10*Release date: XX-XXX-2008*
11
12Core and Builtins
13-----------------
14
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +000015- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with
16 a unicode argument.
17
Benjamin Peterson17f03ca2008-09-01 14:18:30 +000018- Issue #3683: Fix compilation when --without-threads is given.
19
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +000020- Issue #3668: Fix a memory leak with the "s*" argument parser in
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +000021 PyArg_ParseTuple and friends, which occurred when the argument for "s*"
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +000022 was correctly parsed but parsing of subsequent arguments failed.
23
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +000024- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +000025 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
26 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
27 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
28 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
29 type object.
30
Neal Norwitz18aa3882008-08-24 05:04:52 +000031- Fix crashes on memory allocation failure found with failmalloc.
32
33- Fix memory leaks found with valgrind and update suppressions file.
34
35- Fix compiler warnings in opt mode which would lead to invalid memory reads.
36
37- Fix problem using wrong name in decimal module reported by pychecker.
38
Christian Heimesfb1813c2008-08-22 19:34:15 +000039- Issue #3642: Changed type of numarenas from uint to size_t
40 in order to silence a compilier warning on 64bit OSes.
41
Christian Heimes7d4c3172008-08-22 19:47:25 +000042- Silenced another compiler warning about a used but not defined
43 function 'stringlib_contains_obj'.
44
Benjamin Peterson712ee922008-08-24 18:10:20 +000045- Added warnings on the use of ``__getslice__``, ``__setslice__``, or
46 ``__delslice__``.
47
Gregory P. Smith2bb25cc2008-09-02 05:29:51 +000048- Issue #3678: Correctly pass LDFLAGS and LDLAST to the linker on shared
49 library targets in the Makefile.
50
Benjamin Peterson14cb6bc2008-08-26 17:08:40 +000051C-API
52-----
53
54- Aliased PyObject_Bytes to PyObject_Str.
55
Barry Warsaw6a0b5592008-08-21 02:12:56 +000056Library
57-------
58
Facundo Batistac585df92008-09-03 22:35:50 +000059- Issue 600362: Relocated parse_qs() and parse_qsl(), from the cgi module
60 to the urlparse one. Added a PendingDeprecationWarning in the old
61 module, it will be deprecated in the future.
62
Marc-André Lemburgb339b2a2008-09-03 11:13:56 +000063- Issue #2562: Fix distutils PKG-INFO writing logic to allow having
64 non-ascii characters and Unicode in setup.py meta-data.

Vinay Sajip6a2fd812008-09-03 09:20:05 +000067
Marc-André Lemburg31a0a142008-09-02 12:11:19 +000068- Issue #3719: platform.architecture() fails if there are spaces in the
69 path to the Python binary.
70
Brett Cannon1eaf0742008-09-02 01:25:16 +000071- Issue 3602: Moved test.test_support.catch_warning() to
72 warnings.catch_warnings() along with some API cleanup. Expanding the tests
73 for catch_warnings() also led to an improvement in the raising of a
74 DeprecationWarning related to warnings.warn_explicit().
75
Benjamin Peterson973e6c22008-09-01 23:12:58 +000076- The deprecation warnings for the old camelCase threading API were removed.

Gregory P. Smithd7122032008-09-02 05:36:11 +000087- Issue #3708: os.urandom no longer goes into an infinite loop when passed a
88 non-integer floating point number.
89
Jesse Nollerb814d6a2008-09-03 18:10:30 +000090- Issue #3110: multiprocessing fails to compiel on solaris 10 due to missing
91 SEM_VALUE_MAX.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000109What's New in Python 2.6 beta 3?
110================================
111
Barry Warsaw07a4a382008-08-21 01:15:08 +0000112*Release date: 20-Aug-2008*
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000113
114Core and Builtins
115-----------------
116
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000117- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
118 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
119 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
120 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
121 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
122 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
123 default.
124
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000125- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
126 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
127
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000128- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
129 value again.
130
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000131- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
132 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
133 and introducing s*.
134
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000135- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
136 object was stored in the freelist.
137
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000138- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
139 ValueError consistently across platforms.
140
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000141- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
142 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
143 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
144
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000145- Apply security patches from Apple.
146
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000147- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
148 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
149
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000150- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
151 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
152
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000153- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
154 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
155 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
156
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000157- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
158 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
159 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
160 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
161 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
162 failed have been fixed.
163
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000164Library
165-------
166
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +0000167- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
168
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000169- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
170 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
171
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000172- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
173 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
174 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
175
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000176- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
177 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
178 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
179 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
180 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
181 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
182
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000183- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
184 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
185
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +0000186- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
187
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +0000188- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.
189
Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +0000190- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.
191
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +0000192- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
193 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
194
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +0000195- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
196 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
197
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +0000198- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
199 in a redirect.
200
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000201- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in
Brett Cannon721b1452008-08-16 22:00:27 +0000202 BaseHTTPServer, cgi (and rfc822), httplib.
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000203
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +0000204- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash
205 after a 302 response in the case of not going through a proxy.
206
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +0000207- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
208 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
209 regular expression.
210
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +0000211- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now
212 thread-safe.
213
Brett Cannonbf3157b2008-08-14 05:00:03 +0000214- Silence the DeprecationWarning of rfc822 when it is imported by mimetools
215 since mimetools itself is deprecated. Because modules are cached, all
216 subsequent imports of rfc822 will not raise a visible DeprecationWarning.
217
Antoine Pitrou9fcd4b32008-08-11 17:21:36 +0000218- Issue #3134: shutil referenced undefined WindowsError symbol.
219
Robert Schuppenies14646332008-08-10 11:01:53 +0000220- Issue #1342811: Fix leak in Tkinter.Menu.delete. Commands associated to
221 menu entries were not deleted.
222
Brett Cannon83e81842008-08-09 23:30:55 +0000223- Copied the implementation of reduce() to _functools.reduce() to have a
224 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
225
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +0000226- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise
227 a MemoryError rather than silently stop the iteration.
228
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +0000229- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"
230 to _sre.compile() will now be rejected. This should not affect anybody
231 since the re.compile() function never generates invalid re-bytecode.
232
Skip Montanaroa032bf42008-08-08 22:52:51 +0000233- Issue #3436: Make csv.DictReader's fieldnames attribute a property so that
234 upon first access it can be automatically initialized from the csv file if
235 it wasn't initialized during instantiation.
236
Brett Cannon3aa2a492008-08-06 22:28:09 +0000237- Issue #2338: Create imp.reload() to help with transitioning to Python 3.0 as
238 the reload() built-in has been removed.
239
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +0000240- Changed code in the following modules/packages to remove warnings raised
Brett Cannonc1b76e42008-08-09 23:06:16 +0000241 while running under the ``-3`` flag: aifc, asynchat, asyncore, bdb, bsddb,
Brett Cannon047e4a92008-08-17 04:16:04 +0000242 ConfigParser, cookielib, csv, difflib, distutils, DocXMLRPCServer, email,

246 threading, tokenize, traceback, urlparse, wsgiref, xml, xmlrpclib.
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +0000247
Lars Gustäbel727bd0b2008-08-02 11:26:39 +0000248- Issue #3039: Fix tarfile.TarFileCompat.writestr() which always
249 raised an AttributeError.
250

Antoine Pitroude781a42008-08-09 12:43:23 +0000252 asking for a specific length. This problem only affected files opened
253 using the new "io" module, not the built-in open() function.
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +0000254

277
Antoine Pitrou5fdfa3e2008-07-25 19:42:26 +0000278- Issue #3394: zipfile.writestr sets external attributes when passed a

310
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000311- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
312 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
313 an integer using operator.index().
314
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000315- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
316 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.

320
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000321- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
322 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
323 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
324
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000325- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
326 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
327 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
328 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
329 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
330 level.
331
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000332- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
333 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
334 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
335 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
336 all imports from that module to fail.
337
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000338- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly

348 another thread's dictionary.
349
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000350- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
351 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
352 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
353 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
354 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
355 10, -1).
356

398 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000399 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000400 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000871- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
872 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
873 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000941- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
942 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
943 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
944 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
945 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
946 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
947 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
948 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
949 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
950 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
951 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
952 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
953 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
954 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
955 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
956 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
957 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
958 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
959 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
960 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
961
962 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
963 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
964 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
965 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
966 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
967 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
968 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
969 access to the underlying socket used.
970
971 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
972 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
973 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000974
975 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000976 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,

978 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
979
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000980 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
981 suite to run in parallel without issue.

Christian Heimes5224d282008-02-23 15:01:05 +00001256
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001257- Issue #1881: An internal parser limit has been increased. Also see
Facundo Batistafc2d0102008-02-23 12:01:13 +00001258 issue 215555 for a discussion.
1259
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001260- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1261 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1262 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1263 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1264 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1265 module is:
1266 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1267
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001268- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1269 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1270 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1271 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1272 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1273 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1274
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001275- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1276 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1277 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1278 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1279 PyObject_Format().
1280
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001281- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1282 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1283 state.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +00001284
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001285- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001292- Clear all free lists during a gc.collect() of the highest generation
1293 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
1294 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001295
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001296- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a
1297 subclass of collections.defaultdict, if its default_factory is set
1298 to a bound method.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcb01aa432008-02-08 00:56:02 +00001299
Christian Heimesf75dbef2008-02-08 00:11:31 +00001300- Fixed a minor memory leak in dictobject.c. The content of the free
1301 list was not freed on interpreter shutdown.
1302
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001303- Limit free list of method and builtin function objects to 256

1311 calls. Python expected the return type int but the fork familie
1312 returns pi_t.
Christian Heimes951cc0f2008-01-31 23:08:23 +00001313
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001314- Issue #1678380: Fix a bug that identifies 0j and -0j when they

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001326- Patch #1473257: generator objects gain a gi_code attribute. This is
1327 the same object as the func_code attribute of the function that
1328 produced the generator.
Georg Brandl0cdf9a32008-01-26 14:14:20 +00001329
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001330- Issue #1920: "while 0" statements were completely removed by the
1331 compiler, even in the presence of an "else" clause, which is
1332 supposed to be run when the condition is false. Now the compiler
1333 correctly emits bytecode for the "else" suite.
