10*Release date: XX-Aug-2008*
11
12Core and Builtins
13-----------------
14
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +000015- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
16 object was stored in the freelist.
17
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +000018- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
19 ValueError consistently across platforms.
20
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +000021- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
22 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
23 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
24
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +000025- Apply security patches from Apple.
26
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +000027- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
28 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
29
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +000030- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
31 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
32
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +000033- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
34 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
35 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
36
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +000037- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
38 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
39 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
40 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
41 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
42 failed have been fixed.
43
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +000044Library
45-------
46
Antoine Pitrou9fcd4b32008-08-11 17:21:36 +000047- Issue #3134: shutil referenced undefined WindowsError symbol.
48
Robert Schuppenies14646332008-08-10 11:01:53 +000049- Issue #1342811: Fix leak in Tkinter.Menu.delete. Commands associated to
50 menu entries were not deleted.
51
Brett Cannon83e81842008-08-09 23:30:55 +000052- Copied the implementation of reduce() to _functools.reduce() to have a
53 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
54
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +000055- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise
56 a MemoryError rather than silently stop the iteration.
57
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +000058- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"
59 to _sre.compile() will now be rejected. This should not affect anybody
60 since the re.compile() function never generates invalid re-bytecode.
61
Skip Montanaroa032bf42008-08-08 22:52:51 +000062- Issue #3436: Make csv.DictReader's fieldnames attribute a property so that
63 upon first access it can be automatically initialized from the csv file if
64 it wasn't initialized during instantiation.
65
Brett Cannon3aa2a492008-08-06 22:28:09 +000066- Issue #2338: Create imp.reload() to help with transitioning to Python 3.0 as
67 the reload() built-in has been removed.
68
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +000069- Changed code in the following modules/packages to remove warnings raised
Brett Cannonc1b76e42008-08-09 23:06:16 +000070 while running under the ``-3`` flag: aifc, asynchat, asyncore, bdb, bsddb,
Brett Cannon9fc56312008-08-09 23:39:11 +000071 ConfigParser, cookielib, csv, difflib, DocXMLRPCServer, email, filecmp,
72 fileinput, inspect, logging, modulefinder, pdb, pickle, profile, pstats,
73 pydoc, re, rlcompleter, SimpleXMLRPCServer, shelve, socket, subprocess,
74 sqlite3, tarfile, Tkinter, test.test_support, textwrap, threading, tokenize,
Brett Cannon46265862008-08-09 23:34:11 +000075 traceback, urlparse, wsgiref, xml, xmlrpclib.
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +000076
Lars Gustäbel727bd0b2008-08-02 11:26:39 +000077- Issue #3039: Fix tarfile.TarFileCompat.writestr() which always
78 raised an AttributeError.
79
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +000080- Issue #2523: Fix quadratic behaviour when read()ing a binary file without
Antoine Pitroude781a42008-08-09 12:43:23 +000081 asking for a specific length. This problem only affected files opened
82 using the new "io" module, not the built-in open() function.
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +000083
Mark Dickinsonfe84cce2008-07-27 06:39:07 +000084- Issue #3449: Update decimal module to use most recent specification
85 (v. 1.68) and tests (v. 2.58) from IBM.
86
Skip Montanarof9ac43f2008-07-27 00:50:41 +000087- Issue 3437: Bug fix in robotparser parsing of Allow: lines.
88
Raymond Hettinger8c664e82008-07-25 18:43:33 +000089- Issue 1592: Improve error reporting when operations are attempted
90 on a closed shelf.
91
Georg Brandlf9efabb2008-07-23 15:16:45 +000092- Deprecate the "ast" parser function aliases.
93
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +000094- Issue #3120: On 64-bit Windows the subprocess module was truncating handles.
95
96- Issue #3303: Fix a crash in locale.strcoll() when calling it with
97 invalid arguments.
98
99- Issue #3302: Fix several crashes when calling locale's gettext functions
100 with None arguments.
101
102- Issue #3389: Allow resolving dotted names for handlers in logging
103 configuration files.
104
105- Deprecate the sunaudio module for removal in Python 3.0.
106
Antoine Pitrou5fdfa3e2008-07-25 19:42:26 +0000107- Issue #3394: zipfile.writestr sets external attributes when passed a
108 file name rather than a ZipInfo instance, so files are extracted with
109 mode 0600 rather than 000 under Unix.
110
Gregory P. Smitha36f8fe2008-08-04 00:13:29 +0000111- Issue #1857: subprocess.Popen.poll gained an additional _deadstate keyword
112 argument in python 2.5, this broke code that subclassed Popen to include its
113 own poll method. Fixed my moving _deadstate to an _internal_poll method.
114
Martin v. Löwis8dbf3642008-08-01 14:10:26 +0000115Build
116-----
117
118- Generate the PatternGrammar pickle during "make install".
119
Nick Coghlan2a0c2b12008-08-04 12:47:17 +0000120Documentation
121-------------
122
123- Issue #643841: The language reference now provides more detailed
124 coverage of the lookup process for special methods. The disclaimers
125 regarding lack of coverage of new-style classes have also been
126 removed, since the coverage is now fairly reasonable.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000132*Release date: 17-Jul-2008*
133
Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +0000134Core and Builtins
135-----------------
136
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000137- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
138 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
139 an integer using operator.index().
140
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000141- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
142 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
143
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000144- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
145 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
146
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000147- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
148 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
149 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
150
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000151- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
152 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
153 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
154 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
155 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
156 level.
157
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000158- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
159 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
160 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
161 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
162 all imports from that module to fail.
163
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000164- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
165 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
166 new-style classes.
167
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000168- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
169 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
170 another file in sys.stdout.
171
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000172- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
173 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
174 another thread's dictionary.
175
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000176- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
177 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
178 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
179 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
180 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
181 10, -1).
182
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000183- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
184 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
185 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000186
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000187- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
188 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into
189 ClearFreeList apis and calls them via gc.collect().
Gregory P. Smith2fe77062008-07-06 03:35:58 +0000190
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000191Library
192-------

195
Jesse Noller7fb96402008-07-17 21:01:05 +0000196- Issue #3395: fix reference in test_multiprocessing to old debugInfo method

201
Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +0000202- Issue #3125: Remove copy_reg in multiprocessing and replace it with
203 ForkingPickler.register() to resolve conflict with ctypes.
204
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000205- Issue #3090: Fixed ARCHFLAGS parsing on OS/X
Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +0000206
Thomas Heller880f5292008-07-15 19:39:38 +0000207- Issue #3313: Fixed a crash when a failed dlopen() call does not set
208 a valid dlerror() message.
209
Thomas Heller2bad6572008-07-15 17:19:50 +0000210- Issue #3258: Fixed a crash when a ctypes POINTER type to an

Raymond Hettinger3cd1e422008-07-10 14:03:19 +0000218
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000219- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
220 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000221 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000222 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
223 merged into trunk.
224
Georg Brandle78fbcc2008-07-05 10:13:36 +0000225- Issue #2663: add filtering capability to shutil.copytree().

230
231- Issue #1746: Correct handling of zipfile archive comments (previously
232 archives with comments over 4k were flagged as invalid). Allow writing
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000233 Zip files with archives by setting the 'comment' attribute of a ZipFile.

239 handling is now the same as that of other special attributes like __name__).
240
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000241- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for
242 removal in Python 3.0 in favor of urllib2.urlopen().

Brett Cannon80bb9d92008-05-08 18:15:14 +0000291
292Core and Builtins
293-----------------
294
Brett Cannondea1b562008-06-27 00:31:13 +0000295- Issue #3211: warnings.warn_explicit() did not guard against its 'registry'
296 argument being anything other than a dict or None. Also fixed a bug in error
297 handling when 'message' and 'category' were both set to None, triggering a
298 bus error.
299
Amaury Forgeot d'Arca8919fe2008-06-16 19:12:42 +0000300- Issue #3100: Corrected a crash on deallocation of a subclassed weakref which

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000690- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
691 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
692 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
693 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
694 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
695 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
696 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support

758-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000759
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000760- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
761 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
762 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
763 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
764 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
765 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
766 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
767 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
768 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
769 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
770 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
771 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
772 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
773 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
774 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
775 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
776 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
777 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
778 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
779 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
780
781 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
782 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
783 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
784 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
785 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
786 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
787 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
788 access to the underlying socket used.
789
790 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
791 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
792 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000793
794 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000795 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000796 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
797 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
798
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000799 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
800 suite to run in parallel without issue.

Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001079- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1080 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be

Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001087- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1088 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1089 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1090 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1091 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1092 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1093
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001094- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new

1113 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001114

Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +00001333- Bug #1683368: The object.__init__() and object.__new__() methods are
1334 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when
1335 either allows excess arguments is when it is not overridden and the
1336 other one is. For backwards compatibility, when both are
1337 overridden, it is a deprecation warning (for now; maybe a Py3k
Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +00001338 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
1339 as supported by type.__new__().
Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +00001340
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001341- Patch #1675423: PyComplex_AsCComplex() now tries to convert an
