365
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc05e34492008-09-10 22:04:45 +0000366- Issue #3743: In a few places, PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T was incorrectly used with
367 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro
368 PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T is designed to select the correct format for the OS
369 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent
370 implementation and uses "%zd" on all platforms for size_t values.
371 This makes a difference on win64, where ``printf`` needs "%Id" to display
372 64bit values.
373
Benjamin Peterson97179b02008-09-09 20:55:01 +0000374- Issue #3634: _weakref.ref(Exception).__init__() gave invalid return value on

378 object; previously an int would be returned for small values. the __long__
379 method is allowed to return either an int or a long, but the behaviour of

537Core and Builtins
538-----------------
539
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000540- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
541 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
542 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
543 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
544 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
545 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
546 default.
547
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000548- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
549 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
550
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000551- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
552 value again.
553
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000554- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
555 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
556 and introducing s*.
557
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000558- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
559 object was stored in the freelist.
560
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000561- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
562 ValueError consistently across platforms.
563
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000564- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
565 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
566 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
567
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000568- Apply security patches from Apple.
569
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000570- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
571 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
572
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000573- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
574 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
575
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000576- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
577 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
578 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
579
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000580- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
581 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
582 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
583 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
584 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
585 failed have been fixed.

591
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000592- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
593 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
594
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000595- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
596 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
597 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
598
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000599- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
600 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
601 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
602 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
603 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
604 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
605
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000606- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
607 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
608
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +0000609- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
610
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +0000611- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.

Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +0000613- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.
614
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +0000615- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
616 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
617
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +0000618- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()

732-----------------
733
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000734- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
735 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
736 an integer using operator.index().
737
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000738- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
739 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
740
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000741- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
742 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
743
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000744- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
745 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
746 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
747
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000748- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
749 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
750 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
751 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
752 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
753 level.
754
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000755- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
756 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
757 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
758 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
759 all imports from that module to fail.
760
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000761- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
762 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
763 new-style classes.
764
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000765- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is

767 another file in sys.stdout.
768
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000769- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from

771 another thread's dictionary.
772
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000773- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
774 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
775 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
776 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
777 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
778 10, -1).
779
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000780- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
781 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
782 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000820- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
821 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000822 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000823 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
824 merged into trunk.

1229
Ronald Oussoren5640ce22008-06-05 12:58:24 +00001230- On MacOS X it is now possible to install the framework in 64-bit
1231 mode or even as a 4-way universal binary (that is, PPC, i386,
Georg Brandl5cc774e2008-06-11 20:28:06 +00001232 PPC64 and x86_64 support in one binary).
Ronald Oussoren5640ce22008-06-05 12:58:24 +00001233
1234 This is controlled by the configure argument ``--with-universal-archs``:
1235
1236 - ``--with-universal-archs=all``: install 4-way universal
1237
1238 - ``--with-universal-archs=32-bit``: install 2-way universal, 32-bit (the default)
1239
1240 - ``--with-universal-archs=64-bit``: install 2-way universal, 64-bit
1241
1242 This option should be used in combination with ``--enable-universalsdk=``.
1243
1244 NOTE: 64-bit and 4-way builds are only suppported on Mac OS X 10.5 (or later).

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001294- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
1295 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
1296 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
1297 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
1298 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
1299 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
1300 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support

1362-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001363
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001364- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1365 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1366 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1367 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1368 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1369 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1370 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1371 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1372 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1373 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1374 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1375 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1376 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1377 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1378 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1379 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1380 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1381 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1382 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1383 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1384
1385 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1386 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1387 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1388 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1389 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1390 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1391 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1392 access to the underlying socket used.
1393
1394 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1395 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1396 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001397
1398 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001399 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,

1402

1682
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001683- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1684 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1685 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1686 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1687 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1688 module is:
1689 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1690
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001691- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1692 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1693 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1694 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1695 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1696 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1697
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001698- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1699 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1700 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1701 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1702 PyObject_Format().
1703
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001704- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1705 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1706 state.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +00001707
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001708- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001712- Fixed repr() and str() of complex numbers with infinity or nan as
1713 real or imaginary part.
Christian Heimes2f0da532008-02-15 06:57:08 +00001714
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001715- Clear all free lists during a gc.collect() of the highest generation
1716 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
1717 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001718
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001719- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a
1720 subclass of collections.defaultdict, if its default_factory is set
