17
Georg Brandl871f1bc2007-03-12 13:17:36 +000018- The dir() function has been extended to call the __dir__() method on
19 its argument, if it exists. If not, it will work like before. This allows
20 customizing the output of dir() in the presence of a __getattr__().
21
Collin Winter276887b2007-03-12 16:11:39 +000022- Patch #922167: Python no longer segfaults when faced with infinitely
23 self-recursive reload() calls (as reported by bug #742342).

33 a PYTHONSTARTUP file is used.
34
Georg Brandl49aafc92007-03-07 00:34:46 +000035- Variant of patch #697613: don't exit the interpreter on a SystemExit
36 exception if the -i command line option or PYTHONINSPECT environment
37 variable is given, but break into the interactive interpreter just like
38 on other exceptions or normal program exit.

Brett Cannon129bd522007-01-30 21:34:36 +000052- PEP 352: Raising a string exception now triggers a TypeError. Attempting to

54
Brett Cannonf5bee302007-01-23 23:21:22 +000055- Bug #1377858: Fix the segfaulting of the interpreter when an object created

162 occurs in __bases__, it must occur before any non-type bases, e.g.
163 before regular classes. 2) If you assign to __bases__, you may not
164 change the metaclass. Many more illegal assignments to __bases__
165 are now checked and raise TypeErrors. This changed fixed at least

713Core and builtins
714-----------------
715
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +0000716- Unicode objects will no longer raise an exception when being
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000717 compared equal or unequal to a string and a UnicodeDecodeError
718 exception occurs, e.g. as result of a decoding failure.
Neal Norwitz56423e52006-08-13 18:11:08 +0000719
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +0000720 Instead, the equal (==) and unequal (!=) comparison operators will
721 now issue a UnicodeWarning and interpret the two objects as
722 unequal. The UnicodeWarning can be filtered as desired using
723 the warning framework, e.g. silenced completely, turned into an
724 exception, logged, etc.
725
726 Note that compare operators other than equal and unequal will still
727 raise UnicodeDecodeError exceptions as they've always done.
Neal Norwitz8a87f5d2006-08-12 17:03:09 +0000728
Marc-André Lemburg757ea272006-08-14 11:44:34 +0000729- Fix segfault when doing string formatting on subclasses of long.
730
731- Fix bug related to __len__ functions using values > 2**32 on 64-bit machines
732 with new-style classes.
733
734- Fix bug related to __len__ functions returning negative values with
735 classic classes.
736
737- Patch #1538606, Fix __index__() clipping. There were some problems
738 discovered with the API and how integers that didn't fit into Py_ssize_t
739 were handled. This patch attempts to provide enough alternatives
740 to effectively use __index__.
741
Martin v. Löwisab2f8f72006-08-09 07:57:39 +0000742- Bug #1536021: __hash__ may now return long int; the final hash
743 value is obtained by invoking hash on the long int.
744
Thomas Hellerab1049c2006-08-08 17:37:00 +0000745- Bug #1536786: buffer comparison could emit a RuntimeWarning.
746
Georg Brandl7e3ba2a2006-08-06 08:23:54 +0000747- Bug #1535165: fixed a segfault in input() and raw_input() when
748 sys.stdin is closed.
749
Thomas Heller74d36f02006-08-04 18:17:40 +0000750- On Windows, the PyErr_Warn function is now exported from
751 the Python dll again.
752
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +0000753- Bug #1191458: tracing over for loops now produces a line event
754 on each iteration. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc
755 magic number. This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5c1
756 will be regenerated.
757
Neal Norwitz0cbd8052006-08-04 05:09:28 +0000758- Bug #1333982: string/number constants were inappropriately stored
759 in the byte code and co_consts even if they were not used, ie
760 immediately popped off the stack.
761
Georg Brandle9462c72006-08-04 18:03:37 +0000762- Fixed a reference-counting problem in property().

765Library
766-------
767
Neil Schemenauer4c6b0d52006-08-16 23:38:05 +0000768- Fix a bug in the ``compiler`` package that caused invalid code to be
769 generated for generator expressions.
770
Marc-André Lemburg574cfea2006-08-16 16:11:01 +0000771- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0. The change to
772 keep it programmatically in sync with the Python version running
773 the code (introduced in 2.5b3) has been reverted. It will continue
774 to be maintained manually as static string literal.
775
Andrew M. Kuchlingc13324e2006-08-16 17:11:18 +0000776- If the Python part of a ctypes callback function returns None,
Thomas Hellerb4a0cf12006-08-16 15:10:12 +0000777 and this cannot be converted to the required C type, an exception is
778 printed with PyErr_WriteUnraisable. Before this change, the C
Andrew M. Kuchlingc13324e2006-08-16 17:11:18 +0000779 callback returned arbitrary values to the calling code.
Thomas Hellerb4a0cf12006-08-16 15:10:12 +0000780
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000781- The __repr__ method of a NULL ctypes.py_object() no longer raises
Thomas Hellerb0aa98f2006-08-16 14:07:44 +0000782 an exception.
783
Tim Petersc10c9d02006-09-05 02:18:09 +0000784- uuid.UUID now has a bytes_le attribute. This returns the UUID in
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000785 little-endian byte order for Windows. In addition, uuid.py gained some
Anthony Baxter58179592006-08-16 13:08:25 +0000786 workarounds for clocks with low resolution, to stop the code yielding
787 duplicate UUIDs.
788
Kurt B. Kaiserd112bc72006-08-16 05:01:42 +0000789- Patch #1540892: site.py Quitter() class attempts to close sys.stdin
790 before raising SystemExit, allowing IDLE to honor quit() and exit().
791
Neal Norwitzbf8c1952006-08-15 04:14:57 +0000792- Bug #1224621: make tabnanny recognize IndentationErrors raised by tokenize.
793
Georg Brandl7a1af772006-08-14 21:55:28 +0000794- Patch #1536071: trace.py should now find the full module name of a

898 Unfortunately, at least one compiler now cares about that, so complicated
899 the code to make that compiler happy again.

Andrew M. Kuchling93c928e2006-07-26 17:19:39 +0000916- Bug #1520864: unpacking singleton tuples in a 'for' loop (for x, in) works
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000917 again. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc magic number.
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +0000918 This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5b3 will be regenerated.

942
Tim Petersc10c9d02006-09-05 02:18:09 +0000943- The renaming of the xml package to xmlcore, and the import hackery done
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000944 to make it appear at both names, has been removed. Bug #1511497,

949
Tim Peters6f681472006-07-27 23:44:37 +0000950- Bug #1529297: The rewrite of doctest for Python 2.4 unintentionally
951 lost that tests are sorted by name before being run. This rarely
952 matters for well-written tests, but can create baffling symptoms if
953 side effects from one test to the next affect outcomes. ``DocTestFinder``

Brett Cannoncaebe222006-07-18 04:41:36 +0000976- Bug #1520914: Change time.strftime() to accept a zero for any position in its
977 argument tuple. For arguments where zero is illegal, the value is forced to
978 the minimum value that is correct. This is to support an undocumented but
979 common way people used to fill in inconsequential information in the time
980 tuple pre-2.4.
981
Bob Ippolito5ea4bf12006-07-15 16:53:15 +0000982- Patch #1220874: Update the binhex module for Mach-O.
983
Barry Warsawb110bad2006-07-21 14:51:07 +0000984- The email package has improved RFC 2231 support, specifically for
985 recognizing the difference between encoded (name*0*=<blah>) and non-encoded
986 (name*0=<blah>) parameter continuations. This may change the types of
987 values returned from email.message.Message.get_param() and friends.
988 Specifically in some cases where non-encoded continuations were used,
989 get_param() used to return a 3-tuple of (None, None, string) whereas now it
990 will just return the string (since non-encoded continuations don't have
991 charset and language parts).
992
993 Also, whereas % values were decoded in all parameter continuations, they are
994 now only decoded in encoded parameter parts.
995
Ronald Oussoren3075e162006-07-25 20:28:55 +0000996- Bug #1517990: IDLE keybindings on MacOS X now work correctly

999 path browser, class browser or debugger is the frontmost window on MacOS X
1000
Barry Warsaw00decd72006-07-27 23:43:15 +00001001- Patch #1520294: Support for getset and member descriptors in types.py,
1002 inspect.py, and pydoc.py. Specifically, this allows for querying the type
1003 of an object against these built-in types and more importantly, for getting
1004 their docstrings printed in the interactive interpreter's help() function.

1028
Thomas Heller6e1ad2e2006-07-13 17:05:13 +00001029- Bug #1521375: When the code in ctypes.util.find_library was

1032
Thomas Heller47d7a062006-07-12 08:43:47 +00001033- Bug #1467450: On Mac OS X 10.3, RTLD_GLOBAL is now used as the

1040 methods now allow their database parameter to be None as the
1041 sleepycat API allows.
1042
Matt Flemingec926502006-07-28 11:27:27 +00001043- Bug #1526460: Fix socketmodule compile on NetBSD as it has a different

1051 (exact time) +/- 10% instead of the hard-coded 3.1 sec.
1052
Georg Brandl4793aa32006-07-28 18:31:39 +00001053- Patch #1529686: The standard tests ``test_defaultdict``, ``test_iterlen``,

Neil Schemenauer0e07b602006-07-09 16:16:34 +00001085- Bug #1501934: The scope of global variables that are locally assigned
1086 using augmented assignment is now correctly determined.
1087
Martin v. Löwisd5cfa542006-07-03 13:47:40 +00001088- Bug #927248: Recursive method-wrapper objects can now safely

1092 and atof().
1093
Hye-Shik Change6a1cb92006-06-23 21:16:18 +00001094- Bug #1511381: codec_getstreamcodec() in codec.c is corrected to
1095 omit a default "error" argument for NULL pointer. This allows
1096 the parser to take a codec from cjkcodecs again.
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +00001097
Neal Norwitzfb48afa2006-07-08 05:31:37 +00001098- Bug #1519018: 'as' is now validated properly in import statements.
1099
Neal Norwitz28746ab2006-07-09 22:14:42 +00001100- On 64 bit systems, int literals that use less than 64 bits are
1101 now ints rather than longs.
1102
Neal Norwitzed657552006-07-10 00:04:44 +00001103- Bug #1512814, Fix incorrect lineno's when code at module scope
1104 started after line 256.
1105
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +00001106- New function ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dict mapping thread
1107 id to topmost thread stack frame. This is for expert use, and is
1108 especially useful for debugging application deadlocks. The functionality
1109 was previously available in Fazal Majid's ``threadframe`` extension
1110 module, but it wasn't possible to do this in a wholly threadsafe way from
1111 an extension.

1128
Thomas Woutersadd19112006-07-05 11:03:49 +00001129- string.Template() now correctly handles tuple-values. Previously,
1130 multi-value tuples would raise an exception and single-value tuples would
1131 be treated as the value they contain, instead.
1132
Martin v. Löwisede77f52006-07-03 13:01:35 +00001133- Bug #822974: Honor timeout in telnetlib.{expect,read_until}

1149 socket again, which then gets closed as it becomes unreferenced.
1150
Fred Drake10497c82006-06-29 02:57:48 +00001151- Bug #1504333: Make sgmllib support angle brackets in quoted
1152 attribute values.

1156
Georg Brandl1be63af2006-06-28 20:23:25 +00001157- Fix a bug in the turtle module's end_fill function.
1158
Brett Cannon53ab5b72006-06-22 16:49:14 +00001159- Bug #1510580: The 'warnings' module improperly required that a Warning
1160 category be either a types.ClassType and a subclass of Warning. The proper
1161 check is just that it is a subclass with Warning as the documentation states.
1162
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +00001163- The compiler module now correctly compiles the new try-except-finally

1170
Gerhard Häring762fbd32006-07-02 17:48:30 +00001171- The sqlite3 module did cut off data from the SQLite database at the first
1172 null character before sending it to a custom converter. This has been fixed
1173 now.

Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +00001178- #1494314: Fix a regression with high-numbered sockets in 2.4.3. This
1179 means that select() on sockets > FD_SETSIZE (typically 1024) work again.
1180 The patch makes sockets use poll() internally where available.

Thomas Hellerb9cb84f2006-07-10 11:17:37 +00001182- Assigning None to pointer type fields in ctypes structures possible
1183 overwrote the wrong fields, this is fixed now.
1184
1185- Fixed a segfault in _ctypes when ctypes.wintypes were imported
1186 on non-Windows platforms.
1187
1188- Bug #1518190: The ctypes.c_void_p constructor now accepts any
1189 integer or long, without range checking.
1190
1191- Patch #1517790: It is now possible to use custom objects in the ctypes
1192 foreign function argtypes sequence as long as they provide a from_param
1193 method, no longer is it required that the object is a ctypes type.
1194
1195- The '_ctypes' extension module now works when Python is configured
1196 with the --without-threads option.
1197
Martin v. Löwisee1e06d2006-07-02 18:44:00 +00001198- Bug #1513646: os.access on Windows now correctly determines write
1199 access, again.
1200
Neal Norwitz0f8b31a2006-06-28 06:28:31 +00001201- Bug #1512695: cPickle.loads could crash if it was interrupted with
1202 a KeyboardInterrupt.
1203
Neal Norwitza12aa882006-07-06 06:45:08 +00001204- Bug #1296433: parsing XML with a non-default encoding and
1205 a CharacterDataHandler could crash the interpreter in pyexpat.
1206
Neal Norwitz2a30cd02006-07-10 01:18:57 +00001207- Patch #1516912: improve Modules support for OpenVMS.

1213
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +00001214- 'configure' now detects the zlib library the same way as distutils.
Thomas Woutersfc34f6c2006-07-06 10:48:28 +00001215 Previously, the slight difference could cause compilation errors of the
1216 'zlib' module on systems with more than one version of zlib.
1217
Martin v. Löwis4cbd05c2006-07-06 07:05:21 +00001218- The MSI compileall step was fixed to also support a TARGETDIR

1249Core and builtins
1250-----------------
1251
Georg Brandla56b9152006-06-19 06:35:54 +00001252- Patch #1507676: Error messages returned by invalid abstract object operations
1253 (such as iterating over an integer) have been improved and now include the
1254 type of the offending object to help with debugging.
1255
Brett Cannonea3912b2006-06-13 21:46:41 +00001256- Bug #992017: A classic class that defined a __coerce__() method that returned
1257 its arguments swapped would infinitely recurse and segfault the interpreter.
1258
Neal Norwitz909eb122006-06-12 02:13:21 +00001259- Fix the socket tests so they can be run concurrently.
1260
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +00001261- Removed 5 integers from C frame objects (PyFrameObject).
Vinay Sajip28e57612006-07-01 10:45:20 +00001262 f_nlocals, f_ncells, f_nfreevars, f_stack_size, f_restricted.
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +00001263
Brett Cannon22565aa2006-06-09 22:31:23 +00001264- Bug #532646: object.__call__() will continue looking for the __call__
1265 attribute on objects until one without one is found. This leads to recursion
1266 when you take a class and set its __call__ attribute to an instance of the
1267 class. Originally fixed for classic classes, but this fix is for new-style.
1268 Removes the infinite_rec_3 crasher.
1269
Georg Brandl24250812006-06-09 18:45:48 +00001270- The string and unicode methods startswith() and endswith() now accept
1271 a tuple of prefixes/suffixes to look for. Implements RFE #1491485.
1272
Brett Cannonde3b0522006-06-08 17:00:45 +00001273- Buffer objects, at the C level, never used the char buffer
1274 implementation even when the char buffer for the wrapped object was
1275 explicitly requested (originally returned the read or write buffer).
1276 Now a TypeError is raised if the char buffer is not present but is
1277 requested.
1278
Georg Brandlddbaa662006-06-04 21:56:52 +00001279- Patch #1346214: Statements like "if 0: suite" are now again optimized
1280 away like they were in Python 2.4.
1281
Georg Brandlb7c8f542006-05-27 12:30:25 +00001282- Builtin exceptions are now full-blown new-style classes instead of
1283 instances pretending to be classes, which speeds up exception handling
1284 by about 80% in comparison to 2.5a2.
1285
Martin v. Löwisd004fc82006-05-27 08:36:52 +00001286- Patch #1494554: Update unicodedata.numeric and unicode.isnumeric to
1287 Unicode 4.1.
1288
Georg Brandlf4ef1162006-05-26 18:03:31 +00001289- Patch #921466: sys.path_importer_cache is now used to cache valid and
1290 invalid file paths for the built-in import machinery which leads to
1291 fewer open calls on startup.
1292
Tim Peters696cf432006-05-24 21:10:40 +00001293- Patch #1442927: ``long(str, base)`` is now up to 6x faster for non-power-
1294 of-2 bases. The largest speedup is for inputs with about 1000 decimal
1295 digits. Conversion from non-power-of-2 bases remains quadratic-time in
1296 the number of input digits (it was and remains linear-time for bases
1297 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32).
1298
Tim Petersb713ec22006-05-23 18:45:30 +00001299- Bug #1334662: ``int(string, base)`` could deliver a wrong answer
1300 when ``base`` was not 2, 4, 8, 10, 16 or 32, and ``string`` represented
1301 an integer close to ``sys.maxint``. This was repaired by patch
1302 #1335972, which also gives a nice speedup.
1303
Richard Jonescebbefc2006-05-23 18:28:17 +00001304- Patch #1337051: reduced size of frame objects.
1305
1306- PyErr_NewException now accepts a tuple of base classes as its
1307 "base" parameter.
1308
Richard Jones7c88dcc2006-05-23 10:37:38 +00001309- Patch #876206: function call speedup by retaining allocated frame
1310 objects.
1311
Georg Brandl7b90e162006-05-18 07:01:27 +00001312- Bug #1462152: file() now checks more thoroughly for invalid mode
1313 strings and removes a possible "U" before passing the mode to the
1314 C library function.
1315
Neal Norwitz1004a532006-05-15 07:17:23 +00001316- Patch #1488312, Fix memory alignment problem on SPARC in unicode
1317
Neal Norwitz373f0a72006-05-15 07:04:36 +00001318- Bug #1487966: Fix SystemError with conditional expression in assignment
1319
Martin v. Löwis879768d2006-05-11 13:28:43 +00001320- WindowsError now has two error code attributes: errno, which carries
1321 the error values from errno.h, and winerror, which carries the error
1322 values from winerror.h. Previous versions put the winerror.h values
1323 (from GetLastError()) into the errno attribute.
1324
Martin v. Löwis77736712006-05-04 05:51:03 +00001325- Patch #1475845: Raise IndentationError for unexpected indent.
1326
Neal Norwitzc4edb0e2006-05-02 04:43:14 +00001327- Patch #1479181: split open() and file() from being aliases for each other.
1328
Tim Peters44bd9862006-06-01 13:49:23 +00001329- Patch #1497053 & bug #1275608: Exceptions occurring in ``__eq__()``
1330 methods were always silently ignored by dictionaries when comparing keys.
1331 They are now passed through (except when using the C API function
1332 ``PyDict_GetItem()``, whose semantics did not change).
1333
1334- Bug #1456209: In some obscure cases it was possible for a class with a
1335 custom ``__eq__()`` method to confuse dict internals when class instances
1336 were used as a dict's keys and the ``__eq__()`` method mutated the dict.
1337 No, you don't have any code that did this ;-)

1343
1344- Patch #1462338: Upgrade pyexpat to expat 2.0.0
1345
Brett Cannon6ee7d012006-06-08 16:23:04 +00001346- Change binascii.hexlify to accept a read-only buffer instead of only a char
1347 buffer and actually follow its documentation.
1348
Hye-Shik Chang58ce5bc2006-06-05 00:59:54 +00001349- Fixed a potentially invalid memory access of CJKCodecs' shift-jis decoder.
1350
Nick Coghlanc649ec52006-05-29 12:43:05 +00001351- Patch #1478788 (modified version): The functional extension module has
1352 been renamed to _functools and a functools Python wrapper module added.
1353 This provides a home for additional function related utilities that are
1354 not specifically about functional programming. See PEP 309.
1355
Bob Ippolito7ccc95a2006-05-23 19:11:34 +00001356- Patch #1493701: performance enhancements for struct module.

1361 copy() method.
1362
Andrew MacIntyre92913322006-06-13 15:04:24 +00001363- Patch #1454481: thread stack size is now tunable at runtime for thread

1365
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +00001366- On Win32, os.listdir now supports arbitrarily-long Unicode path names
1367 (up to the system limit of 32K characters).
1368
1369- Use Win32 API to implement os.{access,chdir,chmod,mkdir,remove,rename,rmdir,utime}.
1370 As a result, these functions now raise WindowsError instead of OSError.
1371
Tim Peters7a822da2006-05-25 21:50:17 +00001372- ``time.clock()`` on Win64 should use the high-performance Windows
1373 ``QueryPerformanceCounter()`` now (as was already the case on 32-bit
1374 Windows platforms).
1375
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +00001376- Calling Tk_Init twice is refused if the first call failed as that
1377 may deadlock.
1378
Gregory P. Smith0459e4d2006-06-05 02:02:25 +00001379- bsddb: added the DB_ARCH_REMOVE flag and fixed db.DBEnv.log_archive() to
1380 accept it without potentially using an uninitialized pointer.
1381
1382- bsddb: added support for the DBEnv.log_stat() and DBEnv.lsn_reset() methods
1383 assuming BerkeleyDB >= 4.0 and 4.4 respectively. [pybsddb project SF
1384 patch numbers 1494885 and 1494902]

1391
Gregory P. Smith3c228b12006-06-05 23:59:37 +00001392- bsddb: the __len__ method of a DB object has been fixed to return correct
1393 results. It could previously incorrectly return 0 in some cases.
1394 Fixes SF bug 1493322 (pybsddb bug 1184012).
1395
Gregory P. Smithff7d9912006-06-08 05:17:08 +00001396- bsddb: the bsddb.dbtables Modify method now raises the proper error and
1397 aborts the db transaction safely when a modifier callback fails.
1398 Fixes SF python patch/bug #1408584.
1399
Gregory P. Smith506f7b52006-06-15 08:52:32 +00001400- bsddb: multithreaded DB access using the simple bsddb module interface
Vinay Sajip28e57612006-07-01 10:45:20 +00001401 now works reliably. It has been updated to use automatic BerkeleyDB
Gregory P. Smith506f7b52006-06-15 08:52:32 +00001402 deadlock detection and the bsddb.dbutils.DeadlockWrap wrapper to retry
1403 database calls that would previously deadlock. [SF python bug #775414]

1427 mime.types file for determining MIME types.
1428
Georg Brandl2605ca82006-06-14 06:08:31 +00001429- Bug #1339007: Shelf objects now don't raise an exception in their
1430 __del__ method when initialization failed.
1431
Martin v. Löwisd8251432006-06-14 05:21:04 +00001432- Patch #1455898: The MBCS codec now supports the incremental mode for
1433 double-byte encodings.
1434
Tim Peters43898b42006-06-14 04:09:25 +00001435- ``difflib``'s ``SequenceMatcher.get_matching_blocks()`` was changed to
1436 guarantee that adjacent triples in the return list always describe
1437 non-adjacent blocks. Previously, a pair of matching blocks could end
1438 up being described by multiple adjacent triples that formed a partition
1439 of the matching pair.
1440
Greg Ward0e0c9f42006-06-11 16:24:11 +00001441- Bug #1498146: fix optparse to handle Unicode strings in option help,
1442 description, and epilog.

1447 clarify docs.
1448
Andrew M. Kuchling0873b112006-06-09 16:46:51 +00001449- The wsgiref package has been added to the standard library.
1450
Nick Coghlan676725d2006-06-08 13:54:49 +00001451- The functions update_wrapper() and wraps() have been added to the functools
1452 module. These make it easier to copy relevant metadata from the original
1453 function when writing wrapper functions.
1454
Tim Petersd6a9eef2006-06-05 01:48:21 +00001455- The optional ``isprivate`` argument to ``doctest.testmod()``, and the
1456 ``doctest.is_private()`` function, both deprecated in 2.4, were removed.
Tim Petersbf0400a2006-06-05 01:43:03 +00001457
Martin v. Löwis3f767792006-06-04 19:36:28 +00001458- Patch #1359618: Speed up charmap encoder by using a trie structure
1459 for lookup.
1460
Tim Petersd609b1a2006-06-02 23:22:51 +00001461- The functions in the ``pprint`` module now sort dictionaries by key
1462 before computing the display. Before 2.5, ``pprint`` sorted a dictionary
1463 if and only if its display required more than one line, although that
1464 wasn't documented. The new behavior increases predictability; e.g.,
1465 using ``pprint.pprint(a_dict)`` in a doctest is now reliable.
1466
Georg Brandlfd9a4b12006-05-29 20:57:01 +00001467- Patch #1497027: try HTTP digest auth before basic auth in urllib2

1539
1540*Release date: 27-APR-2006*
1541
1542Core and builtins
1543-----------------
1544
Thomas Heller1b046642006-04-18 18:51:06 +00001545- Bug #1465834: 'bdist_wininst preinstall script support' was fixed
1546 by converting these apis from macros into exported functions again:
1547
1548 PyParser_SimpleParseFile PyParser_SimpleParseString PyRun_AnyFile
1549 PyRun_AnyFileEx PyRun_AnyFileFlags PyRun_File PyRun_FileEx
1550 PyRun_FileFlags PyRun_InteractiveLoop PyRun_InteractiveOne
1551 PyRun_SimpleFile PyRun_SimpleFileEx PyRun_SimpleString
1552 PyRun_String Py_CompileString
1553
Martin v. Löwis45294a92006-04-18 06:24:08 +00001554- Under COUNT_ALLOCS, types are not necessarily immortal anymore.
1555
Martin v. Löwis19ab6c92006-04-16 18:55:50 +00001556- All uses of PyStructSequence_InitType have been changed to initialize
1557 the type objects only once, even if the interpreter is initialized
1558 multiple times.
1559
Neal Norwitz61546162006-04-14 05:20:28 +00001560- Bug #1454485, array.array('u') could crash the interpreter. This was
1561 due to PyArgs_ParseTuple(args, 'u#', ...) trying to convert buffers (strings)
1562 to unicode when it didn't make sense. 'u#' now requires a unicode string.
1563
1564- Py_UNICODE is unsigned. It was always documented as unsigned, but
1565 due to a bug had a signed value in previous versions.
1566
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001567- Patch #837242: ``id()`` of any Python object always gives a positive
1568 number now, which might be a long integer. ``PyLong_FromVoidPtr`` and
1569 ``PyLong_AsVoidPtr`` have been changed accordingly. Note that it has
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001570 never been correct to implement a ``__hash()__`` method that returns the
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001571 ``id()`` of an object:
Martin v. Löwis0bc2ab92006-04-10 20:28:17 +00001572
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001573 def __hash__(self):
1574 return id(self) # WRONG
1575
1576 because a hash result must be a (short) Python int but it was always
1577 possible for ``id()`` to return a Python long. However, because ``id()``
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001578 could return negative values before, on a 32-bit box an ``id()`` result
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001579 was always usable as a hash value before this patch. That's no longer
1580 necessarily so.
1581
1582- Python on OS X 10.3 and above now uses dlopen() (via dynload_shlib.c)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001583 to load extension modules and now provides the dl module. As a result,
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001584 sys.setdlopenflags() now works correctly on these systems. (SF patch
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001585 #1454844)
1586
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00001587- Patch #1463867: enhanced garbage collection to allow cleanup of cycles
1588 involving generators that have paused outside of any ``try`` or ``with``
1589 blocks. (In 2.5a1, a paused generator that was part of a reference
1590 cycle could not be garbage collected, regardless of whether it was
1591 paused in a ``try`` or ``with`` block.)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001592
Anthony Baxter51bcb682006-04-05 14:51:42 +00001593Extension Modules

1605 the cachesize parameter.
1606
1607- Bug #1149413: bsddb.*open() no longer raises an exception when using
1608 a temporary db (file=None) with the 'n' flag to truncate on open.
1609
1610- Bug #1332852: bsddb module minimum BerkeleyDB version raised to 3.3
1611 as older versions cause excessive test failures.
Gregory P. Smith7f5b6f42006-04-08 07:10:51 +00001612
Armin Rigoa9017c32006-04-19 11:50:27 +00001613- Patch #1062014: AF_UNIX sockets under Linux have a special
1614 abstract namespace that is now fully supported.

1621 abusing errno.
1622
Tim Peters711bf302006-04-25 03:31:36 +00001623- Patch #1475231: ``doctest`` has a new ``SKIP`` option, which causes
1624 a doctest to be skipped (the code is not run, and the expected output
1625 or exception is ignored).
1626
Nick Coghlanda2268f2006-04-24 04:37:15 +00001627- Fixed contextlib.nested to cope with exceptions being raised and
1628 caught inside exit handlers.
1629
Greg Wardab05edc2006-04-23 03:47:58 +00001630- Updated optparse module to Optik 1.5.1 (allow numeric constants in
1631 hex, octal, or binary; add ``append_const`` action; keep going if
1632 gettext cannot be imported; added ``OptionParser.destroy()`` method;
1633 added ``epilog`` for better help generation).
1634
Tim Peters21fbd572006-04-21 21:18:10 +00001635- Bug #1473760: ``tempfile.TemporaryFile()`` could hang on Windows, when
1636 called from a thread spawned as a side effect of importing a module.
1637
Phillip J. Eby17a35f92006-04-18 16:45:14 +00001638- The pydoc module now supports documenting packages contained in
1639 .zip or .egg files.
1640
1641- The pkgutil module now has several new utility functions, such
1642 as ``walk_packages()`` to support working with packages that are either
1643 in the filesystem or zip files.
1644
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00001645- The mailbox module can now modify and delete messages from

1647 K. Johnson for writing the code, and to the 2005 Google Summer of
1648 Code for funding his work.
Phillip J. Eby17a35f92006-04-18 16:45:14 +00001649

1709 the current Decimal context.
1710
Thomas Woutersabd08882006-04-26 15:53:30 +00001711- regrtest.py now has a -M option to run tests that test the new limits of
1712 containers, on 64-bit architectures. Running these tests is only sensible
1713 on 64-bit machines with more than two gigabytes of memory. The argument
1714 passed is the maximum amount of memory for the tests to use.

1741-----------------
1742
Nick Coghlan43832302006-04-23 17:04:07 +00001743- PEP 338: -m command line switch now delegates to runpy.run_module
1744 allowing it to support modules in packages and zipfiles
1745
Martin v. Löwisc661b882006-04-20 04:54:23 +00001746- On Windows, .DLL is not an accepted file name extension for
1747 extension modules anymore; extensions are only found if they
1748 end in .PYD.
1749
Martin v. Löwisea62d252006-04-03 10:56:49 +00001750- Bug #1421664: sys.stderr.encoding is now set to the same value as
1751 sys.stdout.encoding.
1752
Neal Norwitz92e212f2006-04-03 04:48:37 +00001753- __import__ accepts keyword arguments.
1754
Georg Brandlccadf842006-03-31 18:54:53 +00001755- Patch #1460496: round() now accepts keyword arguments.
1756
Anthony Baxter262c00a2006-03-30 10:53:17 +00001757- Fixed bug #1459029 - unicode reprs were double-escaped.
1758
Hye-Shik Changd478f342006-03-23 12:32:36 +00001759- Patch #1396919: The system scope threads are reenabled on FreeBSD
1760 5.4 and later versions.
1761
Neal Norwitze98ccf62006-03-23 05:39:47 +00001762- Bug #1115379: Compiling a Unicode string with an encoding declaration
1763 now gives a SyntaxError.
1764
Georg Brandlabd1ff82006-03-18 07:59:59 +00001765- Previously, Python code had no easy way to access the contents of a
1766 cell object. Now, a ``cell_contents`` attribute has been added
1767 (closes patch #1170323).
1768
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001769- Patch #1123430: Python's small-object allocator now returns an arena to
1770 the system ``free()`` when all memory within an arena becomes unused
1771 again. Prior to Python 2.5, arenas (256KB chunks of memory) were never
1772 freed. Some applications will see a drop in virtual memory size now,
1773 especially long-running applications that, from time to time, temporarily
1774 use a large number of small objects. Note that when Python returns an
1775 arena to the platform C's ``free()``, there's no guarantee that the
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00001776 platform C library will in turn return that memory to the operating system.
1777 The effect of the patch is to stop making that impossible, and in tests it
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001778 appears to be effective at least on Microsoft C and gcc-based systems.
1779 Thanks to Evan Jones for hard work and patience.

Georg Brandl533ff6f2006-03-08 18:09:27 +00001781- Patch #1434038: property() now uses the getter's docstring if there is
1782 no "doc" argument given. This makes it possible to legitimately use
1783 property() as a decorator to produce a read-only property.
1784
Guido van Rossum9aa37ab2006-03-07 18:54:08 +00001785- PEP 357, patch 1436368: add an __index__ method to int/long and a matching
1786 nb_index slot to the PyNumberMethods struct. The slot is consulted instead
1787 of requiring an int or long in slicing and a few other contexts, enabling
1788 other objects (e.g. Numeric Python's integers) to be used as slice indices.
1789
Neal Norwitz995acdf2006-03-07 05:01:00 +00001790- Fixed various bugs reported by Coverity's Prevent tool.
1791
Brett Cannonbf364092006-03-01 04:25:17 +00001792- PEP 352, patch #1104669: Make exceptions new-style objects. Introduced the
1793 new exception base class, BaseException, which has a new message attribute.
1794 KeyboardInterrupt and SystemExit to directly inherit from BaseException now.
1795 Raising a string exception now raises a DeprecationWarning.
1796
Thomas Woutersfb609f42006-02-28 16:37:25 +00001797- Patch #1438387, PEP 328: relative and absolute imports. Imports can now be
1798 explicitly relative, using 'from .module import name' to mean 'from the same
1799 package as this module is in. Imports without dots still default to the
1800 old relative-then-absolute, unless 'from __future__ import
1801 absolute_import' is used.
1802
Brett Cannona7446e32006-02-27 23:39:10 +00001803- Properly check if 'warnings' raises an exception (usually when a filter set
1804 to "error" is triggered) when raising a warning for raising string
1805 exceptions.
1806
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001807- CO_GENERATOR_ALLOWED is no longer defined. This behavior is the default.
Neal Norwitz0023a2f2006-02-27 23:24:48 +00001808 The name was removed from Include/code.h.
1809
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001810- PEP 308: conditional expressions were added: (x if cond else y).
Neal Norwitzeb651252006-02-27 16:47:12 +00001811
Guido van Rossum1968ad32006-02-25 22:38:04 +00001812- Patch 1433928:
1813 - The copy module now "copies" function objects (as atomic objects).
1814 - dict.__getitem__ now looks for a __missing__ hook before raising
1815 KeyError.
1816
Tim Peters84ef21c2006-02-28 20:39:06 +00001817- PEP 343: with statement implemented. Needs ``from __future__ import
1818 with_statement``. Use of 'with' as a variable will generate a warning.
1819 Use of 'as' as a variable will also generate a warning (unless it's
Neal Norwitz055ec242006-02-28 20:06:49 +00001820 part of an import statement).
Guido van Rossum1a5e21e2006-02-28 21:57:43 +00001821 The following objects have __context__ methods:
1822 - The built-in file type.
1823 - The thread.LockType type.
1824 - The following types defined by the threading module:
1825 Lock, RLock, Condition, Semaphore, BoundedSemaphore.
1826 - The decimal.Context class.
Guido van Rossumc2e20742006-02-27 22:32:47 +00001827
Marc-André Lemburgfe4b34c2006-02-19 15:22:22 +00001828- Fix the encodings package codec search function to only search
1829 inside its own package. Fixes problem reported in patch #1433198.
1830
1831 Note: Codec packages should implement and register their own
1832 codec search function. PEP 100 has the details.
1833
Tim Peters9ea89d22006-06-04 03:26:02 +00001834- PEP 353: Using ``Py_ssize_t`` as the index type.
1835
1836- ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` builds now add ``4*sizeof(size_t)`` bytes of debugging
1837 info to each allocated block, since the ``Py_ssize_t`` changes (PEP 353)
1838 now allow Python to make use of memory blocks exceeding 2**32 bytes for
1839 some purposes on 64-bit boxes. A ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` build was limited
1840 to 4-byte allocations before.
Martin v. Löwis18e16552006-02-15 17:27:45 +00001841
Neal Norwitzfc76d632006-01-10 06:03:13 +00001842- Patch #1400181, fix unicode string formatting to not use the locale.
1843 This is how string objects work. u'%f' could use , instead of .
1844 for the decimal point. Now both strings and unicode always use periods.
1845
Neal Norwitz671b9e32006-01-09 07:07:12 +00001846- Bug #1244610, #1392915, fix build problem on OpenBSD 3.7 and 3.8.
1847 configure would break checking curses.h.
1848
Georg Brandlcd4d1e82005-12-27 17:37:07 +00001849- Bug #959576: The pwd module is now builtin. This allows Python to be
1850 built on UNIX platforms without $HOME set.
1851
Neal Norwitzc10978f2005-12-19 06:07:16 +00001852- Bug #1072182, fix some potential problems if characters are signed.
1853
Neal Norwitz5d0ad502005-12-19 04:27:42 +00001854- Bug #889500, fix line number on SyntaxWarning for global declarations.
1855
Neal Norwitzdb83eb32005-12-18 05:29:30 +00001856- Bug #1378022, UTF-8 files with a leading BOM crashed the interpreter.
1857
Neal Norwitze7214a12005-12-18 05:03:17 +00001858- Support for converting hex strings to floats no longer works.
1859 This was not portable. float('0x3') now raises a ValueError.
1860
Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00001861- Patch #1382163: Expose Subversion revision number to Python. New C API
Barry Warsawd3c38ff2006-03-07 09:46:03 +00001862 function Py_GetBuildNumber(). New attribute sys.subversion. Build number
Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00001863 is now displayed in interactive prompt banner.
1864
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00001865- Implementation of PEP 341 - Unification of try/except and try/finally.
1866 "except" clauses can now be written together with a "finally" clause in
Neal Norwitz11ca77e2005-12-17 22:24:12 +00001867 one try statement instead of two nested ones. Patch #1355913.
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00001868
Hye-Shik Chang835b2432005-12-17 04:38:31 +00001869- Bug #1379994: Builtin unicode_escape and raw_unicode_escape codec

1873
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001874- Bug #1281408: Py_BuildValue now works correctly even with unsigned longs
Georg Brandlf06e30a2005-11-24 15:37:42 +00001875 and long longs.
1876
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00001877- SF Bug #1350188, "setdlopenflags" leads to crash upon "import"
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001878 It was possible for dlerror() to return a NULL pointer, so
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001879 it will now use a default error message in this case.
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00001880
Marc-André Lemburga5bafc42005-10-23 13:43:40 +00001881- Replaced most Unicode charmap codecs with new ones using the
1882 new Unicode translate string feature in the builtin charmap
1883 codec; the codecs were created from the mapping tables available
1884 at ftp.unicode.org and contain a few updates (e.g. the Mac OS
1885 encodings now include a mapping for the Apple logo)
1886
Tim Peterse3547fd2005-12-16 23:13:57 +00001887- Added a few more codecs for Mac OS encodings
Marc-André Lemburga5bafc42005-10-23 13:43:40 +00001888

1892 syntax tree is available for read-only (non-compile) access
Martin v. Löwis577b5b92006-02-27 15:23:19 +00001893 to Python code; an _ast module was added.
Neal Norwitzfed9b3e2005-10-21 06:32:02 +00001894
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001895- SF bug #1167751: fix incorrect code being produced for generator expressions.
Neal Norwitz16af7342005-10-21 06:25:33 +00001896 The following code now raises a SyntaxError: foo(a = i for i in range(10))

1901 Provide a warning when a directory is passed on the command line.
1902
Neal Norwitz40d37812005-10-02 01:48:49 +00001903- Fix segfault with invalid coding.
1904
1905- SF bug #772896: unknown encoding results in MemoryError.
1906
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001907- All iterators now have a Boolean value of True. Formerly, some iterators
Raymond Hettinger6b27cda2005-09-24 21:23:05 +00001908 supported a __len__() method which evaluated to False when the iterator
1909 was empty.
1910
Guido van Rossum630db602005-09-20 18:49:54 +00001911- On 64-bit platforms, when __len__() returns a value that cannot be
1912 represented as a C int, raise OverflowError.
1913
Skip Montanarof8948ca2005-09-19 03:54:46 +00001914- test__locale is skipped on OS X < 10.4 (only partial locale support is
Walter Dörwald6611a8b2005-10-09 19:28:35 +00001915 present).
Skip Montanarof8948ca2005-09-19 03:54:46 +00001916
Georg Brandl80bbf3f2005-09-14 19:38:29 +00001917- SF bug #893549: parsing keyword arguments was broken with a few format
1918 codes.
1919
Guido van Rossum8ee3e5a2005-09-14 18:09:42 +00001920- Changes donated by Elemental Security to make it work on AIX 5.3
1921 with IBM's 64-bit compiler (SF patch #1284289). This also closes SF
1922 bug #105470: test_pwd fails on 64bit system (Opteron).
1923
Guido van Rossum539c6622005-09-14 17:49:54 +00001924- Changes donated by Elemental Security to make it work on HP-UX 11 on
1925 Itanium2 with HP's 64-bit compiler (SF patch #1225212).
1926
Georg Brandl4550b8d2005-08-26 06:43:52 +00001927- Disallow keyword arguments for type constructors that don't use them
Georg Brandl02c42872005-08-26 06:42:30 +00001928 (fixes bug #1119418).
1929
Martin v. Löwisd35edda2005-08-24 08:39:24 +00001930- Forward UnicodeDecodeError into SyntaxError for source encoding errors.
1931
Barry Warsawe2eca0b2005-08-15 18:14:19 +00001932- SF bug #900092: When tracing (e.g. for hotshot), restore 'return' events for
1933 exceptions that cause a function to exit.
1934
Raymond Hettinger9f1a6792005-07-31 01:16:36 +00001935- The implementation of set() and frozenset() was revised to use its
1936 own internal data structure. Memory consumption is reduced by 1/3
1937 and there are modest speed-ups as well. The API is unchanged.
1938
Tim Petersde7990b2005-07-17 23:45:23 +00001939- SF bug #1238681: freed pointer is used in longobject.c:long_pow().
1940
Michael W. Hudson0edc7a02005-07-12 10:21:19 +00001941- SF bug #1229429: PyObject_CallMethod failed to decrement some
1942 reference counts in some error exit cases.
1943
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001944- SF bug #1185883: Python's small-object memory allocator took over
1945 a block managed by the platform C library whenever a realloc specified
1946 a small new size. However, there's no portable way to know then how
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001947 much of the address space following the pointer is valid, so there's no
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001948 portable way to copy data from the C-managed block into Python's
1949 small-object space without risking a memory fault. Python's small-object
1950 realloc now leaves such blocks under the control of the platform C
1951 realloc.
1952
Michael W. Hudsonb8963812005-07-05 15:21:58 +00001953- SF bug #1232517: An overflow error was not detected properly when
1954 attempting to convert a large float to an int in os.utime().
1955
Raymond Hettinger3296e692005-06-29 23:29:56 +00001956- SF bug #1224347: hex longs now print with lowercase letters just
1957 like their int counterparts.
1958
Michael W. Hudson188d4362005-06-20 16:52:57 +00001959- SF bug #1163563: the original fix for bug #1010677 ("thread Module
1960 Breaks PyGILState_Ensure()") broke badly in the case of multiple
1961 interpreter states; back out that fix and do a better job (see
1962 http://mail.python.org/pipermail/python-dev/2005-June/054258.html
1963 for a longer write-up of the problem).
1964
Michael W. Hudsondf888462005-06-03 14:41:55 +00001965- SF patch #1180995: marshal now uses a binary format by default when
1966 serializing floats.
1967
Michael W. Hudsonda85a902005-06-01 11:34:22 +00001968- SF patch #1181301: on platforms that appear to use IEEE 754 floats,
1969 the routines that promise to produce IEEE 754 binary representations
1970 of floats now simply copy bytes around.
1971
Skip Montanarobbf12ba2005-05-20 03:07:06 +00001972- bug #967182: disallow opening files with 'wU' or 'aU' as specified by PEP
1973 278.
1974
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001975- patch #1109424: int, long, float, complex, and unicode now check for the
1976 proper magic slot for type conversions when subclassed. Previously the
1977 magic slot was ignored during conversion. Semantics now match the way
1978 subclasses of str always behaved. int/long/float, conversion of an instance
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00001979 to the base class has been moved to the proper nb_* magic slot and out of
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001980 PyNumber_*().
Neal Norwitzcfba5f82006-04-25 05:05:03 +00001981 Thanks Walter Drwald.
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001982
Barry Warsawc8d907c2005-04-19 23:43:40 +00001983- Descriptors defined in C with a PyGetSetDef structure, where the setter is
1984 NULL, now raise an AttributeError when attempting to set or delete the
1985 attribute. Previously a TypeError was raised, but this was inconsistent
1986 with the equivalent pure-Python implementation.
1987
Michael W. Hudson774479c2005-04-18 08:46:17 +00001988- It is now safe to call PyGILState_Release() before
1989 PyEval_InitThreads() (note that if there is reason to believe there
1990 are multiple threads around you still must call PyEval_InitThreads()
1991 before using the Python API; this fix is for extension modules that
1992 have no way of knowing if Python is multi-threaded yet).
1993
Michael W. Hudsone3afc592005-04-07 10:11:19 +00001994- Typing Ctrl-C whilst raw_input() was waiting in a build with threads
1995 disabled caused a crash.
1996
Michael W. Hudsonb330adf2005-03-31 09:35:44 +00001997- Bug #1165306: instancemethod_new allowed the creation of a method
1998 with im_class == im_self == NULL, which caused a crash when called.
1999
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002000- Move exception finalisation later in the shutdown process - this
Anthony Baxter12b6f6c2005-03-29 13:36:16 +00002001 fixes the crash seen in bug #1165761
2002
Raymond Hettinger96229b12005-03-11 06:49:40 +00002003- Added two new builtins, any() and all().
2004
Brett Cannon409d8f22005-03-05 06:47:57 +00002005- Defining a class with empty parentheses is now allowed
Brett Cannonf4189912005-04-09 02:30:16 +00002006 (e.g., ``class C(): pass`` is no longer a syntax error).
2007 Patch #1176012 added support to the 'parser' module and 'compiler' package
2008 (thanks to logistix for that added support).
Brett Cannon409d8f22005-03-05 06:47:57 +00002009
Martin v. Löwis96d743e2005-03-03 23:00:26 +00002010- Patch #1115086: Support PY_LONGLONG in structmember.
2011
Raymond Hettingerb67cc802005-03-03 16:45:19 +00002012- Bug #1155938: new style classes did not check that __init__() was

2017
Martin v. Löwisff232d72005-03-03 09:24:38 +00002018- Bug #723201: Raise a TypeError for passing bad objects to 'L' format.
2019
Michael W. Hudson8e1afab2005-02-17 14:55:21 +00002020- Bug #1124295: the __name__ attribute of file objects was
2021 inadvertently made inaccessible in restricted mode.
2022
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002023- Bug #1074011: closing sys.std{out,err} now causes a flush() and
Martin v. Löwis8e3ca8a2005-01-23 09:41:49 +00002024 an ferror() call.
2025
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00002026- min() and max() now support key= arguments with the same meaning as in
2027 list.sort().
2028
Raymond Hettingerc34f8672005-01-02 06:17:33 +00002029- The peephole optimizer now performs simple constant folding in expressions:
2030 (2+3) --> (5).
2031
Raymond Hettingera422c342005-01-11 03:03:27 +00002032- set and frozenset objects can now be marshalled. SF #1098985.
2033
Michael W. Hudsonfaa76482005-01-31 17:09:25 +00002034- Bug #1077106: Poor argument checking could cause memory corruption
2035 in calls to os.read().
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002036
Jeremy Hyltonab630502005-02-04 18:44:06 +00002037- The parser did not complain about future statements in illegal

2048 can't help, but can hurt if another thread happens to get created with
2049 the same thread id).

Georg Brandl828fdef2006-04-01 08:59:03 +00002260 a DB-API interface in the standard library. You'll need sqlite 3.0.8 or
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00002261 later to build this - if you have an earlier version, the C extension
Anthony Baxterc51ee692006-04-01 00:57:31 +00002262 module will not be built.

2287
Barry Warsaw4d90bbd2006-03-22 02:45:50 +00002288- email 4.0 package now integrated. This is largely the same as the email 3.0
2289 package that was included in Python 2.3, except that PEP 8 module names are
2290 now used (e.g. mail.message instead of email.Message). The MIME classes
2291 have been moved to a subpackage (e.g. email.mime.text instead of
2292 email.MIMEText). The old names are still supported for now. Several
2293 deprecated Message methods have been removed and lots of bugs have been
2294 fixed. More details can be found in the email package documentation.
2295

2297 (a subclass of tuple) that provides incremental decoders and encoders
2298 (a way to use stateful codecs without the stream API). Python functions

2300 as C functions PyCodec_IncrementalEncoder() and PyCodec_IncrementalDecoder()
2301 have been added.

2568
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002569- Enhancements to the csv module:
2570
2571 + Dialects are now validated by the underlying C code, better
Georg Brandl7eb4b7d2005-07-22 21:49:32 +00002572 reflecting its capabilities, and improving its compliance with
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002573 PEP 305.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002574 + Dialect parameter parsing has been re-implemented to improve error
2575 reporting.
2576 + quotechar=None and quoting=QUOTE_NONE now work the way PEP 305
2577 dictates.
2578 + the parser now removes the escapechar prefix from escaped characters.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002579 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the writer now tests for numeric
Andrew M. Kuchling6db67822006-04-18 14:04:57 +00002580 types, rather than any object that can be represented as a numeric.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002581 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the reader now casts unquoted fields
2582 to floats.
Andrew McNamaraf69d94f2005-01-13 11:30:54 +00002583 + reader now allows \r characters to be quoted (previously it only allowed
2584 \n to be quoted).
Andrew McNamarac89f2842005-01-12 07:44:42 +00002585 + writer doublequote handling improved.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002586 + Dialect classes passed to the module are no longer instantiated by
2587 the module before being parsed (the former validation scheme required
2588 this, but the mechanism was unreliable).
2589 + The dialect registry now contains instances of the internal
2590 C-coded dialect type, rather than references to python objects.
2591 + the internal c-coded dialect type is now immutable.
2592 + register_dialect now accepts the same keyword dialect specifications
2593 as the reader and writer, allowing the user to register dialects
2594 without first creating a dialect class.
2595 + a configurable limit to the size of parsed fields has been added -
2596 previously, an unmatched quote character could result in the entire
2597 file being read into the field buffer before an error was reported.
Andrew McNamara31d88962005-01-12 03:45:10 +00002598 + A new module method csv.field_size_limit() has been added that sets
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002599 the parser field size limit (returning the former limit). The initial
2600 limit is 128kB.
Andrew McNamara7f2053e2005-01-12 11:17:16 +00002601 + A line_num attribute has been added to the reader object, which tracks
2602 the number of lines read from the source iterator. This is not
2603 the same as the number of records returned, as records can span
2604 multiple lines.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002605 + reader and writer objects were not being registered with the cyclic-GC.
2606 This has been fixed.
2607
Brett Cannone6539c42005-01-08 02:43:53 +00002608- _DummyThread objects in the threading module now delete self.__block that is
2609 inherited from _Thread since it uses up a lock allocated by 'thread'. The
2610 lock primitives tend to be limited in number and thus should not be wasted on
2611 a _DummyThread object. Fixes bug #1089632.
2612
Raymond Hettinger97db05d2005-01-07 08:15:41 +00002613- The imghdr module now detects Exif files.
2614
Raymond Hettinger6065d322004-12-20 23:51:53 +00002615- StringIO.truncate() now correctly adjusts the size attribute.
2616 (Bug #951915).
2617
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00002618- locale.py now uses an updated locale alias table (built using
2619 Tools/i18n/makelocalealias.py, a tool to parse the X11 locale
2620 alias file); the encoding lookup was enhanced to use Python's
Andrew M. Kuchling88b85822005-08-23 00:57:07 +00002621 encoding alias table.
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00002622

2635
Raymond Hettingerf3fa9462004-12-05 01:58:09 +00002636- the filecmp module no longer uses the deprecated use_statcache argument.
2637
Raymond Hettinger664347b2004-12-04 21:21:53 +00002638- unittest.TestCase.run() and unittest.TestSuite.run() can now be successfully
2639 extended or overridden by subclasses. Formerly, the subclassed method would
2640 be ignored by the rest of the module. (Bug #1078905).
2641
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002642- heapq.nsmallest() and heapq.nlargest() now support key= arguments with
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00002643 the same meaning as in list.sort().
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002644
Walter Dörwald36733692004-12-22 12:50:50 +00002645- Bug #1076985: ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` now calls ``read()`` only

2647 tokenizer with very long source lines.
2648
Barry Warsaw538561e2006-01-01 21:48:54 +00002649- Bug #1083110: ``zlib.decompress.flush()`` would segfault if called

2658
Greg Ward40407942005-03-05 02:53:17 +00002659- Bug #1149508: ``textwrap`` now handles hyphenated numbers (eg. "2004-03-05")
2660 correctly.
2661
Walter Dörwaldbc8e6422005-04-21 21:32:03 +00002662- Partial fixes for SF bugs #1163244 and #1175396: If a chunk read by
2663 ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` has a trailing "\r", read one more
2664 character even if the user has passed a size parameter to get a proper
2665 line ending. Remove the special handling of a "\r\n" that has been split
2666 between two lines.
2667
Walter Dörwalda47d1c02005-08-30 10:23:14 +00002668- Bug #1251300: On UCS-4 builds the "unicode-internal" codec will now complain
2669 about illegal code points. The codec now supports PEP 293 style error
2670 handlers.
2671
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00002672- Bug #1235646: ``codecs.StreamRecoder.next()`` now reencodes the data it reads
Walter Dörwaldc5238b82005-09-01 11:56:53 +00002673 from the input stream, so that the output is a byte string in the correct
2674 encoding instead of a unicode string.

2686
Walter Dörwald58917a62006-03-31 15:26:22 +00002687- Bug #947906: An object oriented interface has been added to the calendar
2688 module. It's possible to generate HTML calendar now and the module can be
Walter Dörwald48d5e502006-04-01 07:57:00 +00002689 called as a script (e.g. via ``python -mcalendar``). Localized month and
2690 weekday names can be ouput (even if an exotic encoding is used) using
2691 special classes that use unicode.

2731
Brett Cannon516592f2004-12-07 00:42:59 +00002732- setup.py now uses the directories specified in LDFLAGS using the -L option
2733 and in CPPFLAGS using the -I option for adding library and include
2734 directories, respectively, for compiling extension modules against. This has
2735 led to the core being compiled using the values in CPPFLAGS. It also removes
2736 the need for the special-casing of both DarwinPorts and Fink for darwin since
2737 the proper directories can be specified in LDFLAGS (``-L/sw/lib`` for Fink,
2738 ``-L/opt/local/lib`` for DarwinPorts) and CPPFLAGS (``-I/sw/include`` for
2739 Fink, ``-I/opt/local/include`` for DarwinPorts).
2740
Brett Cannon43802422005-02-10 20:48:03 +00002741- Test in configure.in that checks for tzset no longer dependent on tm->tm_zone

2747-----
2748
Tim Petersc9d78aa2006-03-26 23:27:58 +00002749- ``PyMem_{Del, DEL}`` and ``PyMem_{Free, FREE}`` no longer map to
2750 ``PyObject_{Free, FREE}``. They map to the system ``free()`` now. If memory
2751 is obtained via the ``PyObject_`` family, it must be released via the
2752 ``PyObject_`` family, and likewise for the ``PyMem_`` family. This has
2753 always been officially true, but when Python's small-object allocator was
2754 introduced, an attempt was made to cater to a few extension modules
2755 discovered at the time that obtained memory via ``PyObject_New`` but
2756 released it via ``PyMem_DEL``. It's years later, and if such code still
2757 exists it will fail now (probably with segfaults, but calling wrong
2758 low-level memory management functions can yield many symptoms).
2759
