8=============================================
9
10*Release date: XX-XXX-2008*
11
12Core and Builtins
13-----------------
14
Martin v. Löwis9fa5a282008-09-11 06:53:30 +000015- Issue #3642: Suppress warning in obmalloc when size_t is larger than uint.
16
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc05e34492008-09-10 22:04:45 +000017- Issue #3743: In a few places, PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T was incorrectly used with
18 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro
19 PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T is designed to select the correct format for the OS
20 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent
21 implementation and uses "%zd" on all platforms for size_t values.
22 This makes a difference on win64, where ``printf`` needs "%Id" to display
23 64bit values.
24
Benjamin Peterson97179b02008-09-09 20:55:01 +000025- Issue #3634: _weakref.ref(Exception).__init__() gave invalid return value on
26 error.
27
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcd3ffb892008-09-09 07:24:30 +000028- Issue #3777: long() applied to a float object now always return a long
29 object; previously an int would be returned for small values. the __long__
30 method is allowed to return either an int or a long, but the behaviour of
31 float objects should not change to respect backward compatibility.
32
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +000033- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with
34 a unicode argument.
35
Benjamin Peterson17f03ca2008-09-01 14:18:30 +000036- Issue #3683: Fix compilation when --without-threads is given.
37
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +000038- Issue #3668: Fix a memory leak with the "s*" argument parser in
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +000039 PyArg_ParseTuple and friends, which occurred when the argument for "s*"
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +000040 was correctly parsed but parsing of subsequent arguments failed.
41
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +000042- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +000043 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
44 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
45 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
46 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
47 type object.
48
Neal Norwitz18aa3882008-08-24 05:04:52 +000049- Fix crashes on memory allocation failure found with failmalloc.
50
51- Fix memory leaks found with valgrind and update suppressions file.
52
53- Fix compiler warnings in opt mode which would lead to invalid memory reads.
54
55- Fix problem using wrong name in decimal module reported by pychecker.
56
Christian Heimes7d4c3172008-08-22 19:47:25 +000057- Silenced another compiler warning about a used but not defined
58 function 'stringlib_contains_obj'.
59
Benjamin Peterson712ee922008-08-24 18:10:20 +000060- Added warnings on the use of ``__getslice__``, ``__setslice__``, or
61 ``__delslice__``.
62
Gregory P. Smith2bb25cc2008-09-02 05:29:51 +000063- Issue #3678: Correctly pass LDFLAGS and LDLAST to the linker on shared
64 library targets in the Makefile.
65
Gregory P. Smith980b99b2008-09-07 05:15:18 +000066- Issue #1204: The configure script now tests for additional libraries
67 that may be required when linking against readline. This fixes issues
68 with x86_64 builds on some platforms (a few Linux flavors and OpenBSD).
69

Brett Cannon672237d2008-09-09 00:49:16 +000084- Issue 3781: Clean up the API for warnings.catch_warnings() by having it
85 return a list or None rather than a custom object.
86
Benjamin Peterson6ac7d7c2008-09-06 19:28:11 +000087- Issue #1638033: Cookie.Morsel gained the httponly attribute.

163
Barry Warsaw07a4a382008-08-21 01:15:08 +0000164*Release date: 20-Aug-2008*
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000165
166Core and Builtins
167-----------------
168
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000169- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
170 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
171 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
172 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
173 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
174 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
175 default.
176
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000177- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
178 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
179
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000180- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
181 value again.
182
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000183- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
184 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
185 and introducing s*.
186
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000187- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
188 object was stored in the freelist.
189
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000190- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
191 ValueError consistently across platforms.
192
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000193- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
194 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
195 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
196
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000197- Apply security patches from Apple.
198
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000199- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
200 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
201
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000202- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
203 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
204
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000205- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
206 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
207 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
208
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000209- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
210 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
211 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
212 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
213 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
214 failed have been fixed.
215
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000216Library
217-------
218
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +0000219- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
220
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000221- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
222 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
223
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000224- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
225 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
226 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
227
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000228- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
229 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
230 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
231 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
232 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
233 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
234
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000235- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
236 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
237
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +0000238- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
239
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +0000240- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.
241
Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +0000242- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.
243
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +0000244- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
245 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
246
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +0000247- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
248 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
249
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +0000250- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
251 in a redirect.
252
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000253- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in
Brett Cannon721b1452008-08-16 22:00:27 +0000254 BaseHTTPServer, cgi (and rfc822), httplib.
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000255
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +0000256- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash
257 after a 302 response in the case of not going through a proxy.
258
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +0000259- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
260 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
261 regular expression.
262
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +0000263- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now
264 thread-safe.
265
Brett Cannonbf3157b2008-08-14 05:00:03 +0000266- Silence the DeprecationWarning of rfc822 when it is imported by mimetools
267 since mimetools itself is deprecated. Because modules are cached, all
268 subsequent imports of rfc822 will not raise a visible DeprecationWarning.
269
Antoine Pitrou9fcd4b32008-08-11 17:21:36 +0000270- Issue #3134: shutil referenced undefined WindowsError symbol.
271
Robert Schuppenies14646332008-08-10 11:01:53 +0000272- Issue #1342811: Fix leak in Tkinter.Menu.delete. Commands associated to
273 menu entries were not deleted.
274
Brett Cannon83e81842008-08-09 23:30:55 +0000275- Copied the implementation of reduce() to _functools.reduce() to have a
276 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
277
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +0000278- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise
279 a MemoryError rather than silently stop the iteration.
280
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +0000281- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"
282 to _sre.compile() will now be rejected. This should not affect anybody
283 since the re.compile() function never generates invalid re-bytecode.
284
Skip Montanaroa032bf42008-08-08 22:52:51 +0000285- Issue #3436: Make csv.DictReader's fieldnames attribute a property so that
286 upon first access it can be automatically initialized from the csv file if
287 it wasn't initialized during instantiation.
288
Brett Cannon3aa2a492008-08-06 22:28:09 +0000289- Issue #2338: Create imp.reload() to help with transitioning to Python 3.0 as
290 the reload() built-in has been removed.

Brett Cannonc1b76e42008-08-09 23:06:16 +0000293 while running under the ``-3`` flag: aifc, asynchat, asyncore, bdb, bsddb,
Brett Cannon047e4a92008-08-17 04:16:04 +0000294 ConfigParser, cookielib, csv, difflib, distutils, DocXMLRPCServer, email,
295 filecmp, fileinput, inspect, logging, modulefinder, pdb, pickle, profile,
296 pstats, pydoc, re, rlcompleter, SimpleXMLRPCServer, shelve, socket,
297 subprocess, sqlite3, tarfile, Tkinter, test.test_support, textwrap,
298 threading, tokenize, traceback, urlparse, wsgiref, xml, xmlrpclib.
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +0000299
Lars Gustäbel727bd0b2008-08-02 11:26:39 +0000300- Issue #3039: Fix tarfile.TarFileCompat.writestr() which always
301 raised an AttributeError.
302
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +0000303- Issue #2523: Fix quadratic behaviour when read()ing a binary file without

361-----------------
362
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000363- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
364 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
365 an integer using operator.index().
366
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000367- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
368 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
369
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000370- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
371 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
372
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000373- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
374 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
375 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
376
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000377- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
378 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
379 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
380 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
381 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
382 level.
383
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000384- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
385 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
386 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
387 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
388 all imports from that module to fail.
389
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000390- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
391 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
392 new-style classes.
393

400 another thread's dictionary.
401
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000402- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
403 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
404 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
405 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
406 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
407 10, -1).
408
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000409- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
410 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
411 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000449- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
450 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000451 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000452 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000923- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
924 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
925 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
926 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
927 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
928 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
929 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support
930 for the ``line`` argument will raise a DeprecationWarning.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000993- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
994 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
995 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
996 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
997 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
998 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
999 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1000 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1001 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1002 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1003 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1004 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1005 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1006 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1007 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1008 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1009 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1010 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1011 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1012 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1013
1014 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1015 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1016 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1017 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1018 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1019 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1020 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1021 access to the underlying socket used.
1022
1023 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1024 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1025 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001026
1027 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001028 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,

1030 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
1031
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001032 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
1033 suite to run in parallel without issue.

1311
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001312- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1313 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1314 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1315 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1316 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1317 module is:
1318 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1319
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001320- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1321 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1322 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1323 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1324 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1325 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1326
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001327- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1328 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1329 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1330 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1331 PyObject_Format().
1332
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001333- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1334 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1335 state.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +00001336
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001337- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also

1345 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
1346 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001347
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001348- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a

1361
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001362- Issue #1983: Fixed return type of fork(), fork1() and forkpty()
1363 calls. Python expected the return type int but the fork familie
1364 returns pi_t.
Christian Heimes951cc0f2008-01-31 23:08:23 +00001365
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001366- Issue #1678380: Fix a bug that identifies 0j and -0j when they

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001378- Patch #1473257: generator objects gain a gi_code attribute. This is
1379 the same object as the func_code attribute of the function that
1380 produced the generator.
Georg Brandl0cdf9a32008-01-26 14:14:20 +00001381
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001382- Issue #1920: "while 0" statements were completely removed by the
1383 compiler, even in the presence of an "else" clause, which is
1384 supposed to be run when the condition is false. Now the compiler
1385 correctly emits bytecode for the "else" suite.
