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000173- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
174 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
175
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000176- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
177 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
178 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
179
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000180- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
181 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
182 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
183 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
184 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
185 failed have been fixed.
186
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000187Library
188-------
189
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +0000190- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
191
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000192- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
193 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
194
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000195- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
196 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
197 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
198
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000199- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
200 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
201 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
202 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
203 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
204 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
205
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000206- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
207 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
208
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +0000209- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
210
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +0000211- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.
212
Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +0000213- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.
214
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +0000215- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
216 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
217
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +0000218- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
219 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
220
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +0000221- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
222 in a redirect.
223
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000224- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in
Brett Cannon721b1452008-08-16 22:00:27 +0000225 BaseHTTPServer, cgi (and rfc822), httplib.
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000226
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +0000227- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash
228 after a 302 response in the case of not going through a proxy.
229
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +0000230- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
231 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
232 regular expression.
233
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +0000234- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now
235 thread-safe.
236
Brett Cannonbf3157b2008-08-14 05:00:03 +0000237- Silence the DeprecationWarning of rfc822 when it is imported by mimetools
238 since mimetools itself is deprecated. Because modules are cached, all
239 subsequent imports of rfc822 will not raise a visible DeprecationWarning.
240
Antoine Pitrou9fcd4b32008-08-11 17:21:36 +0000241- Issue #3134: shutil referenced undefined WindowsError symbol.
242

244 menu entries were not deleted.
245
Brett Cannon83e81842008-08-09 23:30:55 +0000246- Copied the implementation of reduce() to _functools.reduce() to have a
247 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
248
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +0000249- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise
250 a MemoryError rather than silently stop the iteration.
251
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +0000252- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"
253 to _sre.compile() will now be rejected. This should not affect anybody
254 since the re.compile() function never generates invalid re-bytecode.
255
Skip Montanaroa032bf42008-08-08 22:52:51 +0000256- Issue #3436: Make csv.DictReader's fieldnames attribute a property so that
257 upon first access it can be automatically initialized from the csv file if
258 it wasn't initialized during instantiation.
259
Brett Cannon3aa2a492008-08-06 22:28:09 +0000260- Issue #2338: Create imp.reload() to help with transitioning to Python 3.0 as
261 the reload() built-in has been removed.
262
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +0000263- Changed code in the following modules/packages to remove warnings raised
Brett Cannonc1b76e42008-08-09 23:06:16 +0000264 while running under the ``-3`` flag: aifc, asynchat, asyncore, bdb, bsddb,
Brett Cannon047e4a92008-08-17 04:16:04 +0000265 ConfigParser, cookielib, csv, difflib, distutils, DocXMLRPCServer, email,

269 threading, tokenize, traceback, urlparse, wsgiref, xml, xmlrpclib.
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +0000270
Lars Gustäbel727bd0b2008-08-02 11:26:39 +0000271- Issue #3039: Fix tarfile.TarFileCompat.writestr() which always
272 raised an AttributeError.

Antoine Pitroude781a42008-08-09 12:43:23 +0000275 asking for a specific length. This problem only affected files opened
276 using the new "io" module, not the built-in open() function.
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +0000277

300
Antoine Pitrou5fdfa3e2008-07-25 19:42:26 +0000301- Issue #3394: zipfile.writestr sets external attributes when passed a

319
Nick Coghlan2a0c2b12008-08-04 12:47:17 +0000320- Issue #643841: The language reference now provides more detailed

322 regarding lack of coverage of new-style classes have also been
323 removed, since the coverage is now fairly reasonable.

332-----------------
333
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000334- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
335 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
336 an integer using operator.index().
337
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000338- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
339 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
340
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000341- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
342 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
343
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000344- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
345 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
346 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
347
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000348- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
349 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
350 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
351 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
352 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
353 level.
354
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000355- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
356 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
357 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
358 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
359 all imports from that module to fail.
360
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000361- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
362 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
363 new-style classes.
364
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000365- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
366 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
367 another file in sys.stdout.
368
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000369- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
370 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
371 another thread's dictionary.
372
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000373- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
374 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
375 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
376 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
377 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
378 10, -1).
379
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000380- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
381 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
382 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000383
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000384- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
385 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into
386 ClearFreeList apis and calls them via gc.collect().

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000420- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
421 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000422 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000423 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never

441
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000442- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000894- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
895 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
896 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
897 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
898 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
899 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
900 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support
901 for the ``line`` argument will raise a DeprecationWarning.

Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000963
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000964- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
965 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
966 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
967 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
968 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
969 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
970 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
971 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
972 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
973 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
974 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
975 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
976 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
977 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
978 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
979 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
980 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
981 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
982 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
983 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
984
985 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
986 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
987 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
988 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
989 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
990 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
991 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
992 access to the underlying socket used.
993
994 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
995 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
996 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000997
998 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000999 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,

1002

1004 suite to run in parallel without issue.

Christian Heimes5224d282008-02-23 15:01:05 +00001279
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001280- Issue #1881: An internal parser limit has been increased. Also see
Facundo Batistafc2d0102008-02-23 12:01:13 +00001281 issue 215555 for a discussion.
1282
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001283- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1284 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1285 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1286 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1287 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1288 module is:
1289 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1290
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001291- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1292 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1293 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1294 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1295 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1296 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1297
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001298- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1299 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1300 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1301 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1302 PyObject_Format().
1303
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001304- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1305 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1306 state.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +00001307
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001308- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also

1316 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
1317 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001318
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001319- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a
1320 subclass of collections.defaultdict, if its default_factory is set
1321 to a bound method.

1334 calls. Python expected the return type int but the fork familie
1335 returns pi_t.
Christian Heimes951cc0f2008-01-31 23:08:23 +00001336
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001337- Issue #1678380: Fix a bug that identifies 0j and -0j when they

1351 produced the generator.
Georg Brandl0cdf9a32008-01-26 14:14:20 +00001352
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001353- Issue #1920: "while 0" statements were completely removed by the
1354 compiler, even in the presence of an "else" clause, which is
1355 supposed to be run when the condition is false. Now the compiler
1356 correctly emits bytecode for the "else" suite.

Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +00001537- Bug #1683368: The object.__init__() and object.__new__() methods are
1538 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when
1539 either allows excess arguments is when it is not overridden and the
1540 other one is. For backwards compatibility, when both are
1541 overridden, it is a deprecation warning (for now; maybe a Py3k
Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +00001542 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
1543 as supported by type.__new__().
Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +00001544
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001545- Patch #1675423: PyComplex_AsCComplex() now tries to convert an
1546 object to complex using its __complex__() method before falling back
1547 to the __float__() method. Therefore, the functions in the cmath
1548 module now can operate on objects that define a __complex__()
1549 method.

2624 or DB_DUPSORT flag set will keep the proper behavior on subsequent
2625 opens. Specifically: dictionary assignment to a DB object will
2626 replace all values for a given key when the database allows
2627 duplicate values. DB users should use DB.put(k, v) when they want
2628 to store duplicates; not DB[k] = v.
